And the angel said unto them,

Fear not: for, behold, I bring you tidings

of great joy, which shall be to all people.

3rd Sunday of Advent ~ December 17, 2017

~ Luke 2:10

Page 2: 3rd Sunday of Advent December 17, 2017

On this Third Sunday

of Advent, the Church celebrates Gaudete

Sunday (Rejoice!). This is the first word

of the antiphon at the introit. It sets a

tone for the joyful expectation of the Lord’s birth and second coming as does

the permitted use of rose colored vest-ments (which I will have worn—I’ll try

to share a personal story about that in the

homily if I think of it). In the Gospel, we heard about John the Baptist and how he

testified to the light that would shine

through the darkness of the world. The light, of course, was Jesus. John was the

voice “…crying out in the desert, ‘Make straight the way of the Lord’” as Isaiah

had once said. John humbly recognized

that it was his mission only to prepare the way of the Lord. The rest was up to

the Lord Jesus Christ who prepared and continues to prepare us for the Kingdom.

Let us prepare for the Lord’s coming as

we await in quiet solitude for the coming of the Lord.

It is my sad duty to announce to you the death of Fr. Peter Minelli. Fr. Minelli

died in the Lord on Thursday, November 30, 2017 in Ishpeming. Fr. Minelli was

pastor here at St. Francis de Sales Parish

during the years 1998-2002. In my con-versations with people, I had heard many

positive comments about Fr. Minelli and

his time here. He had retired after com-pleting his tenure as pastor. Let us pray

for the family. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light

shine upon him…Amen.

The “Penance Service” saga continues,

unfortunately. But I think that we have it

solved now—for sure. Let me tell you what happened: last week, I placed a date

in the bulletin announcement for the pen-ance service to be held on December 20

at 7:00 PM. Then, the school wanted to

have a penance service for the children on December 19. Lo and behold, I could

not for the life of me find another priest

to assist me with either penance service on the previously mentioned dates. It

would have been me only—and that would defeat the purpose of a penance

service which is to offer the opportunity

for persons to go to confession to some-one other than their pastor. So, I finally

contacted one other priest who could only be here on December 19, 2017.

What to do? Well, our parish penance

service is on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 7:00 PM with Fr. Tim Ferguson

assisting me from Marygrove. As well, I

did happen to find another priest for the school penance service. Thus, the pen-

ance service for the school is on Tues-

day, December 19, 2017 at 1:00 PM

with Fr. Marius Sierhart (Garden Area

Parishes) as my assistant. Both of the penance services will be held at St. Fran-

cis de Sales and I highly encourage all of

our parishioners to attend as this will be one of the last opportunities for reconcil-

iation until after Christmas. It goes with-out saying that you may attend either

penance service (however, children are

the priority at the afternoon penance ser-vice). Tuesday, December 19, 2017 is a

day of penance—not only for the congre-

gation, but for me as well to get this off the ground. As things go, this is set in

stone and I do not anticipate any chang-es—whew!

Our roof fund continues to grow. I am going to make another contribution to-

wards it myself soon. I would really like

to see us complete this project next year

if at all possible. We can do it! Like I

announced previously, I don’t know if anyone were going to give me a present

for Christmas (in the past, people have

done this), but I would appreciate any gifts of any type be forwarded to our

parish (or the mission in Gulliver—they need a roof too) in the form of a donation

to the roof fund. I have been abundantly

blessed here at our parish and mission and there is nothing that I need at this

time. Your faithfulness to Jesus Christ and His Church is about as much a gift

as any priest could ask for!!!

That’s it for now. Our story continues.

Pray for me as I pray for you! Remem-

ber: Smile! God loves you and so do I! Choose life! ~ Fr. Ben

Sharing the Gospel

People noticed John the Baptist. He loved God, and he used words honestly. He really wanted to help people change and grow closer to God. He stood out as someone really different and special. People came from all around to hear him and learn about him. When people asked him questions, he point-ed them to Jesus.

Mission for the Week

Ask a friend if he or she is ready to meet Jesus.

First grade is very busy as we learn about Advent and are getting ready for Jesus to come! We are also be-coming quite the readers. Our knowledge of words is getting better every day. We are also learning to add and subtract up to 20.

For the month of December, we are also learning about how different countries around the world celebrate holidays during this time of year. We are making books to share with our families about them. Come listen to us sing on Dec. 18th at 6pm

for our Christmas program!
