“In 2014, the Spanish Economy expe-rienced significant rates of growth in production and employment that

surpassed those of the EMU (Economic and Monetary Union) and confirmed the steady recovery begun the previous year after various years of prolonged reces-sion” The Bank of Spain heads its Annual Report for 2014 with these encouraging words that confirm the change in tenden-cy already apparent in 2013 even though there was a 1.6% decrease in the GDP for that year. Actually, in 2014 there was a 1.4% growth in the Spanish economy and fore-casts for 2015 pace it above 2%, all this be-ing due to the partial correction of certain macroeconomic imbalances, the support of foreign demand (gradually later substi-tuted by home demand) and, in the second half of the year, by the fall in the price of petrol (110 dollars a Brent barrel on the 1st July and 54 dollars on the 31st Decem-ber) and depreciation of the euro. Analyti-cal consensus assures that the tendency is positive but weak, and that factors such as the public deficit and debt growth are real threats in need of an active reform policy that without doubt affect and will continue to affect public spending.

The economy of Andalusia also grew in 2014 at the same rate of 1.4%. According to estimations by the Spanish Regional Accountancy (INE), the Gross Domestic Product reached 141,703 million euros,

13.4% of the national. Both in Spain and in Andalusia a homogeneous growth was noted in every sector of activity (an annual average of 1.5% corresponding to indus-try) and showing a growing profile as the year advanced.

On the other hand, with the available data it would seem that credit to firms and citizens shows signs of recovery and the Business sector is recovering after years of reduction and decline.

This brief and incomplete description of the background is pertinent in that smooth progress of the economy in general, of industry and firms and the evolution of public spending, have special influence on the activities and the results of the “F. de Paula Rojas” Association for Research and Industrial Cooperation of Andalusia (AI-CIA), as is emphasized each year.

This presentation is only to underline the most notable aspects of all the prolific information contained in the 2014 Annual Report; however, in order to make clear the stability of the trajectory of AICIA, it is necessary to compare data from previous years which, at the cost of slowing down the reading, definitely enriches it.

In 2014, total income rose to 13.484 mil-lion euros which represents 3.7% increase over the 13 million in 2013. From the near-est minimum of 2012 (12.039 million eu-ros) a slight recovery can be seen and the close historic series (maximum 14.67 mil-

lion in 2009, minimum 12.04 million in 2012) show evident stability around aver-age values that can be interpreted as an example of the solidity of the products, services and strategies of the Association, the work Teams and all those making the running of AICIA possible.

12.86 million euros of the total income in 2014 come from exploitation, an increase of 4.94% with respect to the previous year and 89.83% (88.92% in 2013) correspond-ing to private funds and 10.17% (11.08% in 2013) to public funds to the amount of 1,308.11 million euros. Income from public funds decreased by 3.69%. With respect to financial earnings, these came to 262,043 euros compared to 353,170 euros in 2013, representing slightly less than 2% of the total income and their decrease is coher-ent with the generalized drop in profitabil-ity of financial investments.

In 2014, 124 works were carried out (149 in 2013, 137 in 2012), of these 63 were Engineering works (representing 72.7% of income), 9 were “International Projects”, 36 were “Studies and Con-sultancies”, 13 “Tests, Analyses and Re-ports” and 2 were financed by Business Chairs through courses and workshops. This year, the greatest amount of projects corresponds to the “Transport and Infra-structure” sector, followed by “ICT” and “Energy”, this latter being the greatest in terms of billing.

Page 5: annual report - AICIAaicia.es/annuals/AR-AICIA-2014.pdf · the rest of Europe, 1 in South America and 2 in the Arab Emirates. In accordance with its focus on training and research,

As in previous years, the seven most prominent private clients make up more than a third of the obtained earnings and the European Union remains as the third most important AICIA client. These first twelve clients account for 50% of invoicing and 38 clients cover 80% of it. Due to vari-ous circumstances, not unconnected to entrepreneurial restructuration, some cli-ents disappear and others take their place as chief clients, such as Cementos Port-land, Iturri, Fluid Mecánica or Endesa Ing-eniería. In the ranking of clients accord-ing to billing, the Regional Government of Andalusia enters in fifth place and the Spanish Government falls from thirteenth to thirty-fourth place (it was the chief cli-ent in 2010). A cause for satisfaction is that four of the “spin off” firms from AICIA and the Seville Engineering School (Inerco, Greenpower, Teams and Isotrol) are now amongst the most prominent clients.

