In 2006, the BU41 Fantasy Football League began its operations with four teams: Minnesota Huskies, Jamaican Jerks, Chocolate

Moose, and Thunder Cats. Under the original format, each team was allowed one QB, two RBs, TEs, and WRs, one D, and

one K. Several rule-changes and a series of aggressive expansions later, the BFL now exits as a two-conference league with eight members. 2015 will be the league’s 10th season and

we look forward to many more years to come!

new names new looks

BERGCITYPENGUINS Under new ownership in 2014, the Llamas struggled to reverse their losing ways. 2015 brings a change in location, a change in name, and hopefully a change in luck. Introducing the Berg City Penguins!

LANAILEATHERBACKS With their co-owner adopting full-ownership of the team, the Lizards turned Hounds sought to keep their championship charm. Falling short of that goal in 2014, the Lanai Leatherbacks look to start a new streak.

REBRANDING THE LEAGUE

In 2014, the BU41 expanded for the second time in 3 seasons going from 6 to 8 league members. The old league moniker “BU41” was an extension of the original 4 teams and was in need of a rebranding. Thus, 2015 will see the rebirth as the league as the “BFL” and will coincide the league’s 10th anniversary. All 8 members received a rebrand along with the new league shield.

Page 9: BFL 2015

BFL Yearbook 9

BFL LEAGUE SHIELD The new name is displayed boldly at the center of the new league shield. Maintaining the versatile red-blue-white color scheme, the new shield features 4 prominent red-stripes representing the original 4 league members and 6 stars representing the second era of league expansion.

CONFERENCE SHIELDS The league introduced conferences for the first time in 2014, leaving the 2015 rebrand as the perfect opportunity to introduce conference shields. Each shield features the league color scheme and reflect the flags of their respective host nations. The 6 stars of the league shield are reflected in both shields, with the European shield adopting an 8 point star representing the new total of league members.

ECCENTRICFALCONS The 2014 expansion franchise retained its moniker and adopted a silver-purple scheme.

NORTHERNGENTLEMEN The Gents adopt a uniquely european identity in addition to a gold-black color scheme.

CHOCOLATEMOOSE The original 4 member retained its classic nickname and adopted a purple-tan color scheme.

MINNESOTAHUSKIES Original-Four member Minnesota keeps its championship moniker and red-white color scheme in this modernized look.

THUNDERINGHERD 2015 league champions updated their logo while maintaining their classic green-athletic gold color scheme.

NEWCASTLEKNIGHTS Final original-four member Newcastle adopts a navy-red color scheme and also symbolism that reflects its unique nature as an euro-american franchise.

Balancing the schedule

2014 saw a new series of challenges for the league schedule. For the first time, the league had an unbalanced schedule with 8 teams, 15 games, and 2 conferences. The solution was to have each league member meet twice (home & away). This allowed the league to introduce rivalries for the first time, with each league member meeting their rivals three times to decide who gets their respective rivalry trophy.

MOOSE vs. KNIGHTS After a 2-1 spit in the series last year, the original-four members look to continue duking out their longstanding rivalry and add Bør to their respective trophy-cases.

Quarterbacks, Quarterbacks, QUARTERBACKS!! In 2014, six out of the top-ten league scorers were quarterbacks including the league’s top-three. The position runs even deeper, with fourteen of the top-twenty scorers playing the QB position. With only three RBs and three WRs in the top 20, look for the QB position to last deep into the draft.

WHATTOWATCH

ONTHERISE ONTHEFALLDEREK CARR, QBCarr has new weapons in Crabtree and Cooper and looks for a strong sophomore season.

RUSSELL WILSON, QBThe already dangerous Wilson adds top TE Graham to his arsenal.

EDDY LACY, RBThird-year man Lacy had a huge sophomore season and looks primed for stardom.

LeVEON BELL, RBDespite his top-back talent, Bell will miss a quarter of the season due to suspension. Draft him late.

PEYTON MANNING, QBManning ages another year, loses his top TE, and has a new run-heavy system. Look for a down-year.

CALVIN JOHNSON, WRAt 30 years old, Johnson has not played a full season in three years. High risk-reward player in fast-paced offense.

RUSSELL WILSON, QB SEAHAWKS

Despite already achieving top-ten league scorer status, Wilson looks to be even more dangerous in 2015. With more consistent WR play and the addition of Jimmy Graham at TE, Wilson should be primed for a top-five finish and MVP season.

Runningbacks

MATT FORTE, Bears RBMighty Matt has been the model of consistency notching 5 straight top 3 RB seasons. With Fox in town, look for Forte to be the Bears’ main man.

McCoy had a down year playing for a coach that underutilized his skills. Now in Buffalo under run-heavy Rex Ryan, the workhorse back is sure to be the star of the offense. If the offense can find a consistent QB to man the helm, it’ll be an Allstar year for the former league MVP.

ODELL BECKHAM JR., WR GIANTS

Beckham Jr. was a break-out star in a deep rookie class of receivers. Under the Giants new pass-first offense, Beckham finished 7th in WR scoring. With a year under his belt and a bevy of weapons to support him, look for Beckham to rise to stardom in 2015.

