Dear Friends in Jesus Christ at Our Saviors!

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the

transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. 2 Cor. 4:7

We are the earthen vessels Paul speaks of in this verse to the people of Jesus in Corinth. Think of the clay pot as the metaphor and the clay is cracked from age. If you look closely you can see into the jar through the crack. Some pieces have been broken and clued back into place. From the outside there is not a whole a lot of beauty to this vessel. But when God adds Jesus, the Light of the World, to the inside, we begin to see light escaping through the cracks. Our focus is no longer the vessel but rather our attention is drawn to the beautiful light. There is beauty now to the cracks as the light uses them to fill the room with light. The power of this word is this: With Jesus Christ in our life, we are beautiful beyond imagination. We know that the power of this treasure is divine. It is the power of love and forgiveness, of hope and joy. Memorize this verse this month, cut it out and tape it to the refrigerator or mirror. For God in Jesus Christ has claimed us as his own and we belong to Jesus, the treasure of heaven and the light of the World. Speaking of broken, my neck has not healed the way the doctor has wanted it to. The fusion has failed and so I will be undergoing surgery on my neck for a second time on April 12th. I will be gone approx. 8 weeks and will return at the end of June if all goes well with the recovery. I am hopeful that this second round does the trick of fusing my neck and getting me back into the pulpit. I am thankful for your prayers and your support. Internship Update: The seminary will be assigning us an intern by the middle of April. We hope to have a name and bio to share with you at the semi-annual meeting on April 15th. I am thankful for the incredible support that you have given to this program. It is important for us to remember that we are a church of the ELCA and that we will now be training people to be pastor’s in this church. Stewardship Update: I am thankful for the increased giving to the mission and ministry of Jesus at Our Saviors. As we give out of the blessings that God has given us, we are able to fund this ministry. Some of you can give a little, and some can give a lot and as a result ministry happens. As our giving from our faith begins to rise, we will be able to give to the ELCA ministries through our Synod. All of the Lenten offering on Wednesdays’ and Maundy Thursday is designated for Camp Vermilion Ministries. Thank you for your generous giving, we are on the right path for Stewardship. Come to worship as we ‘Celebrate what’s right with God’s World!’ He is Risen! Pastor Paul

Prayer Group Prayer is the name we give to the experience of being in communication with God, wherever we are and whatever we are doing. Prayer is an experience because it involves our senses, minds, souls and spirits. Prayer is communication because it involves giving and receiving. It is sharing between two living, personal beings—God and yourself. In prayer you are sharing your life: your needs, feelings, concerns, and desires. God is responding with divine presence, consolation, insight and change. You are invited to join together in prayer at Our Saviors on April 16 at 6:30pm in Christina’s office. ALL ARE WELCOME

In prayer we present our whole life and the lives of others to God, so that God may be known and lives may be touched by grace.

Café is for women who want to build Community, participate in Advocacy, strengthen Faith, and strive

for Enlightenment (CAFÉ!). It incorporates a Lutheran perspective for women of Christian faith or simply for any woman who is interested in how faith

can relate to the issues that women face today.

Support our youth by recycling your old cell phones by bringing them in to the church office. This recycling program is a great fundraiser for our youth. The company does not accept chargers or instruction books. The drop off is back in the church office. Thank you for your help!

One day it snows, next day it rains and then it is 60 degrees out! One would think we are having crazy days at the preschool. It certainly is hard to plan things when one doesn't know how to dress appropriately for the weather! But we are having a great time at school. We have learned all of our colors with Joseph and his colorful coat. And now we are studying the disciples as they are chosen.

We are ready to hear about Easter. What a wonderful Jesus we have to give himself for each of us. This will lead us into Spring, Earth Day and planting season. So much to do and so little time with only 2 month left of the school year. Whew!!!

A word from the Preschool Director...

Thank you to ALL the individuals and businesses that contributed to our Spaghetti Luncheon & Silent Auction! We are truly blessed to have the support of our church family! Because I’m writing this before all the donations came in, we will have list of all our donors on the website and next month’s Messenger.

