Dengue Fever

As you may be aware, there has been an outbreak of Dengue Fever in Dar es Salaam and a few cases have now been confirmed in other parts of the country including Arusha

and Moshi. Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection and the infection causes flu-like illness which occasionally develops into a potentially lethal complication called severe Dengue. However more than 99% of all diagnosed and treated patients recover fully. The 3 man delegation will be here for 1 week Good news is that they have seen some promising talents on the 1st day alone - lets hope that this can transpire to something better.

Canapés and Cocktails with the Juilliard School of Performing Arts of New York!

At 6pm on Saturday May 31st, ISMAC will be hosting a function to welcome the performers from the Juilliard School of the Arts for their annual visit to ISMAC. Tickets, inclusive of food/entertainment, are 20,000TSh (available at reception), and a cash bar will be operation. This is an ‘Adults Only’ evening and a rare opportunity to meet the artists.

ISM Graduation Saturday 24 May – private parties

We look forward to the ISM Moshi Campus Diploma graduation on Saturday 24 May. Although the school organises celebrations for the D2 graduation, the students have usually additionally opted to arrange their own private parties off-campus. These are likely to be on 24th May after the official ceremony. These student-organised parties are not school events and we cannot, as a school, take responsibility for them. Invariably, there is alcohol available at these parties and minimal, if any, adult supervision. We are concerned about the inevitable, and potentially serious risks that arise from these situations, particularly for many of the younger students who frequently receive invitations to attend.

Meet “The Juilliards”

Kate Eastman is entering her second year at Juilliard. Regional: Comedy of Errors, Hamlet (HudsonValley Shakespeare Festival). New York: Shakespeare The Dead (Pipeline Theatre Company),Twelfth Night (Smith Street Stage). Juilliard:Henry IV, Part 1, Fifth of July, Gint. TV: "Blue Bloods". Kate works as a teaching artist with the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Education and Outreach Program. This is Kate’s first year as a team member with Art Powers Arusha.

Kyle Weiler is entering his third year at Juilliard as a BFA dance candidate 2016. He has performed the works of Jose Limon, Elliot Feld, Camille A. Brown, and Brian Brooks, Agnes De Mille, and Robert Battle. He has a passion for teaching dance, choreographing, anddirecting, and is involved with performance outreach at school. Recently, he and several of his classmates formed DaretoCreate, a dance collective dedicated to community outreach, which had its inaugural performance tour in Hawaii, Spring of 2014. This is his first summer with the Art Powers Arusha team.

Francesca Carpanini is a 3rd year Drama student at The Juilliard School, hailingfrom Los Angeles. Some of her favorite roles include Yelena Andreyevna in Uncle Vanya, Emily Webb in Our Town, and Penelope Pennywise in Urinetown. She was a SemiFinalist in the 2012 Spotlight Awards in NonClassical Voice. Later this summer, she will be traveling with several other Juilliard students to perform in Minetti as part of the Edinburgh International Festival. This is her second year in Arusha as part of the Art Powers Arusha team.

Chelsea Feltman is a soprano who completed her undergraduate studies at The Juilliard School. She has studied and performed at Tanglewood, Académie International d’Etéin Nice, La Lingua Della Lirica in Novafeltria, Italy, and most recently as Gretel with Opera Nova in San Jose, Costa Rica. Most recently, she sang the works of Del Tredici with Mo. Lowell Liebermann and MACE, and appeared with enCANTA Collective in scenes from Verdi's Falstaff. She is a founding director of The Secret Opera, a NYCbased company devoted to new and socially relevant operatic works. Chelsea is a codirector of Art Powers Arusha, a nonprofit arts empowerment project for children and young adults in Tanzania. Thisis her fourth summer in Arusha.

John Bambery has appeared at Williamstown Theater Festival, Shakespeare Theater Company, Arena Stage, Classic Stage Company, Eugene O'Neill Theater Center, Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, The Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, and Symphony Hall. BFA from the Boston Conservatory, he is an alum of the Moscow Art Theater School, and is currently pursuing an MFA in acting at the Juilliard School. Upcomingproductions include June Moon and The Visit Williamstown Theater Festival.

