One of Newport’s very own seniors has been given an amazing opportu- nity recently. Jamison Strang auditioned for the 2017 High School Honors Perfor- mance Series and his application was reviewed by the Honors selection board. His application consisted of a recording of him singing and also some other basic questions. Because Jamison was accepted, he now gets to perform this coming February at Carnegie Hall in New York City along with performers from 49 other states, Guam, Canada, and a number of foreign countries. It is still unclear whether Strang will be doing a musical choir solo or if he will be singing along with a choir arrangement; but either way, he is excited. Strang, who is a new student to NHS this year, has studied music for 7 years and is involved in the NHS Choir and the Mountain Harmony Show Choir. One of Newport’s very own seniors has been given an amazing opportu-nity recently.

Jamison Strang auditioned for the 2017 High School Honors Perfor-mance Series and his application was reviewed by the Honors selection board.

Jamison moved here this year from Thompson Falls, Montana, where he competed in State and District music festivals, receiving a Top Ten.

Congrats Jamison! The Grizzly com-munity is extremely proud of you!

Members of the NHS Choir sing Christmas Carols at Newport’s Hometown Christmas Dec. 10th.

Saturday, December 10th was the date for this year’s City of Newport annual Hometown Christmas cel-ebration at Centennial Plaza.

For the second year now, Newport High School played a key role in this annual activity.

Numerous NHS students were directly involved with celebration planning and activities.

Grizzly Honor Society and Leader-ship students assisted youngsters with gingerbread house construc-tion, ornament decorating and hanging, as well as serving hot cocoa and warm snacks.

NHS’s Leaderhip teacher Rhonda Burnham credited her students when she said, “Our Grizzlies did an absolutely outstanding job planning and assiting in this year’s Home-town Christmas!”

Santa even made an appearance, taking pictures with children at the Newport Gazebo. The Newport Christmas tree ceremony concluded festivities shortly after sunset.

Student committee member Trystan Potter included that, “There were more poeple than I expected. It was really cool seeing so many commu-nity members together in one place full of the Christmas Spirit.”

NHS Junior Fishes With and Like a ProAt Newport High School our students have a wide va-riety of interests. J.T Long is a junior at the high school and is involved in the Washington State Fishing Club.

J.T. has been bass fishing with his dad since he was five years old. He fishes during spring, summer, and fall. When asked, J.T. said that, “summer is my favorite sea-son to fish, and I especially enjoy fishing on Lake Pend Oreille.”

His fishing has taken him as far away as Minnesota and the The Great Lakes. Plus, during this school year’s Spring Break, J.T. plans to travel to North Carolina to fish with and meet professional bass fishermen Casey Ashley.

Last year J.T. went to Lake Chelan to compete in the Washington State Fishing Club Championships and got 2nd place out of 20 teams.

In his competitions he uses his Stratos 21SS Extreme bass boat with a 250HP Suzuki motor. Furthermore, Long is sponsored by Okuma (Okuma offers him free and discounted rods and reels) and by Savage Gear (Savage supplies J.T. with baits and clothing).

Long is trying to get a Newport High School fishing club started, so he can share his passion for fishing with others.

Both the Grizzly Girls and Boys have tipped off their 2016-2017 seasons.

The Varsity boys and girls opened their seasons against the Bonners Ferry Badgers at home on Novem-ber 29th. The boys lost 56-44, and the girls lost 45-42.

On December 2nd, the Grizzlies traveled to St. Georges to battle the Dragons. The girls ran into a buzzsaw losing 58-28, while the boys won a close one 43-40.

Both teams returned home De-cember 6th, and both teams picked up victories against the Spartans. The boys won 74-39, and the girls won 66-42.

The Grizzlies hosted the Scotties from Freeman Friday, December 9th. The boys struggled to score, but lost by only 6 points (38-32) to last year’s Washington State 1A 2nd place team. The girls, how-ever, controled from start to finish, defeating the Scotties 51-40.

The boys and girls each had over-all records of 2-2 prior to entering their games against Deer Park on Tuesday, December 13th.

The Grizzlies will have a busy stretch through the duration of Christmas Break playing at Deer Park (Dec. 13), vs Chewelah (Dec. 16), at Priest River (Dec. 16), at the West Valley Tourney (Dec. 27-28), and at Medical Lake (Jan. 3).

A Great Griz Rowing for the Rockies Rowers Hi Griz! Today I have for you a bit of a different subject. Usually, I

interview teach-ers and coaches of programs that our school offers. But for this article,I had an opportunity to interview someone about something that is completely new and different.

This month I interviewed Quinn Barnwell, a sixteen year old junior at Newport High School, about his out-of-school activity... rowing! For those of you who do not know what rowing is, it is a sport that includes many people gathered in a boat paddling to get from Point A to Point B. According to Quinn, he found out about rowing about three years ago from “a guy named Guy” who he knew through his mom, Mary Barnwell. According to Quinn, his fam-ily thinks it’s “pretty cool” that he

rows, is having fun, and is enjoying a sport. The team he rows for is called Rockies Rowers and has a variety of people. Some come from out of state, and even out of the country! Their ages range from 16 to about 50 years old. Quinn competes at the Mud-hole in Priest River and practices throughout the spring and summer. Last year, his team competed in

an 8+ race and completed the course in 7:03, an impressive time consider-ing that this was their first 8+ race. I can only imagine the excitement of the people watching as the Rock-ies Rowers crossed the finish line! The second place competitors came in at a time of 8:20. Way to go team! If you have any interest in join-ing a rowing team, or if you’d like to learn more about the Rockies Row-ers, you can visit www.porpa.org
