KEEP CALM!SPRING IS COMING ...

Hey, you!Have you ever wished that life could have a big red “pause” button? Not to stop the whole thing permanently; just so you could linger in an enjoyable moment. Or finish the homework you were assigned for tomorrow…

Sadly, time waits for no one, and this month is flying by. The fact that September is at our doorstep reminds us that spring is coming, and with it hopefully some warmer weather and longer days. Soon, it’ll be pool party time again. Until then, take a break – and read AWSUM.

For now, there are only 4 weeks remaining before the Rugby World Cup kicks off in England!!! Excitement is growing, even here at AWSUM HQ. Make sure that you enter the competition on our cover, where you could stand a chance of winning a rugby jersey and ball signed by Jean de Villiers. To enter, simply like AWSUM on Facebook and post a comment on our wall: Rugby World Cup #MakeItAHomeGame.

During the first week of the June holidays, the Under 13 Hockey girls and Rugby boys undertook a tour to the beautiful Karoo town known as The Jewel of the Karoo. Over 3 days they played successfully against several teams mainly from the Port Elizabeth area, learning about sport, life and friendships.

Mr Fosta Gaba and Mr Richard Schultz, with the help of GPS pupils, spent several Saturday mornings fund-raising to off-set the tour costs…yummy!

THE SELFIE CULTURE: SHOULD WE BE WORRIED?

You can hardly go onto Facebook, Instagram or any other social media site without being inundated with selfies. A recent study found that a 91% of teens have reportedly posted a photo of themselves online. With this kind of statistic, odds are that your

teen has already taken and posted at least one of these instant self-portraits.

By Steven Wodawww.uknowkids.com

For most teens, selfies are a harmless bit of adolescent fun, no more dangerous than other passing fads. Actual damage by selfie is rare, but it does happen. As a parent, you need to be aware of these risks and become equipped to discuss them with your teen.

SELFIES AND SELF-ESTEEMOne risk factor for selfies is that the act and obsession with taking them can lead teens to the development of poor self-esteem.

There has been some speculation about whether self-portraits help or hurt self-esteem. Out of the few studies that have been conducted on the matter, the verdict on the effects of selfies on teen self-esteem is somewhat conflicting.

A body image survey conducted by the TODAY Show found that 65% of teen girls feel that selfies boost their self-confidence. 40% of them agreed that social media helps them put their best face forward. However, 53% of respondents alleged that photos of themselves that are posted by others can make them feel bad.

Earlier this year a teen from the UK became obsessed with taking the perfect selfie. He dropped out of school, lost thirty pounds, and didn’t

more protected, there is never a guarantee that something won’t go viral once it is posted or merely sent to one person.

College admissions officers and scholarship foundations now often include a search on social media for prospective students. Many employers have started looking up a job applicant’s online presence and factoring that information into their hiring decisions. That car-surfing stunt a teen photographed in his first year of college may be years in the past. But to an employer, what does that say about the job applicant’s judgment and self-control? He doesn’t know how long ago that picture was taken or how much your teen has changed in the intervening time; he only knows what the photo tells him.

SELFIE SAFETY TIPS: 1. Teach teens early on that selfies, social media posts, and the feedback they receive on social media should not be tied to their self-worth.2. Ensure that your teens are using proper privacy settings throughout their social media accounts.3. Instruct your kids to be careful about the personal settings and items that are featured in selfies.4. Only post selfies that you would be comfortable sharing with the world.

leave the house for six months because he was devoting ten or more hours a day to taking pictures. Eventually, he attempted suicide by overdose.

The chances are pretty good that your teen is not as ill as this young man was, but, while rare, the case demonstrates how poor self-esteem can be exacerbated by

the selfie trend. The danger is very real and is something that should be on every parent’s radar.

SELFIES AND YOUR ONLINE REPUTATIONAs with all online and social media activities, posting

selfies can have a negative effect on your child’s online reputation. Both the quantity and subject matter of photos that are shared with friends on Facebook can impact the level of support and intimacy within their relationships.

Additionally, the permanence of anything that is posted online, like selfies, can haunt a teen years after they’re taken. Although there are a few ways kids can make the social networks they use

STUDY SKILLS

THE FOUNDATION PHASE

AWARD ASSEMBLY THE GRADE 4 LEARNERS WROTE THEIR FIRST EXAMS. THIS IS WHAT SOME OF THEM HAD TO SAY

ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE.“Learning is something students do, not something done to students.” Alfie KohnNo matter where our young people go or what they choose to do in life after school, they will still need to know HOW to learn to get ahead. Every George Randell Primary Grade 6 and 7 learners attended a Study Skills workshop last week. They were empowered with knowledge on how the brain learns and the different ways in which to approach studying. They were also assisted in determining whether they were visual, auditory or kinaesthetic learners and the methods which each favoured.

