Our personalized approach provides opportunities for dialogue and collaboration between professors and students, making Belmont a place where students can reach their full potential.

It’s all part of what it means to be student-centered, a critical component of the “Be Belmont” mentality. Of course, that’s a commitment that’s much easier to make with a 13:1 student to faculty ratio.

Belmont is devoted to being a premier teaching institution. What that means to you is that while our faculty are constantly researching and growing in their individual fields, their primary focus is on capturing the best methods to teach. They work diligently at creating the best classroom experience possible.

Apparently, it’s an approach that’s working as U.S. News & World Report has ranked Belmont among the top institutions in the nation for its strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and learning communities. That same publication has praised Belmont for its environment of innovation. Belmont’s widely-known Music Business program was the first in a number of pioneering, interdisciplinary academic programs that link classroom education with real-life experience. Other majors that cross conventional boundaries include New Century Journalism, Social Entrepreneurship and Religion & the Arts.

“I applied to 27 schools,” she recalls. “I’d received some good offers from other places, but I couldn’t get Belmont out of my head. Their mission statement aligned exactly with the things I try to uphold and the things I strive for.”

She’s taken that mission statement to heart and is living out its idea of empowering students to “engage and transform the world.” When not in class, JoAnna teaches tap and ballet to low-income children, tutors student athletes and serves as

a group fitness instructor on campus. She’s also very involved with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.

And that lifestyle of service will continue after graduation. The winner of the Hale Leadership Award her freshman year, JoAnna plans to eventually practice neonatology or women’s health, with the goal of someday opening a clinic for women in the Middle East. “I want to find a way to be a change agent for women in that culture.”

“Belmont was the first out of the gate,” he says of the program, which launched in 2009. “This generation is a generation that wants to make a difference. They’re concerned about social problems. They want to lead more meaningful lives,” he says.

Two decades of working tirelessly on behalf of nonprofits in Nashville has given Dr. Turner strong ties to the community – ties that help in placing his students in internships

or jobs. “My job is to connect organizations with our faculty, staff and students, exposing them to hands-on, practical opportunities.”

Holding a master’s in philanthropy and development, an MBA in organizational administration and a doctorate in education, Dr. Turner also specializes in grant writing, a skill which comes in handy for many of his students as they launch their own ventures.

Dr. Turner was first attracted to Belmont because of its pioneering social entrepreneurship major.

At the heart of what it means to “Be Belmont” lies a Christian community of learning and service where students hear from their first visit to campus until the day they graduate that they are created for a purpose in life.

The Belmont faculty and staff dedicate themselves to preparing and empowering students to find their passion and use it to change the world.

In fact, Belmont students are consistently challenged to see service as the means for achieving meaning in life. Students are encouraged to engage and transform the world, locally and globally, by participation in such projects as disaster relief trips to earthquake-stricken Haiti, medical missions to Guatemala and sports evangelism expeditions to South Africa as well as volunteering at homeless shelters and community organizations in downtown Nashville.

Clearly, the Belmont mission is about shaping the whole person: intellectually, physically, socially and spiritually. While worship remains a personal choice at Belmont, students do enjoy the benefits of living and learning in a Christian community and are challenged to explore their beliefs through required religion courses. In addition, the Office of Spiritual Development offers a variety of speaker series, Bible studies, service opportunities, chapel programs, retreats and small groups to help students connect with faith and with one another.

When you’re not hitting the books, Belmont University’s beautiful 75-acre campus is brimming with possibilities to help you enjoy your new home-away-from-home. Both residential and commuter students spend time in the Beaman Student Life Center, the hub of campus activities, where you’ll find a top-notch fitness center, rec gym and group fitness room as well as Belmont’s famed rock-climbing wall. A great place to study or simply hang out, the Beaman sits between the Curb Event Center, a 5,000-seat sports and entertainment complex, and the Caf, where you’ll discover a wide array of dining options. And it’s all only steps away from one of the most beautiful—and historic—quads around, perfect for outdoor studies and Frisbee practice.

When you’re ready to delve more deeply into campus life and connect with community, Belmont more than cooperates with 100+ recognized student organizations to choose from—including the Our Natural Environment (ONE) Club, Belmont Volunteers for Literacy, the Belmont Rugby Club, nine Greek organizations, numerous service-minded groups and several niche honor societies.

Of course, sports fans have plenty to cheer with 17 NCAA Division I teams to follow—Go Bruins!—not to mention intramural options you know and love (flag football, basketball, tennis, etc.) along with a few you’ll love to learn (futsal, water balloon dodgeball). The university Program Board will keep you busy as well with a wide variety of campus-wide socials, movie nights, concerts and the annual Fall Follies show, a “Saturday Night Live”-like student production that is not intended for the humor-impaired.

The rare place that combines small-town charm with big city possibilities, Nashville provides the backdrop for an amazing college experience while setting the stage for limitless career potential. Local internship opportunities are plentiful—in fact, Belmont students have connected with the Country Music Association, Columbia/HCA, The Tennessean, Gibson Guitar and major PR firms, among others.

Naturally, music plays an undeniable role in Nashville’s culture. In Music City, U.S.A., you’ll find performance halls, studios and clubs around every corner. In fact, historic Music Row is located walking-distance from Belmont’s campus! Famous musical landmarks adorn the streets of Nashville, including the Ryman Auditorium, the Music City Walk of Fame and the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Apart from the significant music industry and healthcare presence, Nashville is also home to major printing and publishing companies, denominational headquarters, banking and advertising and media agencies. Oh, and did we mention it’s the state capital, too?

Nashville also offers countless opportunities for fun with professional sports teams (the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, hockey’s Nashville Predators, baseball’s Nashville Sounds and soccer team the Nashville Metros) and numerous art museums, parks and outdoor recreational areas. Plus, Nashville boasts the reputation of being the Athens of the South with more than 20 colleges and universities located in the area.

Belmont University was his first and only choice, and from the minute he arrived on campus, he dove right in. Since then he’s served as a resident assistant, president of the Black Student Association (BSA), vice president of the Pre-Law Society and as a student justice. He also interns with the United States Attorney’s Office, which is great preparation for his future career in law.

“It’s important to give back and to receive from your community. It makes you a better student,” Robert explains.

“Being involved is just another aspect of the Belmont experience, and it makes me take ownership of my school.”

His activities outside the classroom have provided what he calls an “umbrella of opportunity,” introducing him to new friends, new ideas and important future contacts.

“If you just confine your education to the classroom, it limits you. I believe when you get out of your comfort zone, that’s when you truly achieve,” Robert says. “I’ve really grown at Belmont. With all they offer here, it has been a great fit.”

Eager to get involved, Abby wound up volunteering for the security detail, checking credentials at the VIP entrance. It’s something she rates as “one of the coolest experiences of my college career… It really let me see what my major could become. It was applicable to the real world.”

The personal involvement of her Belmont professors led to other opportunities, too, including a summer internship at a senator’s Washington, D.C. office. “Doors were opened

to me because of my advisor and professors. They see the connections they can give to students.”

Outside of classes, Abby is involved as a Bruin Recruiter, in student government and in Greek life. “Belmont has introduced me to so many incredible people and allowed me to find those with similar interests and fun stories and different backgrounds that challenge me.”

Abby started at Belmont the year the school hosted the Town Hall Presidential Debate.
