My Inbox….

What a year 2015 has been and it’s not over yet! December is filled with lots of activities as our schools and community groups wind-up for the year and everyone takes the chance to catch up for Christmas celebrations.

Congratulations to the UBAS for another successful Show Day and to the Country Music Club on their recent award. These are just two examples of the fantastic results that can be achieved by our voluntary community groups. Another is featured on pages 28 and 29 with a pictorial representation of the activities that our St John Ambulance volunteers have been involved with during the year.

Thank you to our loyal readers and advertising businesses. Your support of the Gazette is appreciated and it gives me such a buzz to receive positive feedback about the paper that YOU all help to make so special.

I wish you well for the Christmas and New Year period. Enjoy the festivities and a break. Please stay safe and let’s look forward to another big year in 2016.

Cheers, Jodi

Member for Warren Blackwood Terry Redman has congratulated the Country Music Club of Boyup Brook on winning the Perth Airport Events and Tourism Award category at the prestigious 2015 Regional Achievement and Community Awards.

Category winners have each received a $2000 bank account from the Commonwealth Bank. As Regional Development Minister, Mr Redman is the proud patron of the awards, which were presented in front of almost 400 guests in Perth.

“It was particularly pleasing to see the Country Music Club of Boyup Brook recognised for the outstanding contribution it makes to both the local community and the region in terms of hosting magnificent social events with associated economic benefits,” he said.

“The club started with 600 music lovers 30 years ago, and is now attracting more than 15,000 people to its annual Country Music Festival.” The festival caters for all ages and demographics and features concerts, a ute and truck muster, a carnival, workshops and an art exhibition.

Mr Redman praised the tremendous community involvement inspired by the club for events it hosts and coordinates. “In a community of only 1500, the club is supported by 60 local organisations and more than 250 volunteers,” he said. “This community spirit is a real credit to Boyup Brook and is an example of how local events foster social cohesion, cultural identity and belonging.”

Councillor’s Corner I am not one for promises, they can be broken. I am one for listening and doing what I can. My whole working life has been about customer service, and residents are customers.

Another part of my life was spent in the Defence Forces, walking around town with its beautiful sights and wonderful smells. Our way of life is worth defending to the nay-sayers. To the Shire workers that make this possible – thank you. Having seen a lot of brown land, I can honestly say we do live in a wonderful part of the Country.

Having a facelift in preparation for your 100th birthday celebration is not something you hear of every day. But that is exactly what has just happened in Kulikup.

The Kulikup Hall looked resplendent when the ‘old dame’ welcomed 140 people to an event to mark its centenary on November 8.

Representatives of many of Kulikup’s earliest pioneers attended the celebrations. Historic names including Chambers, Fairbrass, Stewart, Torrie, Jilley, Staniforth-Smith, Hendry and Wardle (just to name a few), came together to remember old times and celebrate the warmth and support the small rural community has offered so many.

Some shared stories of cricket, dances and bands, school days, tennis, CWA, amateur night concerts, badminton, the annual ‘Christmas Tree’ (where one year 100 children attended), church services and Sunday school in Kulikup.

All spoke with pride and fondness for a community which, although now greatly reduced in size, continues to thrive.

The hall’s facelift is evidence of how the community spirit lives on. The ‘cosmetic surgeon’ was one of the town’s few remaining residents, ‘Tiny’ Patterson. Hall centenary committee member, Roz Fairbrass, told the crowded hall of a timely meeting she had with Tiny, earlier this year.

“We were having a cuppa one day when Tiny sat back and told me that he thought it was high time the old dame had a facelift,” Roz said. “I gasped and thought it was a bit rude of him to say it to my face,” she laughed, “but then he clarified things and told me he was talking about the Kulikup Hall.”

Soon after, Tiny set to work, spending many hours painting and repairing the old building. During the speeches at the centenary event, Roz Fairbrass announced Tiny’s many hours of work had earned him honorary status and presented ‘The Mayor of Kulikup’ with a symbolic key to the door.

Among those celebrating the long life of the old hall was the grandson of the man who, in 1915, built the community hall. Des O’Connell’s grandfather, Alfred Whittaker, built the hall after local community demand for a place to hold dances.

Des, now of Duranillin, talked proudly of his grandfather’s skill as a builder, and regards an old box, filled with many of Alfred’s

construction tools, as one of his most treasured possessions.

