The Whole World in Your Hands

Hands are amazing appendages. Often they go beyond the call of duty by extending help and care to loved ones all around us. And the tools that human hands can invent is outstanding. This month’s tidbit is about one of those outstanding tools. I just entered into the land of high tech by upgrading my old iPhone 4 to the new iPhone 6 plus. And it is a handful! As a people-watcher, I am amazed at how there is a phone in nearly everyone’s hand, mine included. With eyes locked onto our phones’ screens, we have been justifiably labeled the ‘sight and sound’ generation. And we love having the world at our fingertips. What does this have to do with bowling? We lost our most recent unemployment claim. It was the only one we lost out of the last 10. We will certainly appeal. Unless we know we can't win, we request rulings for all unemployment claims. We try to keep our unemployment rate at a manageable level. It is a controllable expense that can only be controlled by diligent employment practices. Ignoring these claims will cost you thousands to the bottom line. No one likes to discharge an employee but sometimes you're left with no choice.

However, one of the aspects of letting people go is that they may file for unemployment benefits and if successful, your unemployment taxes will go up. Here are a few suggestions that may help you better contest and win unemployment claims of terminated employees: 1. Discharge sooner rather than later. Anyone can make a hiring mistake. If it becomes obvious that a new worker does not have the ability to perform the job, don't put it off. Failing to act in a timely manner may be interpreted down the road as accepting the low level of performance. 2. Document, document, document. Keep 'written' records whenever an employee is warned or counseled about their behavior or job performance. Even verbal warnings need to be documented in writing and should include the basic facts surrounding the situation. If possible, have another manager observe counseling sessions. This could be important later if the worker gives a different version of the meeting in an unemployment claim hearing. 3. Try to obtain the worker's signature on a written warning. If they refuse, have another manager sign the notice as "Witnessed by (name) on (date)." Have the employee explain, in their handwriting, on the back of the document, why they chose not to sign. This will serve as proof they were notified of the problem. 4. Treat everyone the same. Failing to reprimand your best workers for rule violations can weaken your case. You must be able to show that your behavior and performance standards are consistently enforced for the state unemployment people to take your work rules seriously. It is your responsibility to show there has been a pattern of unacceptable behavior. You must also document that you have tried to correct this behavior on several occasions through training and progressive discipline policies. Unemployment taxes are already high enough. Don't risk having your tax bills go even higher by making it harder to justify legitimate employment terminations. Fight back. It's worth it. Tony

Executive Director’s Report

We have heard a lot of great feedback that it was an enjoyable day. Good food, great networking and the helicopter drop were a lot of fun. All together, a good time was had by all. For those who could not make it, Kelly Bednar did a strong presentation on BPAA Bowling Management School. BCSC is bringing this school to Southern California in the spring of 2016. Members will be able to design a curriculum that fits their needs, so you want to be on the look out for a survey that we will soon be sending to all of you in regard to the BPAA Bowling Management School. This is a great opportunity! We also want to thank our sponsor, Glenn Hartshorn of New Center Consulting, for stepping up and sponsoring $2500 of the bowling management school fee, making if more affordable for people to attend and learn. As the year winds down to a close, we have a lot to reflect on. Our Secretary/ Treasurer, Gary Forman announced that the BCSC is financially healthy, our memberships are strong, and our partnerships are growing. As we prepare for the upcoming holidays, I just want to wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving. Scott

First things first, I want to send out a big thank you to all proprietors, managers, partners and industry leaders who attended BCSC’s 33rd Annual Golf Tournament and Annual Dinner and meeting on October 28th.

PBA delivers 24/7 tournament coverage and puts it all in the palm of your hands!

Tom Clark, CEO

What’s in your hands?

As a teen, Tom Clark dreamed of being a probowler. When he got to college, he played on the University of Syracuse bowling team. That’s when he came to terms with the reality that his talents lay elsewhere. As Tom puts it, “you have to have a certain level of talent to be a professional bowler, which I did not have.“ So, as a lover of the sport he wrote about it, primarily covering events for his college newspaper. When he graduated, Tom launched his own magazine, Syracuse Sporting Times. After three years, he folded his magazine and went on to write for USA Today where he covered sports, including the world of bowling. In addition to writing, Tom’s talents and gifts include reaching out to the next generation of bowling fans, and Xtra Frame is key to that. As a kid, Tom fell in love with the sport. He explains, “At that time, it was impossible to watch events unless you went to them. Today, you can view events all day long.” Right now, the US Open is currently running in Milwaukee. Xtra Frame subscribers can watch live streaming along with archives of tournaments. The PBA offers a plethora of events to a generation that are comfortable watching content on their phone This revolution was set in motion when former Microsoft executives Chris Peters, Rob Glaser and Mike Slade purchased the PBA and moved its headquarters to Seattle. It was a matter of time before the PBA would be impacted by the burgeoning technology surrounding it. Peters, Glaser and Slade had a vision that was ahead of its time. They wanted to make bowling a digital sport, which could be watched on a computer.

At the dawn of the 21st century, people were just being introduced to the idea that their computers would be a new way to view television content. According to Tom “In the beginning, Peters, Glaser and Slade were doing stuff with pro-bowling that no one was doing. . . “ Over the past five years the PBA has ramped it up; Xtra Frame it is now a reliable product that can meet the demands of a public that is far more comfortable with watching on-line and on their mobile devices. That’s what Xtra Frame is all about.

