Dear friends,

On behalf of everyone related to IEEEMadras Section, I sincerely thank Mr. H.R.Mohan, Chairman, IEEE Computer Society forhaving organized and conducted manyprogrammes in the field of Computer Engineering

for the benefit of students, academicians and people working in industries.IEEE Computer Society of Madras Section organized a technical lectureon “Open Source Software and Asian Economies” on April 03, 2009 atC-DAC, STPI Facilities Centre, Taramani.

IEEE Women In Engineering (WIE) celebrated “Women’s Day” atISTE Convention Centre on March 08, 2009. In another function, IEEEWIE website was launched by Dr. G.V. Rao, Chairman, IAS Society onApril 06, 2009.

I feel honoured to have inaugurated the National Conference on“Signal and Image Processing” conducted by SMK Fomra Institute ofTechnology, Chennai on March 27, 2009. This programme was co-sponsored by IEEE Madras Section.

I am happy to inform that IEEE Madras Section in associationwith Karunya University is going to organize two Faculty DevelopmentProgrammes on “Intelligent Software Agents for Knowledge Engineering”on April 24 – 25, 2009 and on “Challenges in Information Security” onMay 23 – 24, 2009 at Karunya University, Coimbatore. All the membersof IEEE can make use of this opportunity to enrich their knowledge.

The Execom of IEEE Madras Section has planned to celebrate theoccasion of 125th Anniversary on August 27, 2009 at Chennai (the venuewill be decided in due course of time) with a series of activities as Imentioned in the Newsletter of March 2009. Dr. John Vig, President ofIEEE has given his consent to participate in the IEEE 125th Yearcelebrations at Chennai. I request all the IEEE Student Branch Counsellors,Student Volunteers and other members to reserve this day exclusively forthe celebrations of this memorable event at Chennai.

I would like to inform that IEEE Bangalore Section with help ofIndia Council and R10 is organizing the All India Student BranchCounsellor Congress at Bangalore during July 03 – 04, 2009.

It is heartening to note that the activities at theMadras Section have increased many folds over aperiod. The student branches have become morevibrant and this year is seeing a host of activities atinstitutions which where not reported in the LINKin the recent past.

The Computer Society had organized a CIOMeet on performance excellence through insight and innovation – a timelyone to manage information across all segments and two talks – “BusinessProcess Excellence through BPM and SOA” and “IT Industry atCrossroads” organized along with the Section and TMC, WIE whichwere of current interest and well attended. Brief reports on these activitiesare reported in this issue.

IEEE CS is joining with Rotary Club and Exnora in launching theDigital Literacy Training Programme which aims to empower novice users,youth and women by training them in IT skills which would providethem with an opportunity for their livelihood. It is an ideal activity for allour student branches as the institutions are well equipped to provide thistype of training during weekends with the support of member volunteers.This could also be a corporate social responsibility activity for theinstitutions. Added to this, a no. of open source related activities arebeing planned with CDAC and NRCFOSS who have come out with theBOSS operating system which will bring down the TCO of a desktop by25%. Educating users will be a major task at hand and the IEEE branchescould support and extend assistance. These activities, if done in this125th year of IEEE, we will be fulfilling one of the objectives of IEEE –using technology for societal uplifting.

Presentation on Business Process Excellence through BPM and SOA

A presentation on the topic “BusinessProcess Excellence through BPM and

SOA” by Mr. Sandeep Shisodia, PrincipalConsultant (BPM Practice), Cuecent, BahwanCyberTek, Bangalore was organized jointly bythe IEEE Madras Section, IEEE ComputerSociety Madras Chapter, IEEE TechnologyManagement Council Madras Chapter and theChennai Chapter of the Computer Society ofIndia on 14th Mar 2009.

Dr. S. Salivahanan, Chairman, IEEEMadras Section welcomed the gathering. Mr.K.V. Rupchand, Chairman of TMC introducedM r. Sandeep Sh i sod ia . M r. K . R a mSubramanian, Executive Vice President, BahwanCyberTek gave a brief overview of Cuecent &Bahwan CyberTek and the services offered bythem.

