Dielectric strength

• The dielectric strength is veri-fied by testing the switchgearwith rated values of short-duration power-frequencywithstand voltage and light-ning impulse withstand volt-age according to IEC 62 271-1 /VDE 0671-1 (see table“Dielectric strength”).

• The rated values are referredto sea level and to normalatmospheric conditions(1013 hPa, 20 °C, 11 g/m3

humidity in accordance withIEC 60 071 and VDE 0111).

• The dielectric strengthdecreases with increasingaltitude.For site altitudes above1000 m (above sea level)the standards do not provideany guidelines for the insula-tion rating, but leave this tothe scope of special arrange-ments.

• Site altitude– As the altitude increases,

the dielectric strength in airdecreases due to the decreas-ing air density. This reductionis permitted up to a site alti-tude of 1000 m according toIEC and VDE.

– For site altitudes above1000 m, a higher insulationlevel must be selected. Itresults from the multipli-cation of the rated insulationlevel for 0 to 1000 m with thealtitude correction factor Ka.

Result:

According to the abovetable, a switchgear for arated voltage of 24 kV witha rated lightning impulsewithstand voltage of125 kV is to be selected.

Current-carrying capacity

• According to IEC 62 271-1 /VDE 0671-1 andIEC 62 271-200 /VDE 0671-200 the ratednormal current refers to thefollowing ambient tempera-tures:

– Maximum of24-hour mean + 35 °C

– Maximum + 40 °C

• The current-carrying capacityof the panels and busbarsdepends on the ambient airtemperatures outside theenclosure.

Protection against solidforeign objects, electric shockand water

NXAIR, NXAIR M and NXAIR Pswitchgear types fulfill acc. tothe standards– IEC 62 271-200– IEC 60 529– VDE 0470-1– VDE 0671-200the following degrees ofprotection:

• Definitions of criteria:– Criterion 1

Correctly secured doors andcovers do not open. Limiteddeformations are accepted.

– Criterion 2No fragmentation of theenclosure. Projection of smallparts up to an individual massof 60 g, are accepted.

– Criterion 3Arcing does not cause holesin the accessible sides up toa height of 2 m.

– Criterion 4Horizontal and verticalindicators do no ignite dueto the effect of hot gases.

– Criterion 5The enclosure remainsconnected to its earthingpoint.

• This switchgear up to 31.5 kAis designed with confinementto internal arcs going beyondthe scope of the mentionedstandards; that means that inthe event of an internal fault(arc) in a particular compart-ment, the effects of the arcremain confined to that com-partment:

– No burn-through of partitionsto adjacent compartments

– No burn-through of partitionwalls to adjacent panels

– Pressure-resistant wallsbetween adjacent compart-ments and panels.

• The confinement of an inter-nal arc prevents

– Restrike of an arc fault on liveparts in adjacent compart-ments

– Impermissible deformationof partitions.
