God wants us here: we are all called to worship and serve God, each other and the world around us; so we can have holy confidence that God will supply. God will use us to channel that supply; we can have firm confidence it will be real. It will take our committed response. Without each other’s energy and will dedicated to this shared mission, we will do little but annoy our neighbors and each other. To grow and serve and really make a difference, we will all need to want it. The news of it, the planning of it, the process of shaping, and then doing, will require open, often, eager and aggressive communication. We’ll have to talk and respectfully debate and think together and try on ideas and remember history and share strategies that worked other places and be creative about applying principles. The more we share the more will happen for Jesus. When the first missionary Paul wrote to the churches he helped start, he constantly reminded his friends as well as his rivals that the mission of Christ does not move forward if the community does not work together; they (we) must function with co-operation. Joyful community breeds growth, and leads to the vital practice of the final conviction: Compassion. We act always in love. We move always in the ways of forgiveness. We constantly seek reconciliation. We (as Apostle Paul instructs) rejoice with those who rejoice and lament with those in pain. Like most of the rest of the words of this list of convictions, the root of “compassion” is “com (or “co ”) that means “together.” Confidence: Co-faith (co-fide, Latin for “faith”); faith, together. Commitment: Co-entrust (co-mittere, French for “entrust or send”); trust together. Communication: share meaning together. Cooperation: work together. Compassion: live our passion together. May these 6 convictions shape our thoughts, prayers, mission and action as we move forward together and discern and act together on “What would God have us do?” I am on that journey with you! FOOD FOR 5 MEALS - $1.00 The first Sunday of the month is designated as Food Shelf Sunday. We realize that it is easy to forget to bring items to church. In order to make this easier we suggest that a monthly monetary collection be taken on Food Shelf Sunday. This money can be used to help the Salvation Army Food Shelf in Cloquet or 2nd Harvest Food Bank in Duluth. Just $1 can provide enough food for 5 meals through this 2nd Harvest program. We would en-courage each family to contribute at least $1 on Food Shelf Sunday. This program is a bargain that every family can be a part of. May we share our blessings with those in need.

We are starting a new ministry! It is called “Blessing Bags for those in need”. We are asking for your donations of the following items: (preferably trial size) lip balm, tissue packs, tooth paste, mouth wash, hand wipes, q-tips, fruit snacks, fingernail clippers, socks,

band aids, wash cloths, deodorant, body wash, hand sanitizer, dental floss, granola bars, decks of cards, or anything else you can think of. You can also sign an encouraging note. This will be an ongoing ministry here at Our Savior’s. We get people coming in or calling asking for our help...being it for food, clothing, gas money, etc. We will store the filled bags here. What a great way for us who may be more fortunate than others, to help those in need. Please bring in your items to the church office .

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Operation Christmas Child is a ministry that provides Christmas gift boxes and the story of Jesus to children all over the world. To make it more convenient for the congregation, the Fellowship team will provide some plastic containers. So if you would like to be part of this ministry pick up an information pamphlet in the narthex starting October 5th. You can either take a container from the church or purchase your own container or fill a cardboard shoe box you may have at home. The plastic containers are a nice bonus as the child can reuse them. Fill the box with appropriate gifts and return the filled box to the church office NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 16TH. Please enclose a check for $7 to cover the expense of shipping each box. Do not wrap the box in Christmas paper. If you want, you can line the clear plastic box with colorful wrapping paper. Then most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your shoe box gift.

