Welcome to our first home fixture of 2015. We’re looking forward to a fantastic season with the All Golds and hope you can join us for what will be an exciting journey full of excellent rugby and great entertainment.
We’ve made some great strides forward in the past few months and are delighted to share some improvements with you today. Our new Head Coach, Lee Greenwood, has made an excellent impression and has a young and hungry team who are looking to take our game to the next level. Please get behind Lee and I’m sure he will deliver a team that will make us proud.
We hope you enjoy the improved surroundings at the Prince of Wales Stadium. The stadium is now managed by the newly formed Cheltenham Leisure and Cultural Trust, and they have already invested significantly in the grandstand and bar areas. You’ll notice our new club shop too – and
we hope the environment is much more positive for you on a matchday. Thank you to Stephen Petherick and his colleagues at the Trust for all of their efforts, enthusiasm and the can-do attitude which we are sure will make our partnership a huge success. We are
very pleased to welcome members of the Board of the Trust to the match today and we hope they enjoy their first All Golds experience.
We are of course also delighted to welcome the players, staff, supporters and directors of Skirlaugh for this third round Ladbrokes Challenge Cup game. We’ve faced our visitors in the Cup before, and we’re looking forward to another keenly fought and competitive match. We
hope they enjoy their visit to the Cotswolds.
Finally, a warm welcome to staff from Challenge Cup sponsors Ladbrokes. We were delighted to discover that our game today is their Match of the Day and we’d like to thank them for their generous support of the competition and for taking the time to visit us today. We hope you all enjoy a great time at the Prince of Wales today and stop around for that other big sporting festival later in the week. #COYAG

First of all I’d like to welcome everyone here for today’s Challenge Cup game especially our visitors, Skirlaugh. Personally I have come up against Skirlaugh plenty of times as coach at Siddal ARLFC. They are a great club and always play the game in the right way. They are usually well coached and include a lot of young, talented players in their squad. They had a difficult year in 2014 but will want to gain promotion back to the NCL Premier Division at the first attempt. Knowing how amateur teams go into these games, they will fancy their chances of causing an upset. For us, this is our first competitive home game of the season. We want to be make the Prince of Wales Stadium a difficult place to come for opposing teams
and that starts today. We ran Barrow close last week in the League 1 Cup and I was pleased with the overall performance. We
didn’t win the game though and it’s important we build
a winning mentality at this club if we want to progress. We will need to prepare and play just as well as we did last week if we want to be in the hat for the next round. We picked up a couple of knocks at Barrow but I expect everyone to be available today. It is slightly harder to get into the 17 at the moment than it has been previously at this club. Players need to work hard to stay in or get in the matchday squad and that’s how it should be. Enjoy the game, Lee GreenwoodCoach University of Gloucestershire All Golds

Skirlaugh ARLFC arrive here in Cheltenham today for the second meeting in two years intoday’s Ladbrokes Challenge Cup with The University of Gloucestershire All Golds, and asmembers of The Kingstone Press National Conference League, Division One.
Last season Skirlaugh suffered a first ever relegation in what has been a glorious thirty five year history.
The club takes its name from the village of the same name where it all began in 1980, which nestles in the Holderness Plain between the city of Kingston upon Hull and the east coast.
After a period of outstanding and sustained successes the club gained entry to the elite National Conference League in 1996, which also saw a relocation to today’s present headquarters at
The Eastside Community Sports Trust at Saltend on the eastern boundary of Hull.
The club also runs a Reserve Grade side in the Yorkshire Men’s Forty / 20 League Premier Divison as well as a thriving youth section The Skirlaugh Bulls, who will be the forefront of the club in the years ahead and at present boast nearly 300 youngsters. They currently run sides from Under 6s The Skirlaugh Shrimps to Under 17s.
All this comes at a great cost and the club greatly appreciate and are indebted to the valued sponsorship of Broady Valves through former player Rob Moulds, whilst another player from the same era Lee Newton’s Summerbridge Doors sponsor the club’s apparel.
The club as well as great many numbers in the amateur game under went a radical change three seasons ago when embracing Summer Rugby, which at the time was a profound move, and one today that is taken for granted.

