At 230 in the morning of May 6 Chiz Bell was unable to sleep with the thought that Bob Heim needed to be rescued him from his plight For the past 15 months Bob has performed the Herculean task of Editor-in-Chief of Toosday Toons

collaborated with Dan Gilmartin in editing and designing the chapter website and served the Nassau Mid-Island Chapter as Vice President of Marketing amp Public Relations Adding to that he has carried on his professional career as a public relations entrepreneur These duties have been exacerbated by health issues looking for new living quarters and church and family responsibilities In that vein I have volunteered to resume my former position as Editor and Publisher of Toosday Toons on an interim basis How long the ldquointerimrdquo will be is anyonersquos guess

FIRST AND FOREMOST Let us all congratulate and thank Bob for 15 lively editions of our monthly bulletin produced with his unique imagination and sense of innovation Those newsletters were packed with news and information that delighted our reading audiences both within and outside the chapter Bob says that he hopes to be back with the chorus soon which is good news for the tenor section and the for the chorus as well

A few weeks ago I remember a baseball player who had been in a terrible slump got a crucial ninth inning hit and won a ball game for his team The next day when he was asked how great it felt to have made such an important contribution his response was That was yesterday We have another game to play today

As a golfer I know the importance of putting what has happened for good or ill behind you and looking ahead to what comes next When driving a car an occasional glance at the rear view mirror is helpful but you better keep your main attention on the road ahead

We had a wonderful year with multiple sing outs our Carnegie Hall experience and a terrific Spring show Unfortunately the bottom line fell short of our expectations but all that is history What we need to do now is get ready for next year

The people who put together this years show are all agreeable to offer help and guidance to their successors but doing these jobs for a number of years theyve done more than their share in keeping our chapter healthy They need a break and we need people to step up and take over

First and foremost we need a show chairman for next year We also need someone to put together the show journal A ticket chairman and a script writer to work with the show chairman are also needed

While were looking ahead we plan to go to the Division contest again next year It s currently scheduled for June 5 and 6 but the venue is yet to be de termined I t s a lmost cer ta in ly going to be somewhere in Pennsylvania and those who go will be expected to pay their own meals and lodging Its not too soon to plan ahead

Our veterans relate their Memorial Day celebrations

Many of the members of our chapter are veterans who have served in the military service at one time or another during their lifetime I have asked them to share some of the ways they have commemorated Memorial Day

Regarding Memorial Day when I was in uniform in the early 50s the Navy had this habit of believing that the place for ships was at sea and so Memorial Day was pretty much like any other day at sea I do remember singing in the Navy chapel in Norfolk where the hymn ldquoEternal Father Strong to Saverdquo was sung with great emotion

In recent years I h a v e h a d t h e luxury of riding in a yellow Jeep all decked out in my N a v y u n i f o r m driven by Kevin Horton the editor

of the North Shore Gazette a Glen Cove weekly publication For the past two years who do I find playing his bright golden trumpet in the parade band Bob Merrill our multitalented baritone who will be in the marching unit again this year The tightly knit denizens of the one-square mile village of Sea Cliff would hang a round Cl i f ton Park where the parade ceremonies ware traditionally held and talk about the ldquogood old daysrdquo

A l t h o u g h I s e r v e d o v e r s e a s n o t h i n g catastrophic occurred except for the fact that Russia invaded Hungary and all orders to ship home were cancelled Since the US and NATO did nothing and I shipped home theres no big story regarding my service

Michael T CreaneyI wasnt in the military however my Dad served for the British Army (see I am Scottish) He was a Lovatt Scout (forerunner of US Green Berets) I have his medals etc He was captured behind the lines and was a POW in Germany for over 1 year Is his experience something you are looking for I can expand on his exploits

The establishment of an ROTC program at NYU in my sophomore year led me to a three-year active duty stint in the Air Force and thanks to a savvy Master Sergeant set the stage for what would be my lifes profession Though intentions were for me to be in flight training a (red lens) test indicating a problem produced a redirectionmdashthe recommendation that I serve in a public information capacity for the Ninth Air Force and its Tactical Air Command bases in the US It would center on working closely with local media and among other things include writing and producing a series of radio and TV s h o w s ( c a l l e d R e v u e I n B l u e ) featuring melodies performed by a talented group of airmen an Air Force marching band and a dance band along with interviews with key mi l i tary personnel Other A i r Force s i n g i n g i n c l u d e d p a r t i c i p a t i o n i n t h e Sampsonaires chorus (Sampson Air Force Base Geneva New York) and before active duty conducting an ROTC Chorus For me the Air Force offered outstanding rewards Bill McCoyrsquos CommentsI dont have any direct military traditions however since I have become active in the K of C I expect to be elected ldquoNavigatorrdquo (Officer in Charge) of the Pa-

