A Letter from Bishop Andrew Regarding the Flu Season

To all our parishioners:

“As a rather serious strain of influenza spreads throughout the United States this winter, it seems appropriate

at this time to put the following guidelines in place for the wellbeing of our parishioners. Our goal is to help

everyone stay healthy.

Any of our parishioners who are sick are reminded that they are not required to attend Sunday Mass. For their

own health and the health of parish family members, anyone who experiences a sore throat, cough or fever,

or other flue symptoms are encouraged to stay home.

Beginning immediately, parishes are asked to implement to the following procedures during all celebrations of

the Eucharist:

• For the duration of this flue season, we will suspend offering Holy Communion under both Species. The

Precious Blood of the Lord (Chalice) will no longer be distributed during Communion.

• For the duration of this flu season, adaptations should be made to the Sign of Peace which encourage

parishioners to greet one another in a manner that does not involve shaking hands.

• For the duration of this flue season, people should avoid holding hands during the recitation of the Lord’s

Prayer.

• For the duration of this flu season, all ministers of Holy Communion are to wash their hands with an alco-

hol-based anti-bacterial solution, such as Purell, before and after distributing Holy Communion. This re-

quires all churches to provide for this need at the credence table in the sanctuary.

Recognizing that these measures are drastic, we will resume our normative liturgical practices once this pub-

lic health threat has passed. Please properly inform your parishes of these measures, and ask for everyone’s

patience and cooperation in facilitating a healthy environment for our public worship to continue in a responsi-

ble fashion.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend Andrew E. Bellisario, C.M.

Bishop of Juneau”

Family Promise Volunteers Needed!

February 18 - 25

Family Promise continues to host families in Juneau! Our parish will again be responsible for host-ing families during the week of February 18 - 25. We will need volunteers to help with various tasks to serve the families during that week.

Volunteers are needed to prepare meals, set up the area on the Sunday before the families arrive, take down the area the Sunday the families leave, do laundry, and act as hosts each day to stay with families for various activities and overnight. Hosting will take place in shifts. There will be a breakfast shift, dinner shift, evening shift, and an overnight shift each day. At least two volunteers are needed for each shift.

For more information or to volunteer please contact Theresa Zimmerman at 957-6814 or email her at [email protected]. Theresa plans to be available after masses this weekend and next with a sign-up sheet and to answer any of your questions.