New Directory We are going to be creating an updated church family directory. It would be great to have every member represented in the directory. Following each Sunday service in October, there will be an opportunity to sign up for a pho-tography time slot. There will also be an option to sign up for a time slot on-line through our church web site. Photography sessions will be available November 3,4,5,6, 12,13, and 14th from 2 PM to 8:40 PM and on Saturday November 15th from 10 AM TO 4:40 PM. Each member who has a photo taken, will receive a free 8x10 photo and a copy of the directory. If these times do not work for your family, you also have the option of submitting a photo of your own, or participating in photo sessions scheduled at other churches in our area. You may bring props or pets to be part of your photo, if you choose. If you participate in activi-ties at OSLC, but are not a member, you are wel-come to schedule a sitting. You may also schedule a sitting with family members who are not members of OSLC. This is a great opportunity to get a full family portrait. When you schedule your appointment you will receive information on prices for purchase of additional portraits (beyond the free 8x10). If you bring a food donation for the local food shelf to your photo session, you will receive a $5 discount on any purchase. There will also be a 10% discount coupon included in an e-mailed re-minder for your scheduled sitting. A senior dis-count will also be available.

Sunday school is up and running! We are several weeks into Sunday school and the excitement is high. We plan on having the kids sing at both services several times throughout the year.

Also coming in October, the 2nd graders will receive their bibles. On October 26, they will be presented with their own Spark Bible during church. This is always an exciting time for them so if you see a 2nd grader carrying a brand new shiny bible, be sure to congratulate them!

Remember there is no Sunday school on October 19th.

Be on the lookout for a new Adult Forum time beginning during the Sunday school hour. This forum will be a variety of topics presented by volunteers. These topics will range from bible studies, guided discussion, learning through others experiences and journey’s and probably more that we haven’t even thought of yet!

It will be a great time of fellowship and creating a stronger relationship with Christ and your fellow Christians. Watch for a schedule, grab a cup a coffee and head on over.

Adult Forum

We still need…

• Someone to coordinate some fun events with the Sunday school kids. This year we want

to have the younger kids focus on learning the Lord’s Prayer while the older kids learn the books of the bible. We want to have a friendly competition between the grades and would like someone to get creative with this!

Prayer is the name we give to the experience of being in communication with God, wherever we are and whatever we are doing. Prayer is an experience because it involves our senses, minds, souls and spirits. Prayer is communication because it involves giving and receiving. It is sharing between two living, personal beings—God and yourself. In prayer you are sharing your life: your needs, feelings, concerns, and desires. God is responding with divine presence, consolation, insight and change.

You are invited to join together in prayer at Our Saviors the second Monday of the month (October 13th at 6:00pm in the Fireside Room

In prayer we present our whole life and the lives of others to God, so that God may be known and lives may be touched by grace.

Coffee with a Lutheran Flavor

The LWR Coffee Project is a partnership between Lutheran World Relief and Equal Exchange.

The LWR Coffee Project unites you with farmers who labor to fill your cup. Buying Fair Trade gives coffee farmers steady income to sent their children to school, make sure their communities have clean water, and protect their environment. Lutherans and coffee… the two come together when neighbors gather at church for fellowship. Fairly traded coffee shares more of the bounty of the crop with those who grow it. Improved incomes and trustworthy partners enable small farmers to build a better future for their families and communities. The LWR Coffee Project is a way to reach out with what we spend on something as ordinary and wonderful as coffee. It’s Good Coffee for a Good Cause.

Every Sunday we enjoy fair Trade coffee following worship services in the Narthex.

OSL’s Fair Trade Store has many varieties of coffee, tea and chocolates as well as baking cocoa, hot Cocoa, almonds, Olive Oil and Olivewood Carvings. Stop in the office during regular hours or visit us on Sunday’s between worship services.

Notes from the Director…

****** The gifts have been raining down like leaves off the trees this fall! Our little preschool is so blessed! On behalf of the staff and preschoolers at New Horizons, I want to extend a heartfelt “THANK YOU” to the following OSL members that gave us new (to us) items for our classroom: Beth Lyden—Thanks for the beautiful ta-ble, chairs and the toys! They have found a home in our preschool and are used everyday! Peggy Unulock—Thanks for the baby dolls and the wonderful floor rug Candy Land game! The game is perfect for preschoolers! Dave Johnson & Bobbie Burns—Thanks for your surprise visit with the bin of beanie ba-bies! The children were so excited to show their parents which animal they each picked out!