An interesting story of the hall’s construction was that it defied normal construction practice in that the hall’s floor was the first thing to be built. It seems the pre-war residents of Kulikup were very keen to get on with their dancing.

For the centenary celebrations, the Staniforth-Smith family did an excellent display to commemorate the Kulikup Races, a notable and memorable chapter in the district’s history. Annual race meetings were held in early January between 1915 and 1953.

The racetrack, now overgrown and near forgotten, was on the western side of the township.

The Kulikup Hall centenary drew people from across Australia. Keith Hendry made the trip from Hervey Bay to attend the good, old-fashioned ‘catch-up’ session.

Merle Brown was another special guest. Author of ‘Christina Stewart – My Story’, Merle travelled from Perth for the celebration to tell of her childhood memories in Kulikup.

Her book was written from the memoirs of her mother, Christina Stewart – a member of one of Kulikup’s earliest farming families.

The Boyup Brook Working Horse Club would like to offer their deepest sympathy to the family of Ken Brand, who passed away all to suddenly on the 30th of October. The passing of Ken has hit our little club hard. Ken was always there to lend a hand, sit and chat or offer sound advice. He was an essential member to our club, often organising and doing things for us just because.. Future club days will not be the same without you Ken. You will be greatly missed by us all.

On behalf of my family I wish to thank everyone for their support, cards and kind words at the passing of Dad, Arnold Bode. Our community is very special and our gratitude is deep.

LETTER TO THE COMMUNITY

To the Boyup Brook local and surrounding community, My name is Cory Ryan Burke. For those who do not know me, I am currently incarcerated in Bunbury Regional Prison. I am writing this letter to apologise to all those I have affected and offended with my shameful and inexcusable actions and my direct neglect of the social behaviour that is required in living in a community. I am deeply and sincerely sorry and I apologise to all. I feel that in my time of incarceration, although hard but necessary, it has given me the opportunity to take a good hard look at myself and has given me the chance, and the help and tools, to turn my life around for the better of myself, my family and for you, the community. I now understand the full nature and effects my crimes have had on the community and my loved ones. I would like the community to know that I am 100 percent committed to succeeding in my rehabilitation and to becoming a better person. I hope the community can find it within themselves to accept my apology so I can put some closure on my past lifestyle and bad behaviour. Kind regards and my sincerest apologies, Cory Burke

Remembrance Day

“On this day, at this time each year, we join in solemn, silent reflection and remember the tragedy of World War I and the ultimate sacrifice made by the men and women who served there,” said Colin Hales, Boyup Brook RSL Sub Branch President as he addressed the small crowd who gathered for the Boyup Brook Remembrance Day service on November 11.

Mr Hales also spoke of the men and women of the Australian Defence Force who have served their country willingly and unconditionally in many battles since the Great War and encouraged all to acknowledge their service and sacrifice.

Bill Gordon recited a poem ‘Remember the Waltzing’ written by Jim Haynes and led the Prayer of Remembrance, with wreath laying, the Last Post and flag raising also part of the service.

Fishing Competition

A fun, family friendly atmosphere enveloped the Redfin fishing competition organised by the Blackwood Basin Group (BBG).

Entrants came from far and wide including Busselton and Margaret River to catch these pests that do so much damage to native aquatic fauna.

The event has tremendous potential to impact pest fish numbers and future events could focus on the Greenbushes area or spread throughout the South West.

In total sixteen people entered and seven Redfin were caught, so the fish weren’t exactly biting on the day.

“A number of people paid for licences specifically for the event and we are sure to see these people heading out to the waterways of the SW to catch even more pest fish,” said Joby Rand, Blackwood Bas in G r o u p , P r o j e c t Manager.

Teachers Shine at BBDHS

As part of the WA Education Awards 2015 each public school community was asked to acknowledge the staff, leaders and support staff who shine at their school. Students, parents and members of the community who submitted names were able to print out a certificate of acknowledgement to present to them.

There was a huge response with over 710 people recognised by their school communities.

Twelve staff members from the Boyup Brook District High School received recognition. They teach a range of different years and subjects, from Primary to Secondary and each teacher can teach a selection of very different subjects.

“Staff at Boyup Brook District High School are talented, dedicated people who continually strive to improve their skills and knowledge in order to support students in reaching their individual potential,” said Principal, Anne Klaassen. “They regularly go above and beyond what is expected of an educator to enable students to achieve success.’