Our Children’s Library is still in the process of being completed, thanks to a number of volunteers from our church and school. What a wonderful addition this will be to our program!

A few changes have been made to our preschool program for the 2012-2013 school year. The school board decided not to continue the Jump Start Kindergarten in 2012-13 due to budget constraints. Instead, we have made changes to our 3-morning/week class to integrate the Kindergarten readiness curriculum used in the Jump Start class. The following are program descriptions for our two morning classes:

Discovery Kids – Tuesday & Thursday from 9am-11:30am Discovery Kids is a 2-morning per week program that introduces children to a structured learning environment. The class uses a variety of age-appropriate methods to teach basic pre-literacy skills, pre-math skills, art exploration, large motor activities, learning centers, music, Bible lesson, circle time (including story time), social studies, science concepts and a visit to the children’s library once a week to check out books. This class includes chapel on Thursday mornings with Pastor Paul Hadland and his puppet friends.

Pathfinders – Monday-Wednesday-Friday from 9am-12pm

Pathfinders is a 3-morning per week program that provides an increased level of learning in the areas of pre-reading skills and math skills. Using curriculum specifically geared toward 4 and 5 year olds, this class allows for more exposure to skills necessary for transitioning to Kindergarten. Regular physical education, music, art exploration, learning centers, Bible lesson, circle time (including story time), social studies, science, computer lab (once a week) and a visit to the children’s library once a week to check out books are also a part of this program. This class includes chapel on Wednesday mornings with Pastor Paul Hadland and his puppet friends.

Observe World Malaria Day The ELCA has committed to raise $15 million to join hands with 11 African companion churches in the global effort to prevent, treat and contain malaria by 2015. World Malaria Day is Wednesday, April 25th. OSL will observe it in our congregation on Sunday, April 29th with a special offering.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes. About half of the worlds’ population is at risk of malaria, particularly those in lower-income countries. It infects more than 500 million people each year and kills more than one million people, according to World Health Organization. However, Malaria is preventable and curable.

Christina’s Recipe corner…..

EARL Grey Tea Chocolate Cake

6 Equal Exchange Earl Grey tea bags

1 cup water

1 stick butter (1/2 cup)

3 eggs

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

4 oz. of an extra dark chocolate bar (70% or more)

melted and cooled

2 cups all purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup plain yogurt

Powdered sugar for dusting

Directions:

Heat oven to 350F. Coat an 8 cup fluted tube pan with cooking spray. Boil water and pour 1 cup of water over the tea bags. Steep the tea in the water 3-5 minutes. Remove the tea bags and set the brewed tea aside. Using a mixer beat the butter, eggs, and granulated sugar until fluffy. Blend in the melted chocolate. Beat in the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, yogurt and brewed tea. Pour into pan. Bake 40-50 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out with a few crumbs attached. Remove from oven and let stand 5 minutes. Turn out of pan and cool. Dust with powdered sugar, slice and enjoy. Makes 10 servings

focus is on Environmental wellness

We may not think much about Environmental Wellness as part of our overall living well plan, but our environment and how we feel about it can have a huge impact on the way we feel overall.

Environmental Wellness relates to understanding and becoming conscientious of your impact on the environment. Trying to live in harmony with the Earth by understanding the impact of your interaction with nature and your personal environment, and taking action to protect the world around you.

This month try adding a new healthy habit from the list below.

• Ride your bike, walk or take public transportation instead of driving

• Recycle and compost

• Plant and tend a garden

• Use natural cleaning products

• Carry your personal coffee mug or water bottle

• Plant a tree

• Shut off the water while brushing teeth

• Take shorter showers

• Install compact florescent bulbs

• Unplug things that glow

• Recycle your electronics

OSLC Parish Planning Council Meeting Highlights

Treasurer’s Report

Envelope offering was behind for January through February. Revenues and expenses will be compared at the end of the

first quarter and compared to predicted budget figures. The Endowment Fund books were audited for 2011 and showed

an overall decrease in the fund. Losses in mutual fund investments, fund fees and $8,000 paid out for the kitchen project

have reduced the fund to $164,500.

