AboutPolicyRates

1. Basispoints:Itistheincreaseininterestratesinpercentageterms.Forinstance,iftheinterestrateincreasesby50basispoints(bsp), thenitmeansthatinterestratehasbeenincreaseby50%.Onepercentagepointisbrokendowninto100basispoints.Therefore,anincreasefrom2%to3%isanincreaseofonepercentagepointor100basispoints.

2. CRR:CashreserveRatio(CRR)istheamountoffundsthatthebankshavetokeepwithRBI.IfRBIdecidestoincreasethepercentofthis,theavailableamountwiththebankscomesdown.RBIisusingthismethod(increaseofCRRrate),todrainouttheexcessivemoneyfromthebanks.Thecurrentrateis4%,whichmeansforacashdepositofRs.100,thebankhastopark4rupeewiththecentralbank.

3. Reporate:ReporateisthepolicyrateandispartofRBI’sLiquidityAdjustmentFacility(LAF).ItistherateatwhichcommercialbanksborrowfromtheRBIbysellingtheirsecuritiesorfinancialassetstotheRBIforashort‐periodoftime.ItcomeswithanagreementthatthesoldsecuritieswillberepurchasedbythecommercialbanksfromtheRBIatafuturedateatpredeterminedprice.Thereporateisusedbythecentralbanktoincreaseliquidityinthesystem.

4. Reversereporate:ReverseRepoRateisalsoapartofLAF.Itistherateofinterestatwhichthecentralbankborrowsfundsfromotherbanksforashortduration.Thebanksdeposittheirshorttermexcessfundswiththecentralbankandearninterestonit.Thisrateisusedbythecentralbanktoabsorbliquidityfromtheeconomy.GenerallyitisonepercentagelessthantheReporate.

5. Bankrate:Theonlywaythebankrateisdifferentfromthereporateisthatthebankrateistherateatwhichbanksborrowmoneyfromthecentralbankwithoutanysaleofsecurities.Itisgenerallyforalongerperiodoftime

6. MarginalStandingFacility:TheReserveBankofIndiainitsmonetarypolicyfor2011‐12introducedthemarginalstandingfacilityunderwhichbankscouldborrowfundsfromRBIwhenthereisaconsiderableshortfallofliquidity.ThismeasurehasbeenintroducedbyRBItoregulateshort‐termassetliabilitymismatchesmoreeffectively.Underthisfacility,bankscanborrowupto1%oftheirnetdemand.

7. LiquidityAdjustmentFacility:Underthisfacility,banksborrowfromthecentralbankbypledginggovernmentsecurities.8. StatutoryLiquidityRatio:Thisisthepercentageofdepositsthatbanksmustmandatorilyholdintheformofgovernment

bonds.SLRbondsareliquidassetsthatcanbesoldatashortnoticetomeetanyunexpecteddemandfromdepositors.
