THE THIRD WEEK OF ADVENT

"Joy" “W hen as a child I stood before the lighted crib scene . . . I saw the

Christ Child in His eternal light. I felt the same as the shepherds felt when they came to the crib to worship the little Child. It was there that I first realized what the joy of worship means. God’s greatness came in the smallness of the Child in the crib.” ~ Emmy Arnold, “Christmas Joy”

Are You “SURE” You’re a Registered Parishioner? Many times we meet people at church who attend mass, take part in events, or perhaps even have received their sacraments here. We’re so very glad you’re with us and part of our community. But that alone does not make you a parishioner. To be a member of the parish you have to REGISTER. Registering is very easy. You can register online at spasaparish.org or at the parish office. It only takes a few minutes. Everyone over the age of 18 is encouraged to register. Even if you’re an adult who received all your sacraments here as a child and still attend mass here, you need to register. Why register? First and foremost, it’s very important to register so we can serve your needs when, for example, you need a sponsor certification letter for Baptism or Confirmation. Also, to receive an acknowledgment of your donations for your income tax filing, you need to be registered so we have an official record of your giving over the year. So, please join us officially and register with the parish so we can meet all your needs now and in the future!

To have a Mass offered for a birthday, anniversary, or special need is appropriate, beneficial, and appreciated. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

SACREDNESS Surrounding and Within Us Part 3

Silence or Socializing? There are places or ins tu ons where at the entrance you can see a sign posted with instruc ons about how to behave inside, for instance: Turn off cell phone, No solici ng, Keep discreet distance, Quiet please. You’ll find such signs at hospitals, banks, various wai ng rooms, and fitness or wellness centers. But what about places of worship? It looks like there is some confusion regarding silence — especially shortly before a liturgical service or right a er. Once when I expressed some concern about all the gree ngs and cha ng going on as a congrega on waited for a service to begin, another priest said to me, “Let them talk. Be happy they’re here, and be happy they’re speaking together,” Hmm, . . well, I am happy. I’m happy for those enjoying their conversa ons. But equally or more so, I’m happy for those who might be trying to pray, too! I understand that some mes when we run into a person we haven’t seen for a long me, it’s just natural to burst out with our surprise and pleasure. (This especially happens at weddings, funerals, Confirma ons, etc.) However, there are people who make it a prac ce to arrive at church much earlier than the liturgy starts for the purpose of personal prayer. This may be someone whose home or family environment doesn’t allow them to focus on praying there. How sad it must be when they realize that even the church where they’re looking for solitude and peace is not a place where they’re likely to find it . We need to build up a sensibility toward appropriate silence and a sense of respect for both the church as a place of worship and the people who are there.

The Eulogy This is an issue that has been debated a lot recently within the Church. In some dioceses, eulogies are already forbidden. It is a topic now being discussed in the Archdiocese of New York. Maybe the first thing to say is: the eulogy is not and never has been part of the Mass. The word “eulogy” comes from the Greek εὐλογία, eulogia; eu means "well" or "true," and logia means "words" or "text." Therefore, in the context of the church as a place of worship, the eulogy — Good Word — means a spiritual message offering someone as an example of faith, presen ng his or her virtues and encouraging the congrega on to follow. Unfortunately, our experience from many funeral masses shows that the eulogy often becomes just a sharing of memories from socializing, vacations, hanging out, and sports — which many times are more than inappropriate. Once a priest actually had to stand up and stop the speaker from reading the eulogy (if we can even call it a eulogy) because it was at the edge being sacrilegious! And, sadly, here’s another way that the true meaning and purpose of the eulogy is undermined. The person who died was spiritual, faithful, well known, and an ac ve member of the parish family for many years. However, the family member giving the eulogy says nothing about all these beau ful things. The eulogy becomes a speech about everything and anything, none of it spiritually upli ing. It seems as if the person giving the eulogy is totally unaware of the many good things the deceased had done and the frui ul rela onships that he or she had had. Thankfully, our St. Paul & St. Ann congrega on understands what a eulogy is supposed to be and is percep ve enough to appreci-ate the ones that hit the mark and to no ce when they don’t. We receive much feedback (both posi ve and nega ve) regarding eulogies from our faithful parishioners. Just remember, the “visi ng hours” (o en with a wake service ) in the funeral home are meant as the me and place for sharing memories among family and friends! That’s me for the stories and the personal recollec ons.

Conclusion Sacredness — surrounding and within us. In the future we may dedicate more ar cles to this topic in the bulle n. Basically, sacredness is about dignity, ethics, priori es, and respect towards places, occasions, and, above all, people!

Fr. Roman
