[LANCE AND LENNA YOUNG]

Lance ’76 and Lenna ’77 Young both believe that attending a small, private college had a tangible impact on their futures after graduation. Lenna was vice president of Academic Affairs at Greenville Technical College until her retirement last year. Lance’s 29-year career in the U.S. Air Force led him to Clemson University where he served as the USAF ROTC Detachment Commander and chair of Aerospace Studies until his retirement at the rank of colonel in 2008.

At Newberry, Lance and Lenna got involved in a variety of activities from student government to Greek Life.

“For me, the skills and abilities I gained in these roles prepared me for today’s workforce where partnering and teamwork are truly keys to success,” Lenna said. Lance concurred. “Like Lenna, I believe those opportunities were positive contributors to my career achievements.” Lance and Lenna’s penchant for campus participation also led them to one another through their work together on the yearbook. They’ve been together ever since and just celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary in November. Newberry contributed to their futures in many ways and now they want to pay it forward. “Because I want students to experience what I did, I give,” Lenna said. “We want to see Newberry College continue to thrive and offer students unique, relevant and transformational liberal arts experiences that translate into graduates who make a positive difference in the world.”

“Why We Give”

A N N U A L G I V I N G

Wendell ’81 and Chanette ‘82 Davis share countless happy memories of their time at Newberry College. They reminisce on good times spent with lifelong friends, cheering for Wendell as he played football for the Scarlet and Gray or just the simple pleasure of talking and watching TV together in the Derrick Hall TV lounge. Their years at Newberry also spurred a period of personal growth at a pivotal time in their lives

“The diverse, liberal arts education Newberry provided allowed me to be comfort-able in any setting, whether in a senator’s office in Washington, D.C., in a federal court hearing, in an executive board meeting or speaking with residents at a neighborhood gathering,” said Wendell, now the retired Director of Public Safety for the City of Orangeburg,Wendell has remained connected with the College, having served on the Alumni Board of Managers, the former Indian Club and as president of the African-American Alumni Association, where he spearheaded the group’s endowment of a scholarship.

“Chanette and I feel it is important to give back to the institution that provided such a platform for growth in our lives,” Wendell said. “We want future students to have the same benefits from Newberry that we have enjoyed.”

[BRIAN AND KAYCE SHEALY]

A well-rounded liberal arts education like the one they received at Newberry College made a real difference in the lives of Brian ‘04 and Kayce ‘05 Shealy.

“Newberry prepared us academically for post-graduate degrees and careers,” Kayce said. “More importantly, it helped us to become Christian leaders in our families, church, community and professions.” Kayce is associate professor and chair of Pharmacy Practice at Presbyterian

College School of Pharmacy. Brian is co-owner of Economy Furniture Co., a fourth-generation family business.

“Being exposed to many different areas through the liberal arts curriculum provided me with an awareness and appreciation of topics outside of my specialty,” Kayce said. Brian and Kayce received both academic and athletic scholarships from Newberry. Now they give back through volunteer service and financial gifts to the College.

“Our experience would not have been possible without many generous donors who shared the same passion for Newberry College,” Brian said. “We hope those we impact also will be inspired to give back and help future generations of students.”

“We give so that others may have the same opportunities,” Brian said. “The world could certainly use a little more Scarlet and Gray!”

Alumni and friends continue to be loyal supporters of the Newberry College mission. We logged another year of growth among donors whose individual gifts tallied $1,000 or more, with a record-breaking 299 entering the ranks of $1,000 donors. Annual fundraising topped last year by 10 percent, and we marked an important milestone in our Scaling the Summit capital campaign when we passed the halfway point of our campaign goal.

Areas of SupportHow are your gifts to Newberry College being put to use? Here’s a breakdown for the allocation of gifts and gifts-in-kind received during Fiscal Year 2017-18.

Thank you to the members of the Heritage Society!

The Heritage Society of Newberry CollegeThe Heritage Society is an association of individuals who, through a desire to assure the future strength of the institution, provide support through provisions in their estate plans. The name itself, Heritage, acknowledges the manner in which careful planning safe-guards and protects the quality and character of Newberry College.Planned gifts enable donors to preserve their assets during their lifetime while leaving a valuable legacy to Newberry College. No legacy could be as lasting as one that guarantees the kind of learning our students enjoy during their years at Newberry College and no investment could be as rich in its ultimate return. We’ll be hosting our annual Heritage Society gathering in early spring this year. Scaling the Summit

With the growing need nationwide for

scientists and medical professionals,

STEM education is an important

investment for Newberry. With

continued growth in our Biology and

Chemistry majors, sustained interest

in the Nursing major and new

science-focused majors in the

planning stages, new and upgraded

facilities are essential to help provide

the best possible experience for

students preparing for these

in-demand career fields.

SCIENCE, MATH, ART and NURSING

Project Features• Nursing Building: New construction of a 12,000 square-foot facility on newly acquired land at

the corner of College and Evans Streets. The new facility allows us to provide nursing students with state-of-the-art classrooms and clinical simulation labs to develop their skills in a realistic setting.

• Science, Math and Art Building: Renovation of the existing 57,000 square foot facility will provide upgraded chemistry and biology labs, modernized classrooms, additional faculty offices and new student lounge space.

