“I wanted to be a part of not only a university, but a community where both the mind and the spirit could flourish. That’s exactly what I have found at USF!” –Brian Isenbarger, Senior, Secondary Education

When you’re doing it right, choosing a college becomes a PERSONAL EXPERIENCE.Think about all you can do at the University of Saint Francis. Immerse yourself in the challenging academics. Get to know your professors one-on-one. Absorb the values lived every day in our Franciscan environment. Serve your community through the many opportunities provided through courses and on-campus organizations. And have fun! We have over 40 student-led clubs that can help you let loose after a hard day of studying. Try out the student life, where students get together for all-night movie marathons, random road trips and excellent comedians and live music. It’s all here for you. Make it yours!

You want a school that inspires you. An institution that helps mold you into a skilled, creative thinker with vast real-world opportunities. A university where you’re a member of a large family rather than just a number in a database. A safe haven that encourages your spiritual growth. And most importantly, a place where you can look back and proudly state, “I went there, it prepared me for my future, and I had the best time of my life.”

Ultimate Road Trippin’Ever wonder just how much fun you can have in an impromptu, 24-hour adventure? USF’s Ultimate Road Trip, a 10-year tradition, has made great places like Colorado Springs, Myrtle Beach, Dallas, Louisville, Nashville, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Atlanta, Charlotte, New York City and Philadelphia its destination for fun times. On Friday night, we pick a destination out of a hat, get on a bus and then we’re off! We drive all night Friday and arrive Saturday morning. Armed with just a map and loads of enthusiasm, we spend all day exploring. Saturday night we come back to campus, a little exhausted, but full of great stories and some of the best memories.

“I love how it feels like its own little community. I come here and I feel at home. I’m not just a number, but a face and a person. And there’s a lot to do! Something is happening every weekend, or students come up with something on their own. The doors on our floor are always open because we’re all friends.” – Samantha Hickle, Freshman, Communication Arts and Graphic Design

LASTING MEMORIES

Some of the best parts of your education will happen outside the classroom, so take part in campus life! The times between study sessions, while you’re catching an all-night movie marathon or enjoying some free food at Student Government’s annual ice cream social, are the heart and soul of your college experience. It’s a fact that students who are more involved in campus life do better in class. So when you’re looking at different schools, make sure there’s something to do with your out-of-classroom time. Your social life (and your grades) will appreciate it!

There’s a reason why residence halls are the ultimate collegiate experience. They’re where your social and academic lives collide, where roommates become best friends, study buddies become movie marathon partners, and Residence Assistants become the older sibling you never had. Luckily, USF offers three outstanding hall options to be your home away from home.

BONZEL HALL—Recently renovated, Bonzel consists of traditional, two-person rooms with community bathrooms. Plus, there’s a huge recreation area, computer labs and private study rooms in the basement.

CLARE HALL—The newest residence hall on campus is three stories of suite-style living. Two students share a room and a bathroom that connects to a room with two students on the other side. Each floor has a kitchenette, study lounge and laundry facility.

PADUA HALL—Padua is an apartment-style hall, with six to eight students per apartment. Students live in single or double rooms, with each unit housing large bathrooms, a kitchenette and lounge area.

A Few Cool Things About Living on Campus• Location, location, location: You’ll be close to class, campus activities, sports, group meetings, food—you name it. Plus, living closer

means getting to sleep just a little bit longer before your Monday morning class. (Wearing slippers to class is okay, too.)• Making friends: Chances are, even if you don’t find your future spouse here, you’ll befriend those who’ll stand up there with

you on that special day. • Free air-conditioning, phone, Internet and cable in every room! (Beats writing a check to the cable company.)• Did we mention food is nearby, and all you can eat? And there are five different dining locations on campus!• USF is a tobacco-free campus. For more information about smoking cessation, talk to an Admissions counselor.• Impromptu next-door study groups.• Movable furniture. Loft your bed and put your desk under it. Hide your

dresser in your closet, bring a sofa. It’s your space. Make it comfortable.

Not Living on Campus?

Get CONNECTEDIf you want to commute, we know you’ll be busy. You might not have the same opportunities to get involved on campus as the students who are here all the time. Our Connecting Commuters organization exists to make you feel more a part of the campus community. Expect free lunch and Gas Card Bingo. Also—watch out for the newsletter. (It has coupons!)

