The FMA Informative in meeting DTE Chief Instructor Martin Torres that the DTE Fighting System is the re-sult of a journey that has been traveled for over 40 years beginning with Martin Torres, the Chief Instructor and Founder of the Direct Torres Extreme Fighting System. Chief Instructor Torres has had the opportunity to train with many excellent teachers and martial artists, as well as, the chance to extensively learn, train in and understand multiple disciplines. These disciplines in-clude multiple Filipino Martial Arts, Combat Judo, Jujitsu, Western Wrestling, Western Boxing, Muay Thai (old and new style), Ed Parkers Kenpo Karate and several styles of Kung Fu, including; Wing Chun, White Crane, Lama, Chen Style Tai Chi and Chinese Style Military Combatives. It should be noted that he was blessed to be able to train with many Filipino Martial Artists and Teachers over the years including Rene Latosa and other greats.

DTE Chief Instructor Martin Torres Over the years, Chief Instructor Torres developed his own way of doing things based on his training, his real world experience and the deeper understanding he gained from those experiences. Having the ability to see the deeper meaning behind the general technique and realizing the need to trim the excess from the often elon-gated tactics of many martial arts, he, with the support of his loving wife Cindy, developed the D.T.E. Fight-ing System. In the 20 plus years since the start of the D.T.E. Fighting System, Master Torres has taught Law Enforcement, Military Personnel, Professional Fighters and Civilians, as well as, children. He has also, over the years, coached and cornered multiple winning MMA fighters and Boxers, as well as, often been asked to demonstrate, present, teach and judge at fighting events, martial arts seminars and gatherings in various places around the world. Extreme Directness in Technique, Energy and Positioning are some of the main staples in DTE where Less used effectively is definitely More. As well, Chief Instructor Torres teaches his students that transitioning ranges, rather it be from kicking to empty hands, to the clinch, to grappling, should be done seamlessly with no gaps, putting one into the best position. This, along with the power and speed that is inherently developed in the DTE training will leave little to no opportunity for one’s opponent to counter. It has always been Chief Instructor Torres’ belief that his system should be one that actually shows his students how to effectively defend themselves against a real world assailant that may very well have better skills or health than the student. He also believes that each student is an individual and that it is his job or calling is to help the student to find and bring out his or her personal ability or flavor so that the student can become the best that he or she can be. His motto being… “Turning Students Into Leaders”. Master Torres is based in Arizona and has multiple instructors representing DTE throughout the US, including Arizona, California and North Carolina, as well as, abroad.

About Direct Torres Extreme Martial Arts

Chief Instructor Torres learned from experiences from the school of hard knocks, training with others, since he was 7 years of age. While attending and train-ing in the different arts Torres real-ized and learned that some classes what they learned or taught in the class was fine, however when ask-ing the teacher would he actually use this or that outside of the class the answer most commonly was NO. So at DTE what is taught is what even the teacher would use whether on the street of in compe-

tition. Direct Torres Extreme Martial Arts (DTE) teaches MMA, Jujitsu, Filipino martial arts, Judo, Boxing and a program that is taught separately from these other arts which is called Combative. Chief Instructor Martin Torres believes that to really train in any art one must have knowledge, un-derstanding and wisdom and must really go deeper than just the art its self. DTE teaches each of the arts separate, they do not mix any

of the arts together, you want to learn Judo, JuJitsu, Boxing, Filipi-no martial arts or MMA you will learn those arts for they are taught separately. These arts are not the name brand arts that you may know, the students are taught the fundamentals, concepts, principles of each art that is taught, and with that they are all arts of that partic-ular style. And stands in its own right alongside any name brand art that is known.

Combat Judo

From the clinch… attacker throws an ill-advised hook creating space allowing Chief Instructor Torres to execute an inside throw/ sweep (using forward ener-gy), finishing with arm control and applying a knee to the face.

Jujitsu

Attacker comes with an angle 1 slash.

Chief Instructor Torres blocks, immediately gains control of the arm and applies repeated elbow strikes (softening him up). Then, using forward energy, he is easily able to affect a face plant, positioning him for a knee to the head. At this point, applying an arm lock, he uses the attacker’s own blade to cut the Ham-string Tendon of the right knee.

Boxing

Attacker throws a left jab.

Chief Instructor Torres angles off while throwing a left cross, following up with a right uppercut (possible elbow break) and a left hook.

Mixed Martial Arts

Attacker throws a left hook

Chief Instructor Torres (using Mano Largo concept) avoids and counters with a rear hook. Because of his use of forward energy, he is able to quickly apply an under hook with an over hook along an outside sweep, slamming the attacker and finishing with the ground and pound.

Attacker throws a right jab.

Chief Instructor Torres, slipping goes directly into a takedown and because of his forward energy, is able to easily position himself to ground and pound and/or apply an arm bar should he so choose.