With reference to the geographic distri-bution of clients with a billing of more than 3,000 euros, 96 are in Andalusia, 30 in Ma-drid, 24 throughout the rest of Spain, 5 in the rest of Europe, 1 in South America and 2 in the Arab Emirates.

In accordance with its focus on training and research, the “F. de Paula Rojas” As-sociation for Research and Industrial Co-operation of Andalusia (AICIA) integrated within the Engineering School has contin-ued its policy of grants. In 2014 the amount

allotted to grants has risen to rather more than one million euros, the average amount per grant being 3,021 euros for 358 grant holders (384 in 2013). 41 grant holders (9 less than 2013) have also enjoyed research grants for graduates that are, furthermore, ratified by Seville University.

In 2014, the Work Teams have relied on the participation of 183 teachers, 120 tech-nicians, 17 administrative staff and 152 Labor Technicians, amongst which are in-cluded the personnel of AICIA itself. The human resources involved reach a total of 830 people. Administration costs of the en-tire structure and activity represent 2.53% of the operating income (2.63% in 2013, 4.29% in 2012), without entering here those costs associated to the Agreement between AICIA and Seville University which are worth commenting on separately.

The value of inventory material trans-ferred to the University has reached a con-siderable amount; 193,393 euros in 2014 and an accumulated amount of 9.436 mil-lion euros. As a result of the Agreement signed with the University, Monetary transfer has been 733,958 euros (631,915 euros in 2013) with a total accumulated amount of 16.990 million euros.

The previous data yearly certifies the positive effect the main activity of AICIA has on financing, training activity, and equipment of Seville University. Here, the only aim is to underline the most important

features that are separated and completed in the Report. Nowadays, when the quali-ties of trustworthiness and transparency are demanded and enhanced, it should be proudly remembered that these qualities have been practiced from the start.

As is perceptive, in the Annual Accounts and in the Report for 2014, the monetary translation of the activities described are included. As well as reflecting a true pic-ture of the economic and financial situa-tion of AICIA at the end of the year, it gives an idea of the work of management and ad-ministration called for by the institution. A valid index is the number of bills processed in 2014, which was 1,335 (1,322 in 2013) and the 21,240 accounting annotations (20,389 in 2013).

As demanded, the accounts have been formulated according to the General Ac-countancy Plan of 1st January 2008 and they have been duly audited, meriting an unreserved judgement. Even though the following pages contain abundant and de-tailed information about the economic and financial situation of AICIA, I would like to briefly emphasise certain aspects.

As previously stated, in 2014 total in-come came to 13.484 million euros and those from exploitation to 12.864 million euros.

Exploitation costs reached 13.394 mil-lion euros in 2014, an increase of 3.30% with respect to 2013 (7.59% raise in 2013

with respect to 2012). Regarding its struc-ture, 52.54% corresponds to costs of per-sonnel that were 7,036,814 euros with a 3.55% increase due to the increase in num-ber of teachers, several staff and techni-cians working in AICIA.

The previous data, both of income and costs, are coherent with the evolution of AICIA activities, and do not show any no-table discontinuity from previous years.

Total receipts of AICIA Administra-tion were 1,600,742 (1,476,872 euros in 2013) and expenses were 1,511,529 euros (1,444,274 euros in 2013), the latter includ-ing amounts transferred to the University and Engineering School in consequence of the existing agreement. After deduct-ing these transfers, costs are reduced to 326,233 euros, which entails 2.53% of op-erating income (2.63% in 2013).

As is indicated in Note 4.3 of the presen-tation of the Annual Accounts of the Re-port, the percentage to cover general and administrative costs of the Association was “approximately 3.8% in the 2014 fiscal year and 4% in 2013”. Said percentage is regis-tered at the time payment is made. Thus, the Association has not registered income for amounts billed but unpaid on the 31st December 2014 that comes to 310,573 eu-ros (359,347 on 31st December 2013).

Trading results after tax reach 66,178 euros that are incorporated into AICIA eq-uity (24,794 euros in 2013, -14, 393 euros in

2012, 47,381 euros in 2011, 10,692 euros in 2010).

