…And Speaking about MusicLast week’s article illustrated the power of music to inspire us. The Country Music series presented on PBS and produced by Ken Burns recalls our history as a people and nation. Artists of Country and Western music were able to capture a spectrum of human emotion by vocalizing it through lyric and musical expression. The beauty that music inspires in us transcends the limits of our human imagination and invites us to touch the divine. It is easily

accessed—something we can all enjoy together—though it helps to have proper pitch when singing as a group.

Last April, we farewelled our beloved Music Director, Corliss Greene. She served as director for 20 years and the St. Mary Community appreciated her resolve to lift the spirits of the assembly through music. Recently a group of parish leaders and choir members interviewed qualified candidates who applied for the position. They recommended and we unanimously agreed to appoint Mr. Percival Perlas as the new Music Director at St. Mary.

Percival was born in Hayward, CA. He attended 18 years of Catholic School including Moreau High School in the East Bay. He holds an undergraduate degree in anthropology from UCSC. Presently, he is pursing post baccalaureate studies in medicine. He was 13 when he first started to sing with the choir at St. Bede’s in Hayward. He believes that music evokes feelings that words cannot express. It’s transformative in the way it brings people of all walks of life together. If done well, sacred music is meant to draw of us nearer to Christ and bring us to the table to share in the Lord’s banquet.

Percival writes, “A colleague in music ministry once said, “‘God has inspired musicians of both the past and present.’” I am a firm believer of this and that there is a place for all types of Liturgical music, from Gregorian chant to contemporary Church songs of today. The music chosen for each Liturgy must always be chosen with care, considering the text and melodies, readings of the day, themes of the season, to the needs of each Parish community. If prepared well, with a delicate balance, all types of Liturgical music may interweave in Liturgy.”

Additionally, ““Music ministry is a hospitality ministry”” as Janèt Sullivan Whitaker, a well-known pastoral musician, once said. This is something I strive to bring in music. People of all walks of life come into our Church every week to gather and celebrate the Eucharist. Therefore, the delicate balance of repertoire is essential, as the music can be accessible to all gathered, bothwelcoming and drawing our community to prayer.”

We are delighted to have him as director. Please help me welcome Percival to our parish with every courtesy of hospitality we can offer.

Readings for the Week

Sunday liturgy is the most important part of our week as Catholics. It is a time to gather in community to pray together, listen to God’s word and receive nourishment from the Body and Blood of Christ. We are then called to take Christ out to others as we move through our busy week. Liturgy is the work of the people and it takes many hands to create a meaningful liturgy. If you are interested in volunteering to help plan liturgies, serve as a Lector or Eucharistic minister, help set up our environment, or become a hospitality minister at Masses please contact Terri Trotter ( t t r o t t e r @s t m a r y s l g . o r g ) for further information. As a community let us work together to create transformative and meaningful Liturgy.

RELATIONSHIP WITH GODToday’s readings invite us into prayer, into relationship with God. Because relationships feel more natural when we know one another well, Sirach encourages us to know God better. In his wisdom, Sirach tells us what God is like: fair, open-minded, compassionate, and attentive. The Lord will not delay, he says. Knowing that God’s help comes right on time, whenever we need it, calms our hearts and helps us trust the Lord. In his second Letter to Timothy, Saint Paul demonstrates his own trust in God. Despite the grueling struggles Saint Paul has faced because of his Christian faith, he praises the Lord for rescuing him time and again. Today’s Gospel draws us close to Jesus too, revealing his special love for the poor and humble. As Jesus tells his parable about the prayer habits of a Pharisee and a tax collector, our hearts long to become as gentle as Christ’s.

Youth Ministry Faith FormationEnrollment is now open for high school youth group, Element 4:12, Confirmation Year One and middle school youth group, EDGE.

Our main goal in youth ministry is to provide a safe space for teens to strengthen their faith live, talk about relevant issues, educate them about the Bible and Church teachings as well as prepare them for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Element 4:12/Confirmation Year One is open to freshman-seniors in high school. We meet most Sundays from 6pm-7:30pm in the Annex, which is located next to the BBQ on the blacktop. EDGE is open to 6th-8th graders. Our meetings most Mondays from 7pm-8:30pm in the Annex as well. Please visit our website to see our full calendars: https://stmaryslg.org/faith-formation We are also excited to introduce a two-year Confirmation program starting August 2019. A candidate for Confirmation must spend Confirmation Year One in Element 4:12. The earliest age for receiving the Sacrament will be 10th grade. We believe this is a great layout for Confirmation because it allows the candidates to devote one year to developing a strong faith foundation before moving onto formal Confirmation education in Year Two.

Please contact our Youth Ministry Coordinator, Katie Sullivan, via [email protected] or 408-354-3944 ext. 129, with any questions.

November 7th

St. Mary School’s First Pep Rally (the first of three during the school year) took place on Friday, October 18th, with something new this year – a service opportunity! Acts of Kindness, a fun way for all ages to participate in a service project while enjoying a night out together as a school community. The Pep Rallies are a wonderful way for families to spend time getting to know each better, share a meal, and now – give back to the greater community. The school partnered with the Parish to determine a need and quickly discovered there was a desire to decorate the nearly 100 brown lunch bags that are delivered to the ConXion Dayworker Center for men and women who go out looking for jobs. You can learn more about this organization online at http://conxion.org The parents and students can’t wait for the next Pep Rally and Community Service Project in January!

There is More Happiness in Giving than in Receiving

“Serve-A-Hot-Meal” Planning a holiday party for residents who live at one of eight affordable housing sites where Catholic Charities offers supportive services is a great way to involve children in the spirit of giving. This is a good activity for 2-3 families to do together. Volunteers provide a home cooked or purchased meal for 50-100 residents and bring food to the affordable housing site ready to serve. For many residents, this dinner may be the only holiday meal and party they receive. This kind of event has become a family tradition for many of our loyal donors.

Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County - House Sharing ProgramThe House Sharing Program is a free matching services that helps match people looking for a room to rent, with someone who has an extra room in their home. The program is designed to expand affordable housing options for Santa Clara County residents through the use of underutilized homes and stability for community members. It is a County funded program, operated by Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County. In a nutshell, Catholic Charities does extensive interviews, background checks, home visits, reference checks, etc., and then matches a person who is willing to rent a room in their home with someone needing housing.
