Welcome to Copenhagen

Welcome to Co-penhagen, and welcome to the special Copen-

hagen Feel! It’s no wonder why all major cruise lines visit Copenhagen, and half our calls are turna-rounds: Copenhagen is a traveller’s dream come true. Unique sights, friendly Copen-hageners and exciting attrac-tions, a picturesque waterfront and pretty canals, grand his-tory and modern, cutting edge adventures, all rolled into one city, and all within easy walking distance. In fact, the city is almost on deck as your ship docks in Copenhagen! Walking off the ship you’re literally minutes away from the pulsating heart of this metropolis of adventures, and your next-door neighbour is Her Majesty the Queen Margrethe II. Her home, Amalienborg, is just minutes along the waterfront.

Copenhagen is a safe and welcoming city. Everyone is happy to speak English and the Copenhageners are renowned for their friendliness. So much so that the term The Copen-hagen feel is used by visitors - a fact Copenhagen is very proud of. Guides, staff, people you meet on the street - everyone will help you to have the experience of a lifetime. Copenhagen is a vibrant, modern city with a relaxed at-mosphere and exciting diversity: Grand castles, wooden ships, world-class gastronomy, exciting museums, leafy parks, idyllic canals, and snug town squares. The pedestrianised main shopping street, Strøget, offers a variety of shops ranging from handmade pipes to contempo-rary art, design and high end fashion. Turn off the main street, and stroll through cosy, cobbled streets lined with old quaint houses. Turn the corner again, and there’s some daring modern architecture. It’s up to you to mix, match, pick and choose. There’s so much to see and do, that most

visitors keep coming back for more memorable moments. Copenhagen is the perfect place to start or end your cruise: Everything is in order, and everything is nearby. The vibe of Copenhagen is simply unique. The easiest way to prove this to you, is if you simply come and visit us. But beware: like thousands of other visitors, you may become addicted! We believe not only in being great hosts, but also in creating long-lasting friendships. So come join us in Copen-hagen – we’re already looking forward to meeting you!

Welcome to Copenhagen

The World’s Oldest Monarchy: A Modern, Yet Thousand-Year-Old fairy Tale Amazingly, the reigning Queen Margrethe II is a direct descendant of the legendary Viking, King Gorm the Old (900 AD). Other family members include Queen Victoria, and Tsar Alexander III from the Russian House of Romanov. Many more great stories and amazing sights are waiting for you at The Royal Castles of Copenhagen.

In 2012, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II celebrates her 40th anniversary on the throne. The Queen is lovingly called “Daisy” by family and friends, and the open-mindedness of the Danes is characterised in their Queen too! As a guest in her Kingdom you are invited to ex-perience the bustling, everyday life as it is for royalty, and to soak up the full splendour befitting a Queen. Former kings’ offices are open at Amalienborg Palace, as well as banquet halls still in use

at Christiansborg Palace. The Danish monarchy has impressive family ties to all other royal families. To name but a few, Queen Margrethe II is named after her grandmother, the British Prin-cess Margaret, granddaughter of Queen Victoria, and the Danish Princess Dagmar (1847-1928) famously became Tsarin of All Russias, when she married Tsar Alexander III. Royal relatives from all over Europe used to gather at Fredensborg Castle

(North Zealand) each summer. Oddly enough, back then it was tradition that everyone – includ-ing the tsar – had porridge for breakfast! The quaint stories, the gran-deur, the sparkling and extrava-gant jewellery, the magnificent castles, and the personal arte-facts of kings, queens, princes and princesses are just waiting for you, enchanting you to step into a modern fairy tale more than a millennium in the making! All royal castles offer guided

tours with competent guides. Find more detailed information on each castle in this brochure on the “Royal Copenhagen” page .

The Copenhagen feelCopenhageners love

their city and are proud of its charm, and yet, they didn’t coin the term ‘The Copenhagen Feel’ themselves. Within no time you’ll feel like a local as you’re floating through this incredible city.

Do it literally too:Make sure to catch one of the Canal Tours,

and see the city from a different perspective. Strolling through the city cen-tre, you find Rosenborg Castle, home to the priceless Danish Crown Jewels, the stunning Crown Regalia, and much more. The castle is situated in The

Kings Garden (Kongens Have), a leafy oasis, just perfect for a rest, or even a picnic. The park was created by fun-loving King Christian IV in the early 1600’s for royal debauchery of all sorts! Soak up the sun and the royal ambiance – after all, it’s been a regal day of leisure! www.dkks.dk/english

One Little Mer-maid: Two Women! This embodiment of

Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale has been sitting bashfully by the waterfront at Langelinie since 1913. Few people know that sculptor Edvard Eriksen asked prima ballerina Ellen Price to model, but the dancer refused to pose in the nude! It is for this reason that the mer-maid we know and love today is sculpted with Ellen Price’s head, but the body represents that of Eriksen’s wife, Eline!

four Sons Turned To Oxen Right by the waterfront, you’ll fi nd the impressive Gefi on fountain, in which the Goddess Gefi on cracks her whip over four oxen above twirling water. The story goes that the Gods prom-ised her all the land she could plough overnight. At this, she promptly turned her 4 sons into oxen, and ploughed out Zealand from Sweden.

“This Is the BBC – Here’s What You Need To Blow Up”“This is BBC Radio”. The BBC

sent coded radio messages to the Danish Resistance through-out World War II, instructing them to blow up railway lines and Nazi-friendly factories. The Resistance famously rescued thousands of Danish Jews, as Danish fi shing boats smuggled them to Sweden in the still of the night. Uncover the exciting stories at The Museum of the Danish Resistance. www.natmus.dk/sw4604.asp

Scenic Canal, Wooden Ships, Amazing Eateries: It’s Nyhavn!Nyhavn is a wonderfully idyllic part of Copenhagen. Today though, beautiful wooden ships adorn Nyhavn, and fi ne eateries with outdoor terraces line the entire water-front. Soak up the atmosphere, relax and relish, and for those

after more lasting memories, there is good news - the tattoo shop is still open!

100 Warfaring Vikings Heading Your Way!2013 is a very special year at The National Museum of Den-mark, as the largest Viking ship ever seen goes on display, after being excavated from Roskilde Fjord. The truly magnifi cent, high octane ship carried 100 battle-ready Viking warriors on long and daring voyages. At 37 metres (121 feet) long, it would have been a terrifying sight for all neighbouring shores, and

The Lion’s KeySsh, it’s a secret, but we’ll whisper it to you, and only you!Go to The King’s Garden (Kongens Have), and fi nd the small bridge that leads across the moat to Rosenborg Castle. Two stone lions majestically guard the castle here. Carefully sneak up to the one on the right, and ever so slowly put your hand in its mouth. Have you noticed? The tongue is loose! Why? Because when King Christian IV roamed the city’s nightlife in the early1600´s, THIS is where he hid the key, so he could sneak in, blind drunk, and not so regal! So, if you fi nd a key in there – you might as well go and have a drink!