BELATED PRAISE FROM OUR ANNUAL SHOW ATTENDEES

The 64th Annual Show of the Nassau Md-Island ChapterrdquoReel to Realrdquo won high praise from the audiences at Seaford High School on April 26 and 27 Show Chairman Hal Verity and Chorus Director Maurice Debar proved to be the perfect team in guiding the chorus to the next higher stage of musicianship and stage presence

From the curtain raiser ldquoThe Chordbuster Marchrdquo to the final note of ldquoLet Me Call You Sweetheartrdquo the chorus regaled the audience with such barbershop favorites as ldquoLida Roserdquo and ldquoSeventy-Six Trombonesrdquo from The Music Man ldquoIf I Were a Rich Manrdquo and ldquoSunrise Sunsetrdquo from Fiddler On the Roof ldquoThe Impossible Dream from the musical Man From La Mancha ldquoYoursquove Gotta Have Heartrdquo from the musical Damn Yankees and ldquoDo You Hear the People Singrdquo from Les Miserables to name a few

(Continued from page 3)dre Pio Assembly on July 1st(I am unopposed just like the barbershoppersrsquo elections) Padre Pio Assembly is a Military theme organization because we are called ldquoSir KnightsrdquoI would like to tell you about a tradition I will perform on May 24th Along with many other organizations such as the VFW American Legion Boy amp Girl Scouts and others will gather at 5 am on Saturday May 24thto place American flags on the tombstones of all the grave sites in the sections designated to us This will be my fourth year of participation and I enjoy it very much except for the early hour that we have to be there I guess they want us to complete the job before relatives andor friends arrive to visit those who are buried in the cemetery

I have played trumpet in the sea Cliff and Glen Cove Memorial Day parades off and on for about 30 years My trumpet teacher Felix Sangenito was a beloved figure in the area whose band played all the Italian favorites and we always did the military theme songs as well His son Paul carries on the tradition today and I enjoy playing in it and paying my respects as my Dad was a Navy man who luckily survived Iwo Jima

Bob MiragliaMemorial Day is almost like Fatherrsquos Day for me because in the town we grew up in there was an annual Veterans Day Parade with military honors military bands and school bands My dad and his friends were all World War II vets The whole town would turn out for the event lined up both sides of the street with flags waving Irsquoll never forget my Dad holding me on shoulders while swaying to the music of the marching bandsThe parade traveled the length of the town along the main road past the fire house and library where they did a 21 gun salute to honor the veterans and continued to the town park where everyone celebrated with picnics

As for our annual show all comments were positive No one seemed to miss having a guest quartet which made the show a little shorter than past years

Our choice of songs was liked by all especially the songs from Les Miserables and Man of La Mancha

I think more effort should be made by the membership to sell more tickets The attendance at our shows has been dwindling over the years

Re the show this was my second one having joined just over 1 year ago I wasnt as nervous as last year and my family and friends noticed it in my stage presence - thank you Maurice I received many congratulatory emails about our performance One from my college roommates wife and one from a HS friend who is a professional s inger I have pasted their comments in sequence below

We really really enjoyed the performance It was so much better than Carnegie Hall Yes we were impressed with CH because neither one of us had ever been there before But at the high school we were up close and personal We could even see the whites of your eyes Wish Kens mom

could have been there I wish my dad and mother were alive to see it too They loved that type of music Ho hum Bottom line Michael is it was emotional for both of us Memories with our parents and YOU Loved it

Great job at the concert on Sunday I went there after my gig at Duckie (getting there about 345) Stayed till the end and planned on saying hello to you after the concert but I got a call about an emergency involving one of my daughters and had to leave immediately during God Bless America

Ray Shotterrsquos CommentsI was asked to see if Steve Stojowskirsquos stool was found at Seaford High School (since it is missing) I heard comments by students and staff that our concert there in April was a smashing success I also attended a concert given by The Huntington Mens Chorus at Huntington High School ( a beautiful site) on May 3rd Sixty men in white tuxedos sang about 12 numbers and featured 4 of their members singing solo numbers to enhance variety Their sound was awe-inspiring and the house was packed They also had a journal with ads but theirs paled in comparison to the LIHs journal (kudos to Bob Miraglia)In Conclusion

Elaine Glicksman Joins Her Sam in the Life Beyond

Word came through the internet by way of Bill Ruth that Elaine Glicksman passed away last Valentinersquos Day after a year long illness We will always remember Sam and Elaine as being an ideal couple Wersquore glad theyrsquore together again May they both rest in Godrsquos eternal peace Elaine was 77