Mr. Sandeep Shisodia, started hispresentation by explaining how BPM helps ITdeliver more successfully the Goal or ‘Intent’driven applications by leveraging existingsystems and architecture, shortening projectcycles with quick-wins, improving scalabilityand flexibility and proper monitoring andmeasurement of the project execution. He added

that a typical BPM has the components such asWorkflow; Integration with existing applications,DBs and DMS; Integration with people; CustomerInterface; Task assignment and tracking andMeasurement, Audit, Reporting and Control. Hehad compared the conventional enterpriseapplications with BPM suites and stated that EAIand Application Infrastructure vendors are nowadopting a BPM over SOA strategy to betteralign the organizational integration needs as BPMquickens the pace of development while reducingrisk of failure. He had then compared the BPMand SOA approaches and demonstrated a typicalBPM over SOA Architecture. Subsequently, Mr.Sandeep Shisodia dealt with Process Modelingin BPM, Business Process Modeling Notation

(BPMN), Enterprise Service Bus (ESB).

At the end of the presentation which wasattended by about 110 professionals, Mr. H.R.Mohan, Chairman, IEEE Computer Society,Madras Chapter presented a memento to thespeaker Mr. Sandeep Shisodia. Mr. Mohanthanked the speaker and Mr. Ashok Anand,CTO, Bahwan CyberTek who had coordinatedin organizing the presentation and instrumentalin supporting the event. Mr. Mohan furtheradded that Cucent and IEEE CS would beorganizing a full fledged workshop on the topicwhich would provide a better understanding ofthe concepts and implementation capabilitiesto the developers.

Talk on IT Industry at Crossroads

A talk on the topic “IT Industry atCrossroads” by Prof. C.R. Muthukrishnan

(popularly known as CRM), Advisor, TataConsultancy Services, Former Director InCharge, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)Madras and Former President of the ComputerSociety of India was organized jointly by theIEEE Madras Section, IEEE Computer SocietyMadras Chapter, IEEE Madras Women InEngineering Affinity Group and the ChennaiChapter of the Computer Society of India on23rd Mar 2009.

Prof. CRM, in his talk, traced the globalmeltdown and attributed that the financial greedand indiscipline was the root cause for theproblem and it started in US and spread across

the globe. As most of our Indian IT companieshad a major dependency on US for projects,this meltdown had affected us also. The auto,manufacturing, banking and financial services,travel and hospitality are the major segmentssuffered due to this problem. Further, thisslowdown across the world had a significantimpact in our educational system as we hadincreased the no. of seats in the colleges in ITand related courses, in order to meet the growingdemand of the manpower needs for the IT &ITES projects. Prof. CRM said that in thecountry, the demand for the local IT projects,value added telecom services, e-commerce andweb related activities are on the increase alongwith the needs for the e-Governance projects

initiated by the government. Also, he said thatmany professional and students are utilizing thisslowdown as an opportunity to go for higherstudies and improve their skills and capabilities.

After Prof. CRM’s talk, the floor wasopen for discussions and views from theparticipants. General Balasubrahmaniam, thefounder Secretary of CSI, Mr. G. Ramachandran,past Vice President of CSI expressed theirconcerns and change in attitudes. Mr. S.Srinivasan, Chairman and Managing Director ofSRA Systems shared his views from the industryperspective. Mr. Mohan, Chairman, IEEEMadras Chapter said that the slowdown in ITsector has provided opportunities in other coreareas and psychological counseling. He addedthat the industries and institutions should comecloser in using open source software to reducethe cost of ownership.

The talk was attended by about 80professionals and students. At the end, GeneralBalasubrahmaniam, presented a memento toProf. CRM. Mr. Mohan, in his vote of thanksthanked Prof. CRM for his consent to step infor Prof. Sadagopan, Director, IIITB who wasto give the talk originally.

ITPED-09: Conference on Innovative Techniques in Power Engineeringand Drives at Velammal Engineering College

The Second One-day National Conferenceon Innovative Techniques in Power

Engineering and drives ITPED ’09 wasorganized by the Department of Electrical andElectronics Engineering, Velammal EngineeringCollege on 20th March, 2009 in association withIEEE Madras Section.

The main objective of the conference isto offer a forum for the exchange of scientificand technical information related to the latesttrends in the field of Power Systems, PowerElectronics and Drives.

A total of 125 papers were received withrepresentations from various collegesnationwide. About 35 papers were short listedfor presentation. A total of 45 delegatesparticipated in the conference. The delegates

included students, research ccholars andteaching faculty from various institutions acrossthe country.

