1. Executive summary

The dissemination activities of the AQUACOSM project are focused on the general public and the academic sector. Both, conventional and modern dissemination methods have been developed and used for that purpose.

To engage with the industrial and scientific community the AQUACOSM partners participated in 18 international meetings, focused on marine as well as freshwater research and industry, in Europe and overseas, giving poster and oral presentations. Two project flyers were produced and distributed to perspective stakeholders, mainly during these meetings.

In addition, special emphasis was given to the exploitation of online media, in addition to classical press releases for the dissemination of the project. A press release was distributed to media around the world and several press, websites and popular science blogs have published/posted articles related to AQUACOSM. Furthermore, articles, describing each TA experiment, have been posted on AQUACOSM’s website to inform the scientific community and the general public about the on-going open TA activities in addition to the further aquatic research in AQUACOSM. Social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter and ResearchGate were created in order to facilitate the distribution of the project’s news and activities.

Finally, AQUACOSM partners have participated in 8 public events with more than 30,000 visitors promoting aquatic research and the project’s scopes and activities to the general public.

2. Introduction

The main scope of Work Package 5 (WP5) is to establish a link between the internal environment

of the AQUACOSM project and the outside world. During the kick-off meeting (January 2017), the project partners agreed that the dissemination activities should aim to reach both the wider community (including both general public as well as stakeholders), and to reach the academic community, especially for announcing AQUACOSM’s scientific services, mainly the provision of Transnational Access.

The main WP5 target groups and the aims for each of them are: Scientists:

• Inform about funding opportunities (TA) • Enhance collaboration among scientists • Promote mesocosms as a research tool

University Students:

• Inform and teach about mesocosms and their significance for aquatic research • Inform about available training opportunities during the TA mesocosm experiments

Industry:

• Establish a base for dialog to enhance collaboration between scientific community and industry General public:

• Inform European citizens about aquatic research and its importance • Attract young people to scientific research

In order to reach the above stakeholders, various conventional and modern outreach methodologies

are being used. A schematic representation of the AQUACOSM dissemination strategy is presented in Fig. 2-1. Briefly, a direct contact with scientists, university students, industry and general public will be achieved through the participation of AQUACOSM partners in conferences, seminars, workshops, university lectures and public events. Additionally, special events, such as meetings and workshops during major aquatic research meetings (such as EGU conference) and the industry-dedicated AQUACOSM Innovation Forum (ACIF), are organised to engage further with academic and industrial sectors. Dissemination materials (e.g. leaflets, poster presentations) have been used and distributed during scientific and public events. Media articles and newsletters have been produced and distributed to local and international media and sent through email to aquatic scientists. Also, to promote mesocosm research and the project on a global scale, the use of online platforms is essential. Media articles are continuously produced and posted on the AQUACOSM’s website as well as on other websites and blogs while social media are being used to further promote AQUACOSM activities and funding opportunities.

WP5 is divided in 5 Tasks: Development of the AQUACOSM website (Task 5.1), development of the

AQUACOSM TA portal (Task 5.2), AQUACOSM communication strategy (Task 5.3), engagement with education (Task 5.4), and engagement with industry (Task 5.5).

This report will focus on Task 5.3 and more specifically on the dissemination activities, including social networking, press releases and leaflets.

3. Main Report

The following dissemination activities cover the period from January 2017 to June 2018.

3.1 AQUACOSM Leaflets

During the kick-off meeting, it was decided to produce two separate project leaflets, one presenting the project and the second one focusing on the Transnational Access (TA) opportunities. The leaflets are being distributed at conferences, workshops, meetings, school visits in facilities, trade fairs, and other public events (such as open house), etc. Although the leaflets are designed to mainly target the potential direct stakeholders (SME/RND-industry, public bodies and academic community) the leaflets have also been distributed to the wider community. In both leaflets, the main scope was to engage the stakeholders and “direct” them to the project’s website where they find additional updated information.

The main project leaflet (Figure 3-1) describes the AQUACOSM project as a whole. It illustrates the importance of mesocosms as an experimental tool and explains the goals of the project. The “TA leaflet” (Fig. 3-1) is focused on the Transnational Access opportunities offered to scientists and industry around the world.

