In 1898 the United States went to war againstSpain then a rival for world power followingthe sinking of the US Battleship Maine inHavana harbor Much of the war took place inCuba Puerto Rico and the Philippines Spanishcolonies that were already struggling for inde-pendence As hard as it may be to believewhen the Spanish American War began theUS Army was still severely undermannedfrom the horrific losses of the Civil War thathad ended three decades earlier As a resultPresident William McKinley called forvolunteers to assist in the war effort againstthe Spanish Among those responding to thechallenge Teddy Roosevelt and his FirstUnited States Volunteer Cavalry Regiment
Roosevelt who was Assistant Secretary of theNavy in the McKinley Administration was aleading advocate for the liberation of Cuba Inpartnership with Army Doctor and decoratedwar hero Leonard Wood he recruited menfrom all over the country They were a variedmix of Western cowboys and Indians andEastern athletes and elites The only com-monality they could all ride and shoot andwere in good physical condition
With a very short training period the RoughRiders as they came to be known landed atDaiquiri Cuba and just days later enteredthe Battle of Las Guasimas As part of a largeforce assembled to assault on the Spanishfortifications protecting the city of SantiagoRoosevelt on horseback led the Rough Ridersand elements of the Ninth and Tenth Regimentsof regulars African-American buffalo soldiersand other units up Kettle Hill After that hillwas captured Roosevelt now on foot led asecond charge up the San Juan Heights Hewas to forever call this his ldquocrowded momentrdquoby which he meant his greatest moment
After the capture of San Juan heights over-looking Santiago the city surrendered andthe war in Cuba was virtually over The tollfrom tropical diseases soon became worse thanthe losses in battle and Roosevelt and otherofficers called for the American troops to bebrought home quickly in order to save livesThe Rough Riders themselves were shippedto Montauk at the far eastern end of LongIsland There thanks to Rooseveltrsquos fameflamboyance and public relations instinctsthe regiment became a favorite of the powerfulnewspapers of the era and were highlightedfor their bravery and daring It came with aprice though an estimated one-third of thosewho went to Cuba were killed wounded orgot a tropical disease The celebrated regimentwas mustered out after just 137 days of servicein the Army and Rooseveltrsquos fame helped himbecome McKinleyrsquos Vice President and uponMcKinleyrsquos death the President himself

And he was a showman Rockne spent muchof his time promoting Notre Dame footballusing his charm on the media of the time to
make the program a household name Hepushed the team to travel nationally to gainexposure and win fans When the Irish playedArmy in 1921 a crowd of 20000 watched aWest Point record Soon Rockne sought largersites for the Army game with the teams meet-ing at Ebbets Field the Polo Grounds andYankee Stadium Notre Dames own field heldjust 3000 but by 1930 Rocknes last seasonthe school had a stadium seating 54000
At the height of his fame Rockne died in aplane crash in Kansas on his way to publicizea film about the college He was 43 PresidentHerbert Hoover called Rocknes death ldquoanational lossrdquo and it has been likened to theimpact that John Kennedyrsquos death had for alater generation Actor Pat OrsquoBrien playedRockne in the 1940 film Knute Rockne AllAmerican while Ronald Reagan played GeorgeGipp The film has kept the legend alive Therehave been many memorials including a 1998postage stamp in his honor at which then-President Reagan gave a speech Rockne isalso enshrined in the College Football Hall ofFame as a charter member Meanwhile thegreat expectations that Rockne created continueto be both a blessing and a curse for futureteams and coaches

On one level the US government is respondingon behalf of all of us President Obama hasjumped to action instructing his nationalsecurity staff to develop an aggressivecoordinated US response to the tragedyAs articulated by Secretary of State ClintonldquoThe United States is offering our full assistanceto Haiti and to others in the region We will beproviding both civilian and military disasterrelief and humanitarian assistance And ourprayers are with the people who have sufferedtheir families and their loved onesrdquo More than3000 US troops and several ships havebeen dispatched to provide security as well asmedical and humanitarian aid In addition theEmbassy in Port-au-Prince is working to contactAmerican citizens through their warden networkCommunications are very difficult within Haitiat this time For those Americans seeking infor-
mation about loved ones in Haiti the StateDepartment Operations Center has set up aphone number (1-888-407-4747) and an emailaddress (Haiti-Earthquakestategovcom)
On a more personal level the most importantcontribution the average American can make isa financial donation Money is better than goodsat this point since there is no guarantee yet thatdonated goods mdash such as food and clothing mdashcan or will reach the intended victims As theCenter For International Disaster Informationpoints out ldquofinancial contributions allow pro-fessional relief organizations to purchase exactlywhat is most urgently needed Cash contribu-tions to established legitimate relief agenciesare always considerably more beneficial thanthe donation of commoditiesrdquo

AMERICAN PATRIOT 9
