PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE

Our staff started the year off with a Staff Development Day on the Tuesday before our students started. During the day staff undertook mandatory training as well as working on the school plan. This work ensured that we have clearly mapped out the improvement measures designed to improve students learning. During the last few years we have seen the impact of such professionalism with data showing that our students continue to grow academically. This is reflected in the exciting news that our Higher School Certificate student gained university entry into Agriculture, the course area he was seeking to continue his studies in. This continues the trend of students going onto university after completing their Higher School Certificate at Oaklands Central School.

We also officially welcomed Judy McGuiness, who is joining our school as the Acting Assistant Principal for first semester. Judy will be teaching our Yr 2/3 students. We wish her all the best.

This year is an exciting year with a number of important projects underway. In all that we do, the goal is simply to improve learning and skill development for students. We are continuing our strong focus on continuing our staff

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back to everyone. The start of a new school year is always an exciting time for our school community. There is always a sense of anticipation as we launch into learning and all the activities that make up a school year. It has been wonderful to see all our new and returning students coming to school with such enthusiasm. I would like to give a special welcome to our new kindergarten students. They have settled in quickly to the routine of school and are enjoying learning about school life. Our students have also been actively participating in the annual swim school, leading up to our Swimming Carnival. We are very lucky to have experienced swimming teachers who help our students as they develop their swimming skills. This year our Swimming Carnival will be run as a day event. It is always a great community event and we encourage every family to join with us for the morning of the carnival. There isalready a friendly rivalry building between the houses, with students from both houses keen to win the house competition.

professional learning so that our students are provided with the best learning outcomes possible. As a school we are fortunate to have skilled, professional and enthusiastic teachers who care deeply about teaching and learning. Our focus on collaborative professional learning builds on these strengths improving learning for our students. Improvements in literacy through the Super6, the implementation of the Early Action for Success strategy and building on numeracy continue to be a real focus in the school. Oaklands Central School is currently investing in new technology, including a green screen and new Ipads supporting our work in 21st Century Learning to ensure that our stu-dents are well prepared as young people in our society. These focus areas are addressed in the School Plan.

Finally, a teacher wrote a poem to express her hopes for her new students. I think the poem expresses our aims at Oaklands:

Welcome to a new year. I am so glad that you're here.

Here is a little goodie bag to help kick off the year.

The eraser is to remind you that it's okay to make mistakes.

We'll work and learn together, no matter what it takes.

The stickers mean we'll stick together and work hard as a team.

The puzzle shows how we fit together, working towards a common theme.

The bookmark is to show you You always have a place.

If you ever feel a little lost We'll help you find your space.

The Smarties are to remind you how smart I think you are.

Work hard and do your best Remember to aim far!

Peter Craft Principal

Welcome back, I hope you all had a wonderful and well-earned holiday with friends and family. I am very excited to be given an amazing opportunity to join the wonderful team of Oaklands Central School. Thank you to Miss McRorie for all the hard work that she did at the school and I wish her well as she starts her position as Assistant Principal at The Rock. To all the staff, students, parents and wider school community thank you for making me feel so welcomed.

It has already been a busy start to 2020, with swimming starting on January 29th and finishing on February 7th. We then jump straight into the OCS Swimming Carnival on Monday 10th February. Please remember to have all students’ items of clothing clearly labelled as this will assist with returning them to their owner at the end of the day if they are lost.

The students have settled back into school, especially our new Kindergartens, who are very enthusiastic about their learning.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to come and see me.

Judy McGuiness Acting Assistant Principal

Welcome back to 2020. We are looking forward to a productive year of learning ahead of us. Reminding you all of our three strategic directions, as this will be our final year before we develop a new school plan. Firstly, there is ‘Learning’. In secondary we are working towards teachers being leaders in

their subject area and being up to date with effective teaching methods. Across secondary this year we will look at utilising the literacy and numeracy progressions to help track and grow students. We also work towards student driven individualised learning plans, so students are working towards their own learning goals.

Secondly, we have ‘Teaching’. In secondary this is to ensure that students have access to engaging and challenging learning experiences. Teachers across secondary will be participating in a number of professional learning opportunities to continue to grow their practice. Secondary staff will be using coaching to help staff self-reflect and collaborate to ensure students are getting access to high quality learning experiences. Staff will also be sharing their progress of their students as a result of these strategies.

Finally, we have ‘School Growth’. In secondary we hold our connections with the local community high on our priority list. It is important that we all work together enabling individual students to become successful and happy future citizens. Students are encouraged to take on leadership roles and build their confidence through various opportunities as they progress through school. We will also be keeping our eyes and ears open for any community projects that we can be involved in this year.

Over the next couple of weeks secondary students will be participating in swim school as they prepare for the swimming carnival and learn a number of life-saving skills. It is fantastic to see the growth in confidence and skills over the two weeks of swimming.

Our Year 7 student has been involved in BEST Start this week and our Year 11 students will participate in the RAP Induction Camp in Week 3.

May this year be a big growth year for our learning across secondary!