Welcome Performance for Seniors

On Wednesday 18 November the Boyup Brook District High School primary Choir and Vocal Ensemble had the pleasure of performing some of their favourite songs for the Home and Community Care organisation (HACC) seniors.

The students have had a busy year preparing and performing many of their songs to a variety of audiences. The HACC group loved listening to the students who sang beautifully under the guidance of Mrs Renee Knapp. The guests’ favourite Christmas song “Ho Ho Ho Oi Oi Oi” was even requested for an encore.

The performance was followed by a shared morning tea where students were then able to mingle and share stories with the seniors. The seniors were impressed with both the manners and maturity shown by the students.

“The performance continues BBDHS’s commitment to maintaining strong connections to the community of Boyup Brook,” said Deputy Principal, Mr Rob Reynolds. “The Choir and Vocal Ensemble will continue their practice and preparation for the upcoming Town Christmas and Graduation Ceremony.”

Farewell to HACC Coordinators Long term Coordinators of the local Home and Community Care (HACC) group, Barbara Treloar and Nicki Jones have shared their final Christmas lunch with their beloved clients and fellow staff.

Barbara has been involved with HACC for 27 years and is looking forward to retirement. Barbara was presented with a handmade quilt to which former and current clients and staff all contributed .

Nicki leaves the organisation to work alongside husband Kane in their courier business after 14 years. Nicki’s farewell present was a ‘survival pack’ for her trips in the van.

Wasn’t it good? It’s almost sad that we have to wait for another 12 months for the next Show!!

The Committee has met and already changes are planned – how’s that for forward thinking?

The briefest summary tells the following story: The day was glorious The children’s exhibits were up although the High School

numbers were down but the display was superb – well done children and staff

Shearing had an increase in novices so that is good for the industry and the Speed Shears went well into the evening for everyone’s entertainment

Cattle were fantastic – congratulations to the Thompson family – and thanks to all the participants of the Junior Judging

Flower entries were down but given the wonderful rose displays in everyone’s gardens due to the hot weather preceding the Show, it was not surprising

Poultry numbers were very good with the Breed Ribbon being awarded to McKendrick Burke and for the first time, the Best Bird of Show was awarded to a Game Bird, bred by Peter Strike

Horses numbers were up markedly and all the Ring Events were conducted very professionally with Show Jumping as an added bonus- spectators loved it

Entertainment – could have kept everyone occupied all day! Wonderful to have the big rides (they’ll be back next year) and Captain Creekbed had a real following all day. There were some very decorative umbrellas and the hand waxing was popular as well as the Obstacle Course. If you missed the Dog High Jump you missed a spectacular performance. Sheaf Tossing was fun with the local girls winning and Vince Gareffa and the sausage making competition was a draw card

The Light Horse Brigade was splendid. They had road delays getting here and were thrust into an immediate display but rose to the occasion and were immaculately turned out. Very interesting and contributed to the Society’s recognition of the Gallipoli Centenary beautifully

Boyup Shows Off Numbers attending were down according to the gate tickets

however, as our volunteer gate keepers don’t man the gate all day, it is apparent that quite a few people get in for free! In that instance, you could always pay at the office – your payment contributes to the ability of the Committee to provide the entertainment you desire

The Fashion on the Field was fantastic! All the local ladies, especially, dressed for the occasion and the fascinators were magnificent; Melbourne Cup met its match!! Congratulations Fleur Mead and Peter Harvey as the Best Dressed and also to Emilie Abbiss for the Best Head Wear. Thanks to Nicole Reilly for all the organising

The President and Committee wish to thank everyone who contributed to making the Show such a success - volunteers are invaluable.

As a way of thanking all the contributors to the District Display at the Royal Show, the S.W. Group will have a get-together at the Bull and Bush Tavern in Boyanup on December 6th. Please R.S.V.P. to Betty Knapp if you wish to attend.

The next meeting of the Society will be the A.G.M. on 17th February and President Tom Oversby has indicated that he will be stepping down, likewise our Secretary. Do please consider joining this happy bunch.

The annual Christmas Party organised by the Dinninup Fire Brigade will be held at the Show Grounds on Saturday 19th December. Everyone is welcome but Father Christmas likes the children best! Do bring salad and sweets – meat will be supplied.