Both leaflets can be downloaded in high quality from AQUAOCOSM’s website (https://www.aquacosm.eu/media/). In total 4,000 leaflet copies have been printed (2,000 copies of each type) and distributed to all project partners.

3.2 Social Media

In order to reach as many people as possible from various disciplines, backgrounds and geographical areas, accounts in all major and relevant social media (Facebook, Twitter and ResearchGate) were created (Fig. 3-3). These social platforms were used to post news, events and comments relevant to the project’s activities. Also, most posts include links to the project’s website where visitors can find more information.

As of 28th of June 2018, the statistics of the social accounts are:

• Facebook: 101 page likes, 106 followers and more than 6,000 Facebook users were reached by the posts

• Twitter: 55 tweets have been posted and 780 twitter users are following the AQUACOSM account

• ResearchGate: AQUACOSM account in ResearchGate is being followed by 137 users and has been read by 809 users.

3.3 Web publications, press, interviews, direct communication etc.

An initial press release has been produced and distributed to various websites, blogs and press around the world announcing the beginning of the AQUACOSM project (Figure 3-4). Articles about the project have also been published on numerous blogs, websites and press media across Europe (Fig. 3-5). In addition, a newsletter has been produced with a circulation frequency of approximately 6 months. In this newsletter, all news, progress, success stories and events related to AQUACOSM are being summarized.

A mailing list with more than 500 scientists in aquatic sciences has been compiled based on previous mailing lists from the EU FP7 MESOAQUA project and on email addresses collected during conferences, meetings, workshops, etc. by the AQUACOSM partners. The newsletters as well as the 2018 TA call were directly forwarded to that group of aquatic scientists and representatives of public bodies and companies around the globe.

Furthermore, in order to inform the scientific community about the AQUACOSM research activities and the progress of TA experiments, media articles describing individual 2018 TA experiments are published on the project’s website (http://www.aquacosm.eu/news/) and social media accounts.

3.4 Public Events

In order to engage with the general public, AQUACOSM partners are participating in public events related to science (Fig. 3-6). At these events, partners promote aquatic research and especially mesocosms as research tool and also present the overview and the goals of the project. In addition, the AQUACOSM App (developed in the framework of Task 5.4) is being demonstrated to the younger audience. These events include European Researcher’s Night, school visits in facilities, trade fairs, Open House, etc. In total, partners have participated in 7 public events in Greece, Turkey, The Netherlands, UK and Germany, with a total of more than 30,000 visitors.

A detailed list of the public events in which AQUACOSM project has been presented can be found in Appendix (Table 4-2).

3.5 Conferences – Seminars

To achieve a better communication with the scientific community, the presentation of the AQUACOSM project in scientific meetings (conferences, workshops, etc.) is essential. Common poster and oral presentations have been produced.

Complementary to conventional oral and poster presentations, in order to enhance the dissemination of the project during major scientific meetings, AQUACOSM had a constant presence in ENVRIPlus booth at EGU and also, specialised AQUACOSM-focused workshops and sessions were organized at these meetings as well as an international meeting in Czech Rep Jun 2017. It can be mentioned that several persons from the Czech meeting were for the first time acquainted with AQUACOSM and did thereafter submit successful TA applications for the 2018 season, clearly demonstrating the positive effect of such WS.

Special attention was paid to approach a wide geographically and multidisciplinary audience. In fact, AQUACOSM was presented in scientific meetings for both marine and freshwater sciences (e.g. ASLO, iLTER, EGU, SEFS, ENVRIplus etc.) and with participating scientists from all over the world. The EGU meeting had over 15000 participants, where >300 persons from both industry and scientific communities were reached by direct communication about AQUACOSM, in addition to leaflet distribution.

From January 2017 to June 2018, AQUACOSM partners have presented the project in 18 scientific events around the world (Fig. 3-7). A detailed list of the scientific meetings in which AQUACOSM project was presented can be found in Appendix (Table 4-1).
