Patrice Tuohy is an award-winning writer, editor and author of a number of articles on Catholic life. Recently, she wrote this interesting story that offers us guidance and direction for these challenging times, where we may find ourselves in a place when our patience may be wearing thin. A friend of hers, she wrote, had to take her son to the hospital after a nasty fall. As she sat in the crowded waiting room (pre-Covid), she quietly observed the folks around her. Most just sat with their phones or stared at the television set blaring in front of them. But one young woman’s voice could be heard above all the other noise. The woman was scolding her four-year-old, who had a deep gash above her eye and a bloody nose. She heard the woman say in a loud, annoyed voice to the child to sit still, stop wining, wipe your eyes! The mother’s harsh commands were relentless.

How could the woman be so mean to her little girl, who was obviously scared and uncomfortable? The final comment from the young mother, and the point of why this story was eventually shared was, “this is not how I planned my day.” I share this with you as a way of reflecting on the challenges we all now face, living with this pandemic. It boggles my mind that so many disregard the seriousness of our situation and won’t wear a mask or cooperate with social distancing, avoiding large crowds and gatherings. This seems to be more the case with our younger population right now. Yes, this is inconvenient, but that is true for all of us.. No one plans for a pandemic or pencils in accidents on our calendars. The angry young mom in the story had yet to learn an important lesson that we must all remember. NO PLANS ARE DEFINITE! The best we can do, as followers of Jesus, is to be prepared each day to give a compassionate response – come what may. One of the things we need to keep in mind as we walk together through this pandemic is nothing can separate us from God’s love. Christ is always on call for us, ready to heal us, console us and support us, especially when we are in need. Are we ready to do the same for others? A word of thanks to all who continue to quietly reach out to those in need of food support. The donations continue to come in for our local pantries. Please remember to drop off your contributions to the bins behind the Parish Center, by the back door on the north side of the building. Have a great week ahead. With you a Christian, For you a priest. P.S. The next courtyard concert will be on Friday, August 21, at 7:00 p.m. The Dennis O’Brien Band will be performing classic covers with meaningful arrangements! (Jackson Brown and the Eagles, Van Morrison and more!) We ask that you call the parish office and leave your name if you would like a place on the lawn. Bring your own chair or blanket to sit on. Masks are required, as is social distancing. Once seated, you may remove your mask. Feel free to bring a beverage of your choice and enjoy the mini-concert -- it will be a lovely evening!

Here I Am Keeping Connected @ St Giles

In anticipation of creating a more robust communication system, we have launched “Here I Am – Keeping Connected @ St. Giles” with a simple Google form that we are asking all parishioners to fill out so that we can make sure we have the most

current information for all members of our faith family. By answering these few simple questions, it will help us ensure you are receiving important information as it becomes

available and allow the parish records to be updated as appropriate. There is also a final question that allows you to put forward anything you’d like held in prayer by all of us in community. Thank you in advance for taking a few minutes to complete this! You can copy this URL to your browser to submit the form:

SpiritualLife&Worship

Come celebrate the Vigil of the Assumption of Mary

(also called the Dormition, or the “falling asleep,” of Mary)

Friday, August 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the Church Courtyard

What will we do to observe the Feast? ♦ Process with candlelight to the courtyard shrine of Mary. ♦ Pray the Rosary for Healing and Peace. ♦ Listen to the Eastern Church’s ancient legend of the Falling Asleep of Mary. ♦ Decorate Her shrine with gifts from our gardens. The evening will give us an opportunity to reverence a long held devotional tradition of our Catholic faith as well as an opportunity to be together in prayer and fellowship.

Besides flowers from our gardens for the shrine, we are invited to bring a non-perishable donation for our local food pantries.

Wear your mask, bring a lawn chair, practice social distancing.

Make your reservation by calling the Parish office at 708-383-3430.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry will meet on Monday, August 10, in the St. Giles Church Courtyard from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. The time is being adjusted later to allow for an event in the church. To all Prayer Shawl Ministers, please come with a facemask, a chair, something to drink and any shawls that you have finished. It will be wonderful to see you. If the weather is nasty we will arrange to do a Zoom call. And to all Members of the St. Giles Parish Family, The St. Giles Prayer Shawl Ministers continue to create, bless, and distribute prayer shawls during this time. There are a large number and variety of shawls, lap blankets and scarves available at the Parish Center for those suffering or for those celebrating a joyous event. The shawls are wrapped in plastic and dated with the date the shawl was last touched by human hands. These shawls are intended to be a reminder of the presence of a loving God and the prayers of a loving St. Giles Parish. You can pick up a shawl by calling the Parish Center at 708-383-3430 and leaving a message. One of the staff members will return your call and set up a time to meet you. If that will not work for you, let the staff member know and one of the Prayer Shawl Ministers will plan to get one to you. May you be wrapped in God’s love, Margie Rudnik, for the St. Giles Prayer Shawl Ministry

FOOD COLLECTION FOR THOSE IN NEED

Parish Council Statement on Racial Justice The Parish Council of St. Giles Parish believes that Black Lives Matter. Rooted in the Gospel imperative that all life is sacred, from natural conception to natural death, we acknowledge that systems in our country have enacted practices that do not reflect this core value – especially for those of color. Systemic racism is a social sin that requires action, remembering racial justice is not an issue of politics but of human rights. Catholic social teaching reminds us that God takes the side of the poor, marginalized, and underprivileged. We stand with Christ. We call on all members of the St. Giles community to join in such efforts. As part of a Universal Church, we support all causes that respect the sanctity of life. However, at this time as our country is dealing with the demon of racism, our Black Lives Matter banner is a response to the current cry for justice to be heard. As a Parish Council, to better position ourselves to become accomplices in the work of racial justice in dismantling systemic racism, we: Support the display of the St. Giles Black

Lives Matter banner,

Invite our parish community to learn about the individuals whose names are on the banner and why their lives mattered,

Encourage the initiation of peace circles to promote deeper understanding, deeper listening, and healing,

Seek greater working collaboration with our brothers and sisters in the Austin community.

We invite you to listen with an open heart, lean into your discomfort, share equity of voice, and lead with love.

We cannot close our eyes to any form of racism or exclusion,

while pretending to defend the sacredness of every human life.

- Pope Francis
