Grizzly Boys & Girls to Host Playoff GamesAfter wins Friday night, February 5th over visiting Deer Park, both the girls and boys varsity basketball teams at NHS find themselves in a position to be hosting first round Northeast “A” District playoff games this coming weekend.

The boys varsity will be finishing fourth in the Northeast “A” League. They will host the fifth place team in a looser out playoff game at NHS Friday night, February 12th.

The varsity girls’ final standings, however, are not quite so clear. The girls could finish as high as 2nd. But, they are guaranteed to finish no lower than 4th.

Most likely, the girls will finish in either 3rd or 4th place in the Northeast “A” League. That means that they would be hosting a first round Northeast “A” District playoff game on Saturday, February 13th.

Both games are “play-in” games. Winning will send the teams to the double elimination bracket of the District Tournament. Losing will mark the end of the season for either team.

NEWPORT SCHOOL DISTRICT

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

It is our pleasure to offer the stu-dents of Newport School District breakfast and lunch each day. Breakfast in our district is served at no charge for all students, and the price for lunch is based on house-hold income.

As per our State requirement, Nu-trition Services must have a written charging procedure. We are work-ing to achieve this and have set the following procedures in place.

Any student with a low or outstand-ing lunch balance will receive a re-minder notice by mail in the month of January with the amount owed on their student lunch account.

Starting the last week of January, Blackboard-Connect will call all homes with students who have a negative balance in their lunch ac-

counts. Balance calls will continue being done weekly.

On February 1st any student that has an outstanding balance of more than $8.00 (or about 3 lunches) will receive a simplified meal until the balance is paid or payment arrange-ments have been made.

“Please be assured no child will be refused a lunch or expected to go hungry.”

Please call if you have any ques-tions or need to make arrangements for negative balances. We would be happy to help in any way as we make this transition.

If you have any questions please feel free to call Sheila Myrvang, Director of Nutrition Services, at 509-447-3167 ext 4521.

Newport High School’s Art II students are getting ready to make even more beautiful pieces of work but on a much larger scale. Stu-dents will be painting four-foot by eight-foot murals.

These murals will be painted by both of Art II classes on one of four subjects: Beauty in Nature, The In-land Northwest, The World of Art, or one about the program Breaking Down The Walls.

After students have chosen a theme, they will work in pairs of “threes” on 4’x8’ pieces of tempered ma-sonite.

These murals will be painted on masonite panels so that if the walls themselves need painted, they don’t

have to paint over a mural. We will simply be able to remove the mural, paint the wall, and hang the mural again.

These murals will be shown in the hallways leading to the Art, Shop, and Music Classrooms.

NHS’s art teacher Mr. Matthews stated that, “The murals will reduce the sterility of Newport’s halls mak-ing them more student friendly. And these murals will show off what Newport’s Art students are capable of.”

Similar projects have been very suc-cessful in other schools. Plus, Mr. Matthews has personal experience with this type of project from when he taught Art in Los Angeles.

Running Start provides an oppor-tunity for high school juniors and seniors to enroll in courses at our Community College in Newport or in Spokane, and right here at New-port High School.

Currently there are Running Start “College in the Classroom” opportu-nities within Newport High School. Students are able to take these courses in the NHS building.

The purpose of the program is to

provide academically qualified stu-dents an opportunity to take college courses while they are still in high school. Students may enroll simul-taneously in high school and college classes, or solely in college classes.

Students receive both high school and college credit for completed classes. They receive high school credit toward graduation for classes taken.

To begin this process, students and

their parents are encouraged to contact Newport High School coun-selor Julie Riegel at 447-2481.

The local Community College will also be holding public meetings at the Community College in Newport on April 13th, and May 9th at 6pm.

Again, if you have any other ques-tions or need more information about these opportunities, please contact Julie Riegel at Newport High School at 447-2481.

Newport High School’s Health Occupations Stu-dents of America (HOSA) are currently prepar-ing for the State competition.

Although there is a local competition coming up first this February 23rd through the 25th, the state competition is still in the back of their minds, and HOSA kids are working to be as pre-pared as possible.

NHS HOSA kids are studying and working with their teams to build their projects and presenta-tions for the local competition.

One of the projects involves creating a poster that educates the public on important health topics and issues.

Another project is a research and debate ori-ented activity. Students then compete against other HOSA students from others school such as Mt. Spokane and University High School in Spokane.

This spring HOSA will also be sponsoring a Blood Drive at Newport High School. Plus, they will be taking field trips to visit both the Inland Northwest Blood Bank and the Cadaver Lab at either Washington State University or Spokane Community College.

Lucky Paw Spirit Week at Newport High School

The first Lucky Paw Spirit Week at Newport High was a huge success! All week long during the week of February 1st through the 5th, NHS had dress-up days, spirit competitions, assemblies, and more. The culminating activity was Friday night’s spirit competition when the Grizzlies played host to the Deer Park Stags. Over $1,500 was raised for two youngsters with terminal illnesses in the Deer Park School District, the NHS gym was packed from floor to ceiling, the girls and boys varsity squads both won on the court in convincing fashion, and NHS won the overall spirit competition.