After the disappointment of relegation, Skirlaugh are in a re-building period under Head Coach Colin Brown, as he looks to return the club to the Premier Division at the first attempt, with his assistants former players Sean Wildbore & Kirk Abel. In the ranks which with youth to the fore are many internationals and a trio of Under 17 players who could be the cornerstone of the club’s future are Steve Clark, Bradley Gott & Will Johnson who will be touring to Valencia with the BARLA / GB Under 17 side, whilst at Under 19 level Kieren Jones will be touring Canada, and at open age level loyal club servant Marc Smith is bound for South Africa. Jed Carter will also be representing the club for the RFL Community Lions also touring South Africa, a tour which hooker Tommy Harrison made last November at opan age level. Matty Sheard and Alex Foster will vist the Ukraine for a short tour with The Yorkshire Men’s League representative side.
To reach this stage Skirlaugh have overcome Aberdeen Warriors (27-20) & The Royal Navy (34-14), both at home and
it is ironic that the latter was overcome two years ago to set the original meeting of today’s two clubs up.
BEHIND THE SCENES
HEAD COACH - Colin Brown:Colin is now in his second spell at the club as Head Coach, and as a player he had a glittering career not only with the Skirlaugh club, but also had spells in the professional ranks with firstly Rochdale Hornets, Hull Kingston Rovers and then York.
He is a highly regarded coach and this last winter toured South Africa with The RFL Community Lions as assistant coach to Ian
Rooney of Wath Brow Hornets, the same tour as hooker Tommy Harrison undertook.
Colin was for Skirlaugh a terrific goal kicking scrum half took back to back Man of the Match awards in the BARLA National Cup successes of 1999 & 2000, and was also in the latter year The National Conference League Player of the Season. On the coaching front he took Skirlaugh to their greatest achievement the National Conference League title in 2007, and in that same year the club were claimed European Champions with a victory over Bias in Villeneuve, under his leadership. ASSISTANT COACHES - Sean Wildbore: Sean retired at the end of last season and holds the record number of apperances by a Skirlaugh player and for most of that time was not only captain of the side but an inspirational one setting the example to follow from second row, something that he will take into coaching. Sean was not only captain of Skirlaugh but also of the Great Britain Community Lions side, and he is one of very few people in rugby

league who can say he returned unbeaten from a tour of Australia.
Kirk Abel: Another former player who starred in the second row or at centre and a loyal servant over a number of years, and when retiring he took coaching up in the youth set up and has graduated to open age, and is a highly rated coach who has a tremendous future in front of him. CHAIRMAN - Peter McWatt: The only member of the club surviving from the formation in 1980, who has served the club firstly as a coach for twenty years, before becomg Vice Chairman
and Chairman for these last ten years. A hard working official and resident of the Skirlaugh village who really has dedicated his life to the club. PRESIDENT - Andrew Dickinson: Came into the position three years ago and is certainly a hands on President, who works hard behind the scenes, along with
VICE CHAIRMAN - Steve Kennedy, who is also Manager of The Skirlaugh Bulls side in the Yorkshire Men’s League. COMMITTEE:Two new members join the Committee over a year ago, and are dedicated hard workers firstly former player Simon Kilby a GB Students tourist who also had a glittering career with

the club, and has taken the post of Commercial / General Manager. In his short time he has massively overhauled the club’s sportswear from strips to tracksuits to leisure clothing, and organised various events for former player and sponsor Lee Newton of Summerbridge Doors who has been struck down by that most terrible of illnesses Motor Neurone’s Disease, in aid of the charity to help people in this postion “L6ve Life” ( Which can be sourced on the internet) Likewise Jo Langford a Commercial Manger with NatWest has come on board as Treasurer and has been outstanding in her short time at the club with her dedicated and outstanding hard work, combined with new ideas.
Other members of the Committee include Paul Harrison (Web Master), Dennis Brewster (Physio/ Benevolent Fund Manager) along with Keith Duckles, Heather Neal, Andy Spencer & Dave Thompson.
P12 THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE ALL GOLDS
There were plenty of new faces joining the All Golds in the off season but none more important than Lee Greenwood who was appointed head coach. Greenwood enjoyed a hugely successful playing career the highlight coming when he received
International recognition, playing twice for England.
The Golden Fern narrowly missed out on the league play-offs last season and were keen to recruit the type of player who could help push the club forward in 2015. In came Australian duo Toby Topham and Ryan Pywell. Joel Thomas, a graduate from the Catalan Dragons academy, was signed along with former Bradford Bulls youngster Brad Adams. Yannic Parker, Bradley Mais, Ian Clark, Courtney Davies, Ollie Purslow, Tim

