who will you be after four years on this campus?
will you find your identity? or will you seek it out?
will you spend more time in nature or on your iPad?
will you graduate with memories of an internship or excitement for the job it got you?
will a minor in Political Science become a major career move?
will you talk about things or will you do things?
will one of these buildings sport your name in the future?
will your viewpoints expand as much as your music collection?

Not every college makes it a point to learn all of its
students’ first names. Not every college thinks you
should be able to call a professor’s cell phone. Not
every college encourages you to create a club based
on any hobby you have. Not every college gives you
an idyllic campus in the middle of one of the country’s
most vibrant cities. Not every college has professors
who will stay after class for 20 minutes to help students
better understand a lesson. Not every college has its
president’s dogs greet you in her office.
Truth be told, Chestnut Hill College doesn’t want to
be every other college. We’d rather be a school where
every student receives personal attention from faculty.
Where small classes lead to big breakthroughs in your
education. Where we don’t just build résumés, we build
a community.
When you walk through campus as a Chestnut Hill
College student, you’re not just another face in the
crowd. You might be the All-Conference point guard
and the editor of The Griffin. You might be training for
a marathon in between rehearsals for the upcoming
Association of the Performing Arts play. Or you might
be the VP of the Archery Club who also happens to
have the most Instagram followers on campus.
A student should get lost in a book, not a crowd.
At Chestnut Hill College, everyone has an identity. we’ll help you find yours.

Walking around the Chestnut Hill College campus, you
can’t help but feel the history—storied traditions that
still inform everything we do today. Classic architecture
transports you to another time, while hallways seem
to echo with past scholarly discussion. Every pillar and
promenade opens your eyes to what the Sisters of Saint
Joseph’s envisioned almost 90 years ago. Yet it is not
simply an architectural style; within these stone facades,
you’ll uncover a modern and relevant curriculum built on
a classical educational foundation. Over 85 years of tradition have built our philosophy of
holistic education. We’ll work side-by-side with you,
ensuring your education goes beyond the lecture hall,
off the reading list and out of the library. We emphasize
the growth of the whole person not only through a
liberal arts education but through an exciting social life,
a healthy spiritual life and a well-rounded active life.
When you leave Germantown Avenue at graduation,
we’ll have you prepared for not only professional
success, but ready to truly make a difference within
your community.

A laminated student iD card
won’t scratch the surface of your
true identity.
Somewhere between First Year orientation and the time
you flip your graduation cap up in the air, things will
change. You’ll make friends. Discover new interests.
Find new opinions. Engage in new debates. Sample new
cuisines. Learn more about yourself than at any other time
in your life.
At Chestnut Hill College, we encourage you on every
step of your journey from inquisitive First Year student to
confident senior. We don’t believe in pre-cast stereotypes
of who a college student is or should be, like “bro,”
“hipster” or “techie.”
Chestnut Hill students are the editor of The Aurelian
Yearbook and student ambassador for the Admissions
Office, like Cassandra Gutierrez (Class of 2015). They are
the member of multiple honor societies and a volunteer at
the Council for Exceptional Children, like Kate Macomber
(Class of 2014). They are the tennis stars, the Computer
Club members and the service volunteers—and more often
than not, they can’t be summed up in just one “the” label.
They are smart, confident, interesting, spiritual, worldly,
well-rounded and fun people. They come from cities all
around the world. They’re people you want by your side in
the Student Government Association and at movie night
in Fontbonne Hall. Chestnut Hill College has created an
environment that both teaches and fosters this kind of
versatile individuality, giving uniquely passionate students
both a home and a launching pad.
Everything at CHC ties back to our mission: to provide
students with a holistic education in an inclusive Catholic
community marked by academic excellence, shared
responsibility, personal and professional growth, service to
one another, to the global community, and concern for the earth.
We don’t believe in pre-cast stereotypes of who a college student is or should be, like
“bro,” “hipster” or “techie.”

A classroom at Chestnut Hill College isn’t simply a room
with four walls, some desks, a chalkboard and a lecturing
professor. It’s a place where lively discussion takes place.
Where a professor knows every person in the class and
adapts her lecture to suit individual learning styles. Where
knowledge is gained, friendships are formed and even
the occasional global issue is tackled. Yes, our classrooms
have four walls, but there is nothing confining about them.
In fact, we believe that a curriculum should go beyond
the classroom. Students should get out, get involved with
their communities and get wise to the world—and few
students represent that idea better than Kelly Dennis
(Class of 2015). With a combination of book smarts and
street smarts (and a bunch of other smarts we don’t have
time to cover), Kelly shows us that a holistic educational
approach truly means the growth of the whole person.
Kelly studies accounting, minors in Spanish, plays on the
tennis team, participates in campus ministry and even
started a club that helps sponsor education in Uganda.
This holistic approach inspires a passion for learning,
builds a collaborative learning community and creates not
just students of specific majors, but students of life.

We always keep our classes small and intimate, but we
also believe in offering a robust range of opportunities
to help support your learning. It begins with a faculty
that focuses on giving each student dedicated attention;
because there’s no one right way to teach a classroom of
twenty unique students. From there, each aspect of the
Chestnut Hill College experience is designed to help you
reach your academic potential.
Our campus boasts computer labs with the most updated
systems, a state-of-the-art TV studio and even a science
center. You can have the reference desk in our library look
at your paper before you hand it in, then sit down with
your professor afterward to discuss it. No matter your goals
or major, you’ll have every resource at your fingertips—it’s
just up to you to take advantage.

