LinkedIn:  Why  It’s  Different

•  LinkedIn is the most professional of all social media platforms.

•  More than 300 million users in over 200 countries. •  Students and college grads are the fastest growing

demographic with more than 39 million having profiles.

•  89 of the Fortune 100 Companies use LinkedIn for talent acquisition.

•  More than 3 million companies have LinkedIn Company Pages

SeAing  Up  Your  Profile •  Your Photo

•  Professional •  What  do  hiring  managers  want  to  see?

This Not  This

Name  &  URL •  Use your real name. •  If you have a common name, try

using your middle initial. •  No “DJ Slim” – unless you’re a DJ. •  LinkedIn lets you customize your

URL. Ex: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandijordan

Let’s  Take  a  Look  at… •  A Great Summary:

o www.linkedin.com/in/racheefagg Great Experience: o www.linkedin.com/pub/ted-mead/0/66b/792 Publications & Additional Info: http://www.linkedin.com/in/marismith

Recommendations •  Great examples:

Be honest and genuine. No one has to give you a recommendation, but it’s okay to ask.

Privacy  SeAings •  Profile views

•  Updates and changes to your profile

•  Your full name

•  If your profile is public, make sure it’s what you want others to see.

Finding  a  Job  on  LinkedIn Do your research about the job.

o  Keywords o  Industry Jargon

Do your research on people in the position you want. Do your research on the company. In 2012, 93% of recruiters used LinkedIn to discover talent.

Where to Find Those Jobs

Knowing the right keywords can make the search much easier.

Careers on the Company Page

How  to  Apply •  Redirected to the company online application.

Connections  Count •  Quality over quantity. •  Connect with people

who you know. •  Don’t SPAM to get

connections. •  Let your connections

know you’re looking. •  Ask for an introduction.

Social  Media  Beyond  LinkedIn

•  Social media is not private.

•  Whatever you post online will live online forever somewhere. Plan accordingly.

•  Passionate discussions are fine, but just remember that companies will be looking when you apply.

•  73% of recruiters check your profiles – even if you don’t provide them.

Say  Cheese!

•  Cover up •  No bathroom selfies •  Social profile images

should be “job hunting safe” – no beer, no smoking, no nudity

Slang  &  Tag •  What you say stays. •  Professional profile on

all social channels. •  Careful use of hashtags

and tagging. o  Ex: Really Good Stuff

•  Always think about the company you want to work for looking at your profile. Does it match their culture?

Google  Never  Forgets

•  Think twice before you type. •  Mean comments reflect poorly on you. •  Take complaints offline or to email. •  NEVER publically badmouth your current or former

employer online.

Set  Yourself  Up  for  Success

•  Get a LinkedIn profile. •  Keep it up to date and

engaging. •  Make connections. •  Do your research about

the job you want, the people who have that job, and the company you want to work for.

•  Watch all of your social profiles.

•  Never publically badmouth your employer.

•  Go get the job you want!