The conference triggered off with theinaugural function presided by Prinicipal Dr. J.Shanmugam and Vice-Principal, Dr. SheilaaHaran. The Guest of Honor, Mr. R.Balakrishnan, Engieering Manager and Head –Engineering Design and Research Centre, ECCDivision, Larsen and Toubro Limitedinaugurated the conference by lighting the kuthuvilakku. He also released the conferenceproceedings along with the Special EditionNewsletter of the Department. Prof. P.Narayana Bhaskar, HOD/EEE and Mr. M. ArunBhaskar, Coordinator, ITPED ’09 joined thedignitaries on dais.

Dr. J. Shanmugam, Principal, VelammalEngineering College delivered the Presidentialaddress. He emphasized on the importance ofPower Engineering field of research andmotivated the delegates to take up jobs inresearch sector.

In his Inaugural address, Mr. R.Balakrishnan stressed upon the need forincreased power generation in India to meet theload demand by the huge population. He also

laid stress on the importance of research in areasof power quality and FACTS and thedevelopment of harmonic free devices.

Four sessions were conducted under threetopics viz., Power Electronics and Drives,Power Systems and Embedded Systems. Dr.K. Shanti Swarup, Professor, IIT Madras,delivered the keynote address on “IntelligentAgents in Transmission Network Protection”.Dr. R. Gabriel Germans, Professor/EEE chairedthe session the Power System Session.

Parallel session on Embedded Systems,chaired by Dr. A. Balaji Ganesh, Professor,TIFAC Core - VEC was also conducted.

Post lunch, Dr. S. S. Dash, Professor,SRM University gave a splendid keynoteaddress on “Soft Computing on ElectricalEngineering”. Two parallel sessions wereconducted; one on Power Systems chaired byDr. P. Chidambaram, Professor, VEC andanother on Power Electronics and Drives chairedby Dr. S. S. Dash.

T h e b r a i n s t o r m i n g Te c h n i c a lExtravaganza came to a banging end with thevaledictory ceremony. Dr. S. S. Dash, Dr. P.Chidambaram, Dr. R. Gabriel Germansdistributed the certificates to the participants.

Workshop on Open Source at RMD Engineering College

A workshop on Open Source with anobjective to motivate the students of

RMK & RMD engineering colleges in opensource software was organized on 16th March2009 at RMD Engineering College with thesupport of IEEE Computer Society andSoftware division of CSI.

Dr. R.M. Suresh, Vice Principal,welcomed the gathering and introduced the chiefguest Mr. H. R. Mohan, Chairman, IEEE CSand Div II on Software of CSI. Mr. Mohan, inhis address stressed the need to go in for opensource and highlighted that OSS is a viablealternative for many applications with lowercost of ownership. He also suggested thatcolleges should adopt nearby small and medium

enterprises and use the students to develop andimplement applications and gain experience inthis process. He added that this approach wouldbe a win-win for both. Dr. K. Sivaram, Principal,presided over the inaugural session.

The morning session was handled by Mr.Amal Mathai from RedHat. He started withthe open source concepts and provided a basicintroduction to Linux operating system and thenintroduced the concept of Virtualization andenlightened the students with the types ofvirtualization and how each type is differentfrom the other. The virtualization theory andits features created an impact in the minds ofthe students.

In the second part of the morning session,Mr. Senthil Kumar from Collabnet Solutionsgave a presentation on Version Control System.He explained the necessity of a version controlsystem and dealt with its types and uses. Healso briefed on the uses of version controlsystems in real time and highlighted on how

these systems can be used to resolve theconflicts.

In the last part of the morning session,Mr. Shivaji of Lynus Academy, presented thereal t ime implementa t ion of JQue ryApplication. He also dealt with a bit of codingstuff using JQuery and how to create a JQueryApplication.

In the post lunch session, there was ademonstration of projects developed usingOpen Source by the members of the FOSS Clubof Jaya Engineering College. The projects thatwere demonstrated include: Tamil SpellChecker, Travel Guide, Online Bill Usage —which aids in limiting the usage of bandwidth inthe internet.

At the end, there was an open discussionsession on Open Source Software in general.Then the participants provided the feedbackon the sessions of the workshop. The workshopattracted many students towards Open Source.

