Are You Aware?
It has been our experience at times
that some people may feel they are
not able to receive Communion due
to divorce or other personal issues.
Often times, there may be a
misunderstanding regarding Church Teaching in these
matters. You are encouraged to see Fr. Gill, S. Mary Ann,
Deacons Jim, or John for clarity so that you do not miss
the opportunity to celebrate the healing presence of Jesus
in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and in turn come to the
Table of the Lord.
“When I was hungry, you gave me to eat.” ( Mt. 25)
Our pantry is in need of non-perishable items
such as: cereals, peanut butter, jelly, canned
vegetables, fruits, and soups, tuna fish,
crackers, non-refrigerated milk (ex. Parmalat), etc.
Our Parish pledged to #WalkwithFrancis—donating
to the Food Pantry is a good way to walk.

but a family member, friend or neighbor has an old or
neglected vehicle in their driveway

4th SUNDAY OF EASTER - April 17, 2016
Acts 13: 43-52; Psalm 100;
Rev. 7: 9, 14-17; John 10: 27-30
From today’s Gospel reading
Jesus said:
"My sheep hear my voice,
I know them and they know me.
I give them eternal life an they shall never perish.
Reflection:
Eternal life is the deep life that begins now for those
who hear and act on Jesus' words. It provides: solid
ground for us to stand on during life’s storms; peace
even amid great change; forgiveness each time we
ask; healing for life's wounds. We have passed from
death to life. "Eternal life" is both a gift now for be-
lievers and a promise that will not be fully realized
until the future.
So we ask ourselves:
Can I say that I experience eternal life now?
How? And what fosters and nurtures eternal life in
me?

PASCHAL CANDLE
During the Easter Season
our Paschal Candle is
placed near the ambo where the Word of God is
proclaimed. It is lit each time the people of God
gather. The Easter Candle has always had a
connection with the Easter Vigil. It is during the Vigil
that the candle was solemnly lit from the Easter fire.
The Paschal Candle has a special significance at
baptisms and at funerals because the focus of both
these events is on the new life that we share in the
Risen Christ. The Paschal Candle should be
a reminder of the promise of Jesus: "Where two or
three are gathered in my name, there I am in the midst
of them.

Thank you for your generosity to IHM!
Generations of Faith, named after the numerous
generations of Catholics raised and living in the many
tight knit neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens, will
focus on three main goals: to strengthen the parishes of
Brooklyn and Queens (50%), serve and care for senior
priests (37.5%), and foster the formation of the Catholic
faith for future generations (12.5%).
Dear Parishioner,
I first want to express my
most sincere gratitude to all
who came to the Mass and Candle Light Vigil for the
people of Pakistan last week. Your prayerful presence and
concern for those affected by the Easter Sunday bombing
meant so much to all who had gathered. Thank You!
The Immaculate Heart of Mary Family is supportive,
encouraging, and present in such a meaningful way. Next
Sunday, April 24th, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio will be
joining us for the 4:30 p.m. Mass. Due to a previous
commitment in another parish, he was unable to be with us
last week. So once again, the 4:30 p.m. Mass will be in
both English and Urdu. I invite you to join us.
Next Sunday, our parish will welcome 24 children to the
Table of the Lord at the 5:00 p.m. Mass and 11:45 a.m.
Mass. The children, both from St. Joseph the Worker
Catholic Academy and our Children’s Faith Formation
Program, have been preparing and praying as this day
draws near. I ask you to pray for them and their families
that they may always find a place at this very special Table.
And most importantly, pray that they continue to be
nourished by the Body and Blood of our Lord.
I have been meeting with our diocesan representative for
Generations of Faith. Meaghan Leonard is helping us to
organize and prepare literature that will be distributed in
the weeks ahead. Some have expressed concern that they
have not received anything regarding the Annual Catholic
Appeal. Thank you for your interest and desire to support
our parish. The usual Annual Catholic Appeal Goal has
been folded into the Generations of Faith Goal. I promise
details are coming—we are scheduled in the third phase of
the Generations of Faith Campaign along with several
other parishes. So again, please know that I am grateful
for your generosity and enthusiasm.
Finally, the days are drawing close for our Spring
Extravaganza. Do you have your ticket?