******

We are having a terrific fall down in the pre-school! Wonderful preschoolers and fami-lies~God is great! However, we do still have openings and it is my daily prayer that we fill those openings. Not for our benefit, but for the children whose lives we could touch. If you have a preschool age child that isn’t currently enrolled in a preschool program; I invite you to call me or stop by my

office to learn about our program. Please don’t let financial or transportation issues stop you from considering our preschool. There are options available for both and I would be happy to help you explore those options!

SIMPLY GIVING

For those of you who use Simply Giving for your offering, there are pink cards available in the pews for you to use. How it works: To show your support of using Simply Giving, place the card in the offering plate. It’s that easy. This gives other members a visual and reminder of the Simply Giving program. If you are not enrolled in Simply Giving, and would like to be, there are forms in the office, in the Narthex, and on our Church website. Www.oursaviorscloquet.org

Church News

What about the Church Library? It has been a quite a few years since any one has taken an interest in the Our Savior’s Library. There are many great books and resources, including items for Sunday School and parenting. While many of the titles are timeless classics and others retain their value, some are dated or obsolete. Many of the video resources are on DVD, a technology that is rapidly becoming hard to use. No one has sorted returned books, evaluated donated materials, replaced the books on the shelves, made sure the filing system is accurate…. In short, no one is taking care of the library. Few seem interested in using the books and other items available. This has led the OSLC Staff and Leadership to wonder if we ought to be using that space for other ministry? It could be used for meeting space, expanded Fair Trade store or other things as well. If we are to keep the library, it would need a dedicated volunteer (or two or three) to restore it and take care of it. Perhaps the books could be condensed to a few carts of “take one, leave one” borrowing. The Parish Planning Council and Staff are requesting your input. Is there anyone out there who would be interested in taking care of the library? Are there any ideas about how best to use the valuable resources that are currently there? What ideas do you have?

Please share your ideas soon; we’d like to move

forward with adapting that ministry space as soon as

possible.

Call, email or stop in for conversation with your ideas.

Thank you.

Church News ▪ Old Business Pictorial Directory – Plans for the new church family directory are progressing and photography sessions will take place in November. Volunteers will be needed to help with appointment setups, working with families at the photography sessions, submitting photos for the activities pages and helping with creative de-sign. More information will be forthcoming in the Sunday bulletins and the Messenger.

Roof Maintenance/Improvements – President Jon Lamb updated the information on the roof situation. Two bids have been received and a 3rd is due soon. Final numbers will be sent to the Council Advisory team. A special congregational meeting will be held on September 14 to seek approval from our members to secure a loan to complete the necessary roof repairs. The lender is the synod’s Mission Investment Fund, which holds our boiler loan. In compliance with the church by-laws, notice of the meeting will be given in the Sun-day bulletins of August 31 and September 7th and a mailing sent to OSLC members to arrive the week of Sep-tember 2nd. ▪ New Business – There was no new business.

* At a special congregation meeting held on Sunday, September 14, voting members approved a resolution to repair and reroof portions of the church building. The work will be done this fall.

We are looking for people to join some Ministry Teams. The Stewardship Team and Evangelism Team are most in need of members. Please consider joining.

The Stewardship team shall help the members of Our Saviors grow in response to God’s love and grace by encouraging first fruits giving of time, talents, and resources. The team will be responsible for an annual stewardship program with complete records and results of each program maintained in the electronic files of the church. The team will assist in team leadership growth by developing training and programs as needed to help people grow in their faith in God and in their Christian leadership skills. The team will use the gifts and talents in-ventory completed by Our Saviors members to help ensure spiritual growth of each volunteer and to coordinate those volunteer opportunities.