The Foundation Phase were not only entertained by dog handler, Lloyd Dern, but taught the value of essential life skills such a persevering at their tasks in order to succeed.

George Randell Primary acknowledged the academic achievements of their learners for Term 2 at their recent Award Assembly. They were honoured to have as their special guest, none other than Ms Shalom Khandanisa, well known radio personality at Link Fm Christian Radio Station. Ms Khandanisa, who, amongst many of her achievements, was one of the top 2012 five finalists of TOP BILLING in the Eastern Cape, was also an accomplished Border tennis player. Her inspiring message to the Georgie learners encouraged them to be the best they could, to strive towards their goals and to never ever give up.

Grade 6 learner, Ntsika Sekalo engrossed in the Study Skills questionnaire.

Mr Gert Swanepoel – Principal, Ms Shalom Khandanisa, Mrs Roche Sonn- Head of Department, and Mr Henry Pienaar- SGB Chairperson.

Shulami Ntozakhe – It was fine, but some were a bit hard. Maths was the worst. This term I will try my best in Maths.

Caleb Qutywa- I thought they were hard, but as I was doing them they turned out easy. The experience was like I’m going to fail, but I passed. I felt so happy when I passed the exams.

Siphosethu Dwedzi – In my first exam I was a little bit nervous and the first time I saw the questions, my spine was shivering like mad.

Kokuhle Ndlela – Some of them were confusing. I wondered if I was going to pass. I crossed my fingers very hard. It was terrifying and exciting.

Mbasa Matyobeni – I was a little scared with the first exam, but as it turned out the exam was a lot easier when I read through it closely.

Voorpos welcomes Mr Naude who joined the Intermediate/Senior Phase at the beginning of this term.

Ukum Baku – The exams were easy and hard at the same time. I was excited and scared, but I got through it.

We are very proud of our headgirl, Sange Tshakumane, who received a scholarship from the Allan Grey Orbis Foundation for her high school career. She will be attending Clarendon High School.

Sing with Pharrell Williams! Winning the chance to do so could be a dream come true for many. Woolworths and MySchool partnered together to find a school singing group to do just that. Out of 199 entries from across the country, Hudson Park Primary’s Grade 7 Girls’ singing group has made the top 10. The 10 finalists will now be evaluated by

Grammy Award-winning musician, record producer and philanthropist Pharrell Williams, who will choose the winners personally. The winning group will then travel to Johannesburg to perform with Pharrell at a private party for Woolworths. Congratulations must also go to Gonubie High School for being the second East London-based school to crack the top 10.

WIN WITH WELLINGTON’S

Spring is just around the corner, and I can’t wait to venture back into my

garden. I don’t have much in the way of a green thumb, so I’ve decided to have some fun that doesn’t involve

planting anything.

I’ve found an idea online that I’d love to share with you: What better way to welcome back all our feathered friends than with this adorable teacup bird-feeder?

WHAT YOU NEED: • A cup and saucer• Wild bird seed• Super-adhesive glue• String

WHAT TO DO:Make sure the cup and saucer are clean and dry. Squeeze some of the glue on to the edge of the saucer, tip the cup over on its side, and place it on the glue. This will need to set for about 24 hours before you hang it outside. Once it’s dry, all you have to do is pour in the bird seed and hang up the feeder.

Stirling High School has been chosen as the runner up for the Water Research Commission (WRC) Eco-School mini-SASS Challenge which was open to all Eco-Schools. Many of our learners were involved in this competition which was entered last year, amongst them were all the grade 10 Life Sciences learners of 2014 who analysed the Inhlanza river water and picked up and recorded rubbish along the river, the actors in the “Green Earth Journey” and the Eco-club members. Special mention must me made of Ranjinee Ayasamy who designed a river analysis board game. Emma Wagenaar, Sydney Nel, Micehelle de Beer, Sarah Raats, Tarryn Green, Tayla Crocker, Kristen de Jager, James Bentley and Chad Rasmussen also handed in outstanding contributions. The prize of R25 000, was received by Chad and Sydney at the National Youth Water and Sanitation Summit Award Ceremony
