    Task 4:

    1. Why did you choose the text you are analysing?

I chose it because I really love the artist, I think Pulp are really interesting and they give off

an air of individuality that I appreciate. This was the first song that I had ever heard oftheirs so it holds some good memories for me.

    2. In what context did you encounter it?

I first encountered this video after I had heard the song for the first time a few years ago, I

was curious to see what the video was like as well.

    3. What influence do you think this context might have had on your interpretation of the text?

I dont think it really makes that much of a difference of how I interpreted the text, I enjoy

the video and the song a lot and how ever I look at it I see it both as a well-made and

interesting video and as an enjoyable song.

    4.

Which conventions of the genre do you recognize in the text?

Of the illustration genre there are many conventions that the video takes on board, for

instance the continual element of lyrics being described and shown to us as the viewer is

something that I would expect from a video of this genre. However as an Indie Rock/Pop

video, I would say that this is slightly unusual to most that you would see nowadays. This is

because the colour scheme and the mise en scene are just very unique and it makes the

video instantly recognisable as being Pulps.

    5. To what extent does this text stretch the conventions of its genre?

I think the video might a stretched a lot of conventions of the traditional music video, it is

very different and like I said before the colour scheme and the mise en scene is something

that is very unique and makes the video instantly recognisable. I think it would have

stretched a lot of peoples mind as to what the traditional music video should include and

the surrealist elements really transformed this ordinary illustration video into something

    quite magical.

    6.

Where and why does the text depart from the conventions of the genre? The whole video is a departure from the conventions of the genre, there is no time at all

when you realise that said departure, it is right at the beginning.

    7.

What sort of audience did you feel that the video was aimed at (and how typical was this of

    the genre/style of music)?

I would have said that it was aimed at an audience who are clearly fans of the band or

people who really resonate with the lyrics of the song and become empowered by the

message behind it. I would have said this was typical of the genre because people who liked

the band would be interested in the video and most people who like Pulps style of music

would probably really appreciate the more quirky things in life so therefore love this video.

    8.

What sort of person does it assume you are?

I would say it is like the song suggests, it assumes you are commonpeople.

    9. What assumptions seem to be made about your class, age, gender and ethnicity?

I think it assumes that you are from a working class background and are like I said above

common people. In regards to age, I would say that it would be between 16-34 and maybe

above that, I dont think it really specifies gender or ethnicity though.

    10.

What interests does it assume you have?

It assumes that you like the simple things in life and that you take pride in being a common

person, it makes to seem that liking things like sculpture and the finer things in life to be a

bit of a bore and that you should appreciate being a common person.

    11.

What relevance does the text actually have for you?

The text has some relevance to me I guess, not so much to do with the lyrics but more so

because I feel like Im the appropriate age to appreciate and enjoy the meaning behind the

    song.

    12.

What knowledge does it take for granted?

I think it assumes that you are this working class average joe like they are talking about,

whereas I think even if you arent from that world then you can still enjoy it and appreciate

    it.

    13.

To what extent do you resemble the 'ideal reader' that the video seeks to position you as?

I think to some extent I could be seen as the ideal reader, I think Im at the right age to enjoy

it and I think in some ways it is really empowering and it brings people together. The videoitself is very unusual and I enjoy well-made videos and this is one of them.

14.Are there any notable shifts in the video's style (and if so, what do they involve)?

No, there are hardly any quick shifts in the videos style.

    15.

What responses does the video seem to expect from you?

I think it expects you to get inspired by the video and it expects you to be empowered by it.

Also it expects you to enjoy Pulp as a band and to know what they are about.

    16.

How open to negotiation is your response (are you invited, instructed or coerced to respondin particular ways)?

You are definitely invited to enjoy the video, I think you can look at it either way as it being

a really good video and song or just as something that you dont enjoy and wont ever enjoy.

17.Is there any penalty for not responding in the expected ways?

No, not at all. I think if you dont respond in the expected way then the song can really just

made out to be about you.

    18.

To what extent do you find yourself 'reading against the grain' of the text and the genre?I think everything in the video is quite clear, there is nothing really to question or interpret.

The lyrics being sung relate to the visuals really well, it is all just laid out to you.

19.How typical do you think this video is of Music Videos?

Not very typical at all, I think this video in particular really set the bar for the videos that

    came after it.
