BE SUBJECT TO LATE CHANGES. MOVIE TIMES SYD THU 2101 Edited by Simone Fox Koob Full reviews of new films will appear in The Weekend Australian on Saturday Send event information to [email protected] Displaying a deep sense of wonder “That’s the sort of explorer I want to be,’’ declared my young com- panion as we studied the instal- lation dedicated to Andrew Harper, the first person to walk east to west across Australia with camels. Harper’s setup didn’t look comfortable exactly, but it was a hell of a lot roomier than the Jules Verne-inspired bathysphere we had emerged from a few minutes earlier. Crammed inside that hollow steel ball we took ourselves on its then world-record descent of 923m in 1934. What if a shark chomped through the cable or the air hose? No point asking Ron and Valerie Taylor for help: as we knew from their exhibit, the future shark whisperers were born in 1934 and 1935 respectively. And anyway, no way would their chain-mail suits stop the raven- ous, super-intelligent Great White of our imaginations. Educational, interactive, fun and with a whiff of danger: it’s a combination that makes the Aus- tralian Museum’s Trailblazers: Australia’s 50 Greatest Explorers an ideal school holidays outing. Of course unaccompanied adults will also find much at which to marvel, though they may struggle to secure a spot on the excellent rock climbing wall that marks the halfway point of the exhibition. (Note to helicopter parents: the ground under the wall is massively padded.) The show is guest-curated by Australian Geographic founding editor Howard Whelan, a trail- blazer himself. On entering, an introductory panel promises a celebration of the “visionaries, seekers, misfits and adventurers who pushed boundaries in pursuit of understanding the blank regions on our universal map’’. That should be push, present tense, as 21 of the 50 explorers are with us still, despite their best attempts to be otherwise. The inclusion of modern adventurers, from Dick Smith to Jessica Watson to astronaut Andy Thomas, adds pulse to this history of exploration: it’s not all heavily bearded blokes getting perma- nently lost at sea, in the bush or on the ice. Indeed, it’s not all blokes at all; another pleasing aspect is the presence of so many women: Jane Franklin, Nancy Bird Walton, Linda Beilharz, Robyn Davidson and Gaby Kennard, to name a handful. Not that we were uninterested in the tragic blokes, far from it. We found it grimly satisfying that the only remnant of the Burke and Wills expedition on display is a single saddle bag. That’s what happens when you walk into the desert and don’t come back, we agreed. That saddle bag is one of 360 objects that help tell the story of explorers past and present. We liked William Bligh’s sword and the gondola from Smith’s hot air balloon, and remarked on the sur- vival of a feathered cape James Cook brought home from his voy- ages. You’d put that out for the council clean-up, Syd accurately observed. The exhibition is arranged into five sections: Riding the Waves, Trekking the Wilds, Going Over, On Thin Ice and Taking to the Skies. The Antarctic display is well laid out, informative and not all about Douglas Mawson. There’s a cool interactive station where you attempt to put shapes in holes wearing a bulky polar glove. We read up on Syd Kirkby, for obvious reasons, but what most caught our attention was a stuffed husky named Shep. How did he avoid being eaten, we wondered, until closer inspection revealed he was one of 10 huskies who died in a blizzard near Mawson Station in 1983. This information sent us on a quest of our own, to learn more about Shep. We found his employ- ment file via the Australian Ant- arctic Centre website: “ … a good worker like his brothers Siber and Streaky, is highly strung though and tends to panic in certain situa- tions …” Not without reason as it turned out. That’s the best sort of museum exhibition, one that leaves you wanting to do some exploring of your own, online, in books and, aptly in this case, on foot: our first port of call on leaving was the nearby State Library of NSW, to look at the statue of Matthew Flinders’s remarkable seafaring cat