Isakaya[work in progress] Our brief was to develop a brand identity and interior design scheme for the refurbishment of this Oriental buffet restaurant.. Blending traditional Japanese materials with contemporary elements Paperspace Design created a dramatic, tactile interior scheme that makes food the focus. Our design for the logo features a bold clear font for the name and a hand-painted 'splash of soy sauce' hinting at the food offer and conveying the inclusive, laid-back nature of the restaurant.

PULLMAN HOTEL LONDON

Pullman St. PancrasThis £11m refurbishment project of a 300 bedroom hotel included public areas, bedrooms, suites and conferencing facilities and allowed Accor to re-brand this existing run down Novotel as the first UK Pullman, their prestigious five star brand.

As a key member of a small team my role as senior designer on this project involved, over the course of a year, everything from the initial pitch to space planning, concept design, furniture design and specifications, client presentations and the production of a profile drawing package. I was an important point of contact for the client, architects and contractors.

PULLMAN HOTEL LONDON

The scheme was based around an idea of modern British design with tailoring being a major influence. We also drew inspiration from the aesthetics of classic train travel based on the Pullman name and the proximity of the hotel to Kings Cross St Pancras station. The public areas were dramatically reconfigured and a huge feature wall provided a strong backdrop to the space and linked the reception, bar and restaurant together. A number of operational issues were also addressed such as the lack of breakfast covers and luggage storage. A critical part of the design included a new staircase running up to the first floor which linked the conferencing facilities together over three floors and creating a much more appealing conferencing offer for the hotel to market.

MS CUPCAKE STORE BRIXTON

Ms CupcakeSpecialist vegan bakery Ms Cupcake approached Paperspace Design for help when they were unable to bake enough cakes to satisfy demand. Their problem was they couldn’t work out a way to improve the space they had to enable them to increase production.

Through observation and discussion we developed a new layout that gave them additional layout space for cake decoration, better storage and improved production efficiency. We also came up with some simple solutions to make the shop look tidier and more appealing. As a direct results of Paperspace Design’s involvement Ms Cupcake were able to increase their production significantly which allowed them to move into the wholesale market.

PRIVATE RESIDENCE BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

Private ResidenceThis large, contemporary, new-build house over three floors included six bedrooms, a pool and spa area, cinema room and a wine store. As Lead Designer on this project I was responsible for overseeing the development of the design, the production of drawings and specifications, managing deadlines and maintaining close relationships with the client and architect. My team developed interior layouts, design concepts, specifications and a full set of technical drawings for tender. Our scope covered the selection of colours and materials and the design of bespoke joinery items as well as furniture and lighting layouts and specifications for all rooms in the house.

OLD FIRE STATION BOURNEMOUTH

Old Fire StationResponding to the brief of 'more grime, less glam,' Paperspace Design prepared a new interior scheme for this leading Bournemouth nightclub. The design features exposed concrete and industrial sterling board which contrast with neon acrylic for an edgy, modern aesthetic..

GABRIEL'S VINE

Gabriel's VinePaperspace Design developed a new brand identity and store concept for London based wine retailer Gabriel’s Vine. The design blends traditional elements with exciting, modern aesthetics to portray a contemporary yet well established company.

Page 9: Carriewebbportfolio2012

GABRIEL'S VINE

Light-weight wine racking ensures the wine itself is the real hero and is not overpowered by heavy looking joinery. Bespoke display tables allow certain wines to be featured and break up the expanse so it does not become overwhelming for the customer.

Pushing the limits of the brief Paperspace Design introduced the idea of self service wine dispensers to allow customers to try before they buy as well as a tasting table which provides the opportunity for intimate wine-tasting and pairing events promoting sales and elevating the brand.

“Carrie understood what we wanted very quickly and came back with a concept that reflected our style and message. She looked for creative ways to work with a low budget and gave consideration to our efforts to be ethically and environmentally sustainable. IBIS MULTIPLE LONDON SITES

IbisOur brief was to create a new scheme for three Ibis sites reflecting the brand values of ‘hotels the way you like them’ and ‘the human touch.’ The three very different sites all posed challenges and required research and analysis before designs could be developed. Our proposal offered solutions to various operational issues as well as an interior scheme that offered consistency over the sites whilst giving each hotel it’s own identity suited to it’s situation.

The colours and materials chosen added texture and softness to help create a warm and friendly atmosphere but remained on-brand for Ibis, not moving into the boutique hotel aesthetic. Lighting was a critical part of the scheme to help create intimacy and define areas within the large open plan spaces.

The client wanted to achieve a three-fold increase in food and beverage revenue so our design incorporated a number of elements to help promote the food offer. Because of the service and staffing levels (Ibis is a 3 star brand) we were not able to do this by the display of fresh product so displays were designed to incorporate live stock of non-perishable food, crockery and kitchenware in order to create a gastronomic feel whilst being practical to maintain.

PRIVATE RESIDENCE LONDON

Private ResidenceConcept design and visualisation for this high end residential client. A 6m tall fish tank creates a unique and dramatic focal point for the marble clad basement pool. In the cinema black and white photos mirror the illuminated back bar display and mirror cladding disguises an awkward corner.