Wow Factor at Rodeo

Some hats went high in jubilation, some hats were thrown on the ground in disappointment and some just blew off as the cowboys and cowgirls took on all the action of bucking bulls, speeding horses and grappling with steers. This was the 14th Harvey Dickson’s Rodeo and it didn’t disappoint.

A capacity crowd was there to view this annual event as competitors competed fiercely for the WA Zone Finals as part of the Australian Professional Rodeo Association’s (APRA) circuit.

Racing around the barrels, the cowgirls and their horses displayed speed and agility as did the steer wrestlers. With their determination and courage, the bucking horse and bull riding competitors were definitely a wow factor for the crowd.

The Harvey Dickson rodeo is unique with its giant cowboy and girl overlooking the sunken arena, bordered by huge log seating giving the crowd easy viewing and a sense of being part of the action.

First time spectator from Secret Harbour, Charlene Austin said, “Being so close to the animals and the action made it all the more exciting. With three little girls we found it very family friendly – the excitement of watching the animals, plenty of room for kids to play and just a great atmosphere all round.”

Getting Crafty

Some of our members helped out at during the first Friday of the school holiday programme at the CRC and helped the children make finger puppets. This morning event was thoroughly en-joyed by both the children and those craft hut members who helped with this activity. Thank you to those who were able to put in the time and effort.

Our craft hut fundraiser which we were going to hold on October 31st was postponed due to many of us being extra busy trying to finish things for show day and others being involved with the Blackwood Marathon and several other reasons. However, we will still run our raffle in the near future.

December coming up means many lunches and final of the year events. We will be taking our stall to the community Christmas event, so hope to see many of you there. A Christmas Craft get together is to be held at the Bridgetown Arts and craft centre on December 3rd and a number of our members are looking forward to attending this activity along with members from Nannup and Manjimup craft groups.

Cake Decorating will continue to operate for anyone interested on Tuesdays from 1:30 at the craft hut.

A BIG congratulations to all of the craft group members who took out prizes at the local show.

Finally, but not least, Happy Christmas to the community and if you are having holidays enjoy and have a safe one.

From all the craft group members, Margaret Morton (Secretary)

St Vincent de Paul

Last year a total of fifteen Christmas Hampers were distributed by St Vincent de Paul in Boyup Brook. Thanks to an ecumenical group of

ladies and men representing St Vincent de Paul in Boyup Brook, low income families were treated to food hampers with gifts for the children in each family, taking the pressure off those who provide for the households who received them.

“Boyup Brook Vinnies” has been supported throughout the year by Boyup Brook IGA and St Mary’s School Students. These extra donations have assisted greatly with emergency food hampers throughout the year.

Their assistance allows our community of Boyup Brook to actively participate in assisting those less fortunate within the local population.

Both groups of people have donated non perishable foods during the year to be included in food hampers for those in need.

This year we also thank the ladies from the Boyup Brook Art and Craft Society, commonly known as the Craft Hut. These ladies have made and donated small universal use bags to be filled with personal items for Christmas.

Many thanks and Christmas blessings to all who have supported us in 2015.

If you need assistance with a food hamper or household bills, call St Vincent de Paul. Phone 9761 2596.

Did you know that is costs $30,000 and takes two years to train a Guide Dog puppy?

The Western Australian Community Resource Network embarked on a State-wide project in July to raise funds for Guide Dogs WA and VisAbility WA who rely on community support to provide the Guide Dog program to vision impaired people across WA.

As part of the CRC Guide Dog Challenge, Community Resource Centres have been conducting a number of activities and initiatives to enable regional communities to learn about how Guide Dogs are sourced and trained for their visually impaired owners, whilst attracting donations.

One such initiative involves two plastic donation dogs, Gannup the Guide Dog and his cousin Gannupette, travelling across the state Red Dog style, hitching lifts and using connections through regional Western Australia to visit as many CRCs as possible before mid-December.

Gannup has been travelling around the north of the state and is currently in the Mid West, with Gannupette starting her southern journey in Boyup Brook, spending a very busy day at the Dinninup Show. She also spent time at the Tennis Club’s Opening Day and was ‘well fed’ by members. Gannupette took the opportunity to have photos at the Music Park, Visitor Centre, with the town’s statues and by the Blackwood River which were posted on the pair’s Facebook page – www.facebook.com/GannuptheGuideDog. You can follow their adventures around the State using the following hashtags, #CRCGuideDog, #GannuptheGuideDog #Gannupette.