NCVESCOM’09: Second National Conference on VLSI, EmbeddedSystems, Signal Processing and Communication Technologies at AVIT

Veedu Institute of Technology, VinayakaMissions University organized a 2nd NationalConference on VLSI, Embedded Systems andSignal Processing (NCVESCOM’09) during 8-9, April 2009 at Aarupadai Veedu Institute ofTechnology (AVIT), Paiyanoor. The Conferencewas co-sponsored by IEEE Madras Section,IEEE Communications Society, IEEE ComputerSociety, ISTE and IETE Madras Chapter.

Dr. (Mrs.).N. R. Alamelu, Principal,AVIT & Convener of the conference welcomedthe gathering.

Shri. P. Swaminathan, DistinguishedScientist and Director, Electronics andInstrumentation Group IGCAR, Kalpakkaminaugurated the conference. In his inauguraladdress, Mr. Swaminathan explained in detail

on how various technologies relating to theconference are in use at the IGCAR and invitedthe students and faculty to visit the nuclearpower plant and see the technology in action.

Shri. H. R. Mohan, Associate VicePresident (Systems), The Hindu, Chennai &Chairman IEEE Computer Society, MadrasSection released the conference proceedings andaddressed the gathering. In his address, Mr.Mohan spoke about the growing impact of theVLSI, embedded systems, digital signalprocessing and communications technology invarious fields and also highlighted on the IPv6which will facilitate connecting billions of deviceson the Internet and the need to change overfrom IPv4 to IPv6 in the near future. Theseimpact would necessitate further research andexperience sharing.

Thandalam on 25th March 2009. Dr. SureshChander Pal, Chairman, student activity - IEEEMadras Section was the chief guest of thefunction and inaugurated the chapter. Thefunction was started with lighting of thekuthuvilaku by the Chief Guest and otherdignitaries. Prof.D.Lakshmi, Branch counselorwelcomed the gathering.

Thiru.K. N. Ramachandran, Founder &Chairman addressed the gathering. He alsopraised the IEEE Student Branch and theDepartment of EEE for its progress and urgedto maintain the same spirit of motivation infuture. Dr. K. Vijayabhasker Raju, Principal gavethe presidential address. He has emphasizedthe importance of joining IEEE Branch and alsoinsisted the students to participate in variousactivities like seminars, conferences, paperpresentation.

Dr.Suresh Chander Pal released thesouvenir which includes technical articleswritten by IEEE members as well as the studentsof EEE and it was received by the CollegeChairman Thiru K. N. Ramachandran and thePrincipal Dr. K. Vijayabhasker Raju. The collegeTrustee, Tmt. Thilagavathy Ramachandran,Vice-Chairman Mr. R. Rajasekaran, Hon’ySecretary Mr. N. Natarajan and PRO PulavarN.

Rajagopal participated in the function.

Dr.Suresh Chander Pal gave anenlightened speech about the benefits of joiningIEEE. He motivated many students to be a partof the global association. He suggested themembers to form various committees with whichall the members will be able to take part in theactivities of the branch. He called for nominationsfrom students for various committees andappointed the students in-charge for the same.

On the same day, the Student Branchalong with the Dept. of EEE organized an InterDepartment Paper Presentation Contest.Mr. G. Elangovan, HOD/CSE, Mr. S.Ramakrishnan, HOD/IT, Mr.Ponnaiya, HOD/S&H, Ms. Sarojini, AP/ECE were the judges.The judges shared their views and opinions withthe participants on the papers which largelyhelped the presenters to reshape their contentin a right way. Prizes were also given to thestudents.

Technical events at SRM University

The IEEE student branch of SRM University(SRMIEEE) has been conducting a series

of technical events, as part of their annual eventschedule. Spanning over a period of more than amonth, these events conducted aim atdeveloping the technical skills of the students,while widening their perspective of thehappenings around them.

Giving a start to the event calendar wasthe MATLAB/FUZZY LOGIC Workshop,held on the 7 th of March. Having beensuccessfully attended by more than 50 students,this six-hour workshop was presided over bythe IEEE branch councilor, Mr. C. Vaithilinganand co-ordinated by Pushpak (studentmember). The students attended a theorysession, which was followed by hands-on

practical training. While they mainly dealt withpower systems, the interactive and livelysession had them solve the ‘IEEE 14 - bus ModelSimulation’ problem. The comparisons madebetween human intelligence and Fuzzy Logicinspired the students greatly to such extent thatthey planned to form a ‘Fuzzy Logic and Matlab’Group in association with IEEE, which willfunction for future projects and research work.