FRANCISCAN VALUESIt goes beyond our name—it’s part of your USF experience.

“Being a Peer Minister has greatly impacted my education at USF. Not only am I learning in the classroom, but I am also learning and growing in my faith each day. Sometimes the greatest things in life cannot be gained from a textbook, but the real lessons come from experience.” —Julie Murray, Junior, Theology

• Foster peace and justice.• Respect creation.

MissionRooted in the Catholic and Franciscan traditions of Faith and Reason, the University of Saint Francis engages a diverse community in learning, leadership and service.

Campus MinistryAs much a part of the University of Saint Francis fabric as the statue of St. Francis himself, Campus Ministry provides opportunities for worship, fellowship and spiritual growth for the entire campus. Our goal—to show each person God’s love— is exemplified by numerous activities:

• Full schedule of Catholic Masses• Confession, Adoration and other

prayer opportunities• Off-campus weekend retreats• Scripture and faith sharing groups• Concerts, coffeehouses, themed

lunches and other fellowship events

Peer MinistryInterested in administering, organizing and carrying out the mission of Campus Ministry? Become a Peer Minister and inspire your fellow classmates by sharing the joy and wisdom of God’s love.

Franciscan Service to the Community…and BeyondUSF FEEDS THE FORTIn the spirit of Catholic service, USF collected 138,164 food items to restock the food banks and kitchens in Fort Wayne over the past four years.

CENTER FOR SERVICE ENGAGEMENTWant to really put knowledge into action and create positive change in our world? The Center for Service Engagement can connect you with service opportunities at local and global nonprofit organizations. You can be an active citizen, enhance your learning and show a real commitment to USF’s Franciscan values of peace, justice and service.

GREEN CAMPUS INITIATIVEThe Green Campus Task Force has initiated lots of green-friendly campus changes, from recycled newspaper insulation in the new Clare Hall, to motion-sensor light switches, to more campus-area recycling bins. We even started loaning out bicycles to students for a returnable deposit. (That’s right, it’s free!)

CHECK IN WITH US!

Foursquare is a great way to meet up with friends and discover

new places. Check out who’s where at foursquare.com

USF is located in Fort Wayne, Ind., the second-largest city in the state. Fort Wayne is a city with a storied history that combines Midwestern hospitality with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Plus, it’s got multiple aliases: the City of Churches, City of Restaurants, the Summit City, and—awarded for the third time—an All-American City. It’s a perfect setting for your collegiate experience.

Rich in culture, Fort Wayne’s revitalized downtown area has numerous entertainment experiences for your hard-earned weekends. In just 15 minutes from campus, you can be enjoying art museums, dance clubs, sporting events, movie and classical theaters, performance venues, shopping and countless outstanding restaurants.

And — can you say, “Road Trip?” Fort Wayne is a convenient geographical area for checking out other amazing Midwestern cities. Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, Detroit and Chicago are all less than 200 miles away.

Fort Wayne’s pretty much got anything you’d want in a city. Did we mention Johnny Appleseed was buried here? Or that the television, refrigerator and jukebox were invented here, too? Your parents will eat that stuff up.

Page 15: Admissions Viewbook 2012

Hands-On LearningBeing the second-largest city in Indiana has other benefits. Fort Wayne is home to multiple Fortune 500 companies and hundreds of nonprofit organizations. Our students have a lot of internship opportunities—and an internship always looks good on a resume. Wouldn’t it be great to say you worked at Fox News, the United Way or a Level 1 Trauma Center before you even graduated?

Fort Wayne earned the moniker “Title Town” in 2009 when the Komets hockey team became Turner Cup three-peat champions and the San Diego Padres’ single A affiliate TinCaps baseball team earned their first-ever Midwest League championship. And, if you follow basketball, be sure to catch the NBA D-League’s Mad Ants in action.

Imagine a classroom in a tropical paradise, snorkeling and hiking. Led by USF Biology Professor Dr. Larry Wiedman, USF students do just that on Andros Island in the Bahamas (location of the world’s third-largest barrier reef). They also learn about Bahamian culture and conduct soccer clinics for local students. Students travel to the Bahamas each January and May. In fact, travel study is a general education opportunity, which means just about any student can participate!

