Tweeters – diaphragm

Dual layer tweeters are used in all models in the range. Tweeter diaphragms must be light and stiff to reproduce high notes accurately by pushing the first break-up frequency further away from the audible band below 20kHz. The dual-layer tweeter uses a thin and light aluminium dome reinforced at its periphery by a second dome with its centre portion cut out. This stiffens the visible dome without adding mass. The result is that the first break-up is raised from 30kHz to 38kHz, while sensitivity is raised.

This dual-layer dome is combined with decoupling to create the Decoupled Double Dome tweeter. This helps prevent cabinet vibrations reaching the tweeter, which leads to cleaner, sweeter high-frequency performance. This is the same principle behind ‘tweeter-on-top’ design, as used in two models. In baffle-mounted applications, a ring of synthetic gel surrounds and cushions the magnet assembly, ensuring the entire assembly is able to float within its mounting.

In two models we use the full ‘tweeter-on-top’ configuration. The tweeter diaphragm is housed in an entirely separate enclosure. This delivers measurably superior performance when compared to both baffle-mounted conventional tweeters and decoupled designs.

The measurements show a comparison between the directivity index of a baffle-mounted tweeter in a CM5 S2 versus the tweeter-on-top configuration of CM6 S2. The ideal directivity index would be a perfect circle. CM6 S2 clearly gets closer to that ideal state.

The Decoupled Double Dome tweeter in all new CM Series models is the same component used in the new 600 Series. However, it performs significantly better in the new CM Series. This is because of the superior components used in every new CM Series model. This includes all-new crossovers with high-quality EVO capacitors from Mundorf, upgraded nickel-plated input terminals and superior internal wiring throughout.

Bass/midrange drivers

All models use woven Kevlar cones plus energy absorbing Anti-Resonance Plugs (as found on PM1). These simple mushroom-shaped plugs are a tight fit in the voice-coil former and ensure it stays in shape at the upper frequencies of the driver’s response. The result of this simple change is a smoother driver response and less low-level coloration just above the crossover to the tweeter.

Midrange-only drivers

All models use woven Kevlar cones.

FST drive units in three models. FST in CM10 S2 is fully decoupled from the enclosure using a drawbar mechanism.

Stronger cabinet

New CM Series cabinets are stronger (i.e better braced) than their equivalents in the new 600 Series. The animation (right) shows a velocity measurement across the front baffle of the new 683 S2 (top) versus the CM9 S2 (bottom) measured at 350Hz. The CM9 S2 is clearly stiffer. This delivers a superior platform for the drive units to operate from.
