    ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are Present in the Blessed Sacrament.

I love You above all things and I desire You in my soul.

Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually

into my heart. As though You were already there, I embrace You and unite myself wholly to You; permit not that I

should ever be separated from You.

    Amen.

    Together we welcome:

    CARTER REED LOVELACE

Who was baptized into our Faith & Family. Congratulations to the Parents & Godparents!

    Please remember members of our

parish who are in nursing homes, the homebound, the sick and their

    caregivers in your prayers.

May God’s mercy shine on them.

    BLESS MY RESOLUTIONS IN 2021

Lord Bless my resolutions and promises in 2021

Lord, remind me of my truest values and deepest desires.

Help me to live in goodness that comes from doing what YOU want me to do

Help me to put aside anxiety about the future and regret of the past so that I might

live in peace with YOU now, one day at a time AMEN.

THE SIGN OF THE CROSS At the beginning of our prayer, we make the sign of the cross togeth-er. This sign, simple and powerful, operates on many levels. We trace the sign of the cross over our bodies, re-minding ourselves that the cross of Christ has become our source of resurrection, life, and grace. With this sign, we also profess our faith in the Trini-ty: the presider does not say “in the names,” but “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Ho-ly Spirit”—three persons, one God. The sign of the cross is also a baptismal reminder, for every sign of the cross echoes the words spoken over us at our bap-tism, which marked our entry into the saving mystery of Christ. This many-layered sign is also our primary sign of blessing: the cross is traced over people, plac-es, and things upon which we ask God to impart di-vine benediction. In blessing ourselves with the sign of the cross at the beginning of Mass, we acknowledge the mystery that has gathered us together: that Christ, the crucified and risen One, is living, and that we are members of his Body. Our response, our Amen, is our yes to all this, our first profession of faith.

Today we are celebrating the baptism of Jesus. Sometimes it is hard to understand why Jesus, the sinless one, came to John for baptism. In my reading I have come across several possi-ble answers to this question. Let me share a few of them with you today.

    1) Some of the early Church Fathers said Jesus went into the waters of the Jordan, not to be made holy, but to make the water holy so that all the waters of the world would become life giving through the Sacrament of baptism. 2) Another possibility was to show us what bap-tism would do, that his baptism would bring the Spirit down upon us and we would become God’s beloved children. 3) Inauguration is on everyone’s mind. Perhaps Jesus’ baptism was his official inauguration as he began the work the Father had given him. He was ready to proclaim the good news for those who turned their hearts to God. The Father and the Spirit put their approval on him and would guide him in his ministry. 4) Perhaps Jesus went to be baptized as an ex-ample to us. To show us that we need to be baptized in order to become God’s sons and daughters. Just before Jesus ascended into heaven, he sent his apostles to continue his work with the words: “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son, and the Ho-ly Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have com-manded you. And I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Baptism must have been so very important to the Lord. We should thank God for the new life he gives us in baptism, the first of our Sacraments. All you who are thirsty, come to the water! — Isaiah 55:1

DEACON TIM’S BOOK & MOVIE REVIEW

Proverbs is a very popular book in the Old Testament because it contains sound advice on living the right way. In addition, since it contains 31 chapters, I like to recommend to people that they read a chapter each day, to match the

day of the month. For example, if it is the 10th day of the month, then read the 10th Chapter of Proverbs. If it is the 12th day of the month, then read the 12th Chapter of Proverbs. The book "Proverbs: Douay Rheims Bible" is a paperback book that has all 31 Chapters of Proverbs, with an excellent foreword by Fr. Mark Goring. If you don't know who he is, look him up on YouTube. He has daily inspirational videos that are usually very good. As for the foreword that he wrote for this book, I especially like the one paragraph where he says, "This volume of Proverbs is meant to be a booklet that gets not only read and prayed, but also marked up with underlining, circles, check marks, stars, notes and whatever other markings will help you assimilate the Sacred text. I'm hoping read-ers will feast on this rich text and will leave deeply satis-fied.” In addition to this foreword and all 31 chapters of Proverbs, this book also has a number of important pray-ers that Catholics should pray often. On the last page of the book, it has "Final Exam When We Die". This refer-ences Matthew 25:31-46, and the author adds "It seems as though Jesus is revealing to us the questions we will be asked when we come before the Judgment seat of God. Try to do each one of these things in the list below at least once this year." What an excellent suggestion! A New Year's resolution that is related to our Salvation. Because of this, the excellent advice of Proverbs and even the way that the words on the pages make it easy to read and mark up, I enthusiastically give this book Five Beards out of Five Beards. I encourage you to either purchase this inexpensive book, or at the least to read a chapter from Proverbs each day in your own Bible. The more that you pray, the more that you read God's Word, the more God will take over and change your life. For the better! Deacon Tim Live Jesus in our hearts... Forever!