Indi Reid had fun feeding Gannupette with funds that Indi and her friends Imy Mead, Maddie Ritson and Odessa Gilshenen raised selling homemade lemonade, cupcakes and coffee at the junior hockey grand final.

CRC Manager, Jodi Nield said, “Thank you to the Boyup Brook community for your support of this project. Almost $650 has been raised from our community and donations are still welcome.”

Visit crc.everydayhero.com/au/boyup-brook-crc to donate online, or call into the CRC.

Anne, Andrew and Harris Thompson’s Venturon Charolais is a continuing success story. With their bull, Venturon Keystone they took out top spots in the interbreed cattle competition at the 2015 IGA Perth Royal Show. The 860kg, 19 month old bull was named as Interbreed Junior Champion Bull and Supreme Interbreed Junior Beef Bull.

Along with their Venturon Charolais stud, Anne and Andrew Thompson are owners and managers of IGA Boyup Brook. Each IGA store is uniquely independent and caters to its local community and customers. The Thompsons are well-known in the local community and have grown a name for themselves with the beef available exclusively at IGA Boyup Brook coming from their co-owned farm, Venturon Charolais. IGA supermarkets are part of the local community and IGA Boyup Brook has contributed to over $15 million IGA retailers have raised for local charities including, Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, Variety WA and Breast Cancer Care WA.

Anne, Andrew and Harris Thompson established Venturon Charolais in 1994 and currently run 100 purebred females and 300 commercial females on their property at Dinninup.

They have successfully exhibited at the Perth Royal Show since 2008 with three Interbreeds, four Junior Champion Charolais, two reserve Junior and three Reserve Senior Champion ribbons. Their success continued having won the progeny group, Breeders group of three, 2012 Interbreed Group of Three

Heifers, second Interbreed Junior All Breeds Bull 2011 and have also been most successful exhibitor in this short time.

“A highlight for us is a Charolais x Angus steer winning the Reserve Grand Champion Carcase in 2012, at the 2013 Perth Royal we were placed third overall in the Carcase competition with another Charolais x Angus steer who scored 91.6 points,” said Andrew. “2015 saw Venturon Keystone as the All Breeds Beef Junior Bull Champion as well as the Supreme Champion Charolais Exhibit at IGA Perth Royal Show.”

Their focus is to continually improve the herd by introducing new sires through their AI program and constantly use Charolais bulls in their commercial herd. All stud animals are breedplan recorded and traits are observed and monitored for low birth weight and good growth.

“We attended the 2015 Canadian Charolais Technical conference and secured some exciting new genetics for Venturon Charolais with the purchase of Australian Semen Rights, with LVH Fairfield Charolais stud of Queensland of the top priced Canadian sire, (recently sold for $155,000CAD) Sparrows Kingston,” said Andrew. “We were also fortunate to be offered the exclusive West Australian Semen Rights, of Sparrow’s herd sire, Winn Manns Scaggs together with Palgrove Charolais of Queensland, and Silverstream Charolais of New Zealand.”

Substitutes for ‘Robber’ Plants

Congratulations to those people who have chosen to eliminate Tagasaste from their gardens or any other of the ‘robbers’ identified in this series. The following species are suitable substitutes in combination.

Agonis flexuosa is a good tree for screening. Small areas of this tree grow naturally within our Shire. It is recommended as a shade tree, has a weeping look, does not drop limbs, is long lived and grass will grow underneath.

Melaleuca densa or Melaleuca huegellii Both are rapid growers and planted closely make a good hedge.

Some watering through summer of all three species will encourage rapid growth.

Boyup Brook Pioneers’ Museum

Farewell Life Member Arnold Coming to Boyup Brook 12 years ago I had meet a few people. Being a bowler I decided to give the club a go. Who was the first person I met? Yes, Arnold Bode.

After a few weeks and meeting a few more members around town it was suggested I join the veteran car club with my old Jag and who did I meet? Yes, Arnold Bode. Having met Grant Wardle who suggested I come along to the museum, one of the first members I met was yes, Arnold Bode. The constant leadership and community spirit he exhibited to all members will forever stick in my mind.