When we embarked on Scaling the Summit, Newberry College’s first comprehensive campaign, the highest peak for our fundraising goal was hidden in the clouds from our view at base camp. Since then, we’ve been steadily climbing and recently marked an important milestone in our campaign journey when we reached the midpoint of our journey. With $18.5 million raised toward our $35 million goal, our view of the summit is getting clearer every day. In the meantime, we’re aiming for the next plateau with two capital projects that will soon be within our grasp.

Stadium Village, which includes

renovation of the stadium and

construction of a field house,

locker rooms, classrooms, offices

and expanded training facilities,

is a much-needed addition to

the campus. With the oldest

football stadium in the league and

training facilities stretched to the

max, updated facilities will help

Newberry better serve current

students and attract top prospects

for future growth.

STADIUM VILLAGE

Project Features• Stadium: Modernize stadium, upgrade seating and scoreboard, renovate press box with upgraded

control room and game operations center.

• Field House: Expand and update athletic training/rehab facilities, football locker rooms, coaching/athletic staff offices, game day suites, classrooms and conference rooms.

• Sport-Specific Buildings: Locker rooms and coaches’ offices for Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Field Hockey and Football (with video screening room).

A N N U A L G I V I N G

Albert ‘02 and Precious Garrett ‘02 lived within 10 minutes of each other growing up in their hometown of Brooklyn, New York, but it wasn’t until they enrolled at a picturesque campus in the middle of South Carolina that they met one another. Neither would ever have expected they’d move 750 miles to the south only to find love with someone who was practically a neighborhood away from them back home. Their first meeting – in the Newberry cafeteria, remains one of their favorite college memories. Albert and Precious used their business degrees to launch successful careers. With a B.S. in Business Administration, Albert is now a commission analyst at ADP in Augusta, GA. Precious turned her B.A. in International Studies toward her work as human resources section leader at Bridgestone in Aiken, SC.

“We give to the College because we want current and future Newberry students to receive a quality education,” Precious said. As former student-athletes, the couple also continues to take a special interest in Athletics, giving to the Lettermen’s Club and Athletic Club in addition to the Annual Fund.

“We hope our gifts to Newberry encourage the College’s student-athletes to take pride in representing Newberry College in the classroom and in competition,” Albert said.

[JOHN AND CAROL THOMPSON]

Longtime Newberry residents John and Carol Thompson met at Florida Southern College (a small Methodist college) where she earned a teaching degree and he was pre-med. After medical school at George Washington and residency at MUSC, John and Carol knew they wanted to live and work in a small town in the south that was home to a college. The presence of a college would offer access to a wide variety of fine arts, courses, lectures, athletic competitions

and other activities commonly hosted by colleges and typically open to the public. John established Newberry Internal Medicine and soon recruited Dr. Mark Davis ’73 to join the practice. Mark had developed a deep affection for the community during his undergraduate years at Newberry College and was pleased with the opportunity to return. Forty-one years later, the practice John founded is still going strong. John and Carol provide for Newberry College with gifts to the Annual Fund, membership in the Athletic Club and support for capital projects, such as the new nursing building that is part of the Scaling the Summit capital campaign.

“We want to see Newberry College continue to improve.” “Capital projects are essential to that,” he said. “We feel it is essential to have non-alumni in the community involved if we are to succeed.”

EndowmentEndowed gifts are a vital source of permanent funds that make a Newberry College education possible for many students. You can make a difference for Newberry and its students in any of the following ways:

CONGREGATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS from churches and individuals make a Newberry education more accessible and strengthen our ties to the church and our Lutheran heritage.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS help us attract and retain students who demonstrate academic promise, interest in a certain field of study and/or financial need.

ENDOWED CHAIRS support the research and teaching of exceptional faculty and help us recruit and retain top caliber scholars.

Establishing an endowed fund is one of the most enduring and meaningful ways an individual or organization can make a difference at Newberry College. To learn more about establishing an endowment at Newberry College, please contact the Office of Advancement at 803.321.5147.

Donors who make estate and other planned gifts are recognized as members of The Heritage Society, the College’s planned giving society.

GIFTS OF REAL [email protected] or 803.321.5617Gifts of real estate are an excellent way to make a difference in the lives of Newberry College students and lower your tax liability at the same time. Gifts of property or a percentage of property may help you avoid paying capital gains tax, lower your current income tax and reduce your future federal estate taxes. Real estate gifts may increase your income if they are structured through a life income gift. You may also deed property, including vacation homes, to Newberry while retaining the lifetime right to occupy the property. Gifts of real estate must meet certain criteria and be approved by Newberry College’s Board of Trustees.

[email protected] or 803.321.5694A new or old insurance policy may be an appropriate way to make a gift to Newberry College for future endowment priorities. Gifts of insurance will not be accepted for capital or current programming needs; only permanent life insurance policies, i.e., whole life or universal life, are accepted as gifts. You can fund a new policy naming Newberry College as beneficiary, or you can name Newberry College as beneficiary of an existing policy. For each policy, provisions must be made to cover future premium payments. If you transfer ownership of the policy to Newberry College, all future premium payments are tax-deductible. Newberry College will only undertake the responsibility of making premium payments if the donor makes gifts to the College equal to the payments. If such gifts cease, the College will convert the policy to its cash value.

As with any financial decision, you should consult your CPA, attorney and other financial advisors.