Currently, there are 2 channels offering live streaming on Xtra Frame. The PBA can now broadcast from two locations, and viewers can switch between both channels. There can be as many as 270 bowlers participating in various tournaments, viewers can watch each bowler compete if they choose.

With eight thousand subscribers and counting, Tom acknowledges “It’s great that so many people who are fans will pay. On the other hand, 800k watch their shows on average.” Taking into consideration their ratings for live streaming on two channels, tournaments, archived events, and 24/7 availability of content, for Tom, “It translates to 20 million viewers who watch bowling on a regular bases, it is proof that there is potential for growth.” He continues to elaborate on how “Xtra Frame has placed a lot of emphases on improving content to such an extent, where it can offer thousands of hours of coverage – there is always something on all year long.”

An example is PBA 50. It is an exciting tournament, because it is 10 straight weeks of wall-to-wall coverage. The PBA plans on doing the same thing for this summer’s all women’s tournament events; again, providing coverage from start to finish.

As for ESPN, Tom realizes that everyone equates the PBA with that show. The ESPN TV schedule starts December 17th and runs through to April 2016. However, what fans need to know is that Xtra Frame offers the best of bowling every day!

Now, we can’t talk technology without offering something to our hard core fanboys. The PBA Bowling Challenge is a gaming apt for both Android and IOS. There have been 15 million downloads of the game already, with more to come. This is an awesome time for our industry. As Tom puts it, “with the PBA in your hands, you can watch the action live or you can play the game – basically bringing the PBA wherever you are!”

Live from the PBA, the Bowling Channel – that is Xtra Frame! Let the games begin!

Dave’s goal is to continue to increase the number of subscribers. He explains that a lot of people who are fans of the sport, do not know what Xtra Frame is. His approach to getting the word out is through relationships with associations, and BCSC is at the top on the list. “It’s about telling bowling fans about this product and how much of the sport is covered by Xtra Frame.” One of their first accomplishments was having the Xtra Frame service assessable on mobile devices. They successfully made the move three years ago when they made Xtra Frame available on iPad, iPhone, Android and every Tablet on the market. It is a perfect fit for millennials. And all these devises are included in Xtra Frame’s subscription package. The cost is less than eight dollars a month! For bowling fans on the go, who prefer to use their mobile devises, the medium is the message.

Dave shares “What people need to understand is that what you see on ESPN is a culmination of 20 events during the year. What Xtra Frame gives you all the events that lead up to the major tournaments. . . Right now we are live streaming the US Open. What people may not be able to watch live, within 24 hours of coverage, the event is archived and available just as if you’ve recorded the show on your own DVR “ Tournaments are automatically recorded and archived so viewers can watch whatever they want when it’s most convenient for them. Live or archived coverage, Xtra Frame offers content you can’t find anywhere else. Dave wants fans to know that the quality of the content is excellent. This is important for true bowling fans who care about the professional aspect of the sport and/or follow a favorite player. With two channels streaming live events at the same time, Dave would like to see Xtra Frame get to the level that when people walk into a bowling center and a pro shop, they get to see live streaming on the monitors in those businesses. He believes that they are truly moving in that direction, they have even added new tools to make Xtra Frame more user-friendly. Bottom line, they do and are continuing to push the envelope on content and coverage. So, stay tuned! According to Dave, “Changes are in the wind with good things to come.”

Dave Schroder VP of Marketing Dave Schroder has been with the PBA since 1993. He started as a media director, then moved on to director of PR, then on to TV services director, now he is the VP of media marketing. All together, Dave has been with the PBA for 20 years. Dave notes that Xtra Frame is a critical communication arm and is a big part of the network. Basically, he is in charge of all areas of communications that relate to TV produc-tion and Xtra Frame. In regard to Xtra Frame, Dave is an overseer. He handles the logistics and marketing of events and works under Tom Clark.

Rolltech Announces Groundbreaking "Action Bowling" Network for Real-World Player Competition and Cash Winnings

"If youve ever thought you could bowl better than other league bowlers around the country, this is your chance to prove it and win money at the same time," said Rolltech CEO Rich Belsky. "Action Bowling is a new, advanced technology where players can put their real-world skills to the test and take home cash." > The revolutionary Action Bowling platform is simple and user-friendly. To play, bowlers can add Action Bowling from inside the Rolltech app, deposit funds and then choose the contest they would like to enter. After bowling their normal league games, players submit their scores to the contest they entered and snap a photo of their league recap sheet to begin score verification. The photo must clearly display date, center name, lane, position, player name, scores and signatures. All scores pass through multiple verification layers to ensure accuracy. > If a players total pinfall exceeds that of other Action Bowlers for an event, the player wins money. Payout structure varies per contest and offers instant cash payouts. There is no waiting until the end of league play to collect winnings; payments are processed immediately following withdrawal. Rolltech guarantees security of player funds. Account balances are held in a segregated account and not used for operational expenses. > Rolltech Action Bowling will be available initially to players in the United States, with plans to roll out the platform internationally. Further expansion plans include certified events, partner net-works, in addition to leagues and more venues. > Rolltech creates connections between bowlers, enabling them to track their games and lifetime stats, analyze their performance, earn performance points and redemptions, and challenge and compete with others worldwide, including Rolltech-affiliated professionals Jason Belmonte, Bill ONeill, and Mike Fagan. > Rolltech is available for download on the App Store or Google Play.