The Evangelism Ministry Team shall coordinate the efforts of the members of OSLC to share with others the knowledge of Christ, encourage visitors to worship and become members and to aid in keeping current members active in the pursuit of knowing Christ.

OSLC Parish Planning Council Meeting Highlights for Tuesday, August 19, 2014

▪ Treasurer’s Report – July offering was close to budget, actually about $2600 short, but since expenses were $2800, only a difference of $200. For YTD we are $8,300 beyond our budgeted shortfall of $18,000 and will be behind $26,000 even if we make budget for the rest of the year. The good news is that August and No-vember both have 5 Sundays and beginning in August we will have money from the school district for rental of NHCP rooms.

▪ Pastor’s Report –

† Pastoral Activities

Baptism Ministry is a potential growth area; ideas are being sought to enhance this ministry. A series of wel-coming events is being planned for new members joining this fall.

† “God’s Work: Our Hands” - OSLC will partner with Zion on September 21 to work together, as witnesses to Jesus, on a community project. Christina Kadelbach is coordinating the effort at Our Savior’s. It will in-clude a potluck meal at Our Savior’s.

† Via de Cristo weekends will be held here on Oct. 9-12 (men’s) and Oct. 16-19 (women’s). This retreat min-istry is free and participation is encouraged.

† Leadership Retreat & Mission/Strategic Planning –The Practice Discipleship Training Event here at OSLC this fall is an alternative to the postponed leadership training. This training would help congregational teams (councils, boards, ministry teams) lead Practice Discipleship sessions in our church and the area. This year’s theme is the “Frame” curriculum and provides training and follow-up support from the NE MN synod. Reading of the Mission Table is strongly encouraged for church leaders in preparation for discussion at team meetings. Pr. Chris presented a basic outline for Mission/Strategic Planning.

† Future of the Library - The library, currently Fair Trade Store also, is underused and without a librarian. Suggestions are welcome as to the best way to utilize the library holdings and the space.

▪ Team Leader Reports

Christian Education - Sunday school kicks off with Rally Sunday registration on September 7, and the first day of classes on September 14. Several more teachers are needed as well as leadership for Adult Education and coordinator for the Prayer Warriors. The team will meet later this month to clean up the Sunday school rooms. Church Properties – The team will address the issue of fire extinguisher inspection. Roof matters will be dis-cussed under Old Business. Deacons – There is still one vacant spot for a female on the deacon’s ministry team. The deacon’s weekly meeting time has been changed to 5:30 to accommodate the new 6:30 Wednesday Alternative service. Evangelism - The ‘Know Your Neighbor’ pads will have a new insert asking visitors to stop at the Welcome Table in the narthex. New coffee mugs with the OSLC logo have been ordered and should arrive soon. Stewardship – A draft of the letter being sent to the congregation was discussed, updating our financial status, in particular the shortfall in the General Fund. It also includes information on how the Endowment Fund operates, a summary of the Boiler Fund finances and some ideas to encourage regular giving. Youth/Small Group Ministry – Christina Kadelbach · Youth: The July Mission trip went well and the Youth Board is now meeting to plan fall events. The 5.5K and 11K runs benefitting the Blue House Orphanage are scheduled for Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1. Softball playoff game was rained out and Wednesday game was forfeited. A new Bible study group is being organized for young adults, including college students who are living at home. Check “Youth News” in this issue for more activities. · Confirmation – A Kickoff event will be held for 9th graders. Interviews for this year’s confirmands will begin soon. Confirmation is scheduled for the afternoon of Saturday, October 25. · Small Groups will start up again in September and will include Bible studies, Book Club, Prayer groups, Quilting and more. Details are in the Messenger and Sunday bulletins. Worship, Arts and Music - Attendance at the 9:00 combined service this summer for June and July has been about equal to 2013. This August there were fewer people in attendance, but the offering is up. The Wednesday Alternative service will continue to be held on Wednesdays at 6:30. Tom Cawcutt will be join-ing the music staff next month.
