Framing the Session

Collecting and analyzing data is a core science skill.

We will be using Excel to create templates that structure data collection and data analysis.

Teaching

Open the lab worksheet template.

Show student work sample.

Show sample Excel template.

Demonstrate how to create the template.

Guided Practice

Sample Template

Demonstrate step by step how to enter:

Title

Labels (student, time)

- Example numbers

Create Template

Guided Practice

Step 1: Select cells.

Step 2: Insert > Chart.

Step 3: Select Chart Type – Discuss.

Step 4. Select simple chart type.

Step 5: Review “Data range.”

Step 6: Enter the Chart title (X and Y axis labels).

Step 7: Chart Location.

Create a graph

Guided Practice

Copying and pasting the Excel chart into the Word Lab Worksheet.

Sizing the Chart

Work Time

Getting Started

Complete sample lab in pairs.

Collect pulse rate over seven minutes.

Measure resting pulse for three minutes.

Run one minute and measure.

Measure resting pulse for three minutes.

Complete lab.

Work Time

Each participant must create his or her own chart.

Complete the template, if not done already.

Collect data in pairs.

Enter data.

Graph data.

Copy graph into lab.

Analyze data and write up findings.