Trim. If you too are curious to learn more, the museum’s informative website is a good place to start: www.australianmuseum.net.au. EXHIBITION Trailblazers: Australia’s 50 Greatest Explorers Australian Museum, Sydney, until July 18 STEPHEN ROMEI Sydney Kirkby, a surveyor and Antarctic explorer, main, and, across top from left, a late 19th century engraving of Wylie and Edward John Eyre, adventurer and scientist Tim Jarvis, and solo teenage yatchswoman Jessica Watson. YOUR LOCAL ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE NSW & ACT NOW SHOWING Spotlight (M) Tom McCarthy’s riveting film follows a team of investigative journalists for The Boston Globe as they delve into the activities of paedophile priests in the Boston Archdiocese and talk to their victims. There are strong performances from a fine cast that includes Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo and Liev Shreiber and the film successfully avoids hysteria in favour of a meticulous depiction of the challenges facing journalists when they become involved in such a vast and sinister story. DAVID STRATTON Goosebumps (PG) American author RL Stine has penned more Goosebumps books than you can shake a wooden stake at. Credit first, then, to screenwriting team Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who have crafted a meta-narrative that crams most of Stine’s monsters into a single storyline. Werewolves are my favourite monsters, and the one here is terrific, but viewers who are more into evil clowns, zombies, laser-eyed toy robots, savage levitating poodles or town-wrecking giant insects will also leave satisfied. The special effects are good: a showdown with the snowman on an ice hockey rink is both comic and a little scary, just like the Goosebumps books, which are pitched at pre-teens. Jack Black is in good form as the enigmatic author Stine, but it is Dylan Minnette as Zach who impresses most. He’s an appealing young actor: good- looking, articulate and wryly funny. STEPHEN ROMEI NSW OPERA Opera in the Domain The Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra perform with solo vocalists from Opera Australia in this annual outdoor celebration of operatic classics. ACT LIVE MUSIC Josh Pyke: But For All These Shrinking Hearts Tour Musically speaking, Josh Pyke has been creative since the age of 14, when he began writing songs while a student at Sydney’s Fort Street High School. Perhaps it was only a matter of time until Pyke poked a stick at the nature of creativity. He does this in his typically melodic, harmonic and poppily seductive manner on this fifth album, But For All These Shrinking Hearts. Another quality album from one of our most consistent songwriters. IAIN SHEDDEN Canberra Theatre Centre. Civic Square, London Circuit. January 30, 8pm. Tickets: $51-$57. Bookings: (02) 6275 2700. EXHIBITION Family Space: Amusement Parlour Free children’s activities will take place over the school holidays inspired by the macabre portraits and photographs of Australian criminals in Sideshow Alley. National Portrait Gallery. King Edward Terrace, Parkes. Admission: free. Inquiries: (02) 6102 7000 or online. Ends Sunday. Tapestry of the nation on film “Blessed.” “Lucky.” “Blows my mind.” These are some of the expressions of good fortune peppered through Gillian Armstrong’s crowdsourced film The Inspiring Story of Us. Compiled from 55 hours of submitted footage, it features Aussies from all walks of life who are making a contribution to their nation. There’s a young woman who runs an open day at her mosque, the inventor of a virtual-reality aid for the vision impaired, a duo who started a mobile washing-machine service for the homeless, and a woman who makes joyous “yarn bombs”, Jane Balke-Andersen (pictured). Armstrong, director of My Brilliant Career and many other films, says people sent clips from smartphones and video cameras for the 23-minute film commissioned by the Commonwealth Bank. “The intimacy and honesty we have captured by piecing together these very personal stories has allowed us to create what I hope will be an unforgettable tapestry of the nation through film,” she says. Displaying a deep sense of wonder