P13twitter: @AllGolds | facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby
Stevenson, Callum Mulkeen, Daniel Spencer-Tonks, Joe Martin, Emmerson Whittel and Brett Scriven were also notable recruits to the squad.
Greenwood’s first game in charge was a clash on home soil against the Hemel Stags. He fielded a mixed squad of first teamers, University students and trialists, keen to give every player a chance to impress. A strong Hemel side ran out 38-18 winners but there was plenty of positives from the All Golds. Ryan Pywell scored a try on debut and another new signing Joel Thomas got his first run out for the Golden Fern and was impressive in his second half cameo. Matt Bradley, a consistent threat in attack, was as accurate as ever with his goal kicking.
A trip up North to Keighley was next on the pre-season agenda. Ollie Purslow got the All Golds off to a perfect start with an early
try. That seemed to rile the home side who dominated the next 50 minutes, running in 6 converted
tries. But back came the All Golds who ended the game much the better side. Second half tries from Emmerson Whittel (2), Callum Mulkeen and
Joe McClean bought the Fern to within 8 points of the Cougars but time was against them and the game ended in a 36-28 defeat. At one point the Golden Fern were trailing by 30 points, to end the game only 8 points down showed real character.
The final game of the pre-season saw the All Golds welcome the Coventry Bears to the Prince of Wales stadium. The game got underway in a downpour and conditions did not improve for the next two hours. Just like at Keighley, the All Golds got off to a dream start, Ollie Purslow again scoring an early try. Handling errors from both sides resulted in plenty of squandered possession but the brutal winter conditions made it impossible for a high class game of rugby. Coventry scored two tries and managed to hold onto their lead, running out 8-4 winners.
Head coach Lee Greenwood was keen to stress he was using pre-season as an opportunity to study his new squad. “I don’t care too much about results in friendlies, there’s a lot of new players in our squad and I want to give them a chance to show me what they can do.”
The friendly clashes are now over. Competitive action is underway.

In any other walk of life, an ornament as old, as beautiful and spectacular as the Challenge Cup would have been kept in a museum behind thick glass and quite possibly an armed guard.
But this is sport, and trophies are there for lifting above your head, passing from hand to hand and for parading before your fans.
Year after year the Rugby League Challenge Cup takes a battering from those lucky enough to get their hands on it, and yet every August it still comes back looking as good as new.
That’s thanks to The Birmingham based trophy maker Thomas Fattorini Ltd, who clean and repair the trophy every year before it is presented.
“The trophy is sterling silver, so it tarnishes naturally,” explains the company’s Managing Director, Tom Fattorini. “We have to repolish it, and knock out the dints and dents and scratches which it picks up.”
The trophy recently paid one of its regular visits to Fattorinis to ensure it is in perfect condition for the presentation this afternoon.
“It’s all done by hand,” says Tom. “The little dents are knocked out and repolished, the scratches and tarnishes
are removed, using lots of different methods, from small felt bobs to more complex methods, it’s a real project.”
But then the winning teams do have a habit of being a bit clumsy with the cup. It’s amazing how often they damage this most precious of prizes.
“A lot of the work we do involves getting rid of the problems caused by people dropping it and messing about with it in the dressing room and on the team bus. In the past people have got carried away, they’ve worn it on heads, thrown it around the team bus, put champagne in it - which is acidic, of course, so it isn’t exactly good for it - and
THEHISTORYOF THE CHALLENGE CUP
P17twitter: @AllGolds | facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby
nobody can stop them because they’ve won the thing, after all!”
Thankfully Fattorini’s have seen it all over the 182 years they’ve been in business.
“With some trophies we’ve had handles coming off, and it’s even survived being thrown off a team bus before. It’s luck of the draw if that happens - if it lands on the right place it may end up with very little damage, and the surface won’t buckle. It’s like a car - sometimes you’ll get a dent from the slightest touch, and other times you bump it pretty hard and you can’t even tell.”
Tom Fattorini is part of the sixth generation of the same Fattorini family who made the original Challenge Cup in 1897, for the princely sum of £60 (equivalent to around £16,000 at today’s prices).
“Fattorini’s weren’t given any particular commission, just told to come up with
something prestigious,” says Tony Collins, professor of social history of sport at De Montfort University. They did a magnificent job, though, and the original Rugby League Challenge Cup lasted 104 years before in 2001 it was finally deemed too fragile to continue being presented.
It had lost its fluted top and the players on each handle had been damaged. The silver was also wearing thin and there was little space left for new winners’ names to be engraved on it. It is now kept in a safe at the RFL’s headquarters at Red Hall, Leeds, and the
trophy used is an exact reproduction, made with a strengthened neck, and the winners’ name shields have been resized so the 111 winners (to date) can all fit on it!
There are also now a few rules in place which help to preserve the new trophy. If taken out of a secure cabinet, it always has to be in the presence of someone. Indeed, someone has to sleep in the same room if it’s out overnight. And if it goes on a car journey, there have to be two people in the car so it’s never left unattended.
When the trophy travelled to France for some Catalans publicity photos in 2007, it even had its own seat on the plane. So the days of throwing it out of team coaches are thankfully long gone. But whatever happens to one of British sport’s most famous trophies, it’ll still be back at Fattorini’s next year for some more tender loving care.
“THE ORIGINAL CHALLENGE CUP
WAS MADE IN 1897 FOR THE
PRINCELY SUM OF £60”
P18 THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE ALL GOLDS
On behalf of myself and the rest of the team I would like to give a massive welcome to everyone involved at Skirlaugh ARLFC
and to our own supporters for our first competitive home game of the season at the Prince Of Wales Stadium
in what should be a fantastic Ladbrokes Challenge Cup tie. Hopefully the weather conditions will be a lot better than our last two games/mud baths to make for an exciting and entertaining game for all involved.
After a disappointing two point loss to Barrow Raiders last week we are looking to bounce back with a big performance against a good Skirlaugh team that shouldn’t be underestimated. We reviewed our loss last week and even though people from outside the team might have seen the
THECAPTAIN’SLOG
P19twitter: @AllGolds | facebook.com/AllGoldsRugby
result as a good one for us we were disappointed as we felt we had a chance to pull off a huge upset but just fell short. As players we always want to win and the loss hurt but the improvement we have made from the pre-season training and friendlies was evident which is very encouraging as we approach the start of the league.
Pre-season this year has been vital for us with new faces on and off the pitch. With a new head coach in Lee Greenwood and a few new and returning players to the squad we have got an exciting young squad that’s full of potential and a coaching staff that will get the best out of us. It’s been a tough start with a lot of hard work in training for us all to get on the same page with the technical side of things
and to be up to standard physically. The tough friendlies have helped us hugely and we look and feel
like we are getting better each week and are on track to be hitting full stride for the start of the league.
It’s always been a tough league and figures to be even tougher this season with so many teams coming
down from the league above. As a team we know we will have to be at our best week in week out if we stand any chance at being in and around the play-offs come the end of the season and going forward that’s what we all want and are hungry for success. With the young team and quality coaches we have the All Golds have a very exciting future ahead and I know we all look forward to the challenges in front of us.