Another set of events running parallel tothe workshop was the TERZETTO. Keepingto its literal meaning (the power of three), itcomprised of three events: Quiz, Dumb-C andCrossword. co-ordinated by Nishtha Chopraand co-coordinated by P. Meghna, the Quizconsisted of the prelims and the final rounds.Putting their general knowledge to test, six teamsgot down on the arena , out of which, only threewere allowed to move on to the finals. Dividedinto five rounds based on technical knowledgeof different subjects, the Quiz witnessed sheerthrill, excitement and enthusiasm from themember teams. At the end of an enthralling hourand a half, the intellectual team to walk away asthe winners was that of Priyanka Chandra,Ankita Nayak and Trisha.

The second event of Terzetto was theDumb-C, completely based on Electronics. Co-ordinated and hosted by Rajiv Mishra, whilebeing co-coordinated by Teja, this three-roundextravaganza saw six teams on the floor. provingtheir communication skills and the mettle toface technical challenges, the enthusiastic teamof Rashmi, Aparajita Iyer and Prashant Kumaremerged as the winners.

The last event of the series, theCrossword, was co-ordinated by Ratika. Thismind boggling technical puzzle lasted for about50 minutes, during which each of theparticipants took up the challenge of outdoingeach other. The winner of this event was Trisha(1st year).

A workshop on LABVIEW was held onthe 8th of March, coordinated by Himanshu andRahul Guha (IEEE student members). Havingbeen attended by more than 50 people, this 8hour long interactive session dealt withfabrication and simulation software. A series ofvalue added workshops has been scheduled forthe rest of the semester. These workshops, aimat imparting technical knowledge to thestudents, while gearing them up for theprofessional world.

Women’s Day Celebration by EaswariWIE Affinity Group

T he IEEE Student Branch Women inEngineering affinity group of Easwari

Engineering College celebrated the Women’s Dayon 8th March, 2009 at IEEE Madras Section,Kotturpuram.

The chief guest Mrs. Uma Rajaram, HOD/ EEE, Dr. MGR Technical University, Chennaigraced the occasion. The celebrations commencedwith fun-filled games organized by our studentmembers. Later, the chief guest addressed thegathering which highlighted the status of womenin our society.

Mrs. Uma Rajaram, spoke about howmen still have not accepted women in higher

positions. She also brought out the fact that womenare not readily willing to accept the opportunitiesgiven to them, to go higher up in their career,because of their attachment and responsibilitytowards their families. Her solution for this genderbias in the work place was that, only a deservingperson should get the job, the judgment for whichshould be done on the basis of talent and capabilityalone, and not gender. She also elaborated on thesubject of how the society treats men and womendifferently, right from upbringing of children, to thecareer. She concluded by saying that, men andwomen are equal and this thought should prevailin everyone.

Following the speech, the chief guest alongwith Mrs.Ramalatha Marimuthu and Mrs. Vydekiawarded certificates to the student members fortheir participation in the various activities of IEEE.During this session, and those spoke about IEEE’simpact on their student life. The members sharedtheir views on women’s day and some of themexplained about the women role models in their lives.

The celebrations concluded with Mrs.Ramalatha’s review of the major activitiesorganized by the students, and the vote ofthanks by Mrs. Vydeki.

MGA AchievementAward

Mrs. Ramalatha Marimuthu, Chair,Madras IEEE Women in Engineering AffinityGroup and Treasurer, Madras Section hasreceived the MGA Achievement Award forthe year 2008, conferred by IEEE, USA.She was given this award at the Region 10meeting held at Hanoi, Vietnam, where around200 members attended from all the countriesacross the Region. This is a very prestigiousaward, and she is the first Indian woman tobe honored with the award for theoutstanding contributions she has made tonumerous IEEE activities and the exampleshe set in carrying forward the goals andobjectives of the IEEE MGA Board. Thisaward consists of a cash prize of US$250, aplaque and a citation.