AROMA RESTAURANT

Aroma RestaurantA site assessment and discussions with the client revealed a number of operational issues as well as an outdated interior and poor communication of the offer. Paperspace Design created a new concept that whilst retaining the long standing brand values of modern, affordable Chinese dining also elevated the restaurant to a more sophisticated offer in order to attract a wider range of clientele.

Page 15: Carriewebbportfolio2012

AROMA RESTAURANT

Inspiration was taken from the modern chinese city aesthetic and a more dynamic plan layout addresses operational issues as well as creating a dramatic focal point around the theatrical open kitchen. We also developed a new shopfront and sigange design to improve visibility and communicate the offer more effectively and proposed a new external takeaway counter to respond to the trend for street food and the market for ‘grab and go’ at this site.

Flemings Mayfair HotelAs part of a team consisting of structural engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers and quantity surveyors we put together a proposal for the complete refurbishment of all public areas of this prestigious boutique hotel. Our proposal was based around opening up the central areas and creating better visibility of the food and beverage offerings as well as providing additional services such as a business centre and library lounge bar.

OCBC Bank ConceptWorking in conjunction with a Singapore based branding agency we developed this modular interior design scheme as a pitch for the new youth focused division of OCBC Bank. With the emphasis on lifestyle banking in a retail format the plan includes product browsing and interaction and ATMs for self service banking. Our scheme is vibrant and exciting making use of modern technology and innovative materials to convey the cool, high energy image of the bank.

NOVOTEL LONDON WES

TRESTAURA

Novotel London West RestaurantThe brief for this UK flagship hotel was to create a sophisticated interior with a slightly more classic feel than the usual Novotel. Our design for the restaurant features a sweeping curve with banquette seating dividing the upper and lower levels and creating a structure around which to base the layout. Warm, luxurious finishes combine with exciting bespoke lighting and furniture designs to create a five star impression on a four star budget.

NOVOTEL LONDON WEST LOUNGE BAR

Novotel London West Lounge BarIn order to create a dramatic improvement to this space working within the brief of an FF&E refurbishment, emphasis was on good quality but cost effective furniture and an innovative use of materials. For example, existing dividing columns were modernised with bright green glass panel inserts and a laminate 'blackboard' wall was introduced with graphic displays to promote coffee and wine sales. Details such as picture frames to the structural columns helped to create the relaxed but business like atmosphere required for this conference focused venue.

NOVOTEL LONDON WEST COCKTAIL BAR

Novotel London West Cocktail BarOur brief was to create a destination bar within this prestigious hotel. A black floor and ceiling finish along the centre of the space accommodates the bespoke bar with leather pad and the matching seating booths. A variety of seating options provides an intimate feel and allows for larger groups as well as couples. A bespoke feature chandelier running the length of the bar adds glamour. My choice of colours, materials and furniture all enhance the sexy, moody and sophisticated atmosphere.

Novotel EindhovenAs lead designer for this project I was responsible for the complete conceptual design of reception, bar, restaurant and toilet areas from space planning to FF&E specification and visualization. Having presented the concept to the client in the Netherlands and whilst liaising directly with all members of the client team, I developed the design into a full drawing package and continued to support the team whilst the project was onsite.

Novotel London Waterloo BarThe refurbishment of the reception and restaurant areas at this Central London hotel was rewarded by them earning a coveted four star rating; the bar area was the final, high profile, piece to fall into place on this project.

Our design opened up the available space. This allows views between the reception, bar and restaurant, encouraging guests to spend longer in the food and beverage areas. An island bar with bar dining tables on the restaurant side also helps to link the spaces and provide a range of dining options for guests.

This refurbishment saw our client reporting significant uplifts in food and beverage revenues and a change in client profile charictarised by a shift towards more profitable beverages wines and spirits being consumed by a younger and more affluent demographic.

Novotel Amsterdam CityAs Novotel's new European flagship hotel, Novotel Amsterdam City was a prestigious €2M project. Working in a team of five we developed a comprehensive concept and drawing package for the entire ground floor public spaces constituting an area of over 4000sqm and including reception areas, conference spaces, a bar, several restaurants, wellness area and an airline crew lounge.

The overall concept was developed as a team working with the themes of Novotel's new 'Natural Living' campaign. We used a continuous stone feature wall which extends from one end of the space to the other providing a unifying backdrop to the individual area schemes. A base palette of colours and materials was also developed to ensure consistency throughout the space.

We then took a number of areas each and developed individual schemes to compliment the overall concept. I worked on the reception, café and crew lounge areas developing designs for flooring, ceiling details, joinery items and FF&E.

Alisan Restaurant and Bar, WembleyThis prestigious restaurant design project opposite the new Wembley stadium began with the space planning of the large empty unit to include a 200 cover restaurant, a mezzanine bar lounge, a private function room and all back of house areas. As lead designer for the project I was responsible for the concept design, construction drawing package, FF&E specifications, statutory approvals and on-site support. Absence of a main contractor for this million pound project meant that a high level of service and involvement with the client and contractors was necessary.

Document House NewburyThis renovation of an old document store into a modern and sophisticated bar was particularly interesting because of the opportunities and restrictions created by the existing listed building. I was responsible for the conceptual scheme, FF&E specification and implementation of the design. The visual brand identity was also born from the interior design concept I created.