The state of cash flows reflects an end of year balance of 1,338,533 euros (352,727 euros in 2013, 377,337 euros in 2012, 755,512 euros in 2011, 950,291 euros in 2010, 3,015,880 in 2009) which is also reflected in the Balance and guarantees a more than adequate liquidity for the run-ning expenses of AICIA. In the Balance Sheet of 31st December 2014, it can be seen that short term financial investments come to 11.191 million euros compared to 15.468 million in 2013 (13.588 in 2012, 14.737 in 2011, 12.325 in 2010 and 9.661 million euros in 2009), to which 1,388,533 euros in “Cash and other equivalent liq-uid assets” must be added. Treasury stock, and above all short term Financial Invest-ments in non-risk assets, constitute a solid frontline of liquidity for AICIA and a guar-antee of payment of the current creditors.

As is usual, corresponding to the type of activity of the Association, the predomi-nance of liabilities and floating assets over the respective totals stand out in the Bal-ance; a significant variation of the non-current assets having been produced due, in part, to the conversion of short term financial investments to long term invest-ments. All of this is explained in detail in Note 7 of the Report Accounts. In li-abilities, the account of Various Creditors (Departments) appears with a balance of

16,821,621 euros, an increase in respect to the 13,896,321 euros of 2013 (12,405,003 euros in 2012, 14,427,880 euros in 2011, 12,172,664 euros in 2010). Total assets come to 27,740,967 euros (25,450,859 eu-ros in 2013, 22,668,373 euros in 2012).

In 2014, Net Worth comes to 621,233 eu-ros (555,055 euros in 2013, 530,261 euros in 2012, 544,654 in 2011). The Statement of Changes in the Net Worth reflects this final balance with an increase of 66,178 eu-ros over the final balance of 2013.

At the time of writing, economic fore-casts are optimistic whilst making clear that there are external and internal risks and that recovery will be sure but slow. In the last quarters, the forecasts have been improving and at present, a growth of around 3% is predicted in the GDP, al-though its effect on the creation of employ-ment is questionable. The entrepreneurial environment has improved, credit is re-turning slowly to firms, salary costs are contained, and regarding the demand of AICIA, adjustment could come from the reduction in public spending in that which concerns investments in research and de-velopment. At this point in 2015, all would seem to indicate that the activity of the Association will be maintained at the lev-els of previous years or will improve on them. We are hopeful that this will be so. We rely on the improvement in the general background and on the abilities of AICIA.

SINCE 1982, AICIA HAS DEDICATED ALL ITS EFFORTS TO BRINGING TOGETHER UNIVERSITY AND BUSINESS AND TO SOCIETY IN GENERAL, MAINTAINING AN INDUSTRIAL PERSPECTIVE

4 | Annual report 2014

Page 7: annual report - AICIAaicia.es/annuals/AR-AICIA-2014.pdf · the rest of Europe, 1 in South America and 2 in the Arab Emirates. In accordance with its focus on training and research,

This is empirically reflected in the results achieved half way through the year.

The presence of AICIA at an institu-tional and social level has been intense in 2014, maintaining that of previous years, although always related to bodies and institutions connected to its research character and social objective. It should be remembered that it continues to take part in the main technological platforms at a national and European level, as well as being a member, patron or associate in such bodies as EARTO, FEDIT (member of the Board of Governors), Cartuja 93 Cir-cle of Entrepreneurs, founding member of RETA, promoter of the Industrial As-sociation of Andalusia, member of YEAR (Young European Area of Research) in which it is currently vice-president, as well as continuing its close relation with the Old Students’ Association of the ETSI (En-gineering School) and the Friends of ETSI Foundation.

AICIA is recognized as being a Centre of Innovation and Technology both on a na-tional and Andalusian level, promoter of the Andalusian Systems of Knowledge and regis-tered as an R&D activities entity (MINECO).

Either directly, or through its cultural organization ASTEA (Promotion of Hu-manities in Engineering) it has promoted debates, forums and cultural activities ranging from courses in photography and music to art exhibitions.

As in other years, I must insist that this presentation cannot take the place of con-sulting the detailed Report that it heads and it only tries to highlight that which I consider to be the most notable character-istics and to give a considered opinion on them. The Report continues to improve yearly in its informative contents and in its formal aspects, always according to a rigorous economic criteria of which we are proud.

