Why Are We Here? Why are we here at Mass today? I am here because I do this for a living. Many come here today because they go to mass every Sunday. Many come here today because that is what they do every Christmas and Easter. But whether we go to mass every day or every Sunday or

every Christmas and Easter, why do we do it? Why do we take a perfectly good chunk of time, which we could be doing something else we enjoy, and take the trouble to go to Mass?

In today’s Gospel reading, both Peter and the beloved disciple arrive at the tomb of Jesus. Both see the same evidence, an empty tomb and burial wrappings. Peter sees no more than meets the eye. Jesus is gone and he does not know where and why. He might even have thought, “If someone took the body, why would the burial wrappings be here? After all, when Jesus resuscitated Lazarus, Lazarus came out of the tomb still wearing the wrappings. The beloved disciple, however, sees and believes.

We are here today because to some degree, we have taken a leap of faith and believe. The crucial point of today’s gospel reading is that belief in Jesus’ resurrection is not a matter of evidence. It cannot be proven by fact or by history. It is always a matter of faith.

The question is what are we to do with this belief? Some may say, “I believe God exists, should not that be good enough?” Maybe it is just me, but that statement sounds empty; it sounds unfulfilling. It simply is not good enough to have this belief of the existence of God and sit idly by as time goes on toward eternity. Believing IN God, having faith means we have to do something. It means that we are in relationship with God. It forces us to ask ourselves from time to time if we are nurturing our relationship with God or if the things of this world have a higher priority.

What are we doing to nurture our relationship with God? Before the Eucharistic Prayer, there is the preface, and before the preface, the preface dialogue. This is where the priest says to the assembly, “Lift up your hearts.” And the assembly responds, “We lift them up to the Lord.” Sometimes we have to ask ourselves, “Do we really mean that?” That is what Saint Paul was calling for us to do in today’s second reading in his Letter to the Colossians. He says, “Think of what is above, not of what is on earth.” Lifting our hearts to the Lord takes priority over what happens in this world.

Paul also says, “If then you were raised by Christ, seek what is above.” What does he mean by “If then you were raised by Christ?” Many believers look at this Christ event as something that happened 2000 years ago, and it is something we just merely remember, by being here at mass today with all the pomp and circumstance. However, by virtue of our baptism, we are united to the life of Jesus Christ and the Pascal mystery. It is not just remembering the life of Christ; it is participating in the life of Christ. It is being in direct relationship with Christ. We as a community are just as united with Christ today the same way as the Apostles were united to Christ 2000 years ago. And because we are united with Christ just as the Apostles were, we are called to share in their mission.

Stewards Among Us

At Easter, we celebrate that our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, conquered death, rose from the dead, and remains very much alive. To the world of non-believers: what!? It is quite a big reality to swallow. But for the believer, it is a reality that inspires us to the point where we find ourselves constantly sharing the Gospel with everyone we meet! Right?

So what does Easter mean to you? The question is not what do you believe. The question is what impact does Easter have on you? How do your actions demonstrate the power of Easter? What does it mean we you hear that we, the Church, are an Easter people?

You may be saying right now that you have no intention of becoming an evangelist, passing out Bibles to all you meet. But I would like to suggest that you actually have a more powerful way of evangelizing others: everyday stewardship. Actions speak louder than words and the way you live your life can be a great testimony to all those you encounter. By acknowledging the gifts you have been given, cultivating those so they grow to an increase, and then sharing them fully with God and with others in God's name will give testimony to your belief that Jesus is alive and seeking a relationship with each of his people.

If more of us won't live our lives in this manner, then non-believers and non-intentional disciples will ask the question, "What difference does Easter make anyway?" Jesus died and rose for you and me. To be sure, it DOES make a difference. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS © Liturgical Publications Inc

(continued from page 2)

That mission is outlined by Saint Peter in our first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. “He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead.” Our mission today is simple: to preach and to testify. That means each and every one of us, not just the ones who work for the Church. Every member of the Catholic Church has a share and a role in this mission.

So how do we carry out this mission today? The first thing we do is to ensure we do have a good relationship with God. That means attend mass regularly and celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation from time to time.

The second thing we do is to educate ourselves on the faith. How do we preach the truth if we do not understand what that truth is? In this education, we need to study the scripture, and study the tradition through the catechism of the Catholic Church. It is when we have a handle on how the Church has come about her teachings is when we can truly testify on her behalf.

The third thing we do is to be an example of holiness. The call to holiness is a universal call. Granted that we are all fallen human beings, and easily fall into sin, but we still owe to ourselves and to others and to God to do the best we can. The more our goodness shines through, the more credible we are in our testimony.

Finally, through our relationship with God, through our knowledge of the truth, and through our goodness, we are able to testify that Jesus Christ is Lord and that we share in his resurrection. Now, I do not expect everyone to go to the nearest street corner, get on a soapbox and start preaching. People passing by would think we are crazy, and we would lose any credibility. However, we should not be afraid to show that we are a people of faith in public.

How many of us go to eat at a restaurant and make the sign of the cross and say grace before eating? It is our example of how we live our lives that preaches volumes. It is when our faith helps us to have courage in the face

of adversity that preaches vol-umes. It is the joy that we get from our faith that preaches volumes. When people realize that our faith is where we draw our strength, our happiness, our joy, maybe they would want to be a part of it too.

Why are here today? We are here because the beloved disciple went into the empty tomb, saw and believed. We too believe and have that faith.

Jesus Christ is risen today. Let us proclaim it to the ends of the earth, Alleluia, Alleluia. —TB

St. Pius has an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) that can be used in emergencies. It is located in the north stairwell so that it is easily accessible for the upper and lower levels. Bob Wernimont will provide training for anyone interested in learning how to use it after Masses Saturday April 29 and Sunday, April 30. This is an informal session. No experience is necessary just a want to know what to do in an emergency. Almost all AED’s work the same so this training will be relevant no matter what AED you encounter.

Future bankers. St. John's 2nd graders visited the Vermillion State Bank last week. The students learned how deposited money is handled, stored, and secured. This reinforced the lessons on money in their math and social studies units. The staff of the bank were very generous with their time. St. John's School enjoys partnering with community businesses to bring real-life learning and experiences to our students.