Pastor’s Report

Pastor Paul updated the medical situation on his neck and announced that he will be having more surgery on April 12. He

anticipates returning in late June. Pastoral duties have been arranged in his absence. New member classes will be held the

last two Thursdays in March with new members welcomed on Sunday, April 15, also the date of the semiannual

congregational meeting. Seminary interns have been assigned and will be announced to us in April. Our seminary intern

position will begin on September 1. Housing in the community has been arranged.

• Team Leader Reports

Church Properties - Work is continuing in the boiler room with the installation of two pumps and motor repair. Chemicals

have been added to the boiler system to control corrosion. The Flooring team will be seeking bids from three local

businesses for flooring in the Fellowship Hall entries and hallways around the kitchen.

Worship, Arts and Music – Events are set for Holy Week, including the Passion Play on Maunday Thursday and three

services on Easter Sunday.

Parish Fellowship – A ladies’ spring afternoon tea has been scheduled for Saturday, April 28 for women of the

congregation and guests or friends.

Christian Education – Sunday school attendance has been averaging 50-60 students each Sunday. The children will sing in

church on April 1 and Mother’s Day, May 15th

. Station leaders are needed for the rest of the year.

Church in Society – Habitat for Humanity has received 19 applications for their ‘Brush with Kindness’ program. They will be

meeting in April to select projects and to look at the scope of the work and possible sponsorships. A ‘Habitat House’ has

been donated in Superior and needs volunteers to begin restoration and remodeling work this spring. The recent concert

at Zion Lutheran supporting Habitat for Humanity was successful and greatly appreciated!

Youth/Small Group – Church youth will again be serving breakfast on Easter Sunday from 8:30-11:00 as a fundraising

project.

• Old Business – The sale of the church lot was discussed. New comparable figures have indicated the lot is valued

from $14 - $18,000. A list of questions asked by parishioners at the annual meeting was addressed. Additional background

information will be updated before the topic is considered again at the next PPC meeting.

• New Business – The NHCP board has requested a designated room for a library to hold books and materials for their

classes. A classroom in the preschool corridor will be used for that purpose.

• Upcoming Meetings: The next CAT meeting is on Wednesday, April 4 at 5:00.

The next PPC meeting is on Tuesday, April 10 at 7:00.

The Semiannual Congregational meeting will be held on Sunday, April 15.

Ladies’ Spring Tea The Fellowship Team is sponsoring a luncheon for all the ladies of Our Saviors.

All women are welcome to invite guests: mother, daughter, sister, friend.

When: Saturday April 28 at 1 pm

Where: Our Savior’s Fellowship Hall

For lunch, musical entertainment and fellowship

Menu: sandwich loaf, fruit, dessert, coffee & tea

Cost: $5 per person

If you have a special tea cup, you are encouraged to bring it and share with others the story behind your special cup. You are not required to bring a cup.

Tickets will be on sale in the narthex after each service on the following Sundays April 15 and 22 and also in the church office during the week. All tickets must be purchased in advance. The last day to purchase tickets will be Sunday April 22. No tickets will be sold at the door. We will have a sign up sheet for those ladies who would like a ride to and from the luncheon. Please join us for fellowship as we welcome in the spring.

If you have been thinking you would like to be more involved in church activities, now is a great time to join a Ministry Team or small group. At the April 15th Congregational Meeting we will elect new church officers and also publish the list of members of all the Ministry Teams. There are many opportunities to serve. Each of the Ministry Teams has a different mission. There should be something to peek everyone’s interest. You may contact the team leader or the church office to learn more about the different teams and to have your name added to any of the team rosters. Everyone is welcome and even encouraged to join a Ministry Team or small group.

Via de Cristo Fellowship and Meal

The Via de Cristo community of Our Savior’s is sponsoring a meal after second service on Sunday, May 6th. The meal will be provided at no charge, all you have to do is show up with your appetite. This will be a time of fellowship, music and a speaker or two to explain what Via de Cristo is about and what meaning it has for our lives.
