PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE
that before the end of the year there will be
major repair works in some classrooms and
verandahs, painting of some buildings, some
flooring, updating of the school kitchen as well
as major work on the covered walkways. While
this will cause some disruptions while the work
is being completed, it will have our school
looking great.
As a small school, our students are given
opportunities that larger schools often do not
provide. We actively encourage every student
to shine their light by taking up challenges and
working to constantly learn. This has been
exemplified by the active participation by a
large number of our students in the Albury
Wodonga Eisteddfod. Right now we are building
towards the school performance. It has been
exciting to see the number of students who
have put up their hand to take on a lead role in
the play. This year we are excited to bring the
well-known “Jungle Book” to the stage. For our
lead actors, the hard work now begins as they
learn their lines as well as their songs. If your
child has a role please ask how you can help
them learn their lines and get into their
character. There will be more news soon.
Unfortunately there has been a persistent
problem with students being infected with head
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
It was great to have so many parents, relatives
and friends join us for our Education Week
Open Classrooms. As a school, we enjoyed the
opportunity to share what we have been
learning and doing in each of our classes.
Rather than putting on a special event or
performance we wanted to showcase the school
and the work that we do each day in educating
our wonderful students. Our students were also
excited to be able to show how they are shining
their lights through their efforts in class.
Despite it being a cold and very windy day, we
had a great many parents and grandparents in
the school and enjoying our community morning
tea. Thank you to everyone who was involved.
Recently, Oaklands Central School was visited
by members of the Department of Education
(DoE) Asset Management Team. The team was
here to plan for a major round of maintenance
works to be carried out around our school. We
are proud of the physical environment of our
school and work hard to make it a pleasant
learning space for students. It is anticipated
lice this year. They are very contagious so it will
take a concerted effort across the school to
stop this infestation. It would greatly assist if
every parent inspects their child’s head each
day and takes appropriate action if they
discover any signs of the head lice. There are
also some simple precautions that your child can
take to stop being infested. These include; not
sharing clothes or hats, keeping long hair tied
up at school, avoid sharing head wear of any
kind, avoiding head to head contact with others
and putting jumpers, hats and other clothing in
your bag when they are not being worn.
Additional information will be provided to
parents soon.
Peter Craft Principal
And just like that we are off and racing into
Term 3! There is a lot happening this term
with the whole school performance, carnivals
and excursions all underway. It is great to see
students making the most out of all the
learning and extra-curricular opportunities
they are given.
Last Thursday we were lucky enough to have
the Alpha Show come to Oaklands and perform
‘ C i n d e r e l l a ’ . I t w a s a m a g i c a l
performance and I must say, I think I enjoyed
the show just as much, if not more than the
students. I look forward to watching next
years performance of ‘Aladdin’.
PRIMARY NEWS
Key Points: Thank you to all our parents and
community members who joined us for
Education Week. It was a great
celebration last Friday
Oaklands Central School will have major
maintenance works performed during the
last half of the year
The School Performance (The Jungle
Book) is coming soon and students are
actively involved
There is a head lice infestation and we
need parental help to control it.
I would like to start by letting you in on a little
secret…. Positive experiences change the brain
by making happy connections between the
thinking brain and the feeling brain. The more
happy connections that survive and thrive... the
more learning occurs. Here are 7 things that we
should all practice each day to remain happy.
THE SEVEN SECRETS
1. Prioritize emotions. At every opportunity
across every subject discuss, explore, model and
acknowledge feelings.
2. Engage strengths. At every opportunity
across every subject observe, coach, balance,
coordinate, encourage, insist, and embolden
positive emotional strengths because emotional
strength is just another descriptor of emotional
intelligence.
3. Envision possibilities. At every opportunity
across every subject teach students to
construct and deconstruct experience to avoid
affective dissonance. The brain is hard-wired for
optimism so teach students how to use their
brains to spin straw into gold.
4. Activate positive memory. At every
opportunity across every subject engender the
positive emotions associated with prior positive
experience. The brain is a reservoir of positive
emotional experiences that can be siphoned to
reinvigorate learning as needed.
HEAD TEACHER NEWS Last Thursday, students from Years 2-6 headed
over to Urana to celebrate Local Government
Week by attending a BBQ lunch and presentation
for the competition our primary students
participated in as a part of the celebrations.
Well done to these students for their efforts in
working on their writing pieces about their
respective topics and congratulations to Jack,
Emily and Elise for walking away with some prizes
in recognition of their quality learning.
Last Wednesday we also had a large group of
students attend the Finley PSSA Athletics
Carnival. We once again were very proud of how
our students represented our school and are
very excited to have a number of students make
it on to the Riverina carnival. We wish Halle,
Talara, Matthew, Jarvis, Nicholas and Nate all
the best as they represent OCS and the Finley
PSSA at the Riverina Athletics Carnival in Week
6.
Don’t forget we will be having the Whole School
Assembly on Wednesday 21st August, at 9:15am.
We hope you can come along!
Book Week is quickly approaching as it is to be
held in Week 7! On Friday 6th of September, we
will be having our annual Book Parade and Teddy
Bear Sleepover! So start thinking about what
favourite book character you will be dressing up
as and join in the celebrations and fun. Please
refer to the flyer in the newsletter for more
information or contact the school.
Sally McRorie Assistant Principal
5. Encourage positive self-narrative. At every
opportunity across every subject help
students influence or change a student's
self-narrative from failure avoiding or failure
accepting to a success expecting. The brain is a
narrative brain and the stories it tells
itself anticipate and predict outcome.
6. Discourage fear. At every opportunity across
every subject teach students to relax and feel
emotionally safe because fear is at the root of
emotional, social, and academic failure. The brain
seizes in fear and inhibits new learning
because, while fear may force extrinsic
compliance, it cannot move the positive emotions
that inspire intrinsic motivation.
7. Create flow. At every opportunity across
every subject spark innate curiosity and don't
interrupt the pursuit of it. The brain is an avid
and self-interested learner when new
connections are stimulated to grow and flow and
obsolete connections discarded.