CONGRATULATIONS STEVE AND KATHE STOJOWSKI NEW GRANDPARENTS

QUENTIN MONROE STOJOWSKI was born on Monday May 12 Mother and baby are doing fine Kathe was there (Silver Spring Maryland) on his birth day and shersquos now back on Long Island Steve went down to see him for the first time on Saturday May 17 the first day after his first week on the new job

While working at his new job in Pennsylvania Steve will be staying at his daughterrsquos guest bedroom in Downingtown Pennsylvania (45 minutes away) until he and Kathe can get their Long Island home ready for sale and find a permanent place close enough to the job

Steve has already visited the Bryn Mawr Mainliners and even they seem totally different from the Long Island Harmonizers Steve went on to say that hersquoll look back on these comments a few months from now and probably laugh at himself He also said that he does not expect to be back on Long Island until Memorial Day weekend

DEBAR AND GRIESHABER AID BIG APPLE CHORUS TO WIN GOLD

MAURICE DEBAR and BILL GRIESHABER were on the risers at the Northern Division Chorus Competition in Scranton Pennsylvania on May 2 2014 as Manhattan Chapterrsquos Big Apple Chorus copped the gold medal (See article on the Mid-Atlantic District Page page 9) Their ability to maintain dual membership in the Nassau Mid-Island and Manhattan chapters indicates their indicates their dedication to this wonderful hobby

HOFSTRA STUDENTS SUGGEST BARBERSHOP HARMONY FOR TV

WESTBURY NY ndash A television segment dealing with the pleasures of barbershop singing and more specifically the Nassau Mid-Island Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society has been produced by two Hofstra University students for the schools For Long Island TV series The close to four-minute examination of barbershop co-produced by Nicholas Stanhouse and Nick McGee includes interviews with Chapter President George Seelinger Musical Director Maurice Debar and longtime member Bill Ruth Footage also shows The Long Island Harmonizers Chorus in preparation for its 64th Annual Show held April 26 - 27 as well as the singers on stage at that time The suggested segment for the TV show is found on YouTube athttpswwwyoutubecomwatchv=uP_JSPGZyys ldquoFor Long Islandrdquo covering ldquothe people places and culture of Long Islandrdquo is student-produced under the universityʼs Department of Radio Television and FilmldquoWe are indeed grateful that barbershopping and our chapter that has been entertaining local audiences for over 60 years was selected as a subject for this student projectrdquo said Seelinger ldquoWe should hope that it leads to further interest in our art form our Barbershop Harmony Society that traces back to

RAY SHOTTER HELPS YALE STUDENT MAKE A CHOICE

harmonies over the hardwood at least for a year The 6-foot-6 forward is one of the 14 students selected to make up the next version of the Whiffenpoofs the worldrsquos famous male a cappella singing group

The group formed in 1909 is comprised of rising seniors who take a year off school to travel the world and perform Their alumni include composer Cole Porter former Senator Prescott Bush and many other Yale luminaries

Sherrod said Monday that he spent weeks making what was an extremely tough choice a f te r be ing tapped to be a ldquoWhiff rdquo a commitment that begins in August ldquoThis is supposed to be THE year and you want to play with your guysrdquo he said But the Whiffenpoofs is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunityrdquo

Yale Coach James Jones acknowledges being a little disappointed with the decision Sherrod started 14 games last season and averaged almost seven points and more than four rebounds per game as a junior But even he had to know when Whiffs call you answer - AP

SPONTANEITY RETURNS TO NASSAU MID-ISLAND Kudos and an honorary pitch pipe to Vinnie Colonna and Maurice Debar for spark plugging the opportunity to ring a few chords after hours on Tuesdays This kind of singing goes back to the roots of barbershop harmony long before the birth of our society It started in the deep South some time in the 19th century There were no printed arrangements no rules of any kind but wherever men congregate they harmonize whether itrsquos coal miners in Wales foresters in Bavaria or the peat bogs of Ireland

Not surpr i s ing ly the harmonies tha t originated in this country have their origins in African music Jim Henry the director of Ambassadors of Harmony earned his PhD with a thesis on this subject These are harmonies that come naturally to the ear and they flourished in this country In the early years of the 20th century there were several professional quartets touring the country singing barbershop harmony In 1938 as we all know a group of men got together for an evening of harmonizing and their gathering got the attention of a reporter who filed a story with the Associated Press In those days newspaper editors were always looking for little tidbits to fill out their news columns and so the AP report appeared in newspapers all over the country and our society was born by the responses