“WITH THE YOUNG TEAM AND QUALITY COACHES WE HAVE, THE ALL GOLDS HAVE A VERY EXCITING
FUTURE AHEAD”
P20 THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE ALL GOLDS
A near flawless first half performance from the All Golds was not enough to claim the victory as the Barrow Raiders fought back to progress to the next round.
The players ran out to blue skies but as soon as the
game got underway the heavens opened and heavy rain and snow pounded the surface. Handling was going to be tough especially with the temperature hovering just above freezing.
The Golden Fern have made a habit of getting off to a fast start in recent weeks and this game was no different. The clock had reached 5 minutes when some quick ball through the centre saw full back Joe Martin side-step the last Barrow defender and score the opening try of the game. Matt Bradley’s left foot, reliable as ever, added
the extra 2 points and the Golden Fern were up and running.
It didn’t take the hosts long to respond and they scored their opening try of the game on 13 minutes. After some sustained attack, deep in the All Golds half, Chris Hankinson found himself one on one and he managed to crash through the last line of defence and touch down. Josh Ward’s conversion attempt was sliced wildly, meaning the visitors had a 2 point advantage.
Almost immediately from the re-start, the All Golds

won the ball back and drove forwards deep into the Barrow half. On the 5th tackle a perfectly placed grubber kick bounced straight into an on-rushing Callum Mulkeen who grabbed the ball and slammed it down into the mud for the All Golds second try of the game. Matt Bradley’s well struck conversion attempt drifted just wide of the far post.
Things got even better for the All Golds when, on 23 minutes, the influential half back Matt Bradley sold his marker a dummy and ran 20 yards into the Barrow half.
His offload to Ash Haynes was perfectly timed and the move was carried on expertly by Haynes who drew the fullback to send Cowburn free from the last defender. He sprinted down the wing and scored the third try of a productive opening half. From a tight angle, Matt Bradley was unable to add the extra 2 points but the visitors enjoyed a 10 point lead and the home crowd were silenced. That’s how it stayed when the half time hooter sounded. A great first half from the All Golds.
Four minutes into the second half a massive kick caught the All Golds defence out. Full back Joe Martin was engaged in a 40 metre race with the Barrow attacker. Martin knew he had to win it otherwise the Barrow attacker was certain to score. He cut through the mud and managed to grab the ball a split second before the Barrow attacker, a heroic effort.
The pitch was now cutting up badly, with heavy snow now making visibility difficult. The next score was going to prove crucial and it was Barrow that got it when Liam Campbell found himself in space and touched down. Ward made no mistake this time and the score was 10-14 with 30 minutes left.
A minute into the last quarter saw the decisive score of the game. The much improved Barrow side were asking serious questions of the All Golds who were standing firm. But eventually the Raiders persistence told and Anthony Bate beat two defenders and just managed to keep hold of the ball before touching down. Scores were level with the crucial kick to come. The responsibility fell to Chris Fleming and he confidently slotted home the attempt which took Barrow into a 2 point lead.
The last quarter saw the All Golds throw everything at the Barrow Raiders but it was not to be. Both teams fought through the treacherous conditions and took part in a high class game with very few errors.
