Launch of the Total Reward Statements (TRS)For a long time, Partners have focused on their financial reward. The John Lewis Partnership believe it’s more than that: it’s about the total package the John Lewis Partnership offers its Partners, about the breadth and depth of theirbenefits package, their professional development, the work environment, as well as their home and leisure life.

It was important for the John Lewis Partnership to use the Total Reward Statement to encourage Partners to understand what being a Partner meant to them by ensuring they had visibility of more aspects of their package and not just basic pay.

As a result, the Total Reward Statement did two jobs. It engaged Partners on a financial level and reinforced the idea that working at John Lewis or Waitrose is more than just a job.

The Total Reward Statement also forms the basis of firmly implanting the concept of Total Reward. So looking forward to Flexible Benefits, Partners can be confident that they have a choice of voluntary benefits to suit their personal requirements.

75,000 Staff - 75,000 OwnersIn 1929, John Spedan Lewis, the founder, created the John Lewis Partnership and gave it to his employees with an ultimate purpose to balance the happiness of Partners with a successful business.

Today, the John Lewis Partnership is a visionary and successful way of doing business, boldly putting the happiness of Partners at the centre of everything it does. As a co-owned business, it provides its 75,000 employees with ownership of the business, allowing them to benefit by having a share in its success.

The John Lewis Partnership offers a broad and comprehensive benefits package including a large array of voluntary and subsidised benefits. Further details and examples of these benefits can be seen at www.johnlewispartnership.co.uk

Communication of Total Reward through Total Reward Statements:The John Lewis Partnership rolled out Total Reward Statements incorporating a new form of technology to its 75,000 staff in John Lewis and Waitrose stores.

The paper-based Total Reward Statements included quick-response codes. These two-dimensional codes can be scanned using a smart phone to take employees directly to relevant information online.

Jon White, manager of leisure benefits at the John Lewis Partnership, said: “The problem with a paper statement is it is very static but the majority of JLP staff are not desk-based and do not have day-to-day access to a computer.

“We know that not everybody has got a smart phone, but it is a really good way of engaging with certain staff who are tech savvy, and with younger staff who are traditionally a much more difficult group to engage through printed material.”

The statements include three quick-response codes that focus on three different elements of the retailer’s benefits package.

When scanned, one code takes staff to online information about John Lewis Partnership’s final salary pension scheme.

White added: “A lot of staff find pensions a challenging topic to get into, so the quick-response code takes them directly to the relevant pages on our intranet.”

The second code leads employees to a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page.

The third code takes employees to the John Lewis Partnership’s new benefits website, which gathers its voluntary benefits package, PartnerChoice, in one place aswell as using Google maps to drive local offers. The statements and website are both provided by Edenred.

In development of its Total Reward Statements, the retailer also wanted to align these to its pay year. White explained:

“In April, it captures a new rate of pay and the recent bonus announcement, which was at the end of March. It now looks back at the financial year rather than just at a 12-month period.

“Our employees had been wanting something a bit more dynamic and easier to navigate. While our intranet is brilliant at being a repository of information, it is not really the easiest tool to use.”
