Burgers. They are amongst my favorite foods. Bigger equals better in my book; especially when it involves my favorite toppings and condiments. My apologies to all of you, and especially my wife, but onions are amongst my most favorite. True traditionalists like myself always attempt to eat the burger as a true sandwich was intended – with no utensils involved. It gets interesting as you try to take a bite and though the results can be a little messy, the satisfying meal is always worth it! As I began to prepare for Youth Camp upon my arrival in March, I tried to think of an analogy which could adequately describe it. 100 youth, 20 adult leaders, worship leader, years of time honored tradition and countless stories that begin with “This one time at camp.” Then it came to me. Youth Camp is like one of my favorite burgers. Its scope is impossible to grasp. The necessary ingredients too many to count. Trying to assemble and eat this thing is a daunting challenge, and then I remembered one important truth that I have always said at the conclusion of large scale student ministry events like Youth Camp – It’s so good and it’s worth it. It’s good. It’s good because of the amazing students who are giving a week of their time to seek a deeper relationship with God. Good because of the many adults who have given innumerable hours to planning and will have long days of leading students followed by nights sprinkled with sleep. But good most of all because God’s spirit will be present there and will bless our lives as we worship Him. It’s worth it. It’s worth it when a student crosses over from death to life. Worth it when their voices lift as one chorus to echo the great hymns of the faith, as well as a few new songs that you should listen to every once in a while. Worth it when a new level of trust is established between adult leader and youth. Worth it when a student realizes that God’s word is alive and active and sharper than any two edged sword. Worth it when they will come home exhausted but renewed because they are filled with the knowledge that God loves them with a love that has no end. Yes, just like a good burger, hot off the grill, impossible to eat in a dignified fashion, and sure to leave you messy, Youth Camp is good eating because it’s where many, including myself, will taste and see that the Lord is good, and that, my friends is good eating! I want to thank this church in advance for making such experiences possible by way of your individual and collective giving. I want to ask you to pray for us each day we are gone. I want to ask you to celebrate with us when we return. I can’t wait. Let’s eat! Peace, David