Graduation: 1996

Take on USF: I am a nuclear medicine technologist at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Hobart, Ind., administering radioactive medicines to detect or treat disease. What satisfies me most is one-on-one contact with patients, and knowing that what I’m doing is making their health and lives better. Being a biology major and playing two sports at USF taught me to be extremely organized and to manage my time—huge factors for success in healthcare. My USF education strongly affected my life. My professors were extremely passionate, and made learning contagious.

Take on USF: I am a Defined Benefits Services Manager for Aon Hewitt in The Woodlands, Texas. I attribute my success in business to the immeasurable values I learned at USF. The integrity, honesty and courage have prepared me to make daily ethical decisions in the best interest of my clients. USF taught me that integrity is mandatory, not optional. The business department stressed the value of accountability, which has transferred to my current work environment. These values help me operate with grace under pressure, act with dignity and compassion to co-workers, and make a difference in the business world. I chose the classroom-intensive track for my degrees. I needed small class sizes and one-on-one instruction from my professors, and although the classes were small, they didn’t lack diversity. Not only did I reach my goals and learn from my professors, but I gained knowledge and perspective from my classmates.

Business is Good.At USF, business isn’t all about spreadsheets and profit margins. Our Franciscan values will teach you how to be a beacon for what is right and good about business.

We believe that entrepreneurship and commerce can be instruments for good, that business management skills are only as useful as your values, and that courage to do what is right defines the success of any enterprise.

You Have Options. You can concentrate on key business concepts and strategies in the classroom first and then focus on internships later (classroom intensive). Or, you can remove the walls between the classroom and workplace to experience extensive group learning and executive mentoring before you graduate (field intensive/EPIC program). Either way, at USF — business is good.

ONLY AT USF—BUSSE EPIC™ TRACKThis signature program provides students with two years of paid work experience while they’re working on a bachelor’s degree. Look at these benefits:

• Potential for higher starting salary after you graduate• Immediate experience in your field• Extensive industry connections with prestigious companies• Mentoring by experienced business executives

How is Business Done Overseas?Every year, Busse School of Business students have the opportunity to experience business in a foreign country. In 2010, students traveled to Brazil to study the use of sustainable fuels, and most recently, students went to Europe to study international commerce.

Graduation: 2007

Take on USF: I was hired by a prominent Fort Wayne design agency soon after I graduated and worked for them for two and a half years before starting my own one-man design business, which I’ve been successfully running for a year and a half now. There’s a lot I could say about Saint Francis—for one, the SOCA faculty are top-notch artists who genuinely take a personal interest and approach to your education—and they’re also just great people. I also loved the campus life, both as a student living in the dorms and as an art student working in the Rolland building until all hours of the night. And the design program and AAF advertising club give you great opportunities to make connections with professionals in the area. But the most important thing I learned at USF was how to learn and how to keep expanding my skill set outside the classroom setting.

They’re Kind of a Big Deal. Not only does the School of Creative Arts offer a world-class exhibition schedule in multiple galleries throughout the year, but it also provides opportunities for students to meet professional artists and communicators in person. Over the past year, a renowned painter, an exhibiting ceramicist, internationally recognized painters and photographers, groundbreaking photojournalists and musicians all made stops at USF to lecture and work with students in class and individually. (You can probably even get a photo with them if you ask nicely.)

It’s Your Time to Shine. Each fall and spring semester SOCA holds Talent Day, an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to submit an art or communication portfolio, or audition for talent scholarships. After being individually critiqued by a School of Creative Arts faculty member, students with the most inspired portfolio and audition will win USF scholarships. So show off your God-given talent and win a scholarship! (Please remember us when you’re famous.)

Take on USF: The small class sizes and accessibility of instructors at the University of Saint Francis helped me to excel in my undergraduate course work. The background knowledge in biology and chemistry that I obtained during my early years at USF definitely allowed me to excel in graduate school. The undergraduate curriculum at USF gave me a firm foundation to build upon.

Focus on HealthLife gets busy. As a result, people often don’t get the chance to make sure their body checks out okay. That’s why the School of Health Sciences hosts Focus on Health, a yearly event that provides free health checks including blood pressure, vision, height/weight/BMI, colorectal cancer screening kits and balance testing for age groups at risk, foot screening, skin screening, hearing screening and peripheral vascular mini-screens. There’s also an optional fasting blood chemistry test with cardiac profile offered, as well as a hemogram that tests for anemia, and mammograms.