The “F. de Paula Rojas” Association for Research and Industrial Cooperation of Andalusia (AICIA) has been a pioneer in its academic and research strategy and in its objective to “promote, guide and de-velop industrial investigation” and it con-tinues along these lines. Since 1982, it has dedicated all its efforts to bringing togeth-er University and Business and to Society in general, maintaining an industrial per-spective that has been amplified to other economic sectors without forsaking its engineering vocation, always guaranteed by its close relationship with Seville Engi-neering School. What has been achieved up to now, is due to certain ideas with the ad-equate means to develop them and, above all, put into effect by people who now be-long to the history of AICIA or still contin-ue working for the common good. It falls to me to give thanks to all of them. First, to the firms that confide in us; without their acceptance and loyalty nothing would be

possible. However, at the same time and almost on the same level, the “provider of offers” must be congratulated for earning their confidence. Finally, to the Governing Bodies of AICIA, the work teams and ad-ministrative staff, the Engineering School and Seville University, to all I thank them for all their well done work and ask them to continue so in the future.

F ounded in 1982 at what was then the Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineering of Seville (ETSII) as a re-sult of the initiative of a group of teachers who were aware,

on the one hand, of the need for real experience of the industrial sector in order to transmit this reality to their students and, on the other, of the human resources and capacity of services to industry and society that the ETSII could offer.

The result of the relationship between AICIA and the Engineer-ing School benefits all the bodies and institutions involved. Firstly, it contributes towards student formation, in many cases being the students’ first step in their professional career; it also contributes to university departments because it provides a flex-ible and efficient instrument for collaboration with firms at the same time as receiving economic returns and better equipment.

The firms also benefit as they gain access to the university world and transfer of technology, and finally, society in general ben-

efits because progress is promoted through the development of

I+D+I activities.

The 26 AICIA work teams are also noted for offering technologi-

cal and innovation services to firms, as well as potentiating their

clients’ competitivity and contributing to the development of

society through I+D+I activities.

AICIA has research laboratories in the different branches of its

activities, as well as agreements for joint use of the research

laboratories of Seville University Engineering School.

AICIA is also recognized as Centre of Innovation and Technology

both by the Andalusian Local Government and by the Ministry of

Science and Innovation (CIT nº93 in the register). Furthermore,

in 2013, its recognition by AENOR for its Certificate in I+D+I Man-

The main functions of the General Assembly are to approve accounts, budget, and management, appoint

the Managing Director, admit new full members sign cooperation agreements and modify the statutes.

The managing and administration body, delegated by the General Assembly is the Board of Directors, currently made up of the President, eight members of the board and the Managing Director. Their duties centre on drawing up and administrating the budget, giving the go ahead on proposals for research work, admitting new collaborating members and naming Group Directors.

The direction and coordination of the sci-entific technical activities of the Associa-tion correspond to the Managing Director.

The Direction and Management is struc-tured on Work Groups led by Group Direc-tors appointed by the Board of Directors. These are in charge of directing scientific-technical activities and are autonomous although the Managing Director controls their budget and management.

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY IS THE HIGHEST GOVERNING BODY OF THE ASSOCIATION, COMPOSED

OF FOUNDING MEMBERS AND FULL MEMBERS, WHICH DESIGNATES THE PRESIDENT WHO IS THE

MATERIALS AND NANOTECHNOLOGY

Research into new materials and nanotechnology is basic to various sectors of present day industry. At the same time, a study of the mechanical behaviour of materials is very important for analysing the strength of any element built using

them, structures, machines, etc.

AICIA is in charge of the reception of metallic materials for various firms. This recep-tion involves a selection of destructive tests to guarantee that any batch of material received has all the characteristics established in its qualification and that are used for calculating and designing elements.

AICIA is developing new techniques and tools to simulate and optimize the manufac-turing processes in order to introduce new aeronautical materials, basically coal fiber and other compound materials such as Non-Crimp Fabrics (NCF).

In the realm of Nanotechnology, AICIA has contributed a significant advance in devel-oping and perfecting processes and technologies, applying the latest discoveries in the physics of fluid nano-manipulation.
