European deserts …..A shocking news was released by the media recently: The member countries of the EU have released more carbon-dioxide to the atmosphere than ever. It happened in spite of the fact that these countries have committed themselves to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. The British physicist, C. Keeling has been monitoring the concentration of atmospheric carbon-dioxide since 1958. According to his data, the rate of accumulation of the gases responsible for global warming, carbon-dioxide in the first place, seems to be growing in recent years. This acceleration can not be explained by the increasing emission by motorization and power plants, since there was no comparable increase in emissions in the examined period. The change is explicable rather by the onset of a positive feedback loop, which ecologists and meteorologists considered a threat for only the distant future. If the ecosystems of the Earth are able to fix less carbon dioxide because of warming oceans and rapid deforestation, this leads to the further warming of the atmosphere, as these processes mutually reinforce each other. …… The 1997 Kyoto Protocol is aimed at the gradual reduction of carbon-dioxide emission. Experts warn that the compliance with the principles of the Kyoto Protocol is not enough: To diminish the effects of climatic change, a drastic 50% reduction of carbon dioxide emissions is necessary. However, it is a non-realistic aim, considering current energy needs and population growth figures. Desertification, often considered a consequence of climatic change, is not the problem of only distant continents anymore. This phenomenon has reached the Mediterranean regions also. …… In Southern Europe an area of more than 300 thousand square kilometres is threatened directly by desertification. Fire also takes its toll, 600-800 thousand hectares (the size of Corsica) of Mediterranean forests perish in forest fires annually. If the current trend of destruction does not change, by 2025 the third of the arable lands of Africa will be covered by sand and some 135 million people will be homeless. The most threatened regions are the one South of the Sahara and the periphery of the Chinese Gobi Desert. ……. A report on the threatened areas was issued by the UN on the occasion of the World Day against Desertification. The process has already reached Europe and Hungary is among the severely hit regions.