Students from the nursing, radiologic technology, surgical technology, physical therapist assistant, physician assistant, psychology and exercise science programs participate in this popular event, along with student athletes and faculty.

USF Crown PointUSF opened a second location in Crown Point, Ind. Now we’re bringing our quality education to the Chicago area. USF offers undergraduate and graduate healthcare degrees in a brand new Crown Point facility with expansive classrooms and labs. Our students even receive hands-on experience working on health solutions for simulated patients. Online and hybrid (a mix of in-class and online) course options create flexibility for busy working students who want to take their careers to the next step.

Page 24: Admissions Viewbook 2012

A Heart for ServiceIf you’re passionate about service, consider social work. You can work with hospice patients to write their “Life Stories,” interview hospice staff to create a “Chicken Soup for Hospice Caregivers,” partner with Habitat for Humanity to build a house for others less fortunate, or work with refugees from all over the world.

Through assignments such as “Mission Impossible,” you will participate in a public transportation scavenger hunt of social service agencies, and visit culturally unique settings such as Buddhist temples, international grocers and apartment complexes with large refugee populations.

Experience MattersOur education students receive classroom experience in their first year, and they accumulate over 150 hours of field work before they even start their student teaching. That kind of experience—and a USF degree on your resume—will give you a big advantage in securing a teaching job after you graduate!

Take on USF: I am in my third year as Northwood Middle

School principal in Fort Wayne. During those years, our ISTEP

scores have increased, and the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette recently

spotlighted me in an article about the success of my staff and

students. The most rewarding part of my job is making a positive

impact on my students and staff. My greatest joy is when my

school does well because that shows me I am leading them in

the right direction. USF uniquely prepared me for my career

by showing a genuine interest in me. I never felt alone or lost

because my professors cared for me and wanted me to be

successful. Each of them made the extra effort to prepare me

for the education field. They instilled in me the value of keeping

the student first and doing whatever it takes to ensure each one

succeeds. My USF experience and what I learned still guide

me today.25

Undecided? The Academic Exploration program is here to help.Thousands of college freshmen start classes unsure of what they want to study. Maybe they have a vague idea but don’t know the path to get there. So they don’t declare a major. If you’re in that boat, it’s okay to start school undecided. It’s a good idea to spend the time to make sure you’re taking the path that’s right for you. That’s where we come in. We want to help get you there in a way that makes sense for you.

In the AE program, your academic adviser will help you choose classes to explore different majors, while keeping you on track to graduate in four years. Think of it as an academic buffet. You can sample biology, binge on English or nibble on philosophy.

It’s Worth It.It’s no secret—figuring out how to pay for college is challenging, especially at a private institution. The truth is, we’re one of the most affordable private universities in Indiana. To figure out just how affordable we are, complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before March 10. Then we’ll be able to tell you what kind of federal or state assistance you will receive for the year.

We also award students for the work they’ve done in school through our Academic Scholarship Program. For recent high school graduates, scholarships range from $2,500 to $8,000, based on a combination of GPA and SAT or ACT scores. Transfer students can also receive scholarships based on their cumulative GPAs. (We’re one of the few schools to have scholarships just for our transferring students.)

If you’ve got talent, we want to know. Scholarships in art and athletics are also available. These are awarded on an individual basis, so be sure to contact a coach or a representative from the School of Creative Arts. There’s nothing like getting paid to play soccer or guitar!

Still not sure if this is an affordable option? Visit the Financial Aid page of our website to find various resources for outside funding and payment options. While you’re there, fill out a free application. WHY USF?

“I have really enjoyed the experiences and knowledge of the instructors. The personal attention I have received from my professors has been extraordinary. I have never had an instructor care about my success as the instructors at this university.” –Nathan Smith, Senior, Communication

“The professors here really care about their students’ education. They are always willing to give extra help if needed and students are always welcomed in their offices to talk about any situation.” –Casey Loshe, Sophomore, Accounting

“I knew USF was the school for

me when I came here on a visit

and the faculty and staff members

were flexible and accommodating,

all with a great big smile. I

immediately got involved with

everything I could, especially

Campus Ministry, and made

friends who eventually turned

into my second family.”

–Jaxson Burkins, Junior, Accounting

“I wanted to come to USF because of the atmosphere. Everyone here knows everyone and it creates a one-of-a-kind USF family.” –Amber Huges, Senior, Social Work