Singing Boosts the Immune
System of Cancer Patients! Are you coping with cancer, either as a
patient or a caregiver? If so, you’re
probably under a lot of emotional stress
— a state that has been shown to weaken the immune
system, which is the last thing you want. You may be
inclined to stay home and nurse your troubles in private.
But newly published research points to a far better choice:
Head out to choir practice!
Singing in a choir boosts levels of immune proteins in
people affected by cancer, reduces stress and improves
your mood, according to a new study published last week
by Tenovus Cancer Care and the Royal College of Music.
This research finds that choir rehearsals help put cancer
patients in the best possible position to receive treatment
and maintain remission.
CNN reports “Choir members gave samples of their saliva
before an hour of singing, and then again just after. The
samples were analyzed to see what changes occurred in a
number of hormones, immune proteins, neuropeptides and
receptors. Results showed that singing was associated with
significant reductions in stress hormones, such as cortisol,
and increases in quantities of cytokines - proteins of the
immune system - which boosts the body's ability to fight
serious illness.”
Obviously, more research will be needed to confirm these
early findings. However, there is no harm in singing, so
why not try it? And if you don’t believe this, ask some of
our choir members…

Baptism of Infants
(Children age 7 years and younger)
Baptism Preparation Classes for families planning to
have their child baptized at Immaculate Heart of Mary
will take place the first Wednesday of every month at
7:30 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Center. Parents must
attend; sponsors are also encouraged to join us for the class. Families must be registered for the class prior to
attending by contacting the Rectory. We will celebrate
the Sacrament of Baptism on Sunday, May 22nd and
June 12th. You must be pre-registered and attend the
Baptism Preparation Class held first Wednesday of
the month.
Baptism of Children (Children who have celebrated their
8th Birthday and older.)
Children who have celebrated their 8th birthday must
participate in a process - The Rite of Christian Initiation (R.C.I.A.) adapted for Children. This
process takes place over three to five years and includes
your child attending Faith Formation Classes and Mass regularly. This is a faith journey for both you and your child. When there is an appropriate readiness, your child is baptized, confirmed and receives Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. Your child continues regular
instruction in the Faith Formation Program for several years after their initiation. For more information contact S. Mary Ann.
Only Parents or Legal Guardians may register a child for Baptism. No date is definite until you have completed all registration forms at the Rectory.
Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
The R.C.I.A. is designed for adults who have never been baptized, perhaps been baptized in another faith, or baptized Catholic but never received Eucharist and Confirmation. This is an opportunity to
explore life in the Catholic Community, have a companion on your faith journey, prepare for the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, and/or Eucharist, and Confirmation).
What can you do to help someone who seeks to be part of the Catholic Church? Accompany them to Mass; encourage them on the journey; introduce them to other parishioners.
If you or someone you know is interested in learning
more about the RCIA call: S. Mary Ann at:
718-871-1310 x 15
Proximate Preparation
Penance, Eucharist and Confirmation
All families registered in our parish who
anticipate their children will receive Penance
& First Eucharist (Communion) in the spring
of 2016 or Confirmation in the fall of 2016 at Immaculate
Heart of Mary Church must attend our Proximate
Preparation Program. This would include children of our
parish currently registered in Saint Joseph the Worker
Catholic Academy, other Catholic or Private Schools and/
or our Children’s Faith Formation Program.
Children who worship in other parishes who will be
attending Saint Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy and
wish to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Immaculate
Heart of Mary will need a letter from their pastor granting
them permission to receive the Sacraments of Initiation at
Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
In addition, children of our parish who attend other private
or Catholic Schools are encouraged to ‘come home’ to
receive the Sacraments of Initiation at Immaculate Heart of
Mary.
Proximate Preparation is for parents and children to attend
together.
As always, it is the expectation that all are attending mass
regularly. Remember these are the Sacraments of
Initiation, initiation into the worshipping community. For
further information or clarification, please contact S. Mary
Ann. To assist us in planning, please call to register if you
are not attending our Children’s Faith Formation Program.
All Proximate Preparation Sessions take place
in the School (3002 Fort Hamilton Parkway)

