SPECIAL R ULESThe Crusader Order trait and the True Cross, described below, are special rules unique to this army.

Crusader Order (Trait)Crusaders developed a new tactic in the Holy Land

that allowed them to protect their heavy cavalrybehind foot troops until it was the right time tounleash their devastating charge.

MOVING THROUGH UNITSWhen a cavalry unit with the Crusader Order traitmoves through a friendly infantry unit, as longas the infantry unit is in good order and also hasthe Crusader Order trait, the following exceptionsapply to the rules found on page 42:

    • The cavalry unit can move through the inantryeven if the infantry unit is in deep formation.

    • Neither unit needs to test or Disorder ater thecavalry unit has completed its move.

    • I the cavalry unit does not have enoughmovement to clear the infantry unit, it is moveddirectly forwards or backwards until it hascleared it. Both units must then test for Disorder.

LINE OF SIGHT THROUGH UNITS IN DEEP FORMATIONA stand in a cavalry unit with the Crusader Ordertrait can draw a line of sight through up to twostands in a friendly infantry unit in deep formation,as long as the intervening unit has the CrusaderOrder trait and the frst intervening stand is within1” of the cavalry stand.

The True Cross (UNIT)The Crusader army of Jerusalem sometimes marchedto war beore a huge gold and jewelled crucifxcontaining a fragment of the True Cross. This, themost powerful talisman of Christendom, was borneinto battle on a horse-drawn cart, accompanied bypriests led by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem.

The True Cross is a unique unit belonging to theHigh Lord’s Bataille. It counts as a normal unit, basedon a single stand measuring 60 mm x 100 mm, withthe following exceptions:

    PROFILE

The only rating that the True Cross has is itsMovement of 4”. It does not require any other ratings.

The True Cross has the Independent and InspiringPresence traits, as well as the Holiest Relic traitdetailed below.

LINE OF SIGHTWhen determining line of sight to or from the TrueCross, draw the line o sight to or rom the crucifx

part o the model. The True Cross has a 360° feld ovision, never blocks line of sight, and can be seen

through by both friendly and enemy units.

A CTIVATION The True Cross can be commanded in the same wayas a normal unit, except that issuing a command toit is free – it does not count towards a battle leader’sCommand rating.

If the True Cross has to be activated during theActivate Uncommanded Units phase, it does nothave to take the Discipline test normally required.

The only command the True Cross can be given isthe Move command (see below).

    MOVE

When given this command, the True Cross canmove up to 4”. It can change direction up to twotimes at any point during its move.

It can never move closer than 1” to an enemy battleleader or unit, and cannot move across disruptiveor treacherous terrain, or across obstacles.

SHOOTINGThe True Cross is unaffected by shooting attacks(it’s assumed that the priests duck under the cart forcover when shot at, and if the horses drawing thecart are killed by shooting, the priests themselvesand other nearby volunteers haul the True Crossabout instead).

MÊLÉEIf an enemy unit charges into contact with theTrue Cross, it is immediately captured. Note that itcounts as a unit, so skirmishers cannot charge it toits front, neither can enemy battle leaders move intocontact with it.

TRAIT – THE HOLIEST R ELICEvery friendly unit of Catholic faith that the TrueCross can draw a line of sight to gains:

    • the Devout (Catholic) trait (page @@) and doesn’tlose this trait while the True Cross still stands;

    • +1 Resilience.

C APTURING THE TRUE CROSSIf the True Cross is captured, every unit in thearmy it belongs to reduces its Courage by 1 for theduration of the battle and must then immediatelytest for Disarray.

TROPHY  R  ATINGThe True Cross has a Trophy rating of 6.

NFANTRY   T  ACTICS Use your spearmeno shield your morealuable knights fromhooting, while presentingdefensive array of

he key to victory withCrusader army is to

nits in conjunction withach other, and to maintainhem within your battleaders’ Command Range.reating them as separatentities and moving yournits beyond the chainf command can be an

    nvitation to disaster.

CRUSADER  TROOPSThese troops form the backbone of the armiesof the Crusader States – well-equipped soldierstrained or war and motivated to fght.

The spearmen, archers and crossbowmenrepresent professional troops equipped, trained

and paid for by the towns and cities of Outremeror by the Church. Some form permanentgarrisons in settlements or forts. They arerecruited from local common folk and thosewho have arrived on pilgrimage from Europe.

If they are part of a Crusader force, theseunits are devout commoners wealthy enoughto equip themselves to go on Crusade, whoattach themselves to one of the regiments of aCrusading lord.

Mounted serjeants are the sons or youngerbrothers of knights, rich enough to ride a horse

but of lower rank and less experience.

Italian sailors come from the cities of Venice,Genoa and Pisa, recruited from the commercialdistricts of the coastal Crusader cities, whilepilgrims represent commoners who havejoined a Crusade; they fght with religiousfervour rather than competent military skill.

    CILICIAN  A RMENIAN A LLIES

Units of Cilician Armenians were numerousin the armies of the northern Crusader States– the Principality of Antioch, and in particularthe County of Edessa, which was founded froman existing Armenian state.

The rulers of Cilician Armenia shared acommon foe with the Crusaders against theMuslims, especially the Seljuk Turks, who hadattempted to subjugate them in the latter hal othe 11th century. They also hated the Byzantines, from whose control they had rebelled around1080. When the Crusaders mustered theirarmies, the leaders of the Cilician Armenianswould sometimes gather their own contingentsto march to war alongside their Catholic allies.