DTE Combatives

Now the Combatives that is taught at DTE is from the personal experiences of Martin Torres, it is what he has experiences in life, - what works. Now you will say to yourself that is great, it fits Martin Torres but I am not Martin Torres, how is it going to fit me? Well that is the uniqueness of DTE. Realiz-ing that each person is different a six foot 5 inch man weighing 250 pounds is different than an five foot two inch man weighing 175 pounds, they also think different, have different strengths even a

woman is different in many cate-gories. But this is the belief of DTE they teach the concept behind the technique not the technique its self. With the understanding of the concept of the technique or move-ment by the individual learning then it will it the individuals’ per-sonality and capabilities and they will easily be able to execute the movements of the technique that is being taught. So dealing with the con-cept anyone will be able to execute

the movements of a technique, however without the understanding of the concept and principles the technique is worthless. One of the major in cer-tain martial arts is they just want the practitioners to be like robots and they do not care that there are differences in each individual. That is one of the major basic reasons DTE deals with the concepts of all the arts that they teach. And this is where the Combatives class of DTE comes in and is a separate class which is taught at DTE.

Attacker throws and angle 2 strike, in the middle of an exchange.

Chief Instructor Torres jams it while slashing up with a blade to the neck. Then passing the attackers weapon (using forward energy) hits the attacker in the groin with his own weapon. Simultaneously using the blade to hook the attacker’s neck on the way to an elbow break. Chief Instructor Torres then finishes by smashing the Attacker’s head into the ground.

Filipino Martial Arts

The Filipino martial arts in-structors that Martin learned from when he was young were not the big name Filipino martial artists, but practitioners that were called by name or a nickname. Practi-tioners that did not own a school, but just trained in a garage, back-yard, parks, etc. Their skills came as second nature to them. Now one that Martin Torres mentioned that did become known and has an excellent reputation in the Filipino martial arts is Grand-master Rene Latosa. Martin states that once he me Grandmaster Latosa his eyes where opened, for Grand-master Latosa taught students to be themselves and a to be very aggressive in all aspects of his teachings Grandmaster Latosa acted as he spoke 100% genuine. Example if he was going to attack, he did it, to where other instruc-tors would say they were going to attack, but they would just give less than 100% attempt. And what would that accomplish? Actually

nothing for then the student would not give their all to defend and count-er. So what is the result is a half ass execution, defense, and counter. And there is nothing benefiting in this if the real deal comes about. Also to teach of course you teach the basic technique or move-ment, but then it must be broken down into the concept and princi-ple of the technique or movement. Once the student understands the concept and principle the move-ment of the technique will fit the student no matter the size, strength etc., and they will have the ability to execute the technique/move-ment using their personal ability and not a robots ability. The Filipino martial arts that is taught is all Filipino mar-

tial arts nothing added. But let us take a look at any art with an open mind. All have common factors that are the essence of the basics. Like in the Filipino martial arts there are 2 ways to look at it; traditional promoting the culture it stays as is, and the other way is promote the culture and take the information and get a full under-standing and then there should be a transformation from this and then apply it.

Grandmaster Rene Latosa at DTE School

Attacker throws a lazy Jab.

Chief Instructor Torres using the Ginunting principle cuts his hand on the way to the primary target… his throat. At this point, he drags the blade through into a hook behind the head (while keeping forward energy) and drives his head into the ground face first. Pulling the blade deeper in the process.

(Offensive/Defensive Ginunting)Attacker throws a wide hook.

Chief Instructor Torres covers while simultaneously delivering a slashing elbow. Using forward energy he applies an angle 1 with arm control and pivoting, easily throwing attacker while main-taining arm control, finishing with multiple strikes.

Attacker throws an angle 2 strike

Chief Instructor Torres simultaneous-ly slips, counters and disarms him.

Attacker then throws a left cross

Changing levels, Chief Instructor Torres, slips under the cross, using an over hook to control the right arm continuing to an outside trip, transitioning into a top mount ground and pound.

MMA Cross Training (Using FMA concepts)Final Note

In any art the teacher has to take the concept, but make it so that it can be something that the person/practitioner can relate to. Then they will understand and learn, this is whether they are a Judoka, Boxer, MAA etc. A teacher must learn to teach the concepts in a manner that the student can relate. If the student cannot relate, they may be impressed with the movement, but will lose interest in the long run of learning the art. In the long run there are some very good teachers through-out the Filipino martial arts, Judo, Jujitsu, Boxing and MMA etc. And then there are those that we wish were good teachers. One must remember that a commercial school is to bring in people and spread their art. The garage is for students that are true believers, are dedicat-

ed and are in it for the long haul. Now Chief Instructor Tor-res does both commercial and in the garage which he calls the dun-geon. The dungeon is by invitation only, the teaching and learning re-sults are expressed through action. Problem is a practitioner never has a commercial school then there is a chance that they will not become really known, for a lot of people cannot get into training in a garage, backyard, or park. They want what a commer-cial school has to offer besides knowledge, carpet, matts, air con-ditioning, mirrors, uniforms, belts etc. At Direct Torres Extreme Martial Arts the classes enhance each other, even though classes specifically teach a certain style, it will still get a flavor of other arts that are taught.
