First Reading (The people sit.) Isaiah 25:6-9Reader A reading from the book of the Prophet Isaiah.

On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoplesa feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountainthe shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.

  • Psalm 118:14-24 Anglican Chant, sung by the Choir

The LORD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.

There is a sound of exultation and victory in the tents of the righteous:

“The right hand of the LORD has triumphed! the right hand of the LORD is exalted! the right hand of the LORD has triumphed!”

I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.

The LORD has punished me sorely, but he did not hand me over to death.

Open to me the gates of righteousness, I will enter them; I will offer thanks to the LORD.

“This is the gate of the LORD; He who is righteous may enter.”I will give thanks to you, for he answered me and have become my salvation.

The same stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.

This is the LORD’s doing, it is marvelous in our eyes.

On this day the LORD has acted; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

    Second Reading 1 Corinthians 15:19-26

Reader A reading from the first Epistle to the Corinthians.

If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.

But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being; for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

Hymn 182: Christ is alive! Let Christians sing

  • Gospel Please stand. John 20:1-18

Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes.

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

Priest The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

Sermon Please be seated. The Rev. James P. Adams

Nicene Creed Celebrant & People, standing

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

    Doxology

    The Great Thanksgiving

Celebrant The Lord be with you.People And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.People We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.People It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you,Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he has destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won for us everlasting life. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Alleluia, Alleluia. Praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, alleluia; Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

    Sanctus (Celebrant & People)

  • The people stand or kneel.Celebrant We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to

us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

    Celebrant & People We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

Celebrant And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. AMEN.

Communion Motet: O Sacrum Convivium Olivier MessiaenThis piece is by the French composer Olivier Messiaen, who is credited with revolutionizing sacred

music during the mid part of the 20th century. The Christ Church Choristers & Lay Clerks sang this piece as the communion motet for the Mass Internationale at Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, on Aug. 5, 2018. Today the choir offers this piece in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Christ, who grieve the damage of this monumental

church, which has stood for nearly 1,000 years as a pinnacle of Christian art and worship.

Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Celebrant & People Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

  • 2019 Easter Offering

    Dear Christ Church Family,

Our Easter offering this year is dedicated to support the work of Holy Cross Anglican School in Belize.

In 2006, Holy Cross was founded with nothing but a building and a dream of giving an often-forgotten community a chance at new beginnings. Since the school’s doors opened, it has grown from 60 to 450 students. The school’s teachers and staff seek to provide a first-rate education that meets the needs of the modern world. They provide a computer lab, a well-stocked library, and a year round literacy program. The school also provides for the health of each student through nutritious lunches, a dental clinic, and volunteer doctors on site. Through pencils, paper, shoes, scholarships, meal programs, dental and healthcare, each child is given the gift of hope and love.

This year, the Christ Church Outreach Committee has designated the Easter offering to support the mission, ministry and people at Holy Cross as they break ground on a new chapel, which will also serve as a hurricane shelter for students and families. Since 2009, Christ Church has sent 159 students and 24 adult leaders to spend a week working with the ministry. This summer, we will add to that number with 39 new students and six adult leaders.

As we begin to come into the Paschal light and celebrate the resurrection of our Lord, we are reminded of perpetual hope and a life everlasting. We live each day trusted with the gift of that light, and are called to go out into the world to love and serve the Lord. Thank you for your support and prayers as we continue to work alongside our brothers and sisters in Belize.

You can support this offering at any of Christ Church’s Easter services, or online at http://bit.ly/easteroffering2019. To learn more about Holy Cross Anglican School and its many ministries, visit www.holycrossbelize.org.

The 50 Great Days of Eas-ter- Easter is a festival season of 50 days, beginning with Easter Day - the Sunday of the Resur-rection - and ending with the Day of Pentecost. Easter begins after sundown on Holy Saturday. The celebration of Easter is initiated with the Easter Vigil, which can be observed after sundown but is ideally kept just before sunrise, so the proclamation of Jesus’ resur-rection comes with the dawn of the new day. The Easter season includes the events of Christ’s resurrection and ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost.

  • Prayers of the People: Form IV

April 21, 2019 Priest Let us pray for the Church and for the world. Leader Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world. Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Guide the people of this city, this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good. Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory. Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer. Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as he loves us. We pray for the birth of Elizabeth Parker Poirier & Rosalie Adams Poirier, granddaughters of Julie & John Funkhouser, great-granddaughters of Jewell Parker; for the baptism of Taylor Marie Allen, Henry Ward Damutz, & Miles Oldfield Damutz; for the refugee families that are being mentored by this congregation; and for our lay leaders who provide compassionate care and friendship to those in crisis or transition, especially for our Stephen Ministers-in-training, Melissa Dombalis, Susan Lewellen, & Raiford Garrabrant, and all other Stephen Ministers at Christ Church; Silence Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer.Comfort and heal Les Basnight, Mike Tucker, Carole Nicholson, Lee Bondurant, Reid Jones, Craig Wilson, Jeremiah Starling, Ellen Zechman, Nick Young, Jim Rasor, Mary Alice Brinn, Bessie Gray, Mildred Oliver, Betsy Hicks, Richard Hicks, Melissa Benton, Burks Crumpler, Chuck Poe, Caryl Jeffrey, Mike Taylor, James Simpson, Nick Smith, Cathy Kennison, Deborah Campbell, Brian Howell, Douglas Bagley, Marianne Ford, and all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation.