REFLECTING ON THE PAST FORTNIGHT…
Education Week- Last week we celebrated
Education Week. The theme ‘Every student,
every voice’ is one we continually work on in
Secondary. The open classrooms and morning
tea was a time to celebrate the wonderful school
we have here at OCS. Thank you to Jadzia for
making cupcakes for all the students to promote
student voice.
Albury Wodonga Eisteddfod
During Week 2 we had Noah and Acacia
compete at the Albury Wodonga Eisteddfod.
They both came equal first in their section. A
top effort and a true credit to both of them.
Riverina Athletics
Well done to the students who competed in the
Riverina Carnival in Albury. Jackson, Connor F,
Jadzia, Bailey, David and Jordan all did their
best as they competed in various events. Thank
you to the parents who also came along and
supported their children.

Cows create careers is a school based concept
where calves are fed, housed and loved at
participating schools for a short period.
Promoted and arranged by Dairy Australia.
We were grateful to have two Friesian calves
loaned to us by Riverina Milk. A big thanks goes
out to Mr Nathan Simpson for his
assistance.
Cows create careers establishes inventory
concerning curriculum assignments, health
criteria, weight gain measuring and welfare
issues, all relevant for future employment of
young people towards the dairy industry.
RAP 15/U BASKETBALL
Jackson and Connor are preparing the trailer that was used to pick up the calves. The crate on the trailer was kindly given to us for the duration of two weeks to transport the calves by Jimmy Beale.
Straw hay from WB Hunters Corowa. The straw was used in their shelter for warmth.
This is what we were feeding the calves over the period that we had them. The one on the left is milk replacement. It is in a powder form and we mixed it with warm water. The one on the right is weaning pellets. We had a small container in the enclosure that we filled up every morning.
Ben and Oddie (affectionately named) have settled and are jumping and playing around.
Noah and Yvonne feeding the calves milk replacement.
The sad departure of the calves had come so everybody had one last goodbye photo Peter Longmire Agriculture
RAP 15/U BASKETBALL
Our RAP boys came together in Leeton in Week
2 for the first rounds of the CHS Knockouts.
Many had played together a few weeks earlier
in the AFL which was great as they already
knew each other. Our first game was against
Leeton. Our boys got off to a great start and
didn’t let Leeton get too far in front.
Unfortunately, their experience shone through
and they defeated RAP 69-21. Charlie was the
top scorer with 10 points with Lachlan, the two
Blakes and Zac all contributing to the score.
Our second game was against Murrumbidgee
High where RAP were defeated 40-31. Right
from the start it looked like this was going to
be a much closer game. All the boys stepped up
our baseline defence with Kayden and Blake
holding solid and Zac, Jack and Bailey hassling
the ball carriers and getting turn overs. Our
top points scorer was Charlie on 24 points with
Lachlan, Zac and Blake also scoring baskets.
Our last game was against Yanco which was a
close game from start to finish with RAP being
in front by 1 point heading into the last
quarter. All the boys were eager to get on the
scoreboard in the first half with many missed
baskets throughout the game. It was great
though to see the boys gain confidence and
drive the ball in for a layup. Lachlan used his
speed to his advantage and turned over the ball
a number of times. This game was a little more
free flowing and our boys realised giving the
ball to Charlie and Blake were the best options
to winning. In the end this strategy worked with
RAP defeating Yanco 52-38. Charlie once again
showed his ability, top scoring with 30 points, 12
points to Blake, 2 points to Zac, Blake, Jack,
Bailey & Lachlan. Well done to all the boys for
their sportsmanship and effort on the day. For
many it was their first real game of competitive
basketball and it was great to see their
knowledge and confidence improve. Thank you
also to the parents that provided transport and
for your assistance on the day. Without the
support of the parents the students would not
be able to participate in these days.
Thank you.
Team L-R: Blake (BCS), Kayden (HCS),
Zac (BCS), Charlie (APCS), Jack (BCS),
Blake (APCS), Bailey (OCS), Lachlan (HCS).

The Oaklands P and C and Oaklands Pool Committee would like to wholeheartedly thank the
Oaklands community and school families for their kind donations of food and time for the ‘Sandy
Mount’ Clearing Sale fundraiser. The response to our fundraising efforts was overwhelming. What
an amazing community we belong to. Despite more people than expected on both days of the
clearing sales, we are happy to report that the fundraiser went off without a hitch.
We would like to thank the Kerr families for this opportunity. You have been such an integral part
of our community and you will be missed. We wish you every happiness in your future
endeavours.
Thank you, Louise Smith and the ladies who volunteered to make the sandwich plates, Pam
Danaher, Leeanne and Peter Dalitz and the Oaklands Central School students who enthusiastically
volunteered, David, Jacob, Tahlia, Amber, Noah, Jadzia, and Bailey, as well as the wonderful
representatives from both committees who pulled it all together.
The ‘Sandy Mount’ Clearing Sale Fundraiser was such a success, everyone involved worked
together, volunteering and donating what they were able. We fundraised $3,000 dollars for each
committee. Thank you and well done, we couldn’t have achieved this without your support.