I learned of his charter role starting at the railway station in 1990 and of the transfer to the Lodge when it came available in 1994. His life will remain with us in the museum.

Garden Club Cuttings

The last visit for the year was to Greenbushes and indeed a highlight for us all.

We visited the Blackwood Basin Group’s Priority Bittern & Waterbird Biodiversity Enhancement Project. Joby Rand, Project Officer and Chairman, Dr Per Christensen met us and gave us all a complete overview of the project from the beginning till current day.

Beginning four years ago with the assistance of Talison Lithium mine, Commonwealth Government Funding, Greenbushes Shire and many, many hours of voluntary labour whether in machinery, funding or labour has helped the project to this stage. Thousands of reeds and plants have been placed around the lake and feral weed and animal control is also a large part of the project.

Having spent an hour at the site we drove back to Greenbushes to the community Officer. She then gave us a fascinating talk on native bees, which we discovered there are 102 species of.

A walk around the garden followed which has a small orchard, wicking beds of various sizes, frog pond, children’s area and revegetation of a Shire garden. We thank all three of them for an informative fascinating morning.

A walk across the road took us to Tasty Edibles for a delicious Christmas Lunch which all enjoyed. The plant raffle was won by Claire Diggins.

Our next meeting will be in February 2016 at Lance and Margaret Hester’s garden ‘Norlup’. Details will be in the January Gazette.

Merry Christmas Everyone.

We are proud to offer GP Management Plans for patients with Chronic Health conditions such as Heart Disease, Diabetes,

Asthma, Arthritis

Why have a management plan?

Access services to improve your health, such as Dietician, Diabetes Educator, Physiotherapy, Podiatrist

and more.

Ask us if a Management Plan is right for you.

What is a Chronic Disease? Chronic disease is a long-lasting condition that has persistent effects, for example depression, heart disease, diabetes, asthma, arthritis, low back pain, high blood pressure, cancer, etc.

Chronic diseases are the leading cause of illness, disability and death in Australia, accounting for up to 90% of all deaths. Many people have more than 1 chronic illness or condition at the same time.

What is a GP Management Plan & Team Care Arrangement? Chronic disease is addressed by the Australian government through a wide range of programmes to support treatment and management. One of these programmes is called the Chronic Disease Management GP Services on the Medicare Benefits Schedule. GP Managements Plans, Team Care Arrangements and their Reviews enable GPs to plan and coordinate the health care of patients with chronic medical conditions, including patients with these conditions who require multidisciplinary, team-based care from a GP and at least two other health or care providers.

A chronic disease management plan is basically a plan of action in which you agree upon management goals with your GP. A Team Care Arrangement will enable your GP to collaborate with other care providers involved in your treatment for example physiotherapists, podiatrists, psychologist, dietician, audiologist, etc. Medicare rebates are available for a maximum of five allied health services per patient each calendar year.

If you have one or multiple chronic diseases you may be eligible for a GP Management Plan and Team care Arrangement. You can contact the Boyup Brook Medical Services on 9765 1026 for an appointment with one of our GP’s and our Practice Nurse Glenda Moroni.

“CHRISTMAS DELIGHTS!”

Christmas is coming and I’m getting fat –

Too many parties and that’s a fact!

Cream-puffs, sausage-rolls, fruit salad, ice-cream –

To be slim and dainty is a distant dream –

Come New Year I fear, I’ll just have to diet

Or there could be a riot.

Easy to swear, but I do declare

It’s not the first time I tried it!

So gorging must cease, or I’ll be obese

And full of life’s distresses,

Having to let out all of my dresses!

And I sure have a lot of these!

So before it’s too late, take half off your plate

And deny that large appetite –

Just be agreed to take good heed

And your waist-line could be alright!

Project Success

The Blackwood Basin Group’s (BBG) Waterbird Project open day was a great success.

Participants enjoyed the bush and dam setting to hear Josh from Koomal Dreaming’s Welcome to Country, didgeridoo performance, and Aboriginal Cultural Experience including a wonderful story on how male emus encourage their young to be independent. New interpretive signage was unveiled by the Hon. Robyn McSweeney MLC which will give visitors better knowledge and understanding of the site.

BBG Chairman Dr Per Christensen gave tips on birdwatching and Bernie Masters discussed how to construct vegetated floating islands to improve water quality and provide bird habitat.

