Open Sundays After Worship

Calmly Plotting: Lent Devotionals 2014 from the Stillspeaking Writers' Group takes its title from E. B. White's description of his wife, Katherine, planting her spring bulb garden in the fall of the last year of her life. "Oblivious to the ending of her own days, which she knew perfectly well was near at hand, [she was] sitting there... under those dark skies in October, calmly plotting the resurrection."

These devotionals offer a fresh perspective on the season for every day of Lent. Each is accompanied by a scripture verse and prayer.

The Social Gospel

The views expressed in the recommended websites do not necessarily reflect the views of First Community Church.

I am currently in Mexico with members of my First Community family and members of my Amor family. I thought I’d share a post from the Amor Blog on their website. Please keep all of us in your prayers this week!

Blessings,

The rain is coming down hard and has been for days. The wind is blowing furiously. Tree branches are falling down, cars are hydroplaning, and the power is going on and off. The tarp you use as a roof is making a loud slapping sound as it bounces up and down, your kids are shivering as the wind whips through the wood slats that make up your walls, the rain is dripping through the little holes that have worn in the tarp over your head, and your dirt floor is turning to mud.

This is the reality for the Estrada family, but not for long…

When we arrived early Saturday morning at the work site, the family was not there and the gate was locked. I, of course, was immediately irritated and frustrated. I felt bad that the group had to wait to get started working while phone calls were made and the situation was figured out. The group was very understanding and didn’t seem to mind much. They were a fun group who entertained themselves while they waited.

Then the mother of the house came hurriedly walking up with the key to the house. She was so apologetic that she was late. She then went on to explain why she was not home. You see, the rain and wind were so fierce for two nights before we came that she needed to take her children to her mother-in-law’s house to sleep. The description at the start of this post was not some made-up imagery to get you thinking – it was the Estrada family’s reality.

Can you imagine having to leave your house when bad weather comes because your children can’t keep warm and dry?

The very place that is supposed to provide protection from the storm, you have to abandon when it comes. Can you imagine having to seek shelter somewhere else because – despite your best efforts and ingenuity – you just can’t afford to put a solid, weather-resistant house together for your family?

That put it all in perspective. Despite the rain, this group came to build on Saturday in order to change the story the Estrada family will tell when future storms come. Now, when a storm arrives the family can stay in their home and feel safe, dry and warm together. When you come build with Amor, you change a family’s story when a storm comes.

Green Eggs and… Easter?

One of my most interesting Confirmation (Block of Wood) classes was when a student asked me where were the Easter rabbits and Easter eggs

and all that stuff in the Easter story. So

if you’ve ever wondered about that,

here we go.

It all has to do with Christianity both

trying to survive in and to use the

pagan religious traditions in which

it began and then was trying to

evangelize. First of all, the name Easter

is from the name “Eostre,” the Anglo-

Saxon goddess of spring. Easter is

celebrated in the spring because Jesus’

resurrection came at the time of the

Jewish Passover celebration, always

a spring event. (Actually, if we take

seriously the shepherds on the hills

with their sheep and lambs, Christmas

should also be a spring celebration, but

that’s another story.)

It all began somewhere during the

second century, when Christian

missionaries looked for a way to

celebrate Jesus’ resurrection within

the customs of the people where they

were working. Springtime festivals,

already established celebrations in

many cultures, were a natural both

because of the coincidence of timing

and the new life theme of Easter. Out of

the dead of winter comes the rebirth of

the earth.