Now we have contests with rules printed arrangements and we sing on risers but the basics havenrsquot changed itrsquos still ear singing where we tune our voices to blend chords Now

we learn our parts but therersquos a practice called woodshedding where we donrsquot stick to a predetermined arrangement but just use our ears to tell us to sing a note thatrsquos somewhere in the chord For instance last Tuesday (May 6th) the gang sang ldquoWhen Irsquom 64rdquo which Irsquod never sung as tenor so I woodshedded it and it must have worked because the chords were all in tune

This kind of singing doesnrsquot replace the more structured program we have but like quartetting it adds an extra dimension and itrsquos just plain fun Any number can play Give it a whirl I think yoursquoll enjoy it Irsquoll trade an hour of sleep for an hour of ringing chords any time

We should all be grateful for the likes of Jon Ayers in our s o c i e t y I n t h e f o r e g o i n g article Jon has managed to pinpoint an ingredient that our

chapter has been missing for far too long That ingredient is spontaneous singing W h e t h e r i t w a s c o n s c i o u s l y o r unconsciously i t matters not Vinnie Colonna and Maurice Debar created the kind of spontaneity our chapter has lacked for far too many years

For many years as editor of our monthly bulletin I have espoused spontaneous singing in several of my editorials with barely a tepid response I touted tag singing as the purest form of singing to motivate us to sing our best even going so far as to establish a corner in Winthrop Hall with signs on the wall urging the guys to come sing tags The response was no better

I remember a t tending in terchapter meetings with the Western Suffolk Chapter serving as host chapter in the town hall in Babylon The moment you entered the room there were at least one two sometimes even more quartets octets any number you could choose singing away to their heartsrsquo content This continued into the intermission and then after the meeting was over It seemed like the guys couldrsquot get enough of a good thing

Spontaneous singing puts the fun back into our hobby Hobbies are supposed to be fun I am reminded of the Fullerton California Chapterrsquos boasting and rightly so how they were the ldquoNumber Funrdquo chapter in the Society From reading their monthly newsletter Barbershop Clippinrsquos (Don Derler PublisherEditor) each issue exudes enthusiasm and fun with an average

of 15 contributors per edition Their joy knows no bounds This includes a Friday Harmony for Lunch Bunch which meets at around 1130 am weekly at Giovannirsquos Pizza See blow the front page of one of their bulletins to see the fun they are having

We Nassau Mid- Is landers applaud Vinnie and Maurice for restoring the motivation to sing for fun and enjoyment even after a strenuous 2frac12 hour rehearsal thus putting more fun into our Tuesday nights If 1030 in the evening is too late for some people perhaps the Board would consider starting chapter meetings all year round at 730 pm instead of 8 We manage to accomplish this earlier start time leading up to the annual show Why not always

Big Apple Chorus Captures Gold in Northern Division CompetitionThe Manhattan Chapter put 34 men on the

risers at the Northern Division of the Mid-Atlantic District Chorus Finals in Scranton Pennsylvania on Saturday May 2 2014 and came away with the gold medal ably assisted b y o u r o w n M a u r i c e D e b a r a n d B i l l Grieshaber (See article on page 7)

The Five Towns Collegersquos Long Island Sound Chorus won the silver with a score 23 points behind (936 to 913) Third place a awarded to the Montclair New Jerseyrsquos Chorusrsquos Dapper Dans of Harmony

In all nine choruses entered the competition the other chapters represented including the Hunterdon County New Jersey Chapter the AllentownBethlehem Pennsylvania Chapter the Sussex County New Jersey Chapter the Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania Chapter the Teaneck New Jersey Chapter and the Morris County Chapter New Jersey Chapter

A few weeks ago I remember a baseball player who had been in a terrible slump got a crucial ninth inning hit and won a ball game for his team The next day when he was asked how great it felt to have made such an important contribution his response was That was yesterday We have another game to play today

As a golfer I know the importance of putting what has happened for good or ill behind you and looking ahead to what comes next When driving a car an occasional glance at the rear view mirror is helpful but you better keep your main attention on the road ahead

We had a wonderful year with multiple sing outs our Carnegie Hall experience and a terrific Spring show Unfortunately the bottom line fell short of our expectations but all that is history What we need to do now is get ready for next year

The people who put together this years show are all agreeable to offer help and guidance to their successors but doing these jobs for a number of years theyve done more than their share in keeping our chapter healthy They need a break and we need people to step up and take over

First and foremost we need a show chairman for next year We also need someone to put together the show journal A ticket chairman and a script writer to work with the show chairman are also needed

While were looking ahead we plan to go to the Division contest again next year It s currently scheduled for June 5 and 6 but the venue is yet to be de termined I t s a lmost cer ta in ly going to be somewhere in Pennsylvania and those who go will be expected to pay their own meals and lodging Its not too soon to plan ahead
