CQ WW SSB Contest October 26-27, 2013 Call: N6QQ Operators: N6QQ, KD6HYN Station: N6QQ Class: M/S HP QTH: CA Operating time (hrs): 29.5 Summary: Band QSOs Zones Countries 160: 80: 42 15 20 40: 184 30 92 20: 199 35 111 15: 232 37 121 10: 427 34 123 Total: 1084 151 467 Total Score = 1,830,046 Club: Southern California Contest Club Comments: At last, great conditions on 10 meters. Finally broke my record of 2011. 427 Q’s and 123 countries on 10 meters alone. Worked a total of 144 countries in 38 zones. Missed zones 22 and 39. Three Band DXCC was something new for me. Missed DXCC on 40 meters by 8 countries. One highlight, working 7O2A (Yemen). ARRL has already approved this operation. Operation was at N6MXU QTH. Rig: IC-7800, Alpha 87A, Monster SteppIR and an 80 meter dipole.

Linda, KD6HYN, was a second operator. It was fun watching her operate under my Call. No question that a female voice does help in making QSO’s. Does look like we are having a second top in this sunspot cycle. Overall, my 2013 DXCC total is 258. My projection, should hit 265 countries by the end of the year. Now on to CQ WW CW Contest. The 27 day rotation of the Sun should hit about the right time for great conditions. John, N6QQ

President’s Message As we wrap up 2013 I thought I would start up the monthly President’s Message again. It has been several years since I last served as club president and I am honored once again to do so. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Rick Norwood, KD6KHJ for serving as our fearless leader these past five years. The thing that keeps me interested in Ham Radio is the never ending aspects of our hob-by. From DX to Amateur TV and Digital Signals to public service there is literally no end to the different adventures we can experience as we enjoy our avocation. When first licensed in 1970 it was all about making those first CW contacts from my own station. Fortunately with my Elmer across the street and a Ham Radio club at school I

was able to make my first few Novice contacts. Unfortunately my license was only good for 2 years and be-tween learning code and all my other interests at the time I let my license lapse for about 10 years. Then in the early eighties I came back with a vengeance and went from novice to Advanced within a few months’ time. Armed with a solid state radio and a Butternut Vertical I worked the world from home. It was a blast. Around the same time computers were just becoming affordable and I quickly learned how they could be used for packet, bulletin boards and interfacing to our radios for digital use. I remember some of the nay sayers back then predicted the death of Ham Radio now that we had computers. Then, surely the final blow, the Inter-net would replace everything we loved about radio. In the words of Mark Twain, the news of Ham Radio’s death had been greatly exaggerated. I don’t think a ham shack exists now without a computer. If not for logging or monitoring the DX clusters it is used for numerous things. Such as finding hard to find schematics, or a resource for parts. We even have radi-os that are completely computer controlled with upgradeable software. Without computers we would still be trying to find documentation (remember Sam’s Photofacts?) by catalogs or going the library. Now I enjoy the challenge of bouncing microwaves up and down the state and into the neighboring states and countries. I am looking forward to trying moon bounce one of these days and I really need to come up to speed on the JT65 and other new digital methods. So much to try, so little time. Never stop challenging yourself, never stop learning, never stop having fun. 73, Dave Glenn N6TEB

General Meeting Minutes October 3, 2013 President Rick Norwood, KD6KHJ, brought the meeting to order at 19:30 with 30 in attendance. We com-menced with the Pledge of Allegiance led by Ron Eveland W6QM. Following the Pledge of Allegiance intro-ductions were done for those that were in attendance. Dave, N6TEB introduced this month's guest speaker Dick Norton, N6AA, The ARRL Southwest Division Direc-tor. Dick spoke to the group about several different topics, from antenna issues with local municipalities, to the ARRL Centennial Convention in 2014. After Dick's talk he had a short question and answer secession with the group. Following the presentation the group took a short break. Rick, KD6KHJ requested for a motion to be made to accept September's treasurer’s report as printed in the September edition of the Q5. A motion was made and seconded and passed unanimously. Annual Luncheon: Rick reminded the group of the Annual Luncheon to be held on November 10th in lieu of the

VE Testing: The next VE Testing secession will be on October 17 at 8:30 am at the EOC center at Fire Station #1. Elections: Ron W6QM as head of the nominating committee asked for any nominations from the floor for any officer positions. No nominations came from the floor. Ron then read the names of those running for office. They are as follows: President: Dave, N6TEB, First Vice President: Ron, W6QM, VP-Service: Rick, KD6KHJ, VP- Ways & Means: Steve, KI6SUF, Secretary: Bill, KB6WKT; Treasurer: Frank, KC6YPV; Director 2 Years: Kent, K6WCI.
