Always flour h an d an d work su rfaces to keep dough from st icking.

Work ing on foil-covered cookie sh eets ma kes clean-up easier an d a llowspieces to be moved without d am age.

Important: To join a ny t wo pieces of ra w dough t ogether , simply moist enboth su rfaces with wat er an d press together. The water acts as a glue and keepsdough from separ at ing during baking or drying. Tip: using a water color bru shmakes moistening pieces easy.

The Air Drying ProcessIt s slower (but ea sier for k ids), and often yields int erest ing textu res.1. For best r esult s, place sculpt ur es on a piece of screen, so th at both sides

can dry out equ ally well.2. Allow to sta nd at least 48 hour s, until it ha s a rock ha rdn ess, an d is white

an d limest one-like in appea ra nce. Then its ready to finish.

    The Baking P rocess

It s faster , an d a llows th e option of var ious finishin g techniques.1. Set oven tempera tu re at 325350.2. Bak e on foil-covered cookie sheet for easy clean -up.3. For each 1/4" thickness, allow one-half hour baking time, or bake until

sur face tur ns light golden brown.

Baking TipsIf sculptu re pu ffs up, poke a hole with a pin or tooth pick to release air , and

reduce oven t empera tu re 50 to 75.

Give special at tent ion t o extra th in pieces which tend to bake more r apidly. You might wish to reduce oven temper at ur e.

To prevent large, flat sculptures from curling during baking, just weight

down edges with a met al t ool or h eavy object a fter t he su rface ha s cooked longenough t o support th e weight without leaving indenta tions. (Test by ta pping withspoon.)

Now For the Big Fini shAfter youve properly dried or baked your creation, its time to finish it off

right . Ther e are several meth ods to choose from.Differen t t ypes of pain ts ea ch produce th eir own int erest ing effects. Try your

ha nd at water colors, spray paint s, acrylics, or ena mels. Want a ma rbled look? J ustad d food coloring to th e dough while youre kn eading it. For u niform color, applyfood colorin g to the wa ter . Ther e ar e even some more t ypes of finish es you can

app ly durin g the ba king pr ocess (such a s egg or can ned m ilk glazes).

Note : All dough sculptu res require protection against moistu re. Most paint s(except wa ter colors ) provide sufficient sea l by th emselves. Mak e sur e th at piecesar e complet ely sealed with p ain t, or th at both sides of all sculpt ur es ar e coveredwith a coat of shellac, acrylic sealer, lacquer , or va rn ish.

Listed h ere a re comm on finishin g effects t ha t you can produce.

    1. Natural f inish . J ust a ir dry piece for 48 hours. Var nish.2. Antique f inish . Fir st give the piece two coat s of acrylic lacquer, th en

sta in it with a comm ercial wood sta in. After a llowing the sta in to dry a fewmin ut es, rub th e sur face with a soft cloth for a h igh-light ed effect. Fin ally, var nishit. (For glossier finish es, apply acrylic clear gloss.)

    3. Water color f inish . After pain tin g a piece with wat er colors, dr y pieceth oroughly, th en a dd a coat of var nish.4. Acrylic pain t f inish . A base coat of whit e acrylic pain t is app lied to th e

piece, followed by a s econd coat of an y color of your choice. (If a t ra nspa rent color isdesired, add s ma ll amoun ts of color t o acrylic mediu m. The less color u sed, th emore tra nspa rent th e paint.) Since acrylic paint seals a sculpture, no final coat ofvarn ish is needed.

    5. Baked f inish . Simply bake th e piece un til its golden brown. Then give ita coat of shellac or va rn ish.

    6. Metall ic f inish . Use a ru b-on met allic copper finish for an int erest inghighlighted effect.

(Gold, silver an d br onze finishes can also be us ed t o achieve similar effects .)

After war d, give th e piece a coat of var nish .

    7. Egg f inish . After bakin g a piece about 15 min ut es, rem ove it from th eoven and ba ste it with whole, beaten egg. Retur n t he piece to the oven unt il it isdone. (For a dar ker finish , reba ste every 10 or 15 min ut es.) Varn ish when cool.Note: Can ned m ilk can be used inst ead of, or even mixed with, egg to give a similardar k brown finish.

After finish ing, try a var iety of fina l touches. By gluing on bu tt ons,

rhinestones, seeds, sequins, shells, or bits of pasta, you can achieve unusual andexciting effects. In fact, you can do just a bout an yth ing to your dough sculptu re,except eat it!

Dont str etch the dough too tightly over a met al base (like a lid). J ust lay thedough down gent ly to prevent shr inkage, which can ultima tely cau se cracking.

Dont use m irr ors or plast ic for a base, since they cra ck or melt du rin gbaking.

Do check ea ch piece often while its ba king, since corr ections a re easy t oma ke while dough is sett ing. (For example, seams can be reinforced, an d th e shapeof the p iece can be corr ected.)

Dont be afraid to press sea ms t ogether h ar d enough to hold secur ely.

Do add more salt for firm er dough. (The salt a lso gives a tr an slucent qu alityto th e dough.)

Do , for convenien ce sak e, mix up dough a hea d of tim e an d st ore in a plast icbag. You m ay refrigera te dough for u p to five days.

Do , if major cracking occurs while object is baking, remove piece from theoven, fill in t he crack with m oist dough, and retu rn it t o the oven.

Do use white glue t o att ach finished dough sculptu re pieces to an oth ersurface.