“That’s the sort of explorer I wantto be,’’ declared my young com-panion as we studied the instal-lation dedicated to AndrewHarper, the first person to walkeast to west across Australia withcamels. Harper’s setup didn’t lookcomfortable exactly, but it was ahell of a lot roomier than the JulesVerne-inspired bathysphere wehad emerged from a few minutesearlier.

Crammed inside that hollowsteel ball we took ourselves on itsthen world-record descent of923m in 1934. What if a sharkchomped through the cable or theair hose? No point asking Ron andValerie Taylor for help: as weknew from their exhibit, the futureshark whisperers were born in1934 and 1935 respectively. Andanyway, no way would theirchain-mail suits stop the raven-ous, super-intelligent Great Whiteof our imaginations.

Educational, interactive, funand with a whiff of danger: it’s acombination that makes the Aus-tralian Museum’s Trailblazers:Australia’s 50 Greatest Explorersan ideal school holidays outing.Of course unaccompanied adultswill also find much at which tomarvel, though they may struggleto secure a spot on the excellentrock climbing wall that marks the

halfway point of the exhibition.(Note to helicopter parents: theground under the wall is massivelypadded.)

The show is guest-curated byAustralian Geographic foundingeditor Howard Whelan, a trail-blazer himself. On entering, anintroductory panel promises acelebration of the “visionaries, seekers, misfits and adventurerswho pushed boundaries in pursuit

of understanding the blankregions on our universal map’’.That should be push, presenttense, as 21 of the 50 explorers arewith us still, despite their bestattempts to be otherwise.

The inclusion of modernadventurers, from Dick Smith toJessica Watson to astronaut AndyThomas, adds pulse to this historyof exploration: it’s not all heavilybearded blokes getting perma-

nently lost at sea, in the bush or onthe ice. Indeed, it’s not all blokes atall; another pleasing aspect is thepresence of so many women: JaneFranklin, Nancy Bird Walton,Linda Beilharz, Robyn Davidsonand Gaby Kennard, to name ahandful.

Not that we were uninterestedin the tragic blokes, far from it. Wefound it grimly satisfying that theonly remnant of the Burke and

Wills expedition on display is asingle saddle bag. That’s whathappens when you walk into thedesert and don’t come back, weagreed. That saddle bag is one of360 objects that help tell the storyof explorers past and present. Weliked William Bligh’s sword andthe gondola from Smith’s hot airballoon, and remarked on the sur-vival of a feathered cape JamesCook brought home from his voy-

ages. You’d put that out for thecouncil clean-up, Syd accuratelyobserved.

The exhibition is arranged intofive sections: Riding the Waves,Trekking the Wilds, Going Over,On Thin Ice and Taking to theSkies. The Antarctic display is welllaid out, informative and not allabout Douglas Mawson. There’sa cool interactive station whereyou attempt to put shapes in holeswearing a bulky polar glove.

We read up on Syd Kirkby, forobvious reasons, but what mostcaught our attention was a stuffedhusky named Shep. How did heavoid being eaten, we wondered, until closer inspection revealedhe was one of 10 huskies who diedin a blizzard near Mawson Stationin 1983.

This information sent us on aquest of our own, to learn moreabout Shep. We found his employ-ment file via the Australian Ant-arctic Centre website: “ … a goodworker like his brothers Siber andStreaky, is highly strung thoughand tends to panic in certain situa-tions …” Not without reason as itturned out.

That’s the best sort of museumexhibition, one that leaves youwanting to do some exploring ofyour own, online, in books and, aptly in this case, on foot: our firstport of call on leaving was thenearby State Library of NSW, tolook at the statue of MatthewFlinders’s remarkable seafaringcat Trim.

If you too are curious to learnmore, the museum’s informativewebsite is a good place to start:www.australianmuseum.net.au.

NOW SHOWING

Spotlight (M)Tom McCarthy’s riveting film follows a team of investigative journalists for The Boston Globe as they delve into the activities of paedophile priests in the Boston Archdiocese and talk to their victims.

DAVID STRATTON

Goosebumps (PG) American author RL Stine has penned more Goosebumps books than you can shake a wooden stake at. He’s an appealing young actor: good-looking, articulate and wryly funny.

Josh Pyke: But For All These Shrinking Hearts TourMusically speaking, Josh Pyke has been creative since the age of 14, when he began writing songs while a student at Sydney’s Fort Street High School. Perhaps it was only a matter of time until Pyke poked a stick at the nature of creativity. He does this in his typically melodic, harmonic and poppily seductive manner on this fifth album, But For All These Shrinking Hearts. Another quality album from one of our most consistent songwriters.

Tapestry of the nation on film

“Blessed.” “Lucky.” “Blows my mind.” These are some of the expressions of good fortune peppered through Gillian Armstrong’s crowdsourced film The Inspiring Story of Us.