Violist Hannah Ross received her Masters and Bachelors degrees from The Juilliard School, where she studied with Heidi Castleman, HsinYun Huang, Daniel Panner, and SamuelRhodes. Deeply committed to sharing her joy of music, Hannah is an extremely devoted teacher and teaching artist. While at Juilliard, Hannah was a fellow in the Morse Teaching Artist Fellowship as well as the Gluck Community Service Fellowship. As codirector of Art Powers Arusha, Hannah leads a multidisciplinary team of teaching artists in volunteer intensives in Tanzania. Their goal is to introduce creative and collaborative skills through the performing arts to students in Arusha. This is her fifth year on the Art Powers Arusha team.

Pinocchio comes to ISMAC- May 28th and May 29th

We’re counting down the days!!! Our Primary Performance is happening this Thursday, May 29th. We ask that all students leave the campus at 2.30pm and return at 5.00pm. Exceptions to this are students who have Dutch or Umoja lessons, where the usual expectations for supervision apply. i.e. students need to be supervised by an adult, and should not be on campus unsupervised. We are looking forward to a fabulous show and to the delicious treats that the Parent Association will have for sale before the show. Remember: there is no admission charge, no tickets necessary!

End of Year Reports

Students in the Primary School (EC-P6) will receive their second semester reports on Thursday, June 12th. These are followed by Student Led Conferences on Monday June 16th, when there are no regular classes. Families will receive their invitation, with their conference time, along with the written reports and students Portfolios on the 12th. For Secondary students, Semester 2 reports will be issued on Wednesday June 18th. Please note: reports are sent home in a sealed envelope with the students. If you would prefer to collect your child’s report, please let their class tutor or teacher know. Reports are not available prior to the dates indicated above.

Action in the PYP

As part of their P6 Exhibition, students are expected to take ‘action’ related to their global issue. I am Tom Bareven and for the past seven weeks during Exhibition, I’ve been researching tobaccos effects on the environment. During my research I found out that there’s one day around the world which people are trying to inform others about the effects of tobacco. This has become known as “World No Tobacco Day” and is on the 31st of May. I challenge you as a smoker or a non-smoker, to promote this with your family, friends and others.”

M1 and M2 Drama and Design Technology classes have been busy creating masks and costumes for the upcoming performances of Commedia Dell’Arte; A Pirate Show and the sci-fi comedy; A Place to Live. Don’t miss it, there will be an evening show Thursday, 5 June, time to be announced.

Outdoor Pursuits from Laura Greenwood Last weekend 9 students from ISMAC had a wonderful trip to the summit of Little Meru. The group lucked out with beautiful weather and experienced beautiful scenery every step of the way! The group of students spent their first day walking by buffalo and giraffe to get to the first hut before staying overnight. They then began the second part of their hike, early Saturday morning where they made it to Saddle Hut. After a quick lunch, students began the last leg to reach the summit of Little Meru. Students represented ISMAC very well and had a great experience from start to finish." Language Day in Primary

Rwanda Genocide Symposium: an article by Tara Pierre-Nina (M5)

On the 2nd of May 2014 ISM Arusha hosted a Rwandan Genocide Symposium to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Genocide that occurred over the span of 100 days from April 1994 to mid-July, and resulted in the tragic deaths of up to 800,000 to 1 million people. It allowed various schools, including ISM Arusha and Moshi, St. Constantines, Braeburn, St. Judes and Orkeswa, to come together and acknowledge those who lost their lives in the struggle between two peoples and hear first-hand accounts of the Rwandan Genocide, as we were fortunate enough to have both Ms. Immaculee Nsanzuwera and Mr. Deo Mbuto, survivors of the Genocide, share their stories with us. The attending schools also had the opportunity to learn more about Genocide and what it is from Mr. Anees Ahmed, the Chief of Judicial and Legal affairs for the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and listen to an inspiring speech by guest speaker, Mr. Abubacarr Tambadou. One of the foremost messages communicated through this particular speech was that; it is when people turn a blind eye to the abuse of Human Rights that conflict arises and that it is each individuals responsibility to stand up and act in order to work towards lessening the chances of an event such as the Genocide that occurred in Rwanda, and the other examples of Genocide and violence that have occurred repeatedly throughout history, from happening again. Students then performed activities in inter-school groups before the symposium was brought to a close by Mr. Berkawitz who introduced the idea of ‘Spark-on’ encouraging students to take initiative and perform tasks, no matter how large or small, to make a difference by doing something for a person or people. We are, after all, despite our differences, be they religious, ethical or political, all citizens of the world. Thank you very much to Mr. Zvikomborero Katsande and Mr. Rick Fitzpatrick for taking the time and initiative to organize the symposium… Spark on!