For so the Lord has commanded us, "I have made you a
light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of
salvation to the ends of the earth."
Acts 13: 47
"Everything is connected. Concern for the environment
thus needs to be joined to a sincere love
for our fellow human beings and an unwavering
commitment to resolving the problems of society."-
-Pope Francis, Laudato Si’, no. 91
Earth Day is April 22
For the organization, Earth Day Network
(www.earthday.org), the mission is to build the world’s
largest environmental movement. As they state on their
webpage:
*Earth Day Network’s mission is to broaden and diversify
the environmental movement worldwide and to mobilize it
as the most effective vehicle to build a healthy, sustainable
environment, address climate change, and protect the Earth
for future generations.
*Growing out of the first Earth Day, Earth Day Network is
the world’s largest recruiter to the environmental
movement, working with more than 50,000 partners in 196
countries to build environmental democracy. We work
through a combination of education, public policy, and
consumer campaigns.
*The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, activated 20
million Americans from all walks of life and is widely
credited with launching the modern environmental
movement. The passage of the landmark Clean Air Act,
Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other
environmental laws soon followed. More than 1 billion
people now participate in Earth Day activities each year,
making it the largest civic observance in the world.
Pope Francis, in his great encyclical, Laudato Si’, makes
concern for the environment more pointed with three
simple words, EVERYTHING-IS-CONNECTED. As he
states, "We have to realize that a true ecological approach
always becomes a social approach; it must integrate
questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to
hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor" (49). .
. "When all these relationships are neglected, when justice
no longer dwells in the land, the Bible tells us that life itself
is endangered" (70).
The Earth Day Network declares, "Let’s make big stuff
happen." For actions: http://www.earthday.org/take-action/
Pope Francis declares, "We are faced not with two separate
crises, one environmental and the other social, but rather
JUSTICE NOTES—EARTH DAY—APRIL 22, 2016
with one complex crisis which is both social and
environmental. Strategies for a solution demand an
integrated approach to combating poverty, restoring dignity
to the excluded, and at the same time protecting nature
(139). . .What kind of world do we want to leave to those
who come after us, to children who are now growing
up?" (160).
God declares: I have made you a light. . .that you may be
an instrument of salvation.

to Join with St. Francis College Students & Faculty
‘Blessing of the Gowanus Canal!’
Friday, April 22nd
Meet at the Canal Street Bridge at 3:30 p.m. or
Meet at 3:00 p.m. in front of Our Lady of Peace.
The gifts of ‘Nature’ need our respect, care, and in extreme
cases, our ‘prayer!’ Perhaps no other object of nature is
more in need of our prayer at this time, then our own
Gowanus Canal! So many plans have been proposed over
the years for its cleansing and revitalization, but even
though the discussions continue, nothing seems to be
happening. Perhaps we need to offer our collective prayer
as a community, and petition God’s blessing upon the
waters of the ‘Gowanus!’
We will gather at the Canal Street Bridge for a simple ‘Rite
of Blessing’ at 3:30 pm Friday, April 22nd (those who
wish, may gather in front of the Church at 3:00 p.m. and
walk together to the Canal Street Bridge.) Following the
‘Rite of Blessing,’ we will come back to the Church
grounds for a little fraternal reception.

Rosary Society News Update!
Last Sunday the Rosary Society met.
While some members were not present
some new faces joined us. There was
small group discussion and then large
group brainstorming. Many good ideas
were shared and there was a sense of
hope and enthusiasm. Of course, it takes many people to
make any endeavor a success. Fr. Gill discussed forming a
new leadership team.
Those interested in being part of a Leadership Team are
asked to see Fr. Gill Before April 21st.
What is a Parish Rosary Society?
The Altar & Rosary Society of Immaculate Heart of Mary
is an organization of parish women with the following
purposes:
1. To unite women of all ages of the parish community in
a bond of sisterly support and concern to build up the Body
of Christ.
2. To join in prayer and devotion under the patronage of
Our Blessed Lady especially through devotion to the
Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
3. To provide an opportunity for worship, fellowship and
service within the parish and the Windsor Terrace/
Kensington area community.
In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, all are
invited to pray the Rosary each day with
the special intention for Immaculate
Heart of Mary Parish Rosary Society.

“I think this is truly the most wonderful
experience we can have: to belong to a people
walking, journeying through history together
with our Lord, who walks among us!
We are not alone; we
do not walk alone.
We are part of the
one flock of Christ
that walks together.”
Pope Francis, The Church of Mercy
