How will the Elle TENS Help Your Pain?

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical NerveStimulation) works by passing mildelectrical impulses through the skin, viaelectrode pads, into the nerve fibres whichlie below. The TENS impulses help yourbody produce its own pain killingchemicals, such as ‘endorphins’.

The level of pain relief obtained varies fromperson to person. Some find that the ElleTENS provides all the pain relief requiredduring the whole of labour, whereas othersfind that other analgesics are also neededduring the later stages of labour.

Introduction to the Elle TENS

The Elle TENS is the state-of-the-art,efficient method of drug-free pain reliefwith no known side effects. In order toobtain maximum benefit, it is advised thatyou seek guidance from your medicaladviser as well as reading this instructionguide.

Suggested Electrode Placement Chart

The sticky electrode pads need to beplaced in the correct position formaximum pain relief. It is preferable toobtain assistance from either yourbirthing partner or medical adviser whenpositioning the pads. Please read thefollowing instructions carefully:

1. Carefully peel the pads from theplastic backing using your forefinger andthumb. Do not pull on the lead wires.

2. Position the top two pads (connectedto the left socket CH1) approximately 4cmeither side of the spine and 4-5cm abovethe imaginary navel line as seen in thediagram.

3. Position the bottom two pads(connected to the right socket CH2)approximately 4cm either side of thespine and 4-5cm below the imaginarynavel line as seen in the diagram.

Using your Elle TENS

a) You are now ready to start using yourElle TENS. Switch the unit on by pressingthe on/off button. Ensure that the‘boost’ button located at the top right ofthe unit is NOT pressed in. The Elle TENSwill always start up in BURST 1 mode.

b) Begin by pressing the CH1+ key. Each time you press this key, a small‘half-moon’ shape will appear on thescreen increasing in number and size asthe intensity is increased. You will beginto feel a pulsating sensation which willburst in time with the small arrowflashing on the screen.

c) Repeat the previous step with the .CH2+ key. You will now feel a sensation inboth sets of pads.

d) BURST 1 (use between contractions):This is the first mode that you will use. Itfeels like a bursting, tingling sensationi.e. the pulses are off and on periodically. This mode will help to promote those all-important natural pain-killing chemicalsknown as ‘endorphins’ and ‘encephalins’.

e) BOOST 1 (use during contractions):When experiencing a contraction, simplypress the ‘boost’ button located at thetop right of the unit. The Elle TENS willthen switch automatically into theBOOST 1 mode for that extra surge ofpower required to combat the pain duringcontractions. This will feel like acontinuous sensation.

f ) Once the contraction has passed, simply release the ‘boost’ button. TheElle TENS will return to the orignialBURST 1 mode. Continue this cycle duringyour early stages of labour.

The Mode Button

There are two modes available on theElle TENS, each with a Burst and Boostfunction.

Mode 1 (Burst 1 and Boost 1), which hasbeen described above, is primarily usedfor the earlier stages of labour.

Mode 2 (Burst 2 and Boost 2) can beused when your labour advances andyour contractions become morefrequent.

Press the Mode button to switchbetween modes. You will see from theUser Display, that the number in thesmall circle next to the BURST or BOOSTwill change from 1 to 2 and vice-versa.

NB. Both modes are interchangeableand can be used according to yourpreference, not necessarily for the stageof labour you are in.

The Opti-max Key

This provides extra versatility to your ElleTENS. Increasing or decreasing the Opti-max key will allow you to either heightenor lessen the level of pulse powertransmitted to the electrode pads.

Pressing the OM key either + or - willincrease or decrease Opti-max sensation, this is extremely useful for the finalstages of labour when you need an extrasurge of power.

There are 5 Opti-max levels indicated by5 dots, enlarging in size as the Opti-maxpower is increased. The unit will alwaysstart up at Opti-max 3, which is exactlyhalf way between the highest and lowestsetting.

NB. The Opti-max key can be usedaccording to your preference and notnecessarily for the stage of labour youare in.

Useful information

Continue stimulation for as long asnecessary, unless you experiencediscomfort.

If you stimulate for a number of hoursensure the pads do not become dry. If thisoccurs, switch off the unit, disconnect theelectrodes, and apply a small drop ofwater to them.

Always ensure that the unit is switched offbefore you remove the leads. Do not pullthe wires. Always remove the jack plugsfrom their sockets by holding the plugsbetween the forefinger and thumb.

N.B. The Elle TENS can also be used as astandard TENS unit for relief of numerousconditions, including after pains and postoperative pains. It is worth bearing thisin mind if you have a caesarian section. Please seek medical advice first.

Troubleshooting Questions

Q) Why does the stimulation not appearto be as strong after you have used theElle TENS for a while? A) Increase the intensity, you may havebecome used to a lower setting.

Q) Why does the stimulation feel strongbut ineffective?A) You may need to reposition theelectrode pads.

Q) Why does the stimulation not feelsufficiently strong even on a highsetting?A) The batteries may need replacing.

Q) What do I do if there is nostimulation, intermittent stimulation, orweak stimulation felt even with a newbattery? A) Check electrode contact. Check leads.Check batteries. Phone Babycare TENSon 0845 230 9737.