ABHIVART’09 at Mepco Schlenk Engineering College

Successful men and women think with a newstreak always. If such persons of high

thinking gather to give a symposium, we wouldget nothing but ABHIVART’09 on 12th Mar2009. The auspicious and blessed is the time ofinauguration by lighting the kuthuvilaku andsinging the prayer song in the presence of thedearly awaited guest, Dr. T. R. Rangaswamy,the honorable Dean (academic), Prof. & Head ofIT department of Crescents College. Hisilluminating lecture on “Intelligent Control”madeevery brain ticking away.

The delegates came from various parts ofTamil Nadu such as Madurai, Chennai andCoimbatore. After much deliberation, they werescreened to attend their final touchstone. Theyhad a warm arrival and given refreshments. Theywere very enthusiastic to start competing in theprograms.

The paper and project presentations wereboth brain busters, the judges being veryquerulous. But they also had hard time inchoosing the winners as every delegate wasuniquely good for the trophy. Being verystringent and judicious, they choose at last thehighly deserved ones.

The program of Circuitrix is the essenceof Elec IQ bringing both inter and intra studentsin throngs to the lab. This session has to beextended to the afternoon also due to the wideresponse it got while the technical paper and

project presentations ended with the morningsession itself. The delegates were treated to arejuvenating meal so as to strengthen theirresolve for the next round of events.

The B-PLAN bought out the managerialskills and was judged by the highly sophisticatedmanagement of Mepco Professor, Dr. G.Balamurugan. This innovative approach was tobe their first step to entrepreneurship. The VirtualShare Marketing (VSM) was the other waygamboling into the path of Dalal Street. Thebalance sheet at the end of ten days of virtualbuying and selling of shares gives out the winner.

Quiz (general) was the cliché but it wasmade zeitgeist by the compeering of our ownIEEE Member Representative, Mr. Srikanth,

the upcoming Quiz Master of MEPCO. Themarketing event was a new approach to Adzapevents. The committee had a different way oftesting the effective buying and selling techniqueof the participant. His personal appeal as theMarketing Executive for the given productswith the audience was discerned.

Seminar on “Careers in the Civil Services” at SSNCE

The IEEE Student Branch of SSN College ofEngineering conducted a seminar on

“Careers in the Civil Services” on 16th March2009. The guest lecture was delivered by Mr.Vivek Harinarain IAS, Executive Director –Industrial Clusters, Marg Ltd. During his tenurewith the Indian Administrative Services, he wasCollector of Tanjore, Chairman and ManagingDirector of Tamil Nadu Cement Corporation,Commissioner of Survey and Settlement,Secretary Information Technology Governmentof Tamil Nadu and Chairman ELCOT.

Prithvin Rajendran, IEEE Student BranchChair compeered the seminar and welcomed thedignitaries and others. Dr. R. Arumugam, HODof EEE Dept., presented a bouquet to Mr. VivekHarinarain. Dr. K. Kasturi, Dean gave thepresidential address.

Mr. Vivek Harinarain started the seminarwith the proverb, “Man cannot discover newoceans unless he has courage to lose sight ofthe shore”. He stressed the need for identifyinga suitable career, which matches the skill sets ofan individual. Unless one persevered and strovefor perfection, one could never achieve one’sgoal.

Mr. Vivek Harinarain in his presentationsaid that the Civil Services examinationconducted by the UPSC has not lost its prestigeand value even amidst the recent popularity ofIT and careers in management. He identified thefact that every year around 4 lakh people applyfor the UPSC exam, which selects to fill around400 vacancies. He highlighted about theexamination procedure and selection process ofthe Civil Services which takes almost a year. Hestressed the fact that it is necessary for eachand every student to imbibe facts from allsources. He advised the students to be like racehorses who have blinkers that restrict the horse’svision so that the race horse would only look atthe finish point. Similarly the students musthave a determined mind and put their full effortin achieving success in the UPSC exam. He listedthe 27 services for which a common examinationis conducted by the Union Public ServiceCommission (UPSC). He also warned the

students to avoid being overconfident as thereis nothing like engineering students have an edgeover the other students. He said that anAgriculture student writing the Agricultureoptional subject will be on the same footingwith an engineering student undertaking the CivilEngineering optional subject. He presented ideasrequired for General Studies preparation andalso suitable methods required to be undertakenwhile preparing for the Main Exam as well asstrategy to face the interview board.

