Ultimate Road Trippin’Ever wonder just how much fun you can have in an impromptu, 24-hour adventure? USF’s Ultimate Road Trip, a 10-year tradition, has made great places like Colorado Springs, Myrtle Beach, Dallas, Louisville, Nashville, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Atlanta, Charlotte, New York City and Philadelphia its destination for fun times. On Friday night, we pick a destination out of a hat, get on a bus and then we’re off! We drive all night Friday and arrive Saturday morning. Armed with just a map and loads of enthusiasm, we spend all day exploring. Saturday night we come back to campus, a little exhausted, but full of great stories and some of the best memories.

There’s a reason why residence halls are the ultimate collegiate experience. BONZEL HALL—Recently renovated, Bonzel consists of traditional, two-person rooms with community bathrooms. Plus, there’s a huge recreation area, computer labs and private study rooms in the basement.

CLARE HALL—The newest residence hall on campus is three stories of suite-style living. Two students share a room and a bathroom that connects to a room with two students on the other side. Each floor has a kitchenette, study lounge and laundry facility.

PADUA HALL—Padua is an apartment-style hall, with six to eight students per apartment. Students live in single or double rooms, with each unit housing large bathrooms, a kitchenette and lounge area.

Imagine a classroom in a tropical paradise, snorkeling and hiking. Led by USF Biology Professor Dr. Larry Wiedman, USF students do just that on Andros Island in the Bahamas (location of the world’s third-largest barrier reef). They also learn about Bahamian culture and conduct soccer clinics for local students. Students travel to the Bahamas each January and May. In fact, travel study is a general education opportunity, which means just about any student can participate!

Take on USF: I was hired by a prominent Fort Wayne design agency soon after I graduated and worked for them for two and a half years before starting my own one-man design business, which I’ve been successfully running for a year and a half now. There’s a lot I could say about Saint Francis—for one, the SOCA faculty are top-notch artists who genuinely take a personal interest and approach to your education—and they’re also just great people. I also loved the campus life, both as a student living in the dorms and as an art student working in the Rolland building until all hours of the night. And the design program and AAF advertising club give you great opportunities to make connections with professionals in the area. But the most important thing I learned at USF was how to learn and how to keep expanding my skill set outside the classroom setting.

They’re Kind of a Big Deal.Not only does the School of Creative Arts offer a world-class exhibition schedule in multiple galleries throughout the year, but it also provides opportunities for students to meet professional artists and communicators in person. Over the past year, a renowned painter, an exhibiting ceramicist, internationally recognized painters and photographers, groundbreaking photojournalists and musicians all made stops at USF to lecture and work with students in class and individually. It’s Your Time to Shine.Each fall and spring semester SOCA holds Talent Day, an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to submit an art or communication portfolio, or audition for talent scholarships. Take on USF: The small class sizes and accessibility of instructors at the University of Saint Francis helped me to excel in my undergraduate course work. The background knowledge in biology and chemistry that I obtained during my early years at USF definitely allowed me to excel in graduate school. The undergraduate curriculum at USF gave me a firm foundation to build upon.

Focus on HealthLife gets busy. As a result, people often don’t get the chance to make sure their body checks out okay. That’s why the School of Health Sciences hosts Focus on Health, a yearly event that provides free health checks including blood pressure, vision, height/weight/BMI, colorectal cancer screening kits and balance testing for age groups at risk, foot screening, skin screening, hearing screening and peripheral vascular mini-screens. There’s also an optional fasting blood chemistry test with cardiac profile offered, as well as a hemogram that tests for anemia, and mammograms.

Students from the nursing, radiologic technology, surgical technology, physical therapist assistant, physician assistant, psychology and exercise science programs participate in this popular event, along with student athletes and faculty.

USF Crown PointUSF opened a second location in Crown Point, Ind. Now we’re bringing our quality education to the Chicago area. USF offers undergraduate and graduate healthcare degrees in a brand new Crown Point facility with expansive classrooms and labs. Our students even receive hands-on experience working on health solutions for simulated patients. Online and hybrid (a mix of in-class and online) course options create flexibility for busy working students who want to take their careers to the next step.

A Heart for ServiceIf you’re passionate about service, consider social work. You can work with hospice patients to write their “Life Stories,” interview hospice staff to create a “Chicken Soup for Hospice Caregivers,” partner with Habitat for Humanity to build a house for others less fortunate, or work with refugees from all over the world.

Through assignments such as “Mission Impossible,” you will participate in a public transportation scavenger hunt of social service agencies, and visit culturally unique settings such as Buddhist temples, international grocers and apartment complexes with large refugee populations.

Undecided? The Academic Exploration program is here to help.Thousands of college freshmen start classes unsure of what they want to study. Maybe they have a vague idea but don’t know the path to get there. So they don’t declare a major. If you’re in that boat, it’s okay to start school undecided. It’s a good idea to spend the time to make sure you’re taking the path that’s right for you. That’s where we come in. We want to help get you there in a way that makes sense for you.

In the AE program, your academic adviser will help you choose classes to explore different majors, while keeping you on track to graduate in four years. Think of it as an academic buffet. You can sample biology, binge on English or nibble on philosophy.

TRiOThe United States government recently awarded us a grant to fund TRiO, a program that allows us to help first-generation and low-income students. It’s Worth It.It’s no secret—figuring out how to pay for college is challenging, especially at a private institution. The truth is, we’re one of the most affordable private universities in Indiana. To figure out just how affordable we are, complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before March 10. Then we’ll be able to tell you what kind of federal or state assistance you will receive for the year.

We also award students for the work they’ve done in school through our Academic Scholarship Program. For recent high school graduates, scholarships range from $2,500 to $8,000, based on a combination of GPA and SAT or ACT scores. Transfer students can also receive scholarships based on their cumulative GPAs. (We’re one of the few schools to have scholarships just for our transferring students.)

If you’ve got talent, we want to know. Scholarships in art and athletics are also available. These are awarded on an individual basis, so be sure to contact a coach or a representative from the School of Creative Arts. There’s nothing like getting paid to play soccer or guitar!

While you’re there, fill out a free application. Once we have your application and FAFSA, you’ll receive an award letter detailing all the financial assistance for which you are eligible as a USF student. Why wait when you can find out now?