Getting involved truly is a way of life here. Joining an
organization isn’t a résumé booster; it’s an opportunity
to find people with similar interests, learn how to
organize and lead and occasionally have meetings with
free refreshments and a fortress of pizza boxes. What’s
not to love?
There are plenty of existing organizations that you can
join. If you’re into green living, it could be the Earth Club,
or if you’re more into Red and Blue lines, you could
join the Student Government Association. And if your

Getting out of the classroom and into the world is a
lesson that the Sisters of Saint Joseph’s have been
preaching since Chestnut Hill College was founded in
1924. The Sisters were never ones to shy away from
hard work and were known to roll up their sleeves and
help others. This ethos finds its way throughout the
school, as students constantly volunteer for causes near
and dear to their hearts.
Each year, retreats led by Campus Ministry attract those
who seek not just academic, but spiritual reflection and
growth. This group, which welcomes all faiths, also helps
guide students through their time on campus.
Having such a deeply rooted tradition of faith has
helped Chestnut Hill College thrive for over 85 years,
as we have adapted and embraced the challenges of
modern education. In fact, the campus you will enter as
a First Year student will be radically different than the
one you tearfully leave as a senior. Take for example the
land we purchased at nearby Sugarloaf, which nearly
doubled the size of campus. Truly, we are a college on
the rise.
One of the most important classroom lessons is knowing when to abandon the classroom altogether.

Opponents don’t always know what a Griffin is before a game.
Afterward, this is not a problem.
Stepping out of Fournier Hall, you glance down to the
bottom of the hill to see some furious competition. The
softball team turning a double play. The tennis squad
hitting cross-court winners. The soccer team dominat-
ing the goal. Everywhere you look, you know that the
Griffins are serious about their athletics.
With 14 Division II teams, Chestnut Hill College
competes with schools up and down the Eastern
seaboard, battling for conference, regional and national
championships. The basketball teams draw crowds in
Sorgenti Arena and our outdoor teams frustrate op-
ponents on a brand new, fully lit, artificial turf field. A
fitness center features modern equipment and facilities
designed to elevate any Griffin’s athletic ability. In
the last few years, the Chestnut Hill College Athletics
Program has cemented itself as a regional powerhouse
in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, producing
CACC Women’s Soccer Player of the Year Lauren Riff
and National Lacrosse Hall of Fame member and coach
of the men’s team, Brian Dougherty. We produce
student-athletes who are leaders on the field and in the
classroom. Let us know if you’d like to join the surge. With 14 Division II teams, Chestnut Hill College competes with schools up and down the Eastern seaboard, battling for conference, regional and national championships.

Our students are always studious, but when a game
is on they turn in their textbooks for face paint and a

Griffins. When the Griffins basketball squad steps on the
court, nearly the entire campus turns out to yell at the
top of their lungs. But it’s not simply basketball—all of
the sports teams draw their own faithful following
at the games, and the mighty Griffin mascot patrols the
sidelines. Which team will make you lose your voice?
There are also plenty of opportunities for students to
get into the games themselves. With Fairmount Park
surrounding the campus, there are chances to bike, hike,
fish and run. And when the weather is nice on campus,
you’ll always be able to find a game of tennis, basketball,
Ultimate Frisbee, softball or even Quidditch. Just be

At 10 AM, you can be deep in Fairmount Park, enjoying
the solitude offered by a riverside run. Deer and assorted
wildlife are the only creatures in sight. By noon, you can
be in Fishtown, Philadelphia, scouring boutiques for
handmade couture and popping into cafes and hidden
gems for nourishment. It’s a great benefit of our location,
as we truly have the best of both worlds: a quaint, safe,
charming campus on the outskirts of one of America’s
largest cities and cultural epicenters.
Not surprisingly, Chestnut Hill College is in Chestnut
Hill. It’s a unique, historic section of Philadelphia
that seems almost too good to be true: cobblestone
streets, cafes and boutiques, neighbors greeting
neighbors and a whole lot of other activities that will
have you browsing your thesaurus for words that mean
“quaint.” And if that’s not enough, just a short drive or
bus ride away is the shopping paradise of the King of

In 20-some-odd minutes, you can go from our serene campus to the metro-suburban
streets of Manayunk and Conshohocken to the bustling downtown of Philadelphia.
Sure, we all know about the history and the artery-attacking sandwiches, but
Philadelphia is a city that will take all four years of college (and then some) to discover.
There is no such thing as a typical week. You might discover a new unsigned band at
Johnny Brenda’s in Fishtown on a Tuesday. Hit a Phillies game on Wednesday. Hone
your bowling and Big Lebowski quotes at North Bowl lanes on Thursday. Gallery hop in
Old City on First Friday. Discover what bibimbap is at a Korean restaurant on Saturday.
Grab brunch and check out the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Sunday morning
(admission is free before noon). As a student in the Philadelphia area, you’ll be among
students from over 86 other colleges. So you’ll be in good company. It’s all included in
the Chestnut Hill College experience.
Fairmount Park and Chestnut Hill College are intertwined simply because you step off
one and go right into the other. That means unbelievable access to one of the world’s
largest urban parks, which is a sprawling outdoor maze of quiet streams, roaring rivers,
natural wildlife and one particularly rare species: outdoorus loverous, a person who can’t
get enough fresh air. Stroll the park in the fall when the leaves burst with thousands
of colors, engage in an epic snowball fight during the season’s first snowfall or simply
wander around aimlessly on the first beautiful spring day of the year. It’s a year-round
biology lab for our students.

What advice would you offer a future Chestnut Hill
College student?
CHC has what so many larger schools lack: accessibility. You
have brilliant minds down the hall with open doors and chairs.
Embrace it. As a freshman I proposed the College start a
“Muggle” version of Quidditch, and two years later I was
talking about it on ESPN. The best part about the smallness of
CHC is that it can be as big as you want.