Mr. Vivek Harinarain said that peoplewho are interested in joining the Civil Servicesfor the money should avoid doing so. It is thethrill of the job, which motivates people toperform better and thus overcoming the needfor more money. He concluded his seminar withthe saying, “The real measure of a man’s wealthis how much he would be worth if he lost all hismoney”. The talk was followed by a questionanswer session from the participants, whichnumbered around 300.

After the talk, Dr. R. Arumugam, HODof EEE Dept. presented a memento to Mr. VivekHarinarain. Hari Ganesh, IEEE Student BranchVice-Chair proposed the vote of thanks.

National Workshop on VLSI Systems at SVCE

A two days national workshop on VLSISystems was organized by the Department

of Computer Science and Engineering inassociation with IEEE Madras Section at SriVenkateswara College of Engineering,Sriperumpudur during 13-14, mar 2009.

The workshop was inaugurated by Dr.R. Ramachandran, Principal, Sri VenkateswaraCollege of Engineering, Sriperumpudur.

On 13 th Mar, in the first session Mr.Aravind Vasudevan, Senior Research Trainee,WARFT, Chennai spoke about “Low Power

High Performance Node Architectures: BeyondVLIW”. In the next session Mr. BalajiSubramaniam, Senior Research Trainee,WARFT,Chennai, gave a talk on ‘Network on chip (NOC)for Super Computer on Chip (SCoC)’. The thirdsession was handled by Dr. C. P. Ravikumar,Texas Instruments, Bangalore, who delivered atalk on “Design, Verification, and Test inNanometer Technologies”.

On 14th Mar, Dr. Shankar Balachandran,Assistant Professor, Dept. of CSE, IIT Madras,delivered a lecture on ‘Design Automation forVLSI’. Kunal K. Korgaonkar, (ResearchScholar), CSE Dept, IIT Madras, delivered alecture on ‘Multi-Core Systems andTransac t iona l M e m or y ’ . M r. K . S .Venkataraghavan, Project Consultant, RISE Lab,IIT Madras, Chennai, gave a talk on “Blue –Spec (HDL)”.

The workshop concluded with a lectureon “Digital Design Verification and Testing” byDr V. Kamakoti, Associate Professor, RISE Lab,

Mr. Moncy Thomas, Chief ExecutiveOfficer, INFAACT, Coimbatore conducted aself evaluation exercise on “Self Analysis bySWOC (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities,Challenges) Methodology”.

72 students from various engineeringcolleges participated in this seminar. Theparticipants found the seminar very useful andbeneficial to prepare them for their careerdevelopment. Mrs. T. Shanthi, Mr. J. RamPrabu and Ms. G. Poorani were the coordinatorsof this program.

Revival of the Student Branch at K. S.Rangasamy College of Technology

Though the IEEE student Branch of K.S.Rangasamy College of Technology was

started in the year 1999, the activities could notbe continued for the past 6 years due toadministrative reasons. However, the studentBranch was revived on 4th April 2009 in thepresence of Dr. M. Madheswarn, Chairman,IEEE Electron Devices Chapter, India Section.Various committees such as MembershipDevelopment Programme, Newsletter andWebsite Design were formed. The students of1st year UG and PG participated. The responsefrom the students for the meeting was over-whelming and the proceedings were lively.Many students were also eager to becomemembers.

In the afternoon, a separate session wasconducted by the guest speaker Dr. M.

Madheswaran. He addressed the participantson the benefits of the IEEE student membership.Then, he delivered a talk on “Recent Trends inNano Electronics”. The talk was interactive.The Heads of the Institution, Directors andDeans of various faculties participated in thisprogramme and were very happy about therevival of the IEEE student branch at the college.

V. S. Srinivasa Rao, presented a powerpoint presentation on Energy Saving Luminariesand the recent developments in outdoor lightingand design of mobile and permanent lightingmast towers.

Dr. G. V. Rao also emphasized on theadvantages of joining IEEE organization and ashort film on Industry Applications Societywas shown to the audience. Application formswere distributed to students to enable them tobecome members. Technical brochures andcatalogues were distributed to all theparticipants.

The authors will have the choice tohave their abstracts only/ or full papers published in the conference proceedings. There will be special sessions for presentation of work-in-progressof completed research papers in the research forum exclusively for research-scholars.