The BBG also announced the winners of its photo competition and handed out prizes to the winners who were present.

This story is written to commemorate the memory of George Harding and to recognise his contribution to the community, and in particular the grain growing industry.

George Harding grew up in Victor Harbour area of South Australia, where grain growing was their main source of income on their own farm. They also did a lot of shared farming.

Being a young man, and wanting to expand the farming enterprise, George had heard of the new land development in Western Australia, so took a trip to the West to check it out. After a number of trips to the West, and looking at farming properties, he brought a property in the West Arthur area in 1957.

By this time he was married with a small daughter, a wife and a widowed mother to look after. After selling the family farm George decided that to shift to the west they would drive overland, and bring what they could loaded on trailers pulled by two tractors.

The venture to farm at Darkan didn’t work out. The same year he purchased the property Park Hills, where his son Nigel now farms at Mayanup. After reselling the Darkan property, George commenced farming Park Hills in earnest.

The first task was to crop every part of arable land. To do this he purchased a 28 run Spring Tyne combine which he used to work up the land, by going over it several times then using it to seed the area.

My first encounter with George was in 1958, when he advertised for a self-motivated farm helper. I answered his call, and we remained close friends until his untimely death in 1977.

The main object in writing this article is to remind people of the effort George put in getting a grain handling facility in Boyup Brook.

In the early stages it was necessary to send grain to Bunbury by rail in bags. Road transport wasn’t permitted, then later bulk transport by rail was introduced. With more farmers growing grain it seemed only logical to have a bulk handling facility locally.

This is when George contacted the Grain Pool members and put the suggestion to them. He even got himself onto the board to push the case even harder.

The board weren’t very enthusiastic but were prepared to give it further consideration. This is when a group of farmers got together to support George and with help of then Minister for Agriculture they were successful in getting a grain handling facility in Boyup Brook.

The varieties of grain at that time were vastly different from the selection we have today and the yields were much less also.

There are a lot of stories I would like to write about George Harding and how he contributed to the community, however I have been unable to contact some people to get their permission to use their name in the article, so have to end this article here for now.

However I can say George was a capable and resourceful man

and no matter how busy he was he would stop whatever he was doing and help anyone, whether it was give advice on seeding rates, type of crop to plant, when hay was ready to cut, should they rework the ground before planting or anything that would assist them to get a good crop.

He was chairman of Mayanup Progress Association. He enjoyed the time he was involved with the Clay Pigeon Club.

To be continued ...

Arnold George Bode was born in Donnybrook on 15 May 1930.

His parents were Harry and Millie Bode. Millie was the eldest daughter of Boyup Brook pioneers George Friar and Caroline Dickson. He had an elder sister Mildred with whom he was very close. The first 2 to 3 years of his life was in Donnybrook until he moved with his parents to the family farm “Coolangatta” at Boyup Brook once the house was built in 1934.

To get to school his mother would walk him and his sister down the paddock to the Boyup Brook and over a footbridge made especially for them by Max & Mick Abel. Max Abel would then take the children including his daughter Leonie and Frank & Betty Palmer to school in his Buick car.

One day on the way home, travelling on the newly constructed gravel road (today the main road from Donnybrook) Max decided to see how fast the car would go. The speedo was showing 60 miles per hour! (that’s equivalent to 96.5 kmph)Those children may have been part of a small few to have experienced such speed in that particular era.

Arnold briefly attended the Narrogin Agricultural School but as the war was in progress he had to come home and help his mother on the farm while his father was away.

In the early 1950's Arnold's income was from trapping rabbits and in the mid 1950's he had a small VW bus and took over the existing school bus feeder route up the Hell's End road, now known as the Boyup Brook Road North. The children were driven to the intersection of the Hell's End and Dininnup Roads where they were transferred to another bigger school bus and taken to school.

In 1958 a young school teacher named Doreen broke down in her car at the gate to “Coolangatta”, he took her to her lodgings and fixed her car. His sister Mildred bought him a badminton racquet to encourage him to make her acquaintance at badminton.

Arnold was a keen rifle shooter and so was Doreen and he did well at it. They were married in January 1959. Together they built a one room building on “Coolangatta” and slept in a caravan under the shelter of the extensive roof.

Carole was born in December 1960 followed by Peter in April 1962.

