Espoo in the eyes of a conference organizer

“i’ve been involved in organizing conferences in Espoo since 2001. all of them

have been organized in Otaniemi, in aalto University facilities or in dipoli

Congress Centre. The size of the conferences has been from 50 to 200 with

participants from all over the world.

The conferences in my research area (audio and acoustics) are usually quite

informal, which suits well to Finnish way of organizing events. Sessions are

professionally organized in good facilities, and social events should be fun and

relaxing. We’ve taken participants to nuuksio national Park or organized ice hole

fishing. Several times there’s been a boat cruise to Helsinki or to a nearby island.

Espoo, and in particular Otaniemi campus, is a very good conference location.

There are plenty of good auditoria in aalto University and also in dipoli.

But the best thing is that everything can be found there. a good quality

hotel at seafront guarantees that participants can walk to conference

location from their hotel while enjoying the sound environment full of bird

sings and other nature sounds. Moreover, if someone prefers to have

a hotel in downtown Helsinki, a bus trip takes only 15 minutes to reach

the conference venue.

The city of Espoo has organized a few times a reception at EMMa – Espoo

Museum of Modern art for our participants. EMMa is a great place as

during the reception you can wonder in the middle of art while exchanging

recent news and ideas with your colleagues.

Furthermore, the city Convention Bureau has provided information and help

in organizing social events. and meetespoo.fi is a great source of information,

which helps a lot when planning conference events and social program.”

Otakaari 1 – The main building of the former Helsinki University of Technology, designed by famous Finnish architects alvar and Elissa aalto, was completed in 1964. The facilities have been renewed in the last two years.

Otakaari 1 is located only 15 minutes from centre of Helsinki by public transportation or by car. From Helsinki airport is just half an hour away. it dominates the central area of the aalto University Otaniemi campus from a small hill where the main building of the Otaniemi Manor was located during the 1700s. The roof of the auditorium continues towards the park in the form of an amphitheater. The red bricks of the campus buildings suggest old Finnish industrial architecture, illustrating the close relationship of the work done within its edifices with industrial activity.

This venue is ideal for congresses, seminars and other events up to 600 people. Otakaari 1 offers over 10 auditoriums (70-600 people) and smaller classrooms for meetings and workshops. all rooms include high quality of technique and free-of-charge aalto Open Wlan.
