Summer of Arts Heats Up the Southwest

Arts events abound during the summer in the Eastend area. There will continuously be ex-citing exhibits and workshops to appeal to all ages. Currently, Cypress Gallery is featuringwork by Virginia Boulay, David Shkolny and Trea Jensen. Boulays fine graphic statementsare rooted in Southwest Saskatchewan. They are bold and filled with the undulant feelingthat she is famous for. Shkolny is a new artist to the area but his passion for clouds speaksof love for the huge, open skies that are a signature of the Southwest. He works in soft pas-tels which give a malleable quality to his clouds that makes you feel they are continuouslychanging. Trea Jensen is showcasing new large portraits of earthy goddesses that happily

radiate warmth and contentment. Emerging artist, Bronwyn Schuster, is also exhibiting freshand interesting work.

Silver Willow Gallery will continue the show of Marg Wiebes photography and watercol-ours until the end of the month. At Robsart Art Works paintings by Virginia Boulay, GerryOliver and Geoff Phillips as well as photography by Wayne Inverarity are on display.

We benefit from having talented artists in the area over the summer as they enrich our com-munities by sharing their skills and interests with us. Award-winning writer, Candace Sav-age just completed a writing workshop at Old Man on His Back. David Shkolny will be pre-senting two 1-day pastel workshops at Fort Walsh on July 24th and 25th. Fortunately for us,he will also present a pastel workshop at the T.rex Discovery Centre on July 26 th. These areprofessionals at the top of their careers who are drawn to the Southwest because of its variedand rich texture of light, pattern, scope and history. Through galleries and Stegner Housetheir work continues to attract other people to explore the wealth of material that we have tooffer. It is an industry unto itself that has growing economic impact on Eastend.

This rising tide of artistic interest is also complimentary to the natural sciences and workswell in conjunction with the T.rex Discovery Centre. Art and science have historically pro-moted each other and were at one time considered to be inimical. Today they continue thisrelationship by providing both visual structure and understanding of our environment. Theyspan the connections between emotion, physiology, sociology and history. They help to bindus together with our surroundings. Art production businesses like Whitemud Clay Studiohave built a reputation for fine product based squarely on the resources of the land. Theirpresence continues to bring economic benefit to our town.

When people move to the Southwest Saskatchewan area it is in large part because of itsbeauty. Artists who come to work or reside here do much to promote the appeal of livinghere. They are another important part of what makes us unique. Economic benefit and the

Arts prove to be good working partners in Eastend. JK

    Movie Synopsis:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

A cult classic as gut-bustingly hilariousas it is blithely ridiculous, Monty Pythonand the Holy Grail has lost none of itsexceedingly silly charm. This is an ab-surdist send-up of the legend of KingArthur and his knights' quest for the HolyGrail. From its opening multi-languagetitles (that sure looks like Swedish) to the

closing arrest of the entire Dark Agescast by modern-day bobbies, Monty Py-thon and the Holy Grail helped to define"irreverence" and became an instant cultclassic. This time the Pythonites savagethe legend of King Arthur, juxtaposingsome excellently selected exterior loca-tions with an unending stream of anach-ronistic one-liners, non sequiturs, andslapstick set pieces. The Knights of theRound Table set off in search of the HolyGrail on foot, as their lackeys make clip-pety-clop sounds with coconut shells. Aplague-ridden community, ringing withthe cry of "bring out your dead," offersits hale and hearty citizens to the bodypiles. A wedding of convenience is at-tacked by Arthur's minions while thepasty-faced groom continually attemptsto burst into song. The good guys arenearly thwarted by the dreaded, tree-shaped "Knights Who Say Ni!" A feistyenemy warrior, bloodily shorn of hisarms and legs in the thick of battle, threatens to bite off his opponent's knee-cap. A French military officer shoutssuch taunts as "I fart in your general di-

rection" and "I wave my private parts atyour aunties." Rabbits are a particularobsession of the writers this time around, ranging from the huge Trojan Rabbit tothe "killer bunny" that decapitates one ofthe knights. Graham Chapman, JohnCleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, TerryJones, and Michael Palin collaborated onthe script and assumed most of the on-screen roles.

Dino Days ParadeSummer of Fun in Eastend

Dachshunds, dinosaurs, pirates, and Riders fans celebrated sunny Dino Days in Eastend on July 17th. with creativefloats, antique trucks, spectacular Cadillacs, western riders and mini vehicles of every description. Everyone was akid again when the parade passed by.

Very few large cities can rival the fireworks display that is the one of the noted features of Dino Days. This yearwas no exception and provided an awesome evenings experience. Delays due to winds just made the anticipationthat much greater and no one was disappointed by the scale of the display.

Ted Gleim urged us all out to the pancake breakfast early Saturday morning and the weekend began to unroll a se-ries of events that everyone could enjoy. Hot dogs, pool activities and kite flying kept people busy while a serioustournament began at Streambank Golf Course.Down by the Docks performed for children at the Library and a beergarden ran all day at the Rink Complex. A great range of events that filled a hot summer day with memorable fun.

See pages 4 and 6 of www.eastend.blogspot.com for full colour photos of the parade.Photos courtesy of Ilse Hansen-Upsher.