Player Spotlight

JORDAN CAMERON, TE DOLPHINS

After a surprising 2013 where he lead all TEs in PPG average, Cameron struggled with injuries and inconsistent QB play in 2014. The new South Beach scenery and new teammate Tannehill should evoke a return to his pro-bowl form in 2015.

J.J. WATT, Texans DEKilla-Watt was out for blood in 2014 and had an MVP caliber season. He leads the still stout Texans D in a division that features two lackluster offenses in Tennessee and Jacksonville.

2015 Draft preview

For its first 6 seasons, the BU41 practiced the traditional method of drafting, with the previous season’s last-place team drafting 1st overall and the league-champion drafting last. Year after year, however, this proved to be an advantageous arrangement for the teams drafting at the end of the snake-style draft as they’d get the 4th and 5th best overall players (with four teams) or the 6th and 7th best players (with six t e a m s ) . T h e solution? Make it random.

Starting in 2010, the l e a g u e a d o p t e d a randomized snake-style draft with the draft order being determined in the summer months before the August draft. This helped ensure that the league champions would not have a continuous advantage over the other franchises. The expansion to 8 league-members has a lso reduced the appeal for owning

late-order picks and has lead to a more balanced approach for teams to attempt to fill-out their rosters throughout the draft.

The strategy remains the same regardless of the order or number of league-members: draft your guy before the next team

can. For most teams, this means reaching early

f o r p l a y e r s o r attempting to pre-empt a run on position players before the elite are g o n e . F o r e x a m p l e , t h e

sha l low poo l o f talent at TE lead the

eventual champion Herd to draft Graham as their

first-overall pick. With elite QB talent (but overall depth at the position) the teams at the top of the draft just might opt to draft an RB or TE and bank and grabbing a serviceable starter at QB in the later rounds. Look for some interesting selections in the early rounds of the 2015 draft.

Depth at QB may lead to some surprising selections in the

draft’s first round

STAR POWER Everyone expects their starters at each position to be stars, but with 8 league members, there aren’t enough studs to go around. Just how many stars are there anyway? The average QB starter (top 8) scored just under 22 PPG in 2014. Of those starters, only 3 scored above the league average for QBs. If a “star” is any player that scores above the league average for a starter at their position, then there are only 18 stars to be had (see right). Who are the stars?

Position Breakdown

BFL Yearbook 38

#1 - Aaron Rodgers, QB Packers The only competition to being selected first overall is last season’s MVP Andrew Luck. Despite the depth at the QB position, it will be hard for the Falcons to pass on the potential league-leading scorer. Look for the Falcons to follow conventional strategy and go for the best player first

overall in 2015.

2015 Mock draft

#2 - Eddie Lacy, RB Packers With abundant depth at the QB position, look for the Huskies to attempt to grab a top-flight runner with the second overall

spot. Rodgers’ ground-mate was a consistent performer in 2014 and looks primed for stardom in 2015.

#3 - Matt Forte, RB Bears The third overall pick holds the potential to be the most interesting pick in the draft: the Gents could easily go QB, RB, or TE with their selection. Whatever they decide will set the tone for the rest of the round. With John Fox at the helm and inconsistent QB play in front of him, Forte is a

lock to have another big year. The Gents will grab him here.

#4 - Marshawn Lynch, RB Seahawks The Knights have always adhered to the boldest draft strategies with

their selections, but conventional wisdom should rule the day with the 4th overall pick. With a thin RB position, the Knights will likely grab one

of the remaining elite here. Lynch has been a consistent star and has come up big in the playoffs the past few years. He goes here.

#5 - LeVeon Bell, RB Steelers With three top RBs gone, the Moose will likely try and land one of the

last elite runners with their first pick. Despite his early-season suspension, Bell is primed for another huge year playing in the fast-paced Steelers offense. DeMarco Murray or Jamaal Charles will also be in play

for the Purple Pride.

#6 - Andrew Luck, QB Colts Last year’s league MVP falls to sixth overall due to the depth at the

position. With the top four RBs out of play, the Herd may also look to grab the first WR (Beckham Jr., Brown) with this pick. Look for the Herd

to solidify their QB position by taking the young signal caller here and make a play for a RB as the draft snakes around.

#7 - Antonio Brown, WR Steelers Antonio Bryant is a PPR stud and has being the league’s leading WR the past 2 seasons. With the top QBs and RBs off of the board, the ‘Backs should take the high-flyer with this pick and start filling out their roster

when the draft snakes back to them.

#8 - Rob Gronkowski, TE Patriots With the first back-to-back picks of the draft, the Penguins will likely try to grab two elite players at other positions before the get snapped-up as the snake-draft rolls on. Gronk is the run-away #1 TE in the draft and a consistent scoring threat. The ‘Guins will then either grab RB (Peterson,

Murray) or WR (Thomas, Nelson) a the top of the second round.