The new house was built in 1963 and Daniel was born in February 1964. A new Bedford bus was bought in 1963 and Arnold would polish it until you could see your reflection. He sold the school bus route in 1972.

His beloved parents passed away, Millie in 1972 and Harry in 1973. Neighbouring land was purchased in 1974 to allow for expansion and diversity. 1978 was heart breaking when fires fuelled by Cyclone Alby burnt out 75% of the property and years of selective Merino breeding had to be euthanased. Arnold took his one and only trip overseas in 1985, an organised agricultural tour to China, where he had always wanted to go.

Arnold tried to retire to town in the late 1980's but longed for open spaces and eventually in 1991 he and Doreen at the

tender ages of 61 and 62 built a kit home on part of “Coolangatta” and named this 80 acre property “Windy Hill” the name being self explanatory.

Arnold took up playing bowls around the age of 50, he thoroughly enjoyed it and became very good at it. His last game of bowls was in April this year alongside his daughter Carole. Arnold was a founding member of the Boyup Brook Pioneer Museum and loved to re-live his youth as a member of the Warren – Blackwood Car Club in his 1937 Ford truck.

In 2005 due to Doreen’s failing eyesight Arnold and Doreen had a house built in town and moved in.

In 1984 Arnold had been diagnosed with a heart murmur and in 1996 with prostate cancer.

In September 1996 he had a heart operation to replace his faulty valve.

In December 1996 he had his prostate operation. The heart specialist had given the pig valve a life span of 10 years, it was still going strong to the end 19 years later.

He was very conscious of his health and his regular check ups were sure to have enabled him to have the best of health for so long.

Arnold will be remembered for his values, Hard work – Honesty – Family.

In the Christmas story we learn that: (1) God will use people you don’t know to bless you. The wise men weren’t devout Jews or committed Christians, but Persian stargazers. Don’t be selective; you’ll tie God’s hands. Open your heart and you’ll start seeing Him reaching out to you through the most interesting people.

(2) God will take care of your tomorrows. Joseph and Mary would have to leave home and flee to Egypt. What would they live on? Gold, frankincense and myrrh; gifts only the rich can give. When you’re in the will of God He will provide for you. He may do it through your job or the generosity of others, but He will do it. You don’t have to stay up all night worrying, trying to figure out how to make ends meet. The Psalmist said, ‘I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread.’ (Psalm 37:25)

(3) God will override the system and get you the help you need. ‘The star guided them to where the young child should be born.’ In the history of the solar system there had never been anything like it. God moved a star like we move a pawn in a chess game, that’s because He ‘works all things according to the counsel of His will.’ (Ephesians 1:11)

The story reads: ‘When they had come into the stable, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and

worshipped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.’

Quite a story, isn’t it?

Cricket Off to a Shaky Start

Boyup seniors have not made the best start to the 2015/16 season. After beating Pemberton in our first game, we got beaten by Bridgetown. Travelling again for the third week in a row to Manjimup, saw the boys have a win, with Ty Bancroft taking 4/9 of 3.5 overs.

On the road again all the way to Northcliffe, the boys were excited. But unfortunately got rolled for 37 with junior player Patrick Reilly top scoring on 9. Joey Evans, a new recruit, was the best of the bowlers with 3/45 of 6 overs.

Boyup’s first home game for the season, saw Leigh Clark put a lot of hours into preparing the pitch, were we unfortunately got beaten by Dingup. The boys will travel to Bridgetown then onto Manjimup for a big weekend of 20/20 matches, with a fun night of entertainment. Wish them all the best.

Coming games will see Boyup host Forestry at home on December 12 and then Northcliffe the week after, followed by a break for Christmas and New Year.

Boyup’s junior team is doing great. They have successfully beaten Bridgetown, Quokka (Manjimup), and Woylies (Manjimup). Unfortunately they were beaten by Numbats (Manjimup) at home on November 21. All the juniors are training hard each week and improving dramatically. They hosted Bridgetown at home on November 28 and will host the Woylies on December 12, before having a break for Christmas and New Year. Their first game back will be February 6 at home, game starts at 8:30am so feel free come down and watch.

The club is looking at having a Family Fun Day for Australia Day. We will be playing a fun competition, which require teams of six,

this can be made up of wives, children and friends.

So get a team together and register. We will be running a canteen, with plenty of food and drinks available. To register your team
